It would be SO MARVELOUS if more post frame construction videos would go into detail regarding installing end trusses. There is not a single video on RUclips that goes into detail on the subject. A closer look at how to square a large building would be nice as well. I know there are videos on the squaring subject, however, they do not go into specifics on where exactly to "tie" the chains or straps and how, where and why they are "tied" in those specific locations...in addition to what actually moves with the tensioning of each used chain or strap.
R&R Building has covered all these details many times.
@@kenknight4560 he hasn't covered end trusses and his building squaring videos don't explain specific positions to tie chains or straps. Not even in his 42 minutes and 45 seconds "How To Square a Roof" video.
@@EscobarReuben im pretty sure it's just hooked to where you need to pull the truss in or out. not a specific spot. im going to attempt mine with wall turnbuckles cause i don't want to buy a bunch of chains

I noticed that the 2x12 headers were nailed to the sides of the posts, rather than notching the post to saddle on the header. Wouldn't this place all the load from the header on the nails? Thanks for the video I like the detailed explanations you are providing.
MR & RR have this 8 foot bay truss system mastered with exact detail. On my tiny post beam 12x16 shed build, I added Appleton Supply 11WB12 galv steel 45 deg angle "T" wall bracing grooved into the girts. These are hard to find in stock except Menards -- most home builders don't use these anymore. For these post frames, these seem ideal! I would do 4 per corner to create 4 structural triangles ($12 ea, only $200 total material). My shed barely creaks in a 45MPH wind. of course , check with your own engineer first.

Thanks for sharing! Looks like you nailed your wall girts on like everybody else but I had someone telling me I need to use screws. Love to hear your opinion on that thanks!
On our current builds we initially secure them with screws and then come back with 4 1/2" ring shank nails. You can use screws, more expensive, we prefer the nails.

That's the same way I'm building mine but my trusses are timber frame with hidden post inside and for my walls and roof, I'm using SIP's. The foundation is ICF.
Exact same size as the garage I had built last year. I have an additional garage door on one side towards the back for a total of four.
Just curious if you have thought of any inexpensive ways to make the concrete-pillars more accurate ?

Your techniques remind me of Kyle from RR Buildings. Will there be a entry door besides the garage doors? Would it have been easier to put all the fill dirt and gravel in before putting up the framing?
Nice clear explanation. Thanks. If the bottom skirt board or purlin is at ground level and attached to the posts, what happens as the ground under those purlins freezes and pushes up but they are attached to the posts that won’t lift because the concrete goes to below the frost line? Do people have problems with this over years of movement? Can those bottom purlins be slotted and not fastened tightly to the posts so they can float with the ground level as it raises and lowers? I’m building a pole barn next Spring in Northern Vermont and frost is a big issue for us. I am looking for guidance on how to handle this.
On the gable end, I don't put a top girt, because the bottom cord of the truss makes that redundant.
What you plan to do in between the piers to bring it up to grade. And also what do you do on top of the piers ? Does concrete go on top of them
Mark your perlins for all the trusses at once? That’s what Kyle does.

J B, I think they are usually spaced 24 inches on center. I think I picked that up from RR Buildings.

Awesome build, truly you are a craftsman! What size nail are you using to fasten the purlins, and will there be addition fastening to the trusses?
Looks like 6" 60D post frame nails. (At least thats what menards shipped me for my building). And that's all the prints called for but I added hurricane brackets to every other purlin just in case. Have seen wind peel the roof and purlins right off the trusses.

How far above the grade board on the bottom of the posts do you put your first girt? The rest of the girts are spaced 2' center right?
Post barn framing is interesting but I am not a huge fan of it because it is not as strong as "western framing" (traditional 16" OC framing for exterior walls, with a double top plate and a single bottom plate). If western framing is sheared with 1/2" OSB it can withstand hurricanes and even some (not all) tornadoes. The shearing of the exterior walls also makes the structure extremely rigid, so if the foundation shifts slightly, but wood structure moves less. Unless you shear this garage with OSB, it will have a relatively weak lateral load strength (I am a Civil Engineer).
Perhaps where you are at, the post barn framing is preferred because it uses less wood. It is possible that a garage doesn't need to be super strong and storm resistant. Also, this system may allow an easier installation of floor insulation and radiant heating.
Great job! I am not criticizing the use of barn framing because frankly, I don't know enough about it. It is interesting to see such a radically different approach to framing than what we use here in AZ..
Can You make the piers higher and do a subfloor instead of a slab creating like a crawl space underneath?
I would think you would want to square up the roof before putting the facia jacks, if you have to make adjustments this will throw off your facia board.
Is there a benefit to installing an over hang jack as opposed to just ordering the trusses with an over hang built in?

the stud on top adds an additional 3.5 inches so it would make the fascia board really big
Does the post adjustment you are marking only deal with leveling the concrete floor? I didn't see where any adjustment was made it the actual length of the post, making me think it only has to do with the slab board? I guess I am confused but curious. Thanks.
he just adds the difference at the bottom of the post, then sets his story board. once he finds grade, which ever bracket is low he just adds it to the bottom of that post and then proceeds with the story board

So the grade mark just has to do with where the slab will end up on the posts? And those posts where you had to add to the bottom a bit, means that the overall length of those posts will be slightly longer than the "zero" post right? I think i got it? Maybe? Lol

I'm curious if you could use a nail gun on the girts and other areas, or would the nails be too short or weak?
Nails would be too short
I always use 3 inch nails in a gun. They are not too short, you just need to use more.

I don't have a construction background. I am adding a 30x40x16 on my property and this video was a big help. I have viewed and drawn the normal construction using 16"OC but now I like the post frame. Love your videos. They are so informative and you discuss what you’re doing very well. One thing that bugged me was the way you staggered your roof purlins because the screws aren’t going to be perfectly straight on the roof when finished. I don’t know if you plan on going back and fixing that or not. I thought you said in the video you would but at the end I saw they were staggered.

I understand completely. The top height for the trusses will be level all the way around. When the floor is poured, it will be leveled so your floor to ceiling height is the same all the way around the building 😢
Make those post adjustments easier and less confusing by adjusting hight of your center leg of your laminated beam you are making up top. Secondly your span to outside wall is 30. Why are you cutting off length of trusses. Let them go long to your desired overall width. Add into the span the length you require for eaves overhang on both sides to instal ventilation. For questions on either....watch some rrbuilding videos. I know you are just starting out...you are doing great, he learned those easier fixes over decades of building. Easier...not complicated is best!!
i'm pretty sure hes cutting the trusses to help make sure his center is center. if you run them long you might tend to go one way or the other. i really don't understand you center post remark. i love watching kyle to but i think this guy is pretty on point.
Why not do the story board from the top and cut off the bottom instead of having to remove the center board, cutting that, and reinstalling it? Wouldn't lopping an 1/8", 5/8", or whatever your measurement is off the bottom be easier?
You may have answered this...forgive me. Why did you wet-set some brackets and dry-set others?

@@michaelnash8435 not speaking for MR, but some builders don't use the wet set at the corner because the face of the bracket would be on the outside of the corner and you'd need to notch the grade board in order to fit correctly. The dry set can be cut in half and set at a 90 to avoid that issue, but IMO it weakens the dry set bracket even further.
I am not sure why he used them at the overhead door locations.
He uses them at the door location because the bracket would be in the way for the door trim
