DANNY DEVITO IS THE DEFINITIVE PENGUIN

- Colin Farrell and Robin Lord Taylor may have been terrific in their mostly accurate adaptations of The Penguin ---
But Danny DeVito's time in the part was really something else.
Redefining the role for generations to come in Batman Returns.
What we have here is not only one of the greatest Penguin performances but one of the best Danny DeVito performances ever put to screen.

This is a fact.....the perfect live penguin
Tell that to Burgess Meredith he's definitive.
@@PeterTennant - Tell that to Robin Lord Taylor, he's definitiver.
This guy don't know anything
I wanted one closer to the animated series version. Danny was perfect for the Tim Burton world
Also, Penguin's theme music added so much to the character and the movie. It was amazing.
This penguin IS something that you cant un-remember
Danny De Vito >>> Oswalda Cobblepot.
Bruce Timm should have listened to Vee Infuso before doing BATMAN : CRINGE CRUSADER.
"Your just jealous cause i.m a genuine freak and you have to wear a mask."
*You may be right.*
🦇
Funny thing is that even if they made a version more faithful version of the character, Danny DeVito would still be the perfect choice for the role
Shout out to Robyn Lord Taylor for also giving us one of the best Penguin performances.
Agreed....hell Gotham gave us so many incarnations of the Batman rogues
@@darkservantofheaven
The only one's I feel could of been cut were Barbara Gordon and Fish Mooney. Honestly the two worst parts of the show.
Robin Lord Taylor is my definitive live action Penguin, *Gotham* had some issues but it's still in my top 3 favorite live action DC shows ever...
I grew up with Devito's Penguin (Batman 89 & Returns are some of my most rewatched superhero movies, ever ), and since he looked the same in Batman:TAS, for me has was THE Penguin.
(and I was really happy when Danny had this to say about him: _"I've watched the show. I think he's a very good young Penguin. He's a terrific actor."_
Danny Devito was amazing as Penguin. My ideal take on the character would be Danny Devito playing a Penguin that was written like the one from the Arkham games. I also really like the backstory of the version from the Telltale Games Batman series, but you'd need cast a Batman who's close to the same age as your Penguin for that to work.
I love, love Danny DeVito Penguin.
Tim Burton took that character and made him a true super villain who was truly worthy of Batman's attention
Except you're ruining Tim Burton movies by calling this a supervillain or superhero movie when nobody has superpowers 😂
@@tizianoferrigno588 Oh whatever 🙄
Love this take on the character, it’s the one I grew up with.
But I think if we could ever find the perfect mesh of Monster from Batman Returns and gangster Oswald being cunning from Gotham it would be perfect
I really like Gotham’s universe take on the penguin
@@spaghettinoodlechop3163 As trash as the show is, it's the closest thing to a definitive live-action Penguin. As in, I could actually kind of see this guy becoming Paul Williams' Penguin (THE Definitive Penguin) with 20 years. Colin Farrell is just doing a gritty serious version of Burgess Meredith (which...I've never been wild about).
We don't want a cat, we want more Vee Reviews! Loving the content, looking forward to the next one.
Michelle phiffer Catwoman oh hells yeah
I know I've heard some people say they went over the top when it came down to a Danny DeVito's penguin. I always thought his performance was great.
I mean he’s the only Penguin that usually always stick to mind. He just works in his own right that happens to do the character justice. Or enhanced in some way.
Do the whole teenage mutant ninja turtles franchise
This IS MY Penguin as well i grew up with this movie and was as a little kid scared of Danny at the time when he was the Penguin. Danny Really is a great actor and Knows how to deliver a great villain who you fell sad at early on, till he snaps.
Burton took such a huge deviation from the comic character, and in my opinion he made Penguin infinitely more interesting than he is in the comics
No. He's the definitive Trashman.
I couldn't agree more!😊
Upon recently rewatching both the Burton and Nolan Batman movies (both series are quite enjoyable), I firmly hold that the Burton movies are the best live action Batman films
DeVito's and Taylor's versions of the Penguin are my favorites.
Is this the definitive penguin?......yes.
DeVito was the very Penguin I grew up on!🐧 Him and the Arkhamverse Penguin.
Actually that was sludge coming out of his mouth. He did have sludge from Shreks toxic waste plant in his lair.
Once again, i wish they didnt kill this Penguin. The idea of this Penguin working with Nicholson's Joker teaming up is so epic.
That would have been cool.
I was one of this Penguin's early defenders. I approved of the overall concept, even though I didn't approve of where DeVito took the character with his ad-libbing; had he followed the script, his Penguin would have been a little closer to the one we'd always known. Still, I remember DeVito giving interviews about his role back in '92, and he said that, deep down, the Penguin WAS intelligent, but had been coarsened by his years of living in the sewers. I have mixed feelings about that take. The "freak" angle was brilliant, but Burton and DeVito didn't quite take it in the direction I wanted it to go. I'm much more fond of the offshoot Penguin on the '90s animated series: nearly as deformed, but also somewhat sympathetic, and with an astounding intellect beneath his grotesque appearance. Even the Penguin's depiction as a Cockney mobster in the video games was an improvement; making him British was a stroke of genius.
Even so, I thought the plot of BATMAN RETURNS fitted this Penguin perfectly. Making him a sideshow attraction for the Red Triangle Circus was a brilliant move in two ways. First, the way the Penguin behaved as Oswald Cobblepot was how real sideshow performers were trained to behave. They were often simply deformed actors, and were in on the joke along with all the other circus people. They projected a persona of self-pity in order to gain public sympathy and to "sell" the character. Also like this Penguin, they would perform small acts of kindness but then become ashamed when "normal" people showed their gratitude. Cobblepot would have spent years practicing this role over and over for circus audiences, so it was second nature to him when the time came to fool the public for real.
Also, it is thematically appropriate for this Penguin to run for mayor. Even if that wasn't his plan from the start, as a sideshow performer he was well-suited to the task. Both the carny and the politician manipulate people by appealing to their expectations about what reality should be like. Most people eventually become cynical about the ploys of both, but their will to believe continues to override their good judgement. They sincerely want the world to be as colorful as the circus makes it out to be, and for society in general to be as utopian as the politicians promise.
The cockney Arkham take was ass. The only bad Arkham interpretation. Both are new takes on the character but at least the Burton version is interesting
Danny Devito is the redefinitive Penguin.
I don't even know if that's a real word, but I can't think of one that fits better.
Hard disagree with the title. The Burton nostalgia is wild with the older fans. As over glazed as the 2022 Batman movie is, Colin Farrell's Oswald feels more like the definitive Penguin. Since he feels like more of a boss instead of a sewer mutant with bootleg Joker henchmen. Devito's performance is great for a repackaged character, but definitely not the definitive Penguin. I could argue that Burton's Penguin is the best alt version of the character because most of the other versions don't stand out from each other. This one is just straight up a monster.
This movie still holds up well
Yes 🙌🏽
I wish they would do like a Batman no way home with Danny Devito they could've done that in flash but we didn't get it
That would be so fucking weird to watch lmao. Unless you meant Tim Burton universe only.
i actually love when the core characters are toyed around like that, The Batman (the series) happens to be one of my favorite batman shows (besides btas), simply for how it reinvents the characters making it fresh, its not perfect at it, mr. freeze in that series completely misses the mark for me, but i always find it amazing to see fresh interpretations of beloved characters
Well said. The way I look at him, DeVito's Penguin may not be THE Penguin, but he is very convincing as A Penguin. No, technically the character is nothing like this (or at least he wasn't; hints of the Burton version have been creeping their way in for a long time now), but he is still easily recognizable as an alternate version of the character, and one who doesn't disgrace the spirit of the original. He's a criminal with style, and a flair for the theatrical; he's got gimmicked umbrellas aplenty and loves a good topper; he has an association with, and a resemblance to, his namesake bird and birds in general. All of these are classic Penguin, in any version. And yes, he's also a slime-drooling mutant who was raised by birds in a sewer, grew to adulthood (it's implied) in a circus freak show, and now commands an army of criminal clowns and acrobats. But the latter set of elements do not negate the former; they only accentuate them. DeVito's Penguin may be a funhouse mirror version of his inspiration, but he is still very credible in the role.
Another penguin that took huge inspiration from this one, was the long Halloween penguin
I think Bob Hoskins could have been a great Penguin. Think the Long good Friday.
As a major fan of the Penguin, I don't entirely agree that Danny DeVito's version has nothing to do with the comics. There are many bits and pieces of the comics in this portrayal; they're just mixed with a lot of original elements, too.
Burton's films weren't perfect, but on an aesthetical level they were the epitome of batman. It's worth mentioning those that had issues with batman v superman, on a visual level it looked amazing. The style of that movie it feels like batman, there are some amazing shots. I'll never suggest otherwise. I guess Gunn likes the campy batman, but I think most agree that isn't what they want batman to be like, that's not how they prefer the character. I'm a big fan of burton's nightmare before christmas and wednesday was incredible, showing he wasn't a fluke. He was a success before and after batman, his reputation wasn't tied to it, but he did give one of the best versions.
Okay, I can accept the argument that Burton's Penguin was objectively definitive, in that his portrayal has marked pretty much all subsequent efforts one way or another (except the DCAU redesign for BTAS Season 4, still played by Paul Williams.) And it was genius in several ways. But classically, Cobblepot has always represented a shallow sophistication masking brutality: that's his version of the deformed-aspect-of-Batman villain trope. It's there in the comics until De Vito, it's there in B66 (where arguably the Penguin was really Batman's main antagonist), and it's usually there afterward. BATS Season 4 tones it down the brutality too much to the civilized mobster, but De Vito's Penguin goes faaaaaaaaaarrr too far into the brutality, to the point that his nods at being civilized are just laughably, pathetically, horribly broken -- which admittedly is the point of his version of the character.
I'd argue that the best balance of shallow sophistication and brutality, in the most visually typical version of the design, is the Arkham Penguin. But in terms of sheer _character_, I'll acknowledge Robin Lord Taylor's portrayal most fully amps that balance to the max; he just doesn't look enough like the stereotype, but that kind of doesn't matter.
Arkham City has my favorite Penguin.
I'm an animal, cold blooded!
Um....Oswald? Penguins are warm blooded
Danny i agree with you wholeheartedly you were the best and still
Burgess Meredith respectfully
I prefer David Ogden Stiers Penguin.
I love this and Collins equally. The Batman and Batman Returns were both masterpieces. And The Penguin on HBO is off to a GREAT start.
I don't really think so. Live-action my favourite one is Burgess Meredith.
NO, HE' S NOT
silly youtuber! you spelled COLIN FARRELL wrong!!!!!
Colin Farrell should have gotten an Oscar nod for his portrayal. Also, if someone ever does a biopic of NJ ex-gov Chris Christie, Farrell’s your guy!
Hey Vee what are your thoughts on the Blue Beetle movie do you like it, hate it, or indifferent about it.
Love it
People say that other actors played a "more comic accurate" penguin such as lord Alfred tennison (forgive me for name misspellings) in Gotham series (the second best penguin just behind Danny devito) and some say the the penguin in 'the Batman' was good as well.
But nobody (except those who are drunk off their ass) can say ANYBODY was a better Catwoman/Selena Kyle then Michelle phiffer was.
Let's look at Michelle's kitty cat competition shall we. First (and the worst) is Halle berry. There is not a sane person in this earth or in the multiverse of earths out there that could with a straight face say halle was anything but a giant cat turd in the litter box of bat Cinema. Then there is the 'catwoman' in 'dark knight rises' . Ok she was a thief and she had 'cat ears' that were high tech goggles but that is where the flea bath wears off and that character joins Halle in the litter box. Then we have the character in 'gotham', (I don't remember the actress name) that young lady was a fat better Selena Kyle then perhaps Michelle was. If Gotham had another season perhaps set in modern times with the characters we meet (the not joker Jerome/Jeremiah, penguin, Catwoman, Mr freeze, Jim Gordon, Bruce Wayne/Batman etc etc) set as their adult versions against Batman I believe that actress as Selena Kyle would have played an excellent Catwoman maybe even challenging the queen cat Michelle for her Kitty crown.
Honestly I believe there are only 3 great Catwomen from top to bottom, Michelle phiffer, Julie newmar, and eartha kitt.
Burgess Meredith!
I wish Burton was kept on to make Batman 3/4 in his unique style. Seeing his version of two-face and mr. freeze would have been amazing.
He's more interesting than a simple rich guy with a big nose
It's also a myth that he was always a rich guy. The first time Penguin was given a backstory, he was portrayed as the humble son of a birdshop owner, whose father died of pnuemonia, and whose mother forced him to always carry an umbrella. He became embittered after a gang of bullies ramsacked the birdshop and killed various birds, and attacked them with one of his umbrellas.
Personally, I hate this version of the character. Don’t get me wrong, I love Danny Devito’s portrayal of the character and he’s a great villain, but not a great Penguin. The character is supposed to be a gentleman of crime, not a deformed… thing. No hate though, as I definitely understand the appeal.
Davitos Penguin was too gross and disgusting. Burgess Meredith was the Best Penguin.
I don’t know why but this version of the penguin works with me!, probably because he’s a bit different than the original and he’s a bit more monstrous which I don’t mind, i’m alright with reimagining a character’s personality, and DeVito’s version is hella entertaining.
Even tho it’s in the comics The Long Halloween Dark Victory Penguin looks a bit monstrous with the sharp teeth like Burtonverse Ozzy
I love Danny's Penguin since I was a kid but I disagree. The definitive live action Penguin is Robin Lord Taylor from Gotham. And I'm also hyped for the Colin Farrell spin off.
In the new DCU, they honestly should have danny devito comeback as the penguin, be it the same style as the one from Returns (social outcast/recluse who fell from grace) or have him characterized similarly to colins portrayal (The disfigured mobster)...i just think Danny Devito is the perfect person to play the penguin in general.
I could see him doing really well as a mobster styled version of the character. I'd actually argue that it would be better than the creepy one we ended up with.
You certainly complained a lot about this version. Despite calling him the “Definitive Version” of the character.
I’m kind of with Kevin Smith when he said Tim Burton’s Penguin was cool but in reality was it’s own thing. DeVito portrayal was more like a sewer pig dark mirror-image of Bruce Wayne’s wealth and image.
Ya know whenever Vee says “Your least favorite RUclipsr.” Im like “Oh thats not true.” but then he made this video
Jk but fr no. Just no
Today they'd make the penguin a black trans lesbian
Looking forward to the next one hopefully another day it died video soon, a B99 would be my choice
I dunno trump became president so I could see the penguin becoming mayor
Penguin and Catwoman were PurRrfect in Batman Returns
Frank Reynolds is a parody of The Penguin.
And sometimes film adaptations can be even better than the source material. Look at X-Men Days of Future Past.
Design-wise, my Penguin takes some visual cues from DeVito's take.
He looks like a dude that lived down the street from me and we also nick named him penguin ….. this is just spinning me out
Source material or not it was a fresh take and made him his own .he did a great job even when i was kid he was creepy but also not to be underestimated and thats all i need in a villian whatever else people do it with it is the beauty in it
Didn't you just do this video a couple of months ago?
No. No he isn't. I love him. But this is not what I think of when I think of penguin and I grew up with this movie
Most popular≠Definitive
Not even close
Growing up reading the comic. I hated Devitos Penguin, he shouldn't be deformed with weird hands. He was a gangster who hated being called Penguin. Why I'm so happy Matt Reeves finally gave me the character I wanted Growing up.
Devitos penguin is like thanos, both were heavily changed for the movies they were in,but they were changed for the better.
for me the penguin
Sorry. Burgess Meredith will always be the Penguin to me. He was always a goofy villain and should remain as such.
I loved the Adam West Batman when i was a kid, but yes it was goofy family friendly stuff. Tim Burton would've terrified people back then. The newer versions of Batman probably would've been banned lol.

You know, in my opinion, he would have been perfect without the mutant makeup. Admittedly, much of the modern day incarnation of Penguin as the "kingpin" of Gotham City post-dates Batman Returns so that now, the DeVito incarnation is a major shift from the comic. But I really feel that DeVito could have been the perfect Penguin had he been allowed to play it straight, no mutant makeup, and just a little padding. Then, add a little Frank Reynolds, a little of Burgess Meredith's high class speechifying, and THERE'S your definitive Penguin.
I find it ironic that after 30 years people will say “well DeVito wasn’t really the Penguin from the comics”, and since then countless incarnations literally pattern themselves after Danny’s and Tim’s Penguin. So at this point can we just call HIM the classic Penguin and stop wishing for just some fat guy with a pointy nose? Even Colin Farrell’s Penguin owes a lot to Danny’s.
"We don't want a CAT!"
The fact that his portrayal has so heavily influenced so many of the performances that came after his says it all.
Danny Devito WAS the Penguin... still is, in my opinion... Just like Henry Cavill IS Superman.
Still... I have much respect for the source material which allowed for this reinterpretation in the first place.
Batman and his villains are supposed to be outlandish, charismatic and charming. Tim and Danny deliver with style
I feel like if Phillip Seymour Hoffman got the chance to play a version of Penguin that is more like the Batman Animated Series there would be a different idea of who is the best Cobblepot. Unfortunately he is dead so we will never know.
The Penguin is an extremely sympathetic, pitiful character. He was rejected at BIRTH due to his physical deformities and disablity, an orphan raised in the sewers by animals, and was treated as a circus freak throughout his childhood. His vengeance towards Gotham is motivated by his desire to get back at the society that demonised and shunned him, and derided him as no more than an 'ugly birdman with fish breath.' No wonder he was so angry. These people were bigots. 😠😠👊🏿👊🏿
I like what they did the with the Penguin in this movie because it makes him more interesting and comic book like. In the original Comics he's essentially just a mobster with a slightly weird design and gimmick umbrellas, hardly a good villain for a movie. Making him more monstrous and making the whole penguin thing more than just a play on how he usually wears tuxedos and has a beaky nose makes things more interesting and engaging.
Only thing I wish is they didn't put so much focus on Catwoman and saved her more for the third movie as opposed to splitting attention between her and the penguin.
I agree to an extent that the reason they change things adapting stuff from the comics is that some stuff wouldn't work I think that's a minority reason. The main reason is that the creatives of the adaptation change things purposely when they don't NEED to be changed. And that's neither a good thing or a bad thing. It could be a good thing because the creatives might have had a good idea with the change and it ended up being good or it could be the creatives thought something was stupid in the comics and changed it (like changing the hulks name from Bruce to Robert because they thought the name Bruce was stupid and sounded gay) or you get the executives getting their hands into the process and change things from the comics for no other reason then their ego. So whether it's for good or ill them changing things from the comics has less to do with them NEEDING to change something because it wouldn't translate and not because they wanted too.
i actually think his relationship with carla is really interesting; it's like schrodinger's marriage
Something that is facinating about Devito's Penguin is that despite being a monster inside and out is that many feel sympathy for the character, when your look at his backstory: born deformed and thrown to the gutter like garbage, you feel like he never had a chance to be anything else than what he became.
The penguin is a precursor to frank Reynolds
