I love Shawn, but Nastia was my favorite gymnast at the 2008 Olympics - her grace and the interesting moves she'd add to her routines made her so lovely to watch! She deserved to win.
Actually Nastia was the harder worker. Shawn admitted that she only trained 5 hours a day, 6 days a week because she said that's all she needed. But Nastia trained 7 hours a day 6 days a week and never skipped practice for any holiday including Christmas. I think the sport was a little easier for Shawn because she had power. Nastia had to work more to get power.
I do believe that Shawn, at any other competition was better than Nastia. But, Nastia peaked at just the right time and had her best day ever exactly when she needed it. I wish Shawn won, but Nastia deserved it that day because she had the better day. That's all it really comes down to in the end, who's the best on that day.
Letissia Scott Actually I am pretty sure Shawn's coach Chow made that decision. His philosophy is that you don't need hundread hours of practice too be good.
Great to see 2 such different gymnasts in terms of body composition and style who are both so exciting to watch in Liukin and Shawn Johnson. I'm very impressed with the US women's gymnastics program- it's come a long way since the early 1980s.
Neither can even compare to the 70s gymnasts. And Biles is an ungraceful brick that overcompensates with 'strength' that basically only comes from her literal midget size.
Does everyone not realize that her difficulty level was 7.7? She's not over scored, she got an 8.950, or something like that. Stop complaining, also you probably can't do this...
Yang Yilin and He Kexin both start from 7.7 too. In terms of lines I think that Yang Yilin was even better, but whatever.... Also Beth started at 7.8. However, during this era it seems relatively fair for the most part. She’s definitely a very good bar worker, but the dismount’s so ugly though....
Come on now!! Shawn didn't suck. She was no where near the elegance of Nastia, however, she had uber power and great skills. Both women were great in Thier own right.
She got an E score of 8.950, which she completely deserved. Her D score was 7.700, which more than explains why she had such a "high" score. Shawn got an E score of 8.975, so stop complaining.
nathaliexlr8 Nastia did not do any better on other parts of the routine than Shawn. And landings aren't everything but they count for a lot. Nastia's dismount is ugly with the legs apart, and landed way too forward and almost fell. Landings count for a lot, and that's why Nastia and her dad were whining that she didn't win the gold on uneven bars when she stuck her dismount and the Chinese girl didn't.
I love how at 2:08 you can see other gymnasts and coaches really watching Nastia's routine to the end. The same thing happened when she was on FX. I don't think any other competitor captivated audiences like that.
Clearly everyone bitching about Nastia's score has no judging background. Take the class, it's 70$ in the US. The 06-08 code is also still available to look at on USA gymnastics website. These are more than likely the deductions at a maximum, which her lowest E score counted was 8.9. For all the people bitching and moaning about Nastia's UB being "overscored" (LOL!), just look at it as the judges' way of compensating for Nastia's ridiculous underscoring on Vault one rotation prior. :P
She’s really beautiful. Nastia is one of my favorite gymnasts of all time. I like Riley McCusker and Gabrielle Douglass. I have many favorite gymnasts.😊🌹👊🏾
It's easy to pick everything apart watching a video. The judges are an international panel and they have way more experience than you do. In the end the right gymnasts won the right medals in the AA.
The judges were very generous with her E score here (8.95). There was definitely more than one point in deduction. The dismount alone was -0.3 legs apart more than shoulder width, -0.1 flexed feet, -0.3 large step, and -0.1-0.3 for the low chest position. That's 7-9 tenths. Then other obvious errors are her late ono 1/2 (-0.3) and leg sep/too archy pak (-0.1). Plus she should have gotten 0.1 off for each short handstand on the inbar 1/2, ono, healy, and 1/2 turn on the low bar. And if you wanted to be harsh, you could take off for bent knees in the giants before the gienger, tkatchev, and dismount (-0.3 in total) and -0.1 for amplitude on the tkatchev.
Deductions: Dismount: Legs apart more than shoulder width: -0.3 Flexed feet: -0.1 Large step: -0.3 Low chest position: -0.1 to -0.3 (we'll use -0.2 as an average) Total for Dismount: -0.9 Other Obvious Errors: Late ono 1/2: -0.3 Leg separation/too archy pak: -0.1 Total for Other Obvious Errors: -0.4 Short Handstands: Inbar 1/2: -0.1 Ono: -0.1 Healy: -0.1 1/2 turn on the low bar: -0.1 Total for Short Handstands: -0.4 Harsh Deductions: Bent knees in the giants before the Gienger, Tkatchev, and dismount: -0.3 Amplitude on the Tkatchev: -0.1 Total for Harsh Deductions: -0.4 Summing Up All Deductions: Dismount: -0.9 Other Obvious Errors: -0.4 Short Handstands: -0.4 Harsh Deductions: -0.4 Total Deductions: 0.9 + 0.4 + 0.4 + 0.4 = 2.1 Calculating the Expected Execution Score: The maximum possible E score in gymnastics is 10.00. One of the highest scores from the 2005-2008 CoP. You CAN'T compare it to the scores with any other code, there you were able to count 10 skills, now you can only count 8 skills. The skills also changes in difficulty in the different codes, for example the layout stepout on beam is now a C difficulty, in 2008 it was a D...
Exactly. There are 3 different competitions that go on at the olympics. You have the team, who all wear the same leotard. In the individual all around final, you can wear whatever leotard you want as long as it has a logo of what country you are competing for. 3rd, in the event finals, you can wear whatever leotard you want, although most gymnasts go with their country's colors.
As you might notice, that is Khorkina and this is Nastia, she does what fits her to avoid hitting another bar, she gets rightful deductions for all of her mistakes and that still leaves her with high scores because she IS one of the most exquisite gymnasts of the last decade. You don't have to like her, but claiming that she is bad or nitpicking her work just shows that you are delusional and bitter for some reason. Get over it and enjoy the beauty of the sport.
I have actually never seen Khorkina bend her legs on her bar routines. Probably because she had a routine made to help her height. But the bars can be adjusted to fit her height. But it also meant she would need more swing to get her transitions up and down.
I'm sure her father who is an experienced coach and Nastia worked out the best routine they could. If she could transition better with a different bar adjustment I'm sure they would have done so. This was the best that she could do and she maximized it under each of the codes that she worked under from her debut through to the Olympics.
I never once said Nastia was bad,nor have I nitpicked in her bar routine. The only thing I mentioned pertaining to her was that the bars can be adjusted, but she would need more swing in order to transition up and down. The only reason why she got high scores during that quad was because of a 7.7 difficulty, which only 3 other gymnasts could top or match that score. If Nastia wanted to eliminate piking her hips, she could have altered the bar height, but she would need more swing for transitions.
its not a matter of there being a cap on what u can score, you have a difficulty score which depends on the moves you actually do in your routine and then an execution score out of ten
I hate how everyone says "so many form breaks" and "overscored". Obviously, if she gets sky-high scores at every competition, there aren't many form breaks.
Her difficulty is really high and the same as He Kexin but i have to admit even though i was rooting for America in 2008, Nastia was a little high scored. Yang was perfect and i believe she should have got second but... i guess it's not my choice to make... oh well... All 3 of them are beautiful and amazing on bars
Each time the bar bends when she grabs it makes my stomach tie in knots. I know the bars are sturdy and won’t break, but I still feel queazy when they bend.
No? The 2005-2008 CoP (the one you see being applied in the video) counted the top 10 most difficult elements, meaning that Liukin's D-score here is a 7.7. The code you are talking about is the one that was applied during the last quadrennium or the current quad.
@@vanillamarshmallow there was a typo. It should've read: "it doesnt MATCH the rest of the routine." 🤣🤣🤣 the difference a single letter can make. I hope you didnt thought i was being rude. So I apologize for the typo
She should have tried to learn the Strong (overshoot with 1.5 twist). As it is written in the code, you don't need to land it in handstand. She her low - high transitions were done from that side of the bar, it would have removed another kip cast handstand 1/2 for her, saving her some energy and opportunities for deductions on the 1/2 turn. heck, she could have done it after the in bar and eliminated the Tkachev, which probably had some built in deductions.
whatever. nastia deserves it. Shawn has a much lower difficulty score on the uneven bars and a lower execution as well. (1.4 in fact). Their beam routines are almost the same difficulty, but Nastia stuck her dismount, when shawn had a huge balance check on her full twist. She landed very low on her dismount plus took and step. Nastia's floor routine has great artistry while Shawn goes with her difficulty. Although nastia's vault (final score) is 0.8 lower than Shawn's her other events make it up
