Easter Island, Spanish Isla de Pascua, also called Rapa Nui, Chilean dependency in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is the easternmost outpost of the Polynesian island world. It is famous for its giant stone statues. The island stands in isolation 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometres) east of Pitcairn Island and 2,200 miles west of Chile. Forming a triangle 14 miles long by seven miles wide, it has an area of 63 square miles (163 square kilometres); its highest point, Mount Terevaka, is 1,969 feet (600 metres) above sea level.
To its original inhabitants the island is known as Rapa Nui (“Great Rapa”) or Te Pito te Henua (“Navel of the World”). The first European visitors, the Dutch, named it Paaseiland (“Easter Island”) in memory of their own day of arrival. Its mixed population is predominantly of Polynesian descent; almost all live in the village of Hanga Roa on the sheltered west coast. Pop. (2002) 3,304; (2017) 7,750.
    People
The island’s population represents the easternmost settlement of a basically Polynesian subgroup that probably derived from the Marquesas group. The original Rapa Nui vocabulary has been lost except for some mixed Polynesian and non-Polynesian words recorded before the Tahitian dialect was introduced to the decimated population by missionaries in 1864. Today Spanish is generally spoken. In their traditions, the islanders consistently divide themselves into descendants of two distinct ethnic groups, the “Long-Ears” and the “Short-Ears” (see below). Intermarriage is common, and an influx of foreign blood has become increasingly dominant in recent years.
    Archaeology
The island is famous for its gigantic stone statues, of which there are more than 600, and for the ruins of giant stone platforms (ahus) with open courtyards on their landward sides, some of which show masterly construction. Archaeological surveys were carried out in 1886, 1914, and 1934; archaeological excavations were initiated in 1955. The excavations revealed that three distinct cultural periods are identifiable on the island.
The early period is characterized by ahus at Tahai, Vinapu, and Anakena, carbon-dated to about 700-850 ce. The first two were admired and described by Captain Cook; the wall in Anakena remained hidden below ground until it was excavated archaeologically in 1987. The excavations in Anakena have revealed that a variety of statues were carved in the early period, among them a smaller prototype of the middle-period busts, which mainly differ from the latter by their rounded heads and stubby bodies. Another type was a realistic sculpture in full figure of a kneeling man with his buttocks resting on his heels and his hands on his knees, in one case with his ribs exposed, all features characteristic of pre-Inca monuments at Tiwanaku in South America.
In the middle period, about 1050-1680, statues were deliberately destroyed and discarded, and all ahus were rebuilt with no regard for solar orientation or masonry fitting. The sole desire seems to have been to obtain strong platforms capable of supporting ever taller and heavier busts, the classical moai of the middle period.

Hotu Matua is the older brother to Hotu Roa.
Hotu Roa was the Captain of the Tainui Canoe that left Rapa Nui in search of another land to live in and following the Southern Cross Star Constellation bought them to New Zealand(Aoetearoa)

I doubt I will ever make it to Easter ,if I did I would only leave when they made me. I hate technology absolutely hate it have no social media other then an email which is how I'm on here and I had to have it for work. I prefer to spend the nights gazing at the sky talking to god. You know why not everyone sees or hears god is because we take everything for granted I see god in the eyes of my dog when I walk in the house, that child at the supermarket that smiles when u see it, the Caterpillar on the leaf that's blowing in the wind that he put there just for you. It's amazing the things we miss everyday if I didn't have to work all I would do is gaze at the sky and just enjoy the time i have left. May gods blessings and good energy come to all who read this. Be safe and godspeed.

Man, I am 19 years old and already feel depressed bcs of the way we have to live. You have to study to get a job and spend your whole life working to earn just a living just to survive and then retire and die. I am ready to go to a far isolated island like Tristan du cunha or easter island and I am ready to work as a farmer there or whatever I can not to survive but just be isolated from all this stress and stuff

You are still young alot of life ahead of you, find somthing you will enjoy as a career it may take a few trys but there are alot of trades that pay well and no disrespect but the construction trade will be in high demand in a bit because the young people dont want to work in it I'm a welder/fabricator it pays well. Had I not been stupid with my money I would be well off today. And as far as welding goes eccently all you have to do is learn the trade companys will give you a test each job you start. Biggest thing is find somthing you enjoy, when you do you will not work your whole life you will play. That's not easy to do but it can be done. Good luck my friend and Godspeed.

Very interesting points of view, that first woman has. As far as the children go, they do that all over the world. Its not just on Easter island ( Rapa Nui ) unfortunately that’s same stuff happens In every country around the world! The most of the children don’t want anything todo with ancient teachings. Or any thing religion. It’s getting worst every year , it seems like there is no respect coming from the Millennials. They all seem to think the world owes them something . FACT: Easter Island IS NOT AN ISLAND! The locals would never know this. Easter Island is the apex of a mountain that rises over 6000 feet from the south pacific seabed floor. Just because the apex rises out of the mountain does not make it an island. You have to imagine, when you are visiting this Easter (Mountain) Island that you are walking on top of a mountain. It changes the entire perspective.

Hey. I heard and seen , one of the the park rangers on Rapa Nui where the statues are in a line like 15 I think , on a huge flat pedestal . That very rude park ranger named Philippe was yelling at the 2 tourists for stepping on a small rock barrier in the middle of the sight. He yell called names at them calling them stupid, being forceful , tried to push an with camera off a pile of rocks he was standing on in front of the gate trying to leave.
What ever happened to that park ranger on Easter island?
They have the video that I’m talking about on RUclips. There are a few copies of the disorderly park ranger floating around RUclips now. . That ranger needs to be fired . And should never be allow to work with any foreigners ever again. He apparently had a problem with the camera man and his girlfriend. I haven’t heard the out come. Of what happened to the park ranger ? And If he still works for the park services on Rapa Nui anymore ? I won’t ever schedule a trip to Easter island if that horrible ranger still has a job with the national Chilean, park .
