I’m not even Australian but I’m so glad for them. Thorpe has been my inspiration for years. Such a humble and talented human being and so the rest of the team!
Ian Thorpe's stroke is the smoothest I've ever seen. It looks like he's going slower than the others, but in reality he's speeding up. A beautiful technique.
It was his strength. I read a story from a trainer who worked with Thorpe back in the day, and the difference was Thorpe's weights sessions. They were absolutely insane
Circa 2000 is the best year and the most unforgettable Olympics in history...Australia excelled in swimming here because of Ian Thorpe, and right on his own homeland. It's just sad that his swimming career didn't last very long, unlike Phelps that enjoyed breaking world records, collected a bunch of gold medals and dominated this most exciting sports in Olympics. It's ok Thorpe, you are still my idol, you and Phelps ! Long live both of you, and God bless...
Had Thorpe raced again Phelps after 2004 Olympics he’d NEVER been beaten by him. And, had Thorpe raced in Rome 2009 now we’d have had 3.35 in 400 and sub-1.40 in 200 free. BUT... Who really cares, when you can still see this UNMATCHED stroke in these videos.
BRUCE ALCORIZA Do you think he still would’ve been as good if he wasn’t allowed allowed to wear that swimsuit like they aren’t today? I reckon he still would, but I’ve argued with people saying that he wouldn’t be

I'm Puerto Rican, Australian 🇵🇷 and I never been so proud of Australia 🤠 and Ian Thorpe,!!! tears came to my eyes the moment we upset the Americans! que Viva Australia........😆😁😁😃

Klim was an all-time Aussie great in my estimation. Thorpe was 6'5" (196 cms)) tall. Looking at the image of the Aussie team at 1.32, it would appear that all 4 Aussies were quite tall.
Thorpies effort in giving the current world champion a start, & running him down, is the best sporting effort I have ever seen, but it was a gr8 team effort.
The US pumps more money into their sports and has a lot more people (sends way more people to every olympics too)... Australia would do more with those resources
To the KNOCKERS...Throughout 1999 and up to and including 2002 Ian Thorpe won every individual contest her entered and not only that but with EVERY one..won them in a NEW world record time. I am not sure if Michael Phelps can claim that.
Having said that Micahel Phelps went on to win 23 Gold Medals, 13 of them individuals. Ian Thorpe won 5 Golds and only 3 Individuals. Those numbers are nothing compared to Phelps. Thorpe is probably ranked somewhere around Alexander Popov standards. For you to say Thorpe is better then Phelps is delirious.
I’m always a little sad when watching Thorpe swim. How much longer would his career had gone for if he didn’t have to deal constantly with the Australian media’s speculation over his sexuality?
I don't think that was the case at all. From my memories of the time, most of us Australians couldn't have cared less whether Ian Thorpe was heterosexual, homosexual or a triple-headed purple alien, and I certainly don't remember it being a big deal in the media - most articles just focussed on his world-beating swimming records. From the interviews I've read with Mr. Thorpe, his struggles with depression began in his early teens, long before he was famous, and were exacerbated by the relentless grind of training and his own internal struggles over his sexuality. In fact the Australian public's reaction to his 'coming out' in 2014 was very positive, and the overall tone of public comment was "So? You're still our Thorpedo and always will be."
It was his own personal issues with depression and such that ended his career early. From what I remember no one could have cared less about who he fancied 😂🤣
Australian women were disqualified from an Olympic final for Petria Thomas jumping in the pool before the Italians finished the race. It always worries me to see teams do that, even though I know the race is over.
You can also do some on Berlin 1936 and Moscow 1980, also Munich 1972 and Mexico 1968. Don’t forget about Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992. I think also on Berlin 1916 and Tokyo 1940. And maybe future Olympics and past Olympics.

You are very kind.
Thorpe's strokes look like there in slow motion and yet his speed is so strong. He looks so at ease. A great example of form.
Also helps when the dude has flippers as feet lol
A swimmer who was swimming next to Thorpe, once said that Thorpe is such a powerful swimmer, that he felt he was stuck in a washing machine.
Ian Thorpe's stroke is the smoothest I've ever seen. It looks like he's going slower than the others, but in reality he's speeding up. A beautiful technique.

Ian is my favorite swimmer of all time!!! Still watching this in 2024! He has the smoothest swim ever, that extended arm is a beauty.
i thought i was the only one
Me too still watching 2024
It was game over after Thorpe swam the first leg. Australia owned them lol
Andy Le pretty good move going with their two best swimmers first. There was no way they would’ve lost after that
@@frasergibson5763 It just the Americans couldn't smash them like guitars haha So funny to see the look in the Americans faces.

yea really
What an Aussie song to go with it, we were legendary back then, we're still good, but nowhere near as good as back then.
SilentHotdog28 Australia is better than ever, so is the opposition.
Agreed
I'd agree with you in terms of the men, but the women are better than ever today.
The current Aussie women team is 🔥🔥🔥 and so much better than the men’s
Ian Thorpe is so smooth and effortless 😩😩😩😩😩😩 Gliding through the water
Thorpes race is pure eye candy for swim fans. Magnificent swimming.
What an incredible era of Australian swimmers after the Perkins era was the Hackett era and after to Popolv era came the Thorpe Era. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
And still going stronger then ever 😊.
The race was for silver and bronze really. No one was catching those Australians.
5:04 AUSTRALIA THAT IS THE BEST DIVE I HAVE EVER SEEN IN OLYMPIC HISTORY.

Sounds like the crowd is yelling "pull, kick!" to remind the swimmers what to do when. :)

Michel Phelps might have the most medals but Ian Thorpe is the best. There's never been anyone like him.
Australian swimmers were a joy to watch. Bravo.
In my time you learn that people have talent and strength that won the day like these guys did. That is why they are winners and I am proud.
The fact they continually broke the world record is ICONIC !!!
So many years later and I still get goosebumps
Dont forget Bill Kirby AM who swam anchor and took them across in world record time. A great guy too.

Awesome Australian swimming team! They just smashed the others...
Franklin Natan like guitars...
I love Ian Thorpe. And I always will.

At the first 100, the American thought he was still in with a chance...Thorpe - turns on legs.
Wouldn't it be funny if one of the umpires slipped into the pool.
On each of the four legs of the race, the Australians consistently moved away from the Americans on the second 100 of each 200.
