Essential upgrades for your First Gen Tundra (on a budget)

- Опубликовано: 11 июл 2024
- Hey there! In this video, I talk through some awesome upgrades for the First Gen Tundra from the years 2000-2006. I consider most of these to be upgrades to what came from the factory, rather than modifications that we are adding from the aftermarket. With that said, there is a lot of aftermarket support for these trucks as well, and you can quickly find yourself in the modification rabbit hole for off-road goodies. Hope you find the video helpful, and thanks for watching! - Sal

really like this guy hes not an ass or a weird person like all these other channels. seems genuine
I appreciate that, thanks for watching!
Man reach out to Josh at First Gen Offroad for any suspension parts , He's figured out a economy front end lift and shock setup to make them ride better than spacer lifts or 5100's on the top notch. You have your truck looking good!
Which lift on the website are you talking about?
For sure man, I've told myself that once my stock shocks blow out at some point I'll upgrade to a legit leveling kit with new shocks and my first stop was going to be Josh. I've heard only good things
@@Rooki3_ Billstien 5100's on the 2nd notch & a pair with OME springs (I might be wrong about the brand of springs but he's figured out how to get lift & quality ride, Not icon or king quality but for the money)
This video is worth it’s weight in gold. I’m buying everything on the list lol
Haha glad to hear it! Hope you're happy with it all, I think it makes a great difference. Thanks for watching!
I’ll do the same mostly, but from parts cars so it’s even cheaper
I think I’m selling my 16 eco boost and getting into a 1st gen tundy. Your videos inspired me. Also my eco boost is now at 114k and turning into a money pit.
Wow that's cool, the first gen will definitely feel more bare bones than the F-150 but its simplicity is pretty cool and almost nostalgic at this point with modern cars having screens on screens. Thanks for watching, and best of luck with finding a clean 1st gen!
Sal you should put led reverse lights. Makes backing up at night so much easier. Simple, cheap, effective.
That's a great point, and I've actually got them along with tail lights and an LED 3rd brake light too but didn't mention it in the video. Definitely a good upgrade to do, looks nice and has safety benefits too. Thanks for watching!
Another quality video from JDM Driveway! I appreciate the information and that you combined all of it into one video... with time stamps! Your filming and editing just keeps getting better and better. Great job!
That's great to hear, thanks for watching!
love your videos! 2001 tundra here and it's helping me a lot to learn about it
Love to hear it, thanks for watching!
Subscribing to this channel right now ! I've had my 00 tundra for almost 6 years and after being rear ended, having it "totaled" out and going through the process of getting a rebuilt title is making me appreciate it even more and the content here helps me take of her even more. !
Glad to hear it! I'm sure you're getting quite acquainted with the in's and out's while rebuilding it lol. Thanks for watching!
Awesome Vid man, like all the small upgrades.
I appreciate it, thanks for watching!
Great video, Tyler! I am installing an Atoto S8 today in my 02 Tundra and installing led lights in the cabin. You're a great wealth of retro upgrades! Much appreciated.
Awesome, thanks for watching!
What is the a t o t o S8?
Great batch of updates n upgrades!! Thanks for the tip on the ws sprayers...I've tried 2 different sets and they're still junk...
I built my own exhaust...got rid of the extremely restrictive wye pipe resonator setup...it may seem silly, but I used a hockey net tube frame for the bends, two tractor mufflers from Princess Auto (our version of Harbour Freight) and a buddies car lift...
I may have to post a walk through on my 03' Tundra Limited...you got me thinking buddy...
cheers from BC Canada
That's really funny that you used the hockey net pipe for the exhaust, I love it! Haha glad the video was helpful though, and yeah you should definitely do a walkthrough! We love seeing other trucks for ideas and such!! thanks for watching
I like this guy! Speaks clearly and to the point with no bs. JDM, you've got another subscriber. Thank you!
I appreciate that, thanks for watching!
Keep those Tundra videos coming!
Will do, thanks for watching!
Nice upgrade finds!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your tips. I’m going to start doing some on my 02 SR5
Awesome, thanks for watching!
I did the co-light projectors on my first gen tundra and it's probably the best thing I've ever done for it. a million times better seeing at night. glad I saw your video on it.
Sweeet! Glad to hear it man, thanks for watching
Man that's got to be a good feeling. I can't see crap at night in mine. In fact the fog lights make way more of a difference than the headlights themselves
Great Video. Love my 03 Tundra gonna do the LED interior lights thanks!!
Sweet! Love to hear it, and thanks for watching!
Sal, Thank you for your detailed ideas / upgrades for 1st Gen Tundra's. I recently followed your advice & upgraded to the pricey FJ Cruiser windshield sprayer nozzles.
WHAT a Difference!! I'll be following your other upgrades as I need. I'd found a 2002 Tundra Access cab w/ 84K miles (about 2 yrs. ago). Drove 2+ hrs. from Dallas to Austin to nab this cherry. Was a TEXAS company truck & garaged for N# of years. I'm working my way thru Trans. filter, Dif., Ball Joints, etc checks that this will be my LAST truck. Thank you for your detailed analysis of these 1st Gen Toyota Tundra's !!!!!
The nozzles are definitely pricey for what they are, but I'm glad you saw a noticeable difference. It was huge for me. Thanks for watching!
Nice truck. Mine 05 4.7 v8 4x4 182,000 running strong. Good video.
Sweet, glad to hear it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the pointers.
Thanks for watching!
Bro I got those headlights and at a steal, long story short they goofed the listing and the fan model was only 36$ for the pair "they fixed it now" but thank you so much for recommending them!
Oh dang that's sweet lol they're definitely a solid upgrade. Thanks for watching!
Your truck is sick! 🤩🫠
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
I just picked up a 2005 Tundra SR5 Crew Cab (double cab?). It's in the shop for safety right now (required in the province I live) and I can't wait to dig into it. I'm glad I found your channel and this video will act as a bit of a checklist for me for sure. Looks like there are lot's of little tweaks tht can be made without breaking the bank to improve the experience. Thanks!
Yeah for sure! Congrats on the new truck, and thanks for watching!
What province are you in? I’m looking for an ‘05 Crew in Manitoba but I’m awful worried about rust. 😅
@@lukemarvin I'm in Ontario but the truck I found spent most of it's life in BC according to the CarFax...was only here for a year or 2 and doesn't really have much rust.
I have a first gen tundra about to try the led lights thanks for the video
Great, thanks for watching!
Beautiful tundra man
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching
Great vid bud. You keep giving me more projects. haha
Haha love it, thanks for watching!
Same here lol
Buying my late dads 04 Tundra SR5 DoubleCab & found this video very informative. Thank you for the wiper spray info! Lol that was the only thing thats bugged me so far other than that a great upgrade frok my 00 Tacoma access cab
Haha yeah it's a simple change but makes a big impact. Thanks for watching
Sorry to hear of 😢your dad's passing
Hey sal, so glad to see you did the led upgraded interior lighting light I had suggested. It really does bring a bit of life into the cab doesn’t it? I think my next upgrade will be the squirt nozzles for the windshield, these oem ones suck haha! I’ve been Driving the truck more as the STi is at Subaru for warranty work (good ol rod knock came early) and have been falling in love with the tundra again!
Oh yeah the interior LED lights made such a difference. Thanks again for the advice. Too bad to hear about the STI though! Hope you can get it back on the road soon. Thanks for watching!
fyi i put in led lights about a year ago on the difference of electricity in the odometer made the whole dang thing go bad. needless to say make sure you’re careful with putting in the leds. they might look great (because they do) but might cause the odometer to short out and cause more headaches in hindsight. (i now have to subtract 140,000 miles from the odometer everytime i need to see how many miles i have 😐)
So cool to see all the comments about how everyone likes Sal's personality. I agree. So humble and genuine. Stay real, Sal!
I really appreciate that, and I love all the support from you guys!!
I got the little aluminum linkages for the rear windows too. If you carefully bend the steel arm the linkages attach to you can fine tune the fit when the window is closed. When they are fully latched you want the gasket to be firmly compressed so there's no sound or water leaking in.
Huh I never thought about trying that, that's a good tip! Thanks for watching
@@JDMDriveway Hey, thanks for the video, lot of good ideas. I can't claim to have invented the concept of bending that linkage arm, it was recommended on one of the first Gen Tundra forums or facebook groups, I forget which cause it was years ago. Just take it slow and think about where your tool will go if it slips, it'd be easy to smash the window if you tried to just hulk out on that bar without thinking it through. I don't remember it taking much force at all.
I have adjustable billstein shocks on my 1st gen, they are currently lowered on the front to give it that rake look (which I don’t like but was how the truck was when I bought it), but I plan to lift it on the front to equal it out. Another thing I learned later that makes the truck look higher is to remove that step plate on the side which I literally have never used. Great video man, definitely going to be buying that bed bushing.
Yep, I did the same exact thing taking off the side step, I never really used it anyways. Only downside is now my mom and other short people have a hard time getting in the truck! 😂 thanks for watching
@@JDMDriveway oh right 😂 yeah man cheers
Love the Video Sal, you inspired me to work on my 01 Limited Tundra. Keep them videos coming!
One thing I did to myns is a 1 and a half inch wheel spacer. It gives the tundra a more aggressive stance and matches it to the fender flares. Want to know your opinion on wheel spacers
Yeah dude, I've thought about wheel spacers too. I don't know a whole ton about them, and I think there a lot of misinformation out there. But to my understanding if they're installed correctly they're perfectly safe. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMDrivewayI don't think there's an issue of safety so much. But I will say any deviation from the stock in insect of the wheels is going to put stress on your hubs and axles
Great video thank you. 🤙🏻
Thanks for watching!
Perfect video for me I just bought my first vehicle, 2001 Tundra the same day you posted this lol, doing a lot small upgrades and also turning my truck into a Takumi Fujiwara's car in "Initial D" the AE86 cosplay, might as well, its already a white truck.
Hey that's great, congrats on the new truck! And I love the idea of getting inspiration from the AE86. Great show and great car. Thanks for watching
@@JDMDriveway 😁Thanks! your videos are very helplful and easy to understand!
I guess I'm old but what in the world are you talking about takumi fujimoto 86 or whatever? Sorry I've never been a gamer or into fantasy shows or whatever either... Just curious
Nice looking truck
Thanks for watching!
Saving this video for the future. Got myself a 2000 access cab with 280k on it, and no plans to ever get rid of it
Sweet, congrats on the new truck. Thanks for watching!
Lol. I did word that oddly. I've had it for 10 years, just have never really made too many upgrades like this, but now I'm gonna
Oh gotcha! Haha makes sense
Great looking tundra and thanks for the videos. I have a 2000 and there is no illumination behind any of the heater/ac/blower speed knobs at night with the lights on (maybe bulbs are burned out?). I didn't think it would come from the factory like this but really wasn't sure. Your video shows they are in fact supposed to be lit up so I've got some investigating to do.
Haha yeah I didn't have any illumination either before I swapped mine over to LEDs. My guess would be that all of your bulbs are burned out like mine were. Thanks for watching!
I have the OEM back window arms on my 2002. They do that same thing where it pushes out when you close the lever all the way. If I remember correctly, you have to tighten a screw at precisely the right pivot point to get it to not rock back. And, if you don’t tighten it, it will slip.
Huh that's good to know, I'll have to check that out. Thanks for watching!
Respect from 3rd gen Tundra❤
Thanks for watching!
If you haven't replaced them yet I highly recommend replacing out the screw mounts for the cowl. Mine were leaking into the cab badly. A cheap replacement with OEM parts to stop a very serious and annoying leak! Had to do it on mine and it hasn't leaked since! Good video and some of these upgrades mentioned here I did on my truck and it's made it so much nicer like the LED's and rear windows.
Hmm I haven't looked into that at all, but I definitely will now. Thanks for the heads up, and thanks for watching!
What about the cowl? Just install new screws you're saying? Or why was it leaking to begin with?
love this video
Thanks for watching!
Really nice truck :)
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching
Sal great recap video. I did a lot of your suggestions already and just did the headlights. If anyone has fog light issues and they have a 2003 Tundra SR5 with with fog light issues let me know I have the solution.
Awesome, glad to hear you've got a solution for your fog light issues. Thanks for watching!
@donavonlewis1039 Hey I have a 2003 Tundra SR5 and was thinking about upgrading the headlights and fog lights to LED. Can you tell me what the issues I might have and how you overcame them? Thanks!
Dude! I have a 2001 first gen Tundra that I always thought looked "pretty good" for its age. Shyte your Tundra makes mine look like a total POS! Wow ! Props to you for keeping your old truck looking so good! Oh yeah... thanks for the video. Lot's of great ideas. Hope you'll do a video soon on how to replace the stereo speakers in the front doors. Thanks again!
I actually did do a video on the front speakers! But I appreciate it, and thanks for watching!
ruclips.net/video/KXsS2CDWLsA/видео.html
What are you looking to do exactly? I'm in the middle of doing it myself now
@@bricebowlin8834 Just how to get the panels off the doors so you can access the speakers. What special tools are needed to get the panels off. Any special electrical connectors needed to plug the speakers into the existing wiring. I have manual windows, so need help getting the window cranks off the door too.
Bro you should upload more love watching you vid!
I appreciate that, I've been busy with life and my day job but I try to get videos out whenever I can. Thanks for watching!
Just for fun, try to gloss black vinyl wrap that chrome on your mirrors and I bet you that'll really modernize the look of your beautiful and clean truck 🙂
I've definitely considered it! Thanks for watching
The guy I bought mine from had done that and also did the headlight. Mistake number one. I can't see crap at night
Led gauge conversion? That’s sound incredible!!
Yeah it made a huge difference! Here's the video I made about it, thanks for watching!
ruclips.net/video/H1MKCgnfCu4/видео.html
I actually like the rake look
Yeah, to each their own! Can't really go wrong tbh. Thanks for watching!
Nice video Sal. I saw your original video on the door sill protectors. Unfortunately not available with Toyota Canada. So shall have to wait til l am back in the US to buy them.
Have you thought of the soft open tailgate mod. Just finished doing it on my 06 DC. I really like it.
Thanks again for the informative video.
Cheers
Ah bummer, I didn't know that was the case. I have definitely considered the soft-open tailgate! I was looking into a couple of options on Amazon, but haven't bought one yet. If I decide to do it, I will obviously be making a video! Thanks for watching
@@JDMDriveway
Good day Sal
I was not able to find a soft close system made for the first generation.
I had found on a Tundra forum a fellow who used a mixture of parts to make it work. With his as a guideline l was able to obtain my goal of a softn open. I can't seem to find away to attach a photo sorry.
Daryl
Great video man. Keep up the good work. Im looking to buy same gen tundra soon. Have you done a video on the timing belt and water pump replacement?
Nope, I did that before I started making RUclips videos. But I couldn't make a better one than the 1A Auto video on it. It's super thorough and it's what I used. I never had any confusion on what to do next or anything. I would highly recommend it. Thanks for watching
I'm interested on that one myself for my '05 four-door
Great video! Thanks for the all the information!! I have a 2005 4WD Double Cab and you have inspired me. Do you have any videos on how to install the 2” leveling kit? Thanks again! 😀
Unfortunately I don't, I'm going to be replacing the struts on my truck soon though, so that video should be pretty helpful. Installing the leveling kit is fairly easy though, just be prepared to use a cutoff wheel to trim the studs on the top hat so that they fit within the spacer. I'm sure there's other videos out there to help too. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much! Looking forward to more informative videos. Btw…I just subscribed to your channel 😁
Love the videos!! Do you have any suggestions on Bed Rail Caps, where to buy or refurbish 2002 Tundra… Thanks
Unfortunately I don't. I've been looking myself because some of my mounting tabs are broken and I want to replace them. Hopefully someone else can chime in if they found a good solution. Thanks for watching!
I’m really enjoying your videos. They’ve been very helpful. The link that you provide for the leveling kit is for a 3 inch lift. Did you lift it 3 inches or 2 inches?
Oh thanks for the heads up, I have a 2 inch leveling kit in my truck! Thanks for watching
Awesome vid...imma get started....just got a 2000 wit 136,000..in 2023
That's awesome man, congrats on the new truck!
I still have my 2000 TRD 4x4 with less than a 100K. Highly Recommended but Expensive Interior Upgrade-> *Toyota Tundra TRD 2002 SEMA Show Leather Package,* Toyota offered it as part of the Ivan Stewart SE trim package in 2002 and maybe 2003. It adds significant bolstering to the front seat bottoms and backs along with two-tone perforated leather, front and back seats. Toyota stopped offering it through the dealer but I was able to order it from the Company that supplied it to Toyota. 1200$ for the package including installation. It is better quality and cheaper than the 'regular factory leather' that was 2000$ as an option when new. It has been in the truck 16 years and still looks great, my truck came with the cloth interior.
Dang that sounds like a nice upgrade. I wonder if they offer a selection for the bench front seat. I may need to look into that, thanks for watching!
Can you share the name of the company you got the leather package from?
You should try a trim restorer to make those black trims really POP it will make the truck look brand new
I've been meaning to do that for years lol. I'll make a video on it soon haha Thanks for watching!
Great Video Sal! Do you think that a 2.5 inch font lift would be ok?
Yeah it would probably be fine, I would keep an eye on your axle boots to monitor for any tears, but as long as they can align it, you should be good to go. With that said, I'm far from a mechanic so you may want another more qualified opinion too haha thanks for watching!
Didn't know about the fj squirters! Love the color of your truck Sal, I have a Thunder Grey 1st gen and see them all the time but rarely see the dark red like yours.
Yeah they're a sweet upgrade, not quite sexy or cool to spend your money on, but you'll appreciate every time you use them haha but yeah there's a couple pretty sweet colors on these trucks, I'm a little biased but I love the dark red on my truck too 😂 thanks for watching!
I got an improvement you can make and it needs to be done on all the first generous minus the ones with chrome fender well flares.
Get a container of black back I believe it's called something of that nature. Anyway it's just like an armor all or something that you spray and rub on all the plastics that fade over time. Top of the front bumper, the back side of your mirrors, bed top rails, rear bumper cover, fender flares.. last several weeks w/ just a couple applications. Makes a hell of a difference in the look of the vehicle!!!
Alternatively you can use a blowtorch and just hit them real lightly and it will bring the color back. Temporarily anyway. Trouble with that fix is, You can only perform it a numbered amount of times before those pieces become brittle...
... Definitely step ahead using the liquid..
Thanks a bunch for the advice. Restoring the trim has been on the to-do list for a while now and I do plan to make a dedicated video about it. Thanks for watching!
That's a clean looking Tundra bro! I wish my 06 looked as good lol.
Haha I appreciate that, just take it little by little!! Thanks for watching
Great vid, I've done the LED and headlight upgrades already!
Sweet, thanks for watching!
Hi Sal. Great videos. I've done several of the upgrades you have recommended. I'm wondering if you have a list of all of the exterior lights that you used? I'm having difficulty finding the correct tail/brake and turn signal leds. I have a 2002 Tundra Limited w/ 195k and still going strong.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!

Hi good morning, first of all, thank you for this video. Very informative. I actually just bought one myself, 06 tundra and same color as yours and this is my very first truck. I was wondering if you can make a video of how to remove deep scratches on the truck and make it shiny like yours. Thank you!
Hey that's awesome man, congrats on the new truck. I made a video about a year ago on how to polish the paint and remove scratches. Depending on how deep they are, some may not come out all the way. But most smaller scratches will come out with some patience and time. Thanks for watching!

@@JDMDriveway thank you so much, I have no idea how I missed this video. lol. this will help me alot making my truck looking good. Thank you for making a ton of videos that I can DIY for my truck's upcoming upgrades.
I took my tailgate off and use rope to secure cargo, it’s great and don’t miss the weight. Only rich people have tailgates😂
To each their own. But did you know that trucks is actually designed to get better gas mileage with the gate on?
@@bricebowlin8834 I did not know this. I was just joking around, but it seems like less weight is always better. The suspension is designed for that weight. I did notice with the leaf springs the rear end seemed to bounce around a lot more over bumps.
I'd be curious to see the difference in MPG from tailgate off and on. Thanks for watching!
I think that you could also freshen up the matte black plastic on your bumpers and on your fender flares. I have heard of two options: Either a matte black spray paint, or a using a heat gun to freshen up the plastic. Proceed carefully with a little testing first, I don't want to be responsible for messing up your truck.
Yep, I've been experimenting here and there with options for freshening up that plastic. Trying to find a good solution so I can make a video for you guys about it. Thanks for watching!
Cris fix has some vids on great results ceramic coating faded plastics. Says will last 2 or 3 yrs with regular washes.
Do you have any videos you could link on how to do the windshield squirter install? That seems like an essential upgrade!
Definitely a good upgrade for sure. I found this video that shows the process. It's really simple though, you pull the hose off of the back side of the nozzle under the hood, then use needle nose pliers to squeeze the sides of the nozzle and push it up and through the hole. Then pop the new one in and reconnect the hose. Thanks for watching!
ruclips.net/video/I6FK80tTgwg/видео.html
Hey, Sal. I've been considering doing heated seat inserts for my tundra. While it's a 100 dollar upgrade and not a 50 dollar one, I think it would be super cool. If I do it before you, I will post it on my Instagram and share it with you.
That's something I hadn't really considered, but now you've got me thinking 😂 if I did it I would probably do it near the end of summer before winter rolls around. Thanks for watching
Oh man. I didn’t know that was an option. If you do the heated seat upgrade will you please make a RUclips video and share it? I don’t have Instagram.
$100 total or per seat?
I'd like to just replace my seats honestly. They were a little worn when I bought it
The window spray is very annoying. I'm glad I wasn't the only one!
Haha yep! Thanks for watching!
awesome, thank you so much for posting this. have you figured out how to stop the cargo light from going on when you open doors?
I haven't really tried to address that to be honest. Thanks for watching though!
To keep the cargo light from going on with open the doors just flip the switch on the inside in the rear to the middle position I think.
Hey man ever thought of plasti dipping any of the chrome ? Would love to see you do a video, I think it’s something I’m gonna do soon but wanna see some more on it
I've considered it, but for now I'm honestly pretty happy with the stock chrome look. To each their own though, and there's no doubt that blacking out the chrome looks pretty good too. Let me know if you end up doing it, and thanks for watching!
For me, the chrome isn’t too over-the-top. It’s classy. I kind of prefer it to the painted bumpers on later models.
If you want to save your money and really fix the headlights I would really recommend a acetone vapor kit it It heats up the acetone and blows it on the headlight and it vanishes all of the fog off of the headlight
Huh I had to look that up, I haven't heard of that before. Thanks for the tip!
I personally tried to 2 inch lift kit (one inch spacer) and was not satisfied. The upper ball joint will hit the spring of the shock due to the suspension being forced to go lower than it does from the factory. If you get larger upper control arms this will be fixed, but put it on stock suspension and you will ruin your ball joints as well as your shocks! It makes a very load clunk when you go on a speed bump as well.
Yeah I've been super conflicted on what to do for my suspension. My shock bushings are completely gone and while I want to do a full upgrade with 5100s and upgraded springs, I really don't do any off-roading to justify the price. A simple 4600 replacement with the same spacers sounds pretty enticing for less than $400 all in. Maybe I'd regret it, but I'm really leaning that way for now
I am looking at doing this same thing for my sons 2006 Tundra but the above scares me, so what is the $400 all in fix?
@@JDMDriveway
I bought my son a 2006 Tundra. Can you make a video on maintenance items you suggest proactively replacing or anything you suggest keeping an eye on?
That's a video I've been thinking about making, more so talking about the things that have broken on my truck. Quick hitters though would be timing belt, lower ball joints, and keeping an eye on the frame rust because that can get kinda cancerous on these trucks. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the videos! Love the look of the 1st Gen.
I’ve been looking around, do you think laying $20K for a low mileage (
Some people will say that that's too much money, but honestly I think that's what the market is, especially for a really clean, lower mile truck. And I consider it an investment because these will just keep on running and I don't really see them losing too much value. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMDrivewaybought mine 2006 tundra. 85k miles, one owner. 34 maintenance items on Carfax. Super clean. Timing belt done. All for $15.9k
I would add lower ball joints. These are common failure points in these trucks. I would change them just before 100k miles
Good point. I was mainly focusing on aftermarket upgrades/swaps but that is one of the most critical maintenance items for sure. Thanks for watching!
Hell yeah I love my 2006 tundra homie !!! 😎💯
They're great trucks!! Thanks for watching

Is the bed liner a drop in type or sprayed? Looks good.
It's a spray in type and has been holding up decently well. Loading heavier things back there has scratched it up in a few spots but overall it's been good. Thanks for watching
So the leveling kit is just for the front? To make them even with the back? A nd what wheel size is that and tire size? Different offset than original?
Yep, the leveling kit is just for the front. From the factory, the back is a little bit taller than the front so that when you're towing, the truck sits flat. The wheels and tires are Vision Manx 16x8 +0 and 265/75r16. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

I found the power outlets in the cab were too tight for most power adapters, and the oulet itself did not feel secure in the lower dash. It wiggled when plugging in anything. I bought a two pack of marine grade outlets, one power outlet, and one usb on Amazon. Now I can charge my phone without adapter/inverter, the sockets are more secure in the plastic dash, and the std outlet is not so tight. $12 upgrade and only required a little low speed dremmeling of the dash to fit the new parts.
Nice, glad to hear it. Always a good feeling when you customize something to make it work better for you. Thanks for watching
Did you have any problems with the headlight bulbs? I heard you have to put in a resistor of some kind.
The CO Light ones that I installed come with an in-line resistor and I haven't had any issues. Other options don't come with the resistor and they can lead to weird problems with your fog lights and high beams which is why you need to add a resistor. Thanks for watching!
Your tundra looks great with those spacers. What tire size do you have?
They are a 2" leveling spacer on top of the front struts. Thanks for watching!
@@JDMDrivewayI wasn’t specific haha. What tire size?
Haha all good they're 265/75 r16
Thanks.
Good info dude.

Nice video! What happened with the trd grill?
Right lol
I would buy the TRD grill from him if he doesn’t want it 😂
I was really wishy washy on if I liked it on the truck or not and I opted to take it off. I think for now I'm gonna leave the OEM grille on. I don't plan on selling it just yet, but if I decide to, I'll make sure it goes to a good home 👍🏼 thanks for watching!
Don’t sell, Sal. We need your upgrade and mod videos.
I’ve heard of nightmare scenarios, trying to compress the springs in order to get the spacers to fit. Did you not encounter any of that? Thank you.
Funny you should ask that, I have a video going up tomorrow of me installing Bilstein 4600 shocks with these same spacers on top. To answer your question though, I haven't run into that issue. These spacers just sit on top of your shocks so you don't need to compress your springs any more than you would stock. Re-installing them on the truck is a bit tougher because you're adding a lift, but if you disconnect your LBJ it frees up a lot of play and you can mount them no problem. Definitely check out the video going up tomorrow to see what I'm talking about though. Thanks for watching!
Have you done a replacement LED upgrade for the truck bed light / backup lights?
I have done LED reverse lights and I installed an LED 3rd brake light, but the bed light bulbs in there are still halogen. I probably won't end up swapping those out though. Thanks for watching!

3rd brake light: www.ebay.com/itm/311331093591
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback, I'lll order those@@JDMDriveway
There's a light under dash drivers side for entry light
Yup, I replaced that one. I didn't even know it was there lol thanks for watching
Just bought an 02 and already planning on doing the rear window latch arm upgrade, fj cruiser washer squirters, and restoring the headlights. Thinking about installing a stubby radio antenna along with a double din apple carplay/backup camera setup. Anyone got any recommendations for them?
Awesome, congrats on the new truck. I've considered a stubby antenna but I haven't pulled the trigger so I can't recommend one yet. For the CarPlay/backup camera, I really like my solution of the Atoto F7 XE and the Natika camera from Amazon. I have a video here about it. Hope it helps, and thanks for watching!

Any idea where someone can get those TRD fender flares? Even replicas would be okay. I’ve been searching for a while now.
I'm not too sure, my truck came with these stock. I've seen replicas on eBay, but I can't speak to the quality of them because I've never seen it in person. Thanks for watching
Hey, do you recommend the v6 1st gen tundras
Unfortunately I have no experience with the V6 Tundras so I can't speak to them at all. I'd love to test drive one at some point just to see! Thanks for watching
I’m thinking about adding the kn&n highflow intake system using the oem air box. What you think? Neh or yea?
I'm not sure tbh. I don't know what kind of power gains you would expect to see from it, and I think the other main benefit would be induction noise on acceleration. I personally don't plan to do it myself, but I also have my Nissan which I consider my fun car to make the cool noises haha up to you though! Thanks for watching
I have the K&N cold air intake on my 2003 Limited V8 4x4 Tundra. I put it in when it was 2 months old back in late 2003 after I bought the truck new from the Toyota dealer I worked for while I was in school. I have the original filter and box it like new condition stored away as a back up, just in case. The K&N system does change the air quality and freedom of flow in the engine and gives it a slight almost turbo like whistle when you push the truck a bit. I felt it helped with the 6,500 lb horse trailer I towed at the time and also gives a bit of power gain during regular driving, and harder accerations. It only helps the gas mileage if you keep the filter clean, every 25-30k (more often if you offroad a lot) like clockwork, though these days they actually say longer between cleaning and re-oiling (I stick with 30k max). Also don't put on the oil too heavy, or you restrict the air flow. The computer may take a few days to fully adjust to give you max performance on this upgrade. My first filter and cold intake system lasted until last year when I noticed the "million mile filter" was getting worn patches. Since I only have 150k on the truck I called K&N and they sent me a replacement. I got a really helpful person on the phone and she sent me nearly the whole system when I told her the sensor holder on the top intake feeding into the throttle body was coming loose. The only original peice now is the heat shield which only has a tiny bit of rust, so I'll repaint it this year. I also needed a new heat shield gasket, but the second person I talked to there wasn't as helpful, so I had to buy that part, but to have a whole new system, it was worth the $12. I cleaned my throttle body and the entire engine while I was in there and it looks great 🤩, reminds me of when we were both shiny and new in this world just barely getting started on life's adventure. Since we are still both running strong, many adventures on and off road to look forward to 😊💖🙋♀️ God bless.
@@FreedomLovinLady thank you 🙏
Just replace the headlights when they yellow. Figure in the difference of spending on the kit and elbow grease of trying to bring back the dead. New looks better.
I totally agree, I was just trying to offer a budget solution for someone who doesn't want to buy a set of new headlights. Thanks for watching!
Best way to remove glue from old door sill protectors? Thank you
I'd say probably just some goo-gone and maybe some heat. I'd just be careful not to scratch it up too bad. Thanks for watching!
Hey my tundra has an issue with sucking in water when I go mudding is a snorkel my only option or is there a better fix the puddle only has to be like a foot and a half deep
I'm not sure, sorry. I'd assume that our trucks could drive through more than 1 1/2 ft of water, but as long as it reaches the intake box you'll be sucking up water. So maybe a snorkel is your best option if it happens super often. Thanks for watching!
same exact truck just an sr5 but my radio antenna base is wiggly. any tips?
Mine is wiggly too. I think there's a way to tighten it, but I haven't played around with it too much. I'll make a video if I address it at some point. Thanks for watching!
How much did your mpg’s drop by when adding them?
Not a ton, probably 1-2 mpgs all around. They were probably most affected by my new exhaust because I was giving it more gas everywhere! Haha thanks for watching
where did u get the fenders from that match the front bumper?
They came on the truck and were a factory option. I'd recommend trying your local junkyard and seeing if they have any for cheap. Thanks for watching!
Is it worth 2 inch level kit and 33s on a RWD 1st gen? I’m thinking of trading in or selling for a 1st gen 4Wd then putting money into it
I mean its hard to say, mostly depending on where you live. Up north the 4wd trucks will probably hold their value more, but down south a 2wd truck has less components that could break or need service (front diff and axles), so that might be more desirable. I think people get caught up on "4wd or bust" (at least I did), but in reality I don't do any offroading and 2wd would be plenty fine for my use case. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Honestly I hate the new wheels ,I’m more of a factory guy the 16’s are a lot better but that’s me ! Other than that good looking truck and upgrade ideas ..
Hey, to each their own! The factory wheels look great on these trucks as well! Thanks for watching
I can't seem to find any information on the factory tailgate bushings. Do you have a factory part number for those? Toyota recently changed their parts website and I feel like it was the upgrade from windows 7 to 10, useless.
Lol yeah their website isn't the greatest for finding parts. The stock bushings are actually riveted into the tailgate, so as far as I know, I don't think that you can buy them individually from Toyota. That's why Ryan decided to design a solution. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
@@JDMDriveway Thanks for the clarification, it does appear they don't sell them separate .
