- I present to you a video essay about Extreme Sludge Metal! A mini subgenre of metal that relies on incorporating the outright heavy nature of doom, the misanthropic hardcore wallop of traditional sludge, and something else a lot more sinister and evil from various extreme metal influences. In this video, I make the case for proto bands of the genre, the Godfather of this monolithic entity, and 5 standout bands that have epitomized the sounds of extreme sludge. Come get an education of the most heavy variety and become well versed in a new bullshit genre of our favorite music I am calling “Extreme Sludge”!
I don’t own any of the music used in the video; all credit goes to Thou! Below are the bands that I discussed in this video, I encourage you to check them out!
Grief: Grief - Come To Grief (Full Album) 1994 HQ
Dragged Into Sunlight: Boiled Angel
Lord Mantis: lordmantis.bandcamp.com/music
Indian: indiandoom.bandcamp.com/album...

Thanks for watching! Let me know what other bands I missed from this Metal mini-genre below! Хобби
Been listening to Grief,Come to Grief,Ramesses and Negative Reaction lately. Moss is another great cavernous doom band I love.
Grief a total gem you have
Seriously, the rest of their early discography is right up there too! I just don't know where to purchase yet 😕. Thanks for watching🍻
**slaps roof of Scorn** this bad boy can fit so much misanthropy and hatred inside.
Great video Logan! That new Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean is so damn good. Glad you mentioned it. Usnea and Fister are a couple more that come to mind for this micro-genre.
There's only one Primitive Man when it comes to getting all your hatred and self-loathing needs! Definitely agreed on Usnea and Fister, and you're reminding me that I need to give Usnea's latest another spin. Also, man I wish it was easier to find Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean stuff to purchase 🤷♂. Thanks for watching Jake 🍻
Great call on Fister...I have enjoyed all their music. Hoping Bronsonic will get a reissue one of these days. Have you heard their covers album Decade of Depression? The do a killer rendition of Danzig's How the Gods Kill. I saw them live a few weeks ago and they closed the show with For Whom The Bell Tolls played at about 1/4 speed!
@@brianarkham1789 Shit that covers album sounds killer; definitely checking it out!
Some great shit mentioned here mate, Grief, Dragged Into Sunlight, Infian, Primitive Man, all killer stuff. Great video.
Appreciate it Dave! I love this stuff for sure and just realized that Iron Monkey could be included here. Thanks for watching, cheers 🍻
@@metalandbeersnob Iron Monkey are fucking great. Some of the most demented vocapls ever R.I.P Johnny Morrow.
Mistress were fuckin' killer too.
Love the Hell mention. That dude is a master of oppression through sludge.
Dude I've really only listened to his most recent album from 2017, but some of the vocals in it are absolutely crazy and inhuman. They sound like Rodan from Godzilla or something!
love your videos man
Appreciate the nice words man and thanks for watching 🍻
As someone who is wanting to start a band videos like these are very helpful to me as a creative outlet for ideas and different styles that I would love to implement as I have a huge amount of influences
Appreciate you watching and for the comment! Definitely curious to find out what kind of band you'll create. What kind of influences are you working with currently?
You basically described Uncross. I call us crusty death sludge. Grief is a huge inspiration on us. Good video that breaks down some cool bands in this scene.
Dude I meant to reach out to you after your Metullurgy stream where you were describing the Uncross sound! It’s definitely right up my alley. Thanks for watching Bill 🍻
clipping bit of original before talking about them would make huge diference
Duly noted; always taking tips. Thanks for watching 🍻
Nice topic Logan! I've only checked out a few bands in this style. Harsh stuff for sure!
Thanks for watching Alan! It’s a unique style in my mind and one that scratches a certain itch. I’d recommend these bands for sure, but I’d say you’d have to be in a certain toxic mood to properly enjoy them 🤷♂️
@@metalandbeersnob Agreed. I figured out quickly that being in the right mood is pretty important for this style. Had to re-visit PRIMITIVE MAN a couple of times for it to click, and a lot of it was being in the right mood for it.
@@letstalkmetal yep that sounds right for most of these bands; the only one more intense than Primitive Man is probably Indian imo. You can’t go wrong with the album I talked about or Guiltless!
I fee like you're mainly just describing sludge (sludge doom, not to be confused with this amorphous term, "sludge metal", where people say, "Mastodon! Baroness! Isis!", LOL). But regardless, I wouldn't include Dystopia (crust punk, albeit pretty metallic crust punk - but not slow at all) or Dragged into Sunlight. Sick bands, though.
Grief is orthodox sludge to me, but definitely one of the greats. The album Dismal is their sickest. If you dig Grief, I would certainly check out Noothgrush (one of the best ever), Moloch and Meth Drinker - they're all right in line with that.
Eyehategod will always be the GOAT.
Sludge doom could easily capture everything; I just felt that some of these bands I mentioned go a step further down the extreme metal rabbit hole (Indian, Lord Mantis, and Primitive Man especially) and deserved a new more hyperbolic title. Definitely with you on Eyehategod, an influential favorite of mine. Thanks for watching and for the well thought out comment. Cheers 🍻
Edit: you’re comment is also gonna make me check out Moloch and Meth Drinker (one hell of a name). Thanks man!
Man remember we dont suffer a sickness , we are blessed to have it, blessed are the sick
Well said my friend! Thanks for watching 🍻
Asbestos Death, Noothgrush, Sin Of Angels, Drip, Carol Ann, Brainoil, Upsidedown Cross, Agents Of Satan, and moooooooorrrreeee
Nice comment! I got some new stuff to check out: Sin of Angels, Upside Down Cross, Agents of Satan. Thanks for watching 🍻
I've never heard it described as death sludge but that is pretty fitting actually. The noise element that some of these newer bands are utilizing is a cool addition to an already unnerving sound. To me Thou also had a bit of a blackened edge to them as well. Heathen is unmatched though! Good call on Body Void. Their new album incorporates a lot of harsh noise/electronics that adds so much tension to the music.
I stole the death sludge term from Primitive Man. I think I stand behind the moniker of Extreme Sludge the most as there really are a lot of other elements at play with these bands than just death metal, like black metal with Thou! Body Void are visceral and I'm still digesting their newest one, it's dense (a compliment 👍)
@@metalandbeersnob Yeah Primitive man coined the term! You shoulddefinetly check out Admiral Angry and Black Sheep Wall if you haven't already! Some of the most punishing death sludge/ sludgecore out there!
@@punkstudios9955 I know and dig a couple of Black Sheep Wall’s albums; great stuff that definitely fits in this conversation. I don’t know the other band though, will be checking them out! Thanks for watching and the comment 🍻
@@metalandbeersnob Hell yeah man Im sure you'll dig them! Also the Abominable Iron Sloth! Their debut album is so brutal!
what you discribe sounds a lot like toadliquor check them out if you havent
Thanks for the recommendation; they look right up my alley. The the Hortator’s Lament is on my to listen list
Editing to report that I am really liking their new album Back in the Hole; well timed comment!
I am imagining what your beer tastes like
Part of the purpose of these videos is to share the beer! Wake Up Dead is a good one, thanks for watching 🍻
