• Mad County Build
Thanks for stopping by our channel! We are self building our family of 5 a post frame barndominium in Iowa along with the life we’ve always dreamed of.
The goal of our channel is to inspire others to build their dream by providing education on construction and an in depth look at how we’ve gotten to this place.

this guy does more in these 13mins videos than I do all month! What vitamins do you take?!?!
Lol it’s just pure farm grown hard work with probably anxiety fueling it 🤣
In floor heat yes. Yes now need to think about a safe room for tornados
I am so glad you are expanding your business and getting employees because you are really good at your job . Anyone watching your videos knows everything is meticulously done and know that if the give you work it shall be done right
Thank you! It’s exciting to be going in this direction.
Awesome, Paul. This is going to be great. You have already done this- rinse and repeat. Your style says you will always look to do it better than last time. We could all work with that and have a better world too! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! FR
Cold weather climates need some planning for staying busy through the winter. Excited for the new year.
Glad to see this is expanding for you. Merry Christmas to you and the family.....may the new year bring you great joy and prosperity. Love your videos.
Volumetric Mobile Mixers are great tools for contractors to call on. No guess work on concrete quantities, just exactly what you need delivered. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for showing us a variety of videos on your channel.
Thanks for watching!
We enjoy all the videos. Learning with each episode.
Thank you we appreciate you guys!
Looking forward to your new setup. I enjoy your Channel, THANK YOU ‼️‼️. Vinny 🇺🇸
Great video Sir, happy you are expanding, it's very important. Looking forward for the next videos watching this build.. Take care. Thanks 😊
Thanks for watching!
Very Cool! I like the multiple projects approach.
Thanks!
Good video.
Always interesting, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Looking forward to it. just saying
I am so happy that you get to expand your building practice this way. I hope you still keep some “how to” segments in all of the change. I have really appreciated all the knowledge you have passed on. I hope between multiple builds, finishing your house, and all the video editing you leave time for snagging big Iowa bucks. 😂
Thank you! We will be increasing our video production and getting a lot more detailed next year!
Very impressive!
Thank you!
Finally in floor heating 😊
Good detailed video. Best Wishes for a profitable 2022
Thank you appreciate it
Paul, why is wire mesh cages or rebar not needed in the holes?
What do you end up doing with the space between the piers, below the grade board. Is the preferred method to build a retaining wall to fill in with gravel before the slab gets poured?
Hey there Paul & Emily, glad to see your expanding your workload. Just waiting for that estimate to get completed? Still trying to nail down the exact land. I've completed my basic plans on the computer with Menards so it gives me a final price for materials and a list of what exactly I'll need to complete the project. Keep in touch, thanks.
Yes! We are behind on estimates right now for spring projects just because we didn’t expect to be able to do so much outside still! We will be in touch!
I just toured a metal building with metal I-beam structure. 150 feet by 300 feet with 30 foot angled one-way ceiling.
The pillars at the back wall were all in line, but mistaking poured 8 inches off of line
Since they could not shorten the 28 inch tall I-beam truss, they decided to just gerry-rig the whole fricking back-wall, to where only two of the four bolts in the pillars were used.
Somehow no official person / inspector stopped them.
Cool video! It always cracks me up at some of the names for different things in construction. Gerts is one of them lol where in the heck did that name come from anyway 😂
Haha yes some of them are really curious
Did you explain why on the first wet set bracket you put the 2x4 on the outside of the string line and the others the 2x4 was inside the string line?
Why do you use a mixture of dry set and wet set brackets. Would it be easier to set set all or dry set all?
🏴👍
Great video bro. The concrete batch looks kinda dry. What concrete slump did you order?
For us lay people could you please review how you marked the wet and dry brackets on the footings? When you said 2 4 and a half plus ten, I'm not sure where you measure from and to where. Plus, did you make your cement footings 30x40 on center of each footing? Also, why is the string line on the inside portion of each footing? When you're measuring from wet bracket to wet bracket, is this on center, and is the inside portion of the bracket, the open end, lined up with the string? Is the string lined up to the outside edge of the girts?
Hi Paul Jack from south Africa again...the pour and bracket set went flawlessly, so thanks for the intel on timing. In this vid you say you wait 48 hours before putting beam load onto the piers? Online all I can find is sites saying wait 7 days before load bearing...Ideally I'd like to startup Monday which would be 72 hours since pour....would you say that's enough time? Just putting the uprights and bearers up.
What is the reasoning for the placement of the wet set brackets being more to the outside rather than closer to the center of the pier?
thank you for these great detailed videos
That just means that the concrete form was off.
I have a question for you where do you get your materials from the post brackets tied to the footings and Wood package and thank you for sharing my God continue to bless you with the work of the labor of your hands
This project we got the materials from Menards
I would like to know the diameter of drill for concrete footing, and how deep did you drill?
What size garage doors? I can't seem to find in any of your videos
No footings or rebar in the piers?
You formed a form around a sono tube
Hi Paul, did you get the materials from Menards?
Yes, we’ve used them for a lot of projects but are looking into some other places too
Judging by the shadows as your walking around - looks like the garage will shadow the house ?
It shouldn’t be too bad
Just curious why such a massive pier, when the brackets sit so close to the edge??
Where did you get the post frame kit from
Hey Paul is this a kit and if so where did u order from?
We designed it and then ordered the materials from Menards
Are those Marine Corps Danner boots?
Nope just some really dirty paint covered Nikes 🤣
I dont understand why dry set brackets instead of wet set are used on the corners ?
So you'r back at your in-law's place? I recognize the house.
Yep! They wanted a garage
Be sure to take some time for deer hunting Paul!
Maybe 2022 will be that time 😂
Have you ever build a barndominium with a crawl space (non concrete floor) and is there significant price difference?
I have not...price may be comparable depending on what you use for your footing and crawl space wall. I would probably use a DIY product like an ICF wall.
To fix/remodel utilities in slab youre looking at $4000+ just to cut slab and repour.
Your holes were that far off? Center for maximum quality.
What diameter post hole (or, augers size)
16” auger and they end up between 18-20”
@@MrPostFrame our area (7 county greater metro [Minneapolis/Saint Paul]) requires a 24" diameter and 48" deep no matter what post spacing. Footings have to be poured 6" thick. No pre-cast drop-in "cookies" allowed
Are you all okay ?
Was your build affected by the storm ?
greetings paul; bother in law (emily's brother or your sister's husband?)
Sisters husband

.
So dark
Not as instructional as I hoped.
Peace of almost useless information. When I was taking civil engineering in college 50 years ago one thing I remember was concrete sets best at 58F. Like the way you lay things out.
Good to know though!
Better make sure that you are licensed. If not, your state could level massive fines on you. Some states, it is a felony to do GC work without a license. You clearly know what you are doing, but you still need to be licensed to protect yourself and your family. So this is not a criticism of you.
Thank you! We are licensed.
@@MrPostFrame That is wonderful to hear. I am a licensed GC and a Civil Engineer in AZ and I am one of your greatest fans. You do exceptional work.
From time to time I have offered suggestions, but they are not reflective of the quality of your work, and in your area, how things are built may differ to some degree.
Good luck with your many projects.
