Same, he was so infuriating on my first attempt. Due to the way 4U and other games handled him I've never really fought him that much until recently though.
As a Hunter who got his start in the PC version of World, the earliest introduction to Kirin I recall was NCHProduction's HR49 animation about fighting Kirin. That animation made me exceedingly wary as I got close to that rank, just to fight thundercorn with a bud and beat thundercorn with only one cart on my part, making me say to myself "Well, that wasn't so bad." And then the pre-Rajang quest version of Kirin rolled around on Iceborne, old Shatterhorn as I recall the Admiral calling that Kirin. *COGS AND SPRINGS,* old Shatterhorn was everything I had heard about the HR49 quest and then some. Nearly failed that quest just to get the kill with a Clutch Claw attempt to soften hide. Or the head, probably the head.
Oroshi Kirin is one of five monsters I legitimately feel is missing from iceborne and I wish he was released alongside alatreon, the other missing monsters for me are Jade barroth, gigginox, balful gigginox, and great wulg

Kirin is probably one of the most consistently terrible fights in the series. It’s awful at worst, and annoying at best. However, the super tacky armor makes up for it. The male Kirin armor is perfect for showing someone that “I’m the boss of this gym”
Honestly, I'm suprised Kirin didn't return for Rise considering he's based on the yokai he's named after who would worked well that theming along with a revamp to his moveset like Kushala got. I like his design alot and how majestic he can be but found the fight annoying in GU.

Also, interesting bit of info about Kirin in Monster Hunter: World, it is the only elder in that game to have a Low Rank version (except Zorah Magdaros). It's not unheard of in the series, Shagaru Magala was the final boss of low rank in 4U, Lagiacrus and Ceadeus start as Low Rank monsters in 3U, but it's one of the few cases of it happening with no fanfare or story significance. Shagaru was the final fight of 4U low rank, Lagiacrus was the flagship and Ceadeus was again the final boss of low rank in 3U. Kirin's Low Rank quest in World is a random optional quest and, while it does unlock the Thunderproof Mantle, there's no big deal made about it being an Elder. I can't think of another Elder who's been in that position, at least this early into the game.
oh i can. Teostra, Kushala, Chameleons and Lunastra. all in FU Low Rank aaaand... no fanfare, not even an acknowledgement from anyone besides the quest description 😅
All the gen 2 elders are probably accessible from low rank in FU because they were available there in Dos too, but in that game they made up for it by being much more story-prominent and overall important in progression. Also Lagiacrus isn’t an elder dragon.
Oroshi Kirin was referenced in Iceborne game files, suggesting he was very much considered before being axed at some point. I first fought Kirin in World (having come straight from 3rd gen) and really liked how I had to considerably change my approach to fight him effectively. All the friends I hunted with hated him tho 😂 Also fought him in GenU since, he feels just less exciting there imo. The lightning bolts streaking across the ground in World really give the fight some much needed variety.
I agree that the Tower theme fits Kirin pretty nicely, both of them do. Also funny thing is that Oroshi Kirin along with Alatreon were originally supposed to be in base World but were scrapped in favor of the crossover monsters.
I feel like Kirin is one of those Monsters that has slowly became less and less special/ legendary as what it began as. In World it literally gets introduced as a random low rank side quests, and the only low rank elder you fight in LR. And while i love its redesign, i really want it to get that phantom blue shine back. Besides that, I hope that whenever Kirin returns, its both in a more important quest (doesn't need to be main story), with its own theme. At best probably the original Tower theme, as its both named after it and thanks to Sunbreak, a majority of people probably now associate the 2. tower theme, with the forlorn arena. Also, while i can agree, that the old fights weren't that best, I still feel like im one of the few people that really like the 5gen fight. It is a really weapon specific fight, but i never hear anyone liking, any of kirins fights.
Apparently, Oroshi Kirin was supposed to be added to MHW along with Alatreon, but both were scrapped because of Behemoth and Leshen/Ancient Leshen being added instead. While Alatreon was added in MHWI, Oroshi Kirin was not, likely replaced by Frostfang Barioth. I am not a fan of Kirin, so for me it was not a terrible loss. Although the coloring of Oroshi Kirin is awesome and, in MH4U, he is indeed less annoying than Kirin, so maybe Oroshi Kirin in Iceborne would have been a pleasant fight. We might see it in MH6.
A bit of a correction - the Tower themes never played for Kirin independently of the locale, the music was just named after him. The songs were dedicated to him, but they've never played independently of the locale. Edit: apparently, for MH4U, it actually did play the Tower theme independently of the locale! This is specific to MH4U though, none of the 2nd gen games have this.
Well this isn't even a unique situation for Kirin. The jungle theme is named after Congalala. And during the frenzied conga cutscene in 4u, they play a bit of his original theme.
The "songs being name after the Monster but not idependently" thing applies to the entirety of gen 1, gen 2, and most of gen 3. Kirin and Congalala are not unique.
I honestly think the coral highlands theme fits Kirin, especially when it gallops around. If i had to adjust it id make the lightning strikes (based almost entirely off world, as i got into the series in gen5) less random and more targeted and remove the paralysis.
the sword horse! man i love the reboot for Duck Tales, it's so good. I feel like you often don't mention the AI reworkings between the fourth and fifth generations of the games. Kirin in World has a lot of the same moves from previous iterations, this is true, but he jumps around a lot less often, and his lightning bolts have more forewarning with the shadows that appear on the ground before the bolts make contact. Kirin from World feels like a very different fight despite using the same moves.
