Mining is how I got my fleet carrier. I then discovered that I could combine Exploring, Bio Scanning, and Mining into long cruises far outside the bubble. Whenever I jump into a new system I scan all the bodies, and if they have Biologics I land scan all of those. Water worlds, ammonia worlds terraformable worlds, and ELWs all get surface scanned. If there are ringed planets, they all get surface scanned and I note if there are hotspots, and if there are I will mine them for a while, usually just one full load in my Python. Then move to another system. Being able to store all those minerals on the fleet carrier means I can just keep on exploring and not have to sell my load first. Once in a while I will find a virgin planetary ring with dozens of hot spots, often with three, four or five different minerals. These planets get a bookmark, and often a number of cargo holds full of mined minerals. When I do come back to the bubble, I can be very picky about where and when to sell my minerals for the best prices.
Outfits like ED Tools or EDDB are all well and good for helping you locate a hot spot. As long as you remember that just because it's a hot spot for whatever material is no assurance the material in question is present in the ring. Laser mining is an excellent way to make quite a bit of credits quickly. But there's only a very few places where strictly laser mining is profitable. The same for core mining. Depending on a little bit of skill and quite a bit of luck you can get from about 6 tons to 18 tons of product from a single core asteroid if core mining is the only thing you do. If the ring your in only yields 1 or 2 core asteroids per hour, you're not going to make much. It's why I always set my mining ships up to cover as many options as possible. Laser, Core, Surface, Subsurface.
Great guide, covers pretty much the entire thing, wish I saw it a week ago before learning it "on the job", but my friend taught me well... Except for nearly blowing myself up, once. One extra thing! If you are not sure about the shape of an asteroid and don't want to waste limpets, you can verify that an asteroid has a core by visually spotting the fissures themselves! They stand out quite a bit if you know what you are looking for.
I haven't played Elite for more than an hour or two here or there since before Horizons came out. Coming back to the game for Odyssey and I have to say, I love your videos. You have a way of explaining things that I find to be engaging and informative, seemingly a rarity for videos about Elite. You've earned my subscription, keep doing what you're doing and thank you for what you've done so far.
Yeah the painite rush. Wasn’t there a triple LTD rush before that? That’s the worst part about the hotspot nerf. There were always FCs in the big mining systems selling fuel, limpets and buying minerals.
@@prisonerofthehighway1059 There was a triple LTD hotspot in Borann. Id check EDDB every few hours and at times there was a station that would do like 450k-550k per tonne and I'd go get a full annaconda worth and make half a bil in like 3 hours of casual lazer mining... Was unreal
This was like 2019 era tho. I made billions then life got in the way I took a 4 year break from it and have been on and off since. Mostly on recently though :) o7
@@legitbeans9078 You’re bringing back memories lol. FDEV really broke the game for about 6 months lol. They broke the painite rush, then everybody started chasing “The Egg” and the nerf for that broke the pulse scanner and you had to fly backwards in free cam to go core mining lol. My joystick broke about that time and I decided not to replace it because the game was such a mess. I’ve been vicariously enjoying the Thargoid war and with the new engineering rework, I think I’m ready to come back as well. o7 Commander. See you in the black.
Anyone remember The Egg. It was an asteroid with an obscene amount of low temperature diamonds. You had to use the sub surface missiles to get to them but you could leave the ring and return and the deposits would return. I used to be able to drop in and find it within a minute. I could fill my Anaconda's 240 ton capacity in around an hour and they would sell for over amillion a ton. Only way I could buy my fleet carrier.
Just for the record, while working the sub surface deposits can be a serious learning curve. The payout on them is WELL worth the time and effort of equipping and learning them. Depending on your skill level, a single sub surface deposit can yield anywhere from about 3T to over 25T of product. A single sub surface deposit or two can make the difference between a wasted trip and a profitable mining run. You hear folks talk about those lovely (magic?) LTD eggs you can farm? Those are sub surface deposits.
You know, I actually have a Clipper, and hardly ever use it. I tried it for laser mining, but liked the Krait and Python better. But core mining might be a great use for it!
im back, did a 3hr mining session and got a full cargo of alexadrite, found a place selling for 750,000 cr then +144 mil in my bank yipee, i was flying without rebuy but i was playing solo and i can just alt+f4
I was core mining a few years back when Diamonds was a mans best friend and it made me hundreds of millions. Enough to buy and kit out a Anaconda, then it was nerf'd and i stopped playing lol
Distance from primary star is not much of a factor anymore with the advent of SCO FSDs. You can mine in smaller ships but you are limiting the amount of whatever you are mining you can collect at one time.
Inara is absolutely the worst source of information. It always tells me the exact opposite of what's in the game. It's easier just to look at what sells for a good price at a local station near the ring you're mining.
@Mile13Gaming its been everything I've tried to use it for, from finding a level 7 power plant to finding the sales price of palladium. (It multiplies sales prices by 10!)
If you want to help make websites such as inara more accurate, be sure to be running "ED Market connector" in the background so that you send updated data to these datbases
the cheap version is the keelback 3m for the ship and a bit more for internal. comapred to a python at 56m +expensive internal. Want to try core mining whitout breaking the bank. go keelback.
Hey, thanks that aired comment is much the same as mine...ah ha ha mine, but I have lost how to make a profit on mining till I saw your very intuitive video thank you o7. CMND, Jay Delta

OK, this is an awesome idea. I'm definitely going to do this. Hmm, I might just make a video out of this.
If I do, I'll call it "The Mike Wilson".
Wow, amazing guide, I been watching gujides for years and this is by far the better explained and I love the pace of info dump.

I absolutely *love* your mining guides. I've made *so* many credits since your laser mining video. :D Thanks for these.
Thank you so much! That means a lot!

New player here. I appreciate the video so much. Broke it down barney style o7
Glad I could help. This one was super fun to make! 🙂
Great work on keeping the updated guides coming! it really helps new and returning players.
Thanks! Love your username by the way!

Great video! Been a few years since I've jumped into Elite, this was a nice refresher.
Awesome, thanks! Welcome back!
I burst out laughing. "An Eagle? Really?"
Good guide by the way!
Ha, thanks!
first time minning so this vid helped alot
So glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
love all your vids... i think the old engineering one is still the funniest 😂
I made my first 10 bil back before they nerfed ltd lazer mining, also there was a triple hotspot in borann... who remembers that?

Great tutorial! Feels like an interesting school class🤓
I strain to think of a higher compliment! Thank you!

BTW my fave Core miner is the Clipper. Convergence isn't great but it's manoeuvrable and has lots of cargo space.
You know, I actually have a Clipper, and hardly ever use it. I tried it for laser mining, but liked the Krait and Python better. But core mining might be a great use for it!
Great job. Another informative video.
Thanks!
I tried mining in ED years ago and couldn't get into it. Might give this a shot.
Core mining is a ton of fun, and laser mining is probably the most accessible lucrative activity in Elite. Give it a whirl!
Very well done guide.
to get to the far away plants you could upgrade to the new (SCO) frame shift drives
Finaly! Thanks!
You bet!

Good callout. SCO has been a game-changer. Now if I can just keep from overshooting my target half the time, LOL.
I use my Federal Corvette for mining. Why? Cuz it makes me feel cool. 😎
Can the Type 8 be a good laser & core miner? I really like the look of that ship. Thanks.
Absolutely. Maybe I'll do a video on different ships for laser mining. Wouldn't mind trying a few more out myself.
Core mining demystified.
Limpets are gonna limpet :-) You are hilarious
I FORGOT MY LIMPETS................
Welcome to Elite. Everyone does it!
