      Some russian troll commented on the Sotchi games opening being the best. I just laughed and told him to see a few before he opens his mouth again. Sydney put on a show, a real show. China put on a show for the world. Tokyo in absence of people put on a show. Athens put on one heck of a show. Even most of the time boring UK put on a show for once. Russia had 2 people talking in russian and barely any other landuage for the first 30 minutes. Then you got some girl chasing a kite. That was pretty much it.

    I was at that Opening Ceremony..... It was a great night and I had a lot of fun...... My favourite moment was the countdown from 10 to 0 when Steven Jeffrey was on his horse name Amo and ran or galloped into the middle of the stadium with his whip to open or start the games...... The reason, is that, he was the 1st person in the world to open or start the games for the new millennium (2000) which was very special and I will remember that forever..... I still see this many times on this RUclips.

Following behind was a French farmer struggling along with a mule and cart coming into drop produce into the town, the Diggers erupted in cheers for him and helped him along like it was the King!

    I was there that night, sitting in the open grandstand opposite the stage. The best live experience I ever had. I will never forget that single rider entering the huge stadium alone and whipping things off. More than 100.000 people held their breath that all would go well. The "Nature" segment at 35.00 mins. was so beautiful, there was not a dry eye in the house. Little Nikki Webster charmed the world, Tina Arena and Vanessa Amorosi sang their heart out (I know, not live), Olivia Newton-John looked like an angel, the Australian Women's Sport Hall of Fame carrying the torch around and through the athletes to Cathy Freeman was a genius move and some unsung hero behind the scenes made that stalled cauldron move again. On the way home the whole bus sang spontaneously "Waltzing Matilda". What a night.

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 4 года назад +10

      I never knew the cauldron stalled until some people from Australia told me a decade later. I thought the music and the singing was just part of the performance as everyone waited and looked at it in awe on the tape-delayed broadcast. I visited the country in 2002 and stood under the cauldron at the location where it still is today.

    • @joshrees1985
      @joshrees1985 4 года назад +7

      Did you know that they had a technical fault with the signal to the cauldron in the computer system controlling the Olympic flame as it rose to the top of the stadium and so they had to reboot it add to that had five minutes of gas left in it when it did finally reach the top they were lucky it happened in time to finish the ceremony otherwise they probably would have had to light it the next day I guess but it looks pretty good where it is today

      @@joshrees1985 I visited the cauldron in November 2002. I'm still amazed how one lights a cauldron when it's underwater. As for the technical fault, they dodged that bullet unlike what happened to the cauldron lighting at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

It's great that we finally get to see many of these ceremonies on here now (hopefully!!)without RUclips blocking them each time. And best of all these shows are being presented in their entirety without anything getting cut or having to listen to annoying broadcasters talking on and on. This is the way NBC needs to televise opening and closing ceremonies from now on. Just let the show happen before our eyes.

      I agree that Sydney 2000 was the best. I missed the opening ceremony but was able to record the closing ceremony and also see most of everything else in between. I believe beach volleyball was played here for the first time in the Olympics. I recall early into it breaking into a game about half way through of the Canadian men playing the American men. We (Canada) were down 14 to 9 but I saw our men win that game 17 to 15. I wish I had a copy of that. One little disappointment for me is how they cut off the end. CBC showed us the fireworks right down to the bridge closeup with the fireworks going back and forth and then finally exploding out of the Olympic rings. Well, I have it on VHS. I lived alone and when it was over I had this awful feeling as if all of my friends had left me. When I watch the closing ceremony and see Slim Dusty start to sing Waltzing Matilda, I get that sad feeling again.

    I had not seen the opening ceremony of Sydney 2000 in detail until now and I must say that the segment representing the 5 continents seemed amazing to me.
    57:39 Africa
    59:20 Asian
    1:00:14 Europe
    1:00:55 America
    1:01:42 Oceania
    1:03:00 This is the moment when we realize that Sidney 2000 gave us more carnival than Rio 2016 itself, although yes, Rio has the most beautiful cauldron of all.

      Yea it’s also my favourite part. Seeing how the different waves of ethnic groups coming in one by one to join together in creating Australia is just beautiful.
      It not only celebrates the world’s diverse cultures as it also highlights the waves of migrants coming to Australia to establish their new home - ultimately turning Australia into a nation of multiculturalism.
      Though I thought green was Oceania and blue was meant to be Europe. Google also support this… so not sure why it was switched in the Sydney ceremony 🤔

Sure 2008 blew us away with technology and 2012 was a showcase in extravagance. But this was just so human and unaffected.

      Trust me, the hope and goodness you remember from your childhood still exists, it's just...you're an adult now. Because you have access to, understanding of and the responsibility to tackle the world's many problems in whatever way you can manage, your perspective has darkened from the burden. This is also why modern generations seem to get depressed and become adults faster: information on world issues are relayed almost instantly to them from every direction imaginable. But that doesn't mean we should all give up and say the hope and goodness we saw in the world as kids does not exist today! Like many things from 20 years ago, it has simply grown in such a way that you might not recognise it unless you looked closely. ❤

    Sydney, New South Wales, in Australia, of course is my home city. The Sydney Olympics in 2000 is indeed an event I will never forget. As long as I live. To watch this special event that happened 23 years ago, it's spectacular to watch. To see Olympic Park go off is something I will never forget. From when Sydney won the bid in 1993 to this time in 2000 - it is just brilliant. To see the world re-unite as it did, it's just brilliant.

      Me too, I live here still. I’ll never forget this. Years later I found myself working in Sydney Olympic Park, the huge grass hill where the 5 ring Olympic symbol was displayed had to be obscured because of international rules. So if you go there now it’s still raised covered by grass, but still visible when nearby! I’m glad,
      It’s on Australia Ave.

    This is the best Olympic ceremony, it's between traditional+classic standard AND modern+advance standard, just a perfect timing and transition, no extreme high technology, just the power of the people, the volunteers. The glitch added more taste and suspense, and the overall output in the cauldron is superb. 🎉 It's a long 4 hours of full and superb Op. ceremony, even in Closing ceremony. Update: still the best opening ceremony after watching Paris 2024.
