The rough linework really makes jjk jjk for me. The chaos of everything that happened in Shibuya, and the chaos that came after, is conveyed really well through Gege's rough art style.
Personally I like the messiness of it, how clean early manga Yuji looks is a little bit uncanny honestly, and I think the roughness fits thematically as well, Shibuya changed the tone and the artstyle, to be much grittier and darker, some faces have been a problem, Gojo looks like a fish in some panels VS Sukuna.

It's a style. The story is messy, the line works messy, the concepts are messy. It's a vibe of its own. As an art teacher I have some comments about it. 1. Speed, when considering that your fans are voracious and absolutely demand material faster than ever before they must consider the rate that they produce artwork and what is acceptable within that time frame. Action; line work in Shonen like manga is all about conveying calm and action. This is obvious at times, but you must remember that lines produce a direction for our eyes to glide on. This is often subconscious on our parts. But the artist has to consider it very deliberately. In the case of JJK it almost seems that they want it to feel cerebral and emotional. If you compare the line work to something like Dragon Ball, you will notice that they are similar but there is less to interpret, this less to imagine. JJK has a very spiritual nature it it, thus the line work and paneling helps enhance that. Have they done a poor job showing us what is happening at times? Yes. Is this natural for a 2D medium like manga and comic books. Of course. Simply look at the ups and downs of Bleach. It's all about the balance of time, effort and conveyance. It's probably one of the coolest styles I have seen in a long time. It takes the traditional and applies a fast and loose punk like feeling. It's the rebellion and everything else is normal.
the story isn't messy its well put together and thought out, the concepts are brilliant and well thought out/fleshed out. Everything has an explanation to my knowledge. Take for example there's an indepth mathmatical explanation for it even though it isn't needed

With all the honesty, I love Gege's artstyle, but... the recent chapters of the Gojo vs Sukuna aftermath, it was beyond readable, like so messy I couldn't even figure out what was going on + In the panels of the most recent chapter, jogoat and sukuna looked like kids, and it doesn't even look natural anymore, both the translation and the art was like roughly absolutely rushed work lol.
I like JJK as much as the next guy, however, I agree to an extent with the criticism about line work. In action and most for the time, the "sketchy" art style flows perfectly, however, I would've loved some detailed and clean artwork when a character is striking a pose, like when Gojo was fighting Sukuna and he got into that martial art wide stance.
another thing is that gege sometimes completely forgets details like how itadori lost one of his fingers and part of his ear and also his scar from mahito moved from the middle of his face to above his eye
I really like Gege's art style, but it's really hard to understand it somethimes when there's to much going on in one panel. One example is the fight betwen Itadori and Choso, specifically the moment they are in the bathroom. When the water starts overflowing everywhere and you see these panels where both are moving really fast, it was hard for me to understand where was everything and how were the punches, due to the rough lines for the water everywhere. It's just in those small moments where the art style is not as good as I wish it was. Great video man, keep up the good work.
The highly edited segments of this video (the manga cutouts) are amazing but it feels like the videos pacing sort of didn't at all do them justice. I rlly loved those edits and slowing down the video to have them appreciated wouldn't hurt
This art is still really good. Sure gege does like to slack with unimportant panels but he delivers really well. The facials and the backgrounds blend in really well.
JJK has completely changed from playing baseball together and listening to Lost in Paradise to having to mentally ease out the pain character d++ths did to us. Gege depictures that absolutely perfectly through his changing style, as the series turned at least 180 degrees. He is a legend. He is strong. He is Gege. And we’ll pull along. (rhyme)
hard disagree to be honest I cant imagine the current jjk story beats and moments under the old style as I think the old style is just way more generic and while he does have some illustrations that look a little wonky as all artists do. art is about telling your story and showing emotions through the tools you have and I think what hes doing now is more effective to that end than his "cleaner" work

As a One piece reader, jujutsu kaisen manga seems understandable to me :D. One piece has very bad action drawings and extremely confusing paneling. Half the time, i can't tell wtf is going on looking at the screen bcz of all the screen "noise"
With the most recent chapter, I think it just hammers home that your point is accurate: JJK art and paneling isn’t bad; Gege is just rushed by Shounen Jump to output bad chapters. Like after this recent chapter with some rough sketches… he still has another chapter next week instead of a break AND has to draw the color page.
They're bits where the messy line work are great to convey movement examples being Jogo furiously screaming along with Mahito and Sukuna hysterical laughing. And then there's times that the messy line work doesn't really have a purpose like the lines that are nearly blacking out the reaction panel from Kashimo. There's also a little bit of inconsistency to how people are drawn.
as an artist i think ive always gravitated towards a messier art style, be it in linework or in colouring. it just conveys this rawness to it that just really scratches my brain

Just because someone doesn't like something or thinks it's 'bad' doesn't make it true. Artists put alot of thought into their work so what youre seeing is their intention and direction which was chosen for a reason.
the messy linework to me fits perfectly with the extreme and intense just chaos in this dark story. To me it looks as if the lines are screaming in pain with the characters as they feel the pain of losing people they love knowing that the chances of them living to see another day is very low, yet they still fight anyway. It fits perfectly, so i have no clue why people be getting mad at it. If anything we should talk about them bulky ah lines being used in chainsaw man. Made it look like complete garbage compared to what we had before.

He's pointing out how the old art style gives Maki more unique facial features instead of having every character having the same features and face shape. You can see it the most when you look at Maki's chin and nose shape in the old art style as you can see the shapes are sharper and very different from the more generic nose and chin that Gege is using for nearly every face he draws (in the new style I mean).
RUclips algorithm is changing it seems, I’m starting to see lesser RUclipsrs more often, and I’m glad I do, these people have insane potential for like 100k subs to 1 million subs, if not then more.
I like the look that it gives characters, but I do find it hard to tell what's happening during fight scenes, so I hope Gege will try to make sure his fights are a bit clearer if he ever has the time. It could just be me though
I didn't read the manga before the Shibuya incident, so I didn't know what it looked like before, but the fights in JJK are sometimes kind of confusing. Not only are some of the panels just really crazy to the point where I'm not always sure what the heck is going on, but also, the power system is just a bit too much for me. I have a hard time remembering all the different details of everyone's abilities. I don't mind it being complex, and I'll probably like it more if I read it again at least once or twice, but it's just sometimes super confusing. I like the art style of JJK, but I wish that it was more clear on what was happening. The anime really helps with this. It makes the fights easier to follow.
The ONLY thing I can say against it is that sometimes you can’t tell where things are in a sense of depth on the screen,but really this just makes it even better because I have to stop and analyse each panel(which is NOT what I do when reading usually since I’m a lazy ass reader)

The only thing I can say about the art style. Is it gets in the way of my reading. I feel like I lose track of what going on with it from time to time due to how the art looks. Sometimes I don't even know what im looking at and I have to go back over what I read every now and then. For example I really loved the shibuya arc that arc was so cool and I read through the whole thing. But a year later I realized that I completely forgot about the artwork because I can't really remember certain events too well. Like everything I remembered goes from Sukuna vs jogo to Yuta killing yuji. Those were the main major events I remembered and funnily enough.
Honestly I love the style , it separates us to the traditional clean line art of other manga, for the messy lines and strokes, it gives me the feeling of being free as an artist to draw what ever I want without the demand of other people saying it looks like chicken scratch😢, Gege art style is very unique, original and with a bit of free style drawing.
I dont mind him releasing his shit monthly if it means seeing sukuna drawn with more then just 1 long continuous line. I cant tell the characters apart anymore, they are all just scribbles on a piece of paper. It has become to messy.
Fun Fact: As Gege is a huge fan of Bleach and Kubo, probably the sound effect in shibuya was inspired by Gin slashing fake karakura with his fake bankai, as the kanji for slashing is used as a panel divisor and also as it was the sword itself cutting things and going in to slash Ichigo, it literally slash throughout the whole page to attack the MC. Kubo is a master os visual storytelling, the manga clears the anime in almost every way until the last arc, where the anime got way better.
I’m writing this before I watch the video ima see how much this changes my opinions I feel like the roughness of the manga make me get lost at times and it just doesn’t feel amazing to read at time cus I just can’t tell wtf is happening Edit: ok so what I’ve learned is that it’s mostly just gege putting too much in paneling making it hard to read and I still personally think that the shibuya art style is my favorite of hers
I appreciate every artist doing what they love in their style but I ain’t gonna lie the reason I never bought a volumen of demon slayer or jujutsu is mainly because the art style 😭💀 I am a sucker for smooth line and many line and weights for movement or noise I guess

2:47 tbh, I agree the paneling for the best mangakas is good, but if you saw ONEs paneling (the creator of the original one punch man story/ opm webcomic and mob pyscho 100) god man, your in for a ride, it’s more perfected then some manga like berserk and stuff.
I mean like he would switch companies like shonen to seinen like for example araki changed to shonen to seinen because his art style is beginning to evolve and storytelling and he needs a lot of time to do the storytelling and making the art style realistic and so he changed to seinen because it takes month for a manga to be release which is good but bad for the people who going to wait for a month for a manga to be release but has a lot of free time for araki to relax and take time till its done and when hes done with the chapter he could relax or do the next chapter for it you get what I mean like he reboot his series but made it be part of it being pt 7 and I like how he develop his story and I like it takes time for a mangaka to finish their art and shonen stress mangaka because it more likely the art are making their arm hurt but seinen jump makes them have time to relax their hand and it may be adult but jjba still have it comedic things in pt 7 to 9 and still love it.

Just because someone doesn't like something or thinks it's 'bad' doesn't make it true. Artists put alot of thought into their work so what youre seeing is their intention and direction which was chosen for a reason.
the messy linework to me fits perfectly with the extreme and intense just chaos in this dark story. To me it looks as if the lines are screaming in pain with the characters as they feel the pain of losing people they love knowing that the chances of them living to see another day is very low, yet they still fight anyway. It fits perfectly, so i have no clue why people be getting mad at it. If anything we should talk about them bulky ah lines being used in chainsaw man. Made it look like complete garbage compared to what we had before.

You didn't understand what he meant
He's pointing out how the old art style gives Maki more unique facial features instead of having every character having the same features and face shape. You can see it the most when you look at Maki's chin and nose shape in the old art style as you can see the shapes are sharper and very different from the more generic nose and chin that Gege is using for nearly every face he draws (in the new style I mean).

i love the artstyle... it makes everything so exciting.
I like the look that it gives characters, but I do find it hard to tell what's happening during fight scenes, so I hope Gege will try to make sure his fights are a bit clearer if he ever has the time. It could just be me though
I didn't read the manga before the Shibuya incident, so I didn't know what it looked like before, but the fights in JJK are sometimes kind of confusing. Not only are some of the panels just really crazy to the point where I'm not always sure what the heck is going on, but also, the power system is just a bit too much for me. I have a hard time remembering all the different details of everyone's abilities. I don't mind it being complex, and I'll probably like it more if I read it again at least once or twice, but it's just sometimes super confusing. I like the art style of JJK, but I wish that it was more clear on what was happening. The anime really helps with this. It makes the fights easier to follow.
The ONLY thing I can say against it is that sometimes you can’t tell where things are in a sense of depth on the screen,but really this just makes it even better because I have to stop and analyse each panel(which is NOT what I do when reading usually since I’m a lazy ass reader)

The messy lining just makes it feel more hand drawn and give a sense of action to it. Personally i think it fits the story more.
The only thing I can say about the art style. Is it gets in the way of my reading. I feel like I lose track of what going on with it from time to time due to how the art looks. Sometimes I don't even know what im looking at and I have to go back over what I read every now and then. For example I really loved the shibuya arc that arc was so cool and I read through the whole thing. But a year later I realized that I completely forgot about the artwork because I can't really remember certain events too well. Like everything I remembered goes from Sukuna vs jogo to Yuta killing yuji. Those were the main major events I remembered and funnily enough.
Honestly I love the style , it separates us to the traditional clean line art of other manga, for the messy lines and strokes, it gives me the feeling of being free as an artist to draw what ever I want without the demand of other people saying it looks like chicken scratch😢, Gege art style is very unique, original and with a bit of free style drawing.

Fun Fact: As Gege is a huge fan of Bleach and Kubo, probably the sound effect in shibuya was inspired by Gin slashing fake karakura with his fake bankai, as the kanji for slashing is used as a panel divisor and also as it was the sword itself cutting things and going in to slash Ichigo, it literally slash throughout the whole page to attack the MC.
Kubo is a master os visual storytelling, the manga clears the anime in almost every way until the last arc, where the anime got way better.
As an average artist, messy sketch is not a big deal for us but sometimes we fix it😅
Csm is honestly a way bigger issue half the time in the newest chapters i can hardly tell wtf is going on in the fight theres just so much going on

I actually prefer the chunkier faces, it shows the shift in mood among the manga in general
