I love how detailed your videos are. Providing us with all the necessary information we need to make sound decisions when it comes to choosing our audio gear. Much love from Fiji bro.
For a beginner, I’ll be honest, I’d recommend going with something bigger. I really struggled scaling my audio interface to record live performances and play live with my computer. If you get a device with 2 stereo outputs (I went with the Scarlett 2i4), you can have seperate outputs going to your ears, which means the world! I really regret going with my original audio interface, because I only used it for about 6 months before scaling up. I couldn’t be happier with my scarlett too! The latency is super low and it’s super useful. It’s worth thinking that if you ever think you’ll want to play live, you’re gonna need 2 stereo outputs.
Can you recommend me a specific Interface then? I want to record vocals so singing, lead and harmonies. Also in the future guitar if I ever get around to learn it😅 I want to spend my money wisely so give me your tips
Thank you so much for the video! It made me chose the Steinberg UR12 and I was so lucky to chance upon a UR242(display set) for usd 65. PS: I was actually shocked for a moment that the single input resulted in a left-only channel until I realize that it's the PC that have been auto-setting the mono channel to stereo all these times... Sometimes you only find out the truth when he start dealing with it more.
You did it again! I currently use my iRig keys IO 25 for my interface and I love the build of the M Audio 2x2 and went on the hunt for the 2x2m with the midi IO as well. The knob is everything!
Most the 2 channel audio interfaces seem to be too much of a compromise, so yes I highly recommend spending a little bit more to get the next level (or two) up. I researched a while and kept coming back to the Behringer UMC404HD because it was cheap and feature-ful. For $135 street price, you get 192KHz, 24 bit, 4 mic/instrument/line inputs with better gain (and pad button to cut gain for hot inputs) than the cheaper Behringer models, proper headphone in/mix monitoring, send channels (for external processors), midi in/out, 4 outputs (2 main, 2 alternate - using XLR, TRS, and/or RCA). It works on PC/Mac/iOS. It will run off USB power, but with iOS, you'll want to use the AC adapter (included). It has all the pro features of bigger units, for not much more $$. A good choice for me at least.
@@junpreet9261 If you know for sure all you need is 2 channels, the UMC202HD is great - same quality as the UMC404HD. But if you are new to doing home recording and think you'll only need 2 channels, more likely you will quickly find the UMC202HD is limiting, but 4 channels on the UMC404HD isn't so much. I would only buy a 202 because I need a small cheap 2 channel device. Otherwise I would suggest the 404 any day over the 202. The UMC202HD is about 1/2 the price of the 404 now (about $90 for the 202 vs. $170 for the 404). But as they say, buy what you can afford. The only down side about the 404 vs. the 202 is 2x the size and 2x the price. Regarding 2 vs. 4 channels. Why does this matter? If you want to record 2 mono instruments (guitar and a microphone, or 2 microphones for a pod cast), 2 channels is fine. If you want to record 2 stereo instruments (a pair of synths) or more than 2 mono instruments, you will need the 404. I recently upgraded to a UMC1820 which is effectively like the UMC404HD but with 8 channels. No HD, though which means no 192KHz. Very few people need 96KHz or 192KHz - if you don't know why you care, then you don't need it - 44.1Hz or 48Hz is perfectly fine. My other upgrade was to buy a Presonus StudioLive 32R (rack mount 32 channel in/out mixer which also works as a 32 channel audio interface). I use the UMC1820 for my iPad, and the StudioLive 32R for my Mac. All my synths (up to 16 stereo synths) can connect to the 32R at once, no swapping cables or even using a patch bay. Yes, expensive and perhaps overkill, but I mention this as an example that if you buy lots of stuff that you want connected all the time, you can never have enough ports. BTW, the UMC1820 is about $280 right now. It has basically 8 ins/outs but expandable to 16 ins/outs using ADAT connected to something like a Behringer ADA8200 ($220). The UMC202HD and UMC404HD do not have ADAT expandability, but the UMC1820 does, which helps future proof it a little bit. So, I go back to my original comment that for the price, the UMC404HD with 4 in/outs might be just enough to make the difference but still cheap enough to not break the bank. Figure out your budget and buy the most ports you can afford, unless, again, you know for sure you only need 2 ins/outs.
For $80 you can jump to the Behringer UMC202HD which blows pretty much everything under $250 away. So, what you say about the UMC22 may be true, it could negatively impact the way the rest of the line is viewed. UMC22 = Ultra Budget / UMC202HD & 204HD = Budget that punches way above their weight IMO and the opinion of many others

Every vid I watched was 15 mins long and useless. Then I was like "Hey, Sanjay will definitely have a video for that. And besides, he always gets to the point easily." And here I am. Thx so much

Thank you so much Sanjay! I think I’ll go with the native m1 to pair with my native instruments I already have 😁
Try out the UMC204HD - and i bet you will be up for a surprise. Considering the competition. They have stepped up their game. (i mean, look at the X-touch ONE, and so on... )
I never understand why reviewers always pick the cheapest UMC in this kind of comparison videos. The 202hd is still under 100 and more similar to the typical "under 100" audio interface, without most of the cons of the umc22 that are normally pointed. Anyway, great video as always Sanjay ;)
The not-the-cheapest Behringer is still a good choice. I recently got a UMC-404HD for recording and streaming the audio at church, and couldn't be happier.
I recently asked about Audient id14 and id22 vs my Eleven Rack and I got a reply about Focusrite Clarett and trying to get me to buy one. I've had a Focusrite and I would never touch them again. And imo a poor company to bring out the 6i6 gen1 then find they can't fix it any issues so gen 2 came out. I will never forgive them for that bs.
i had the M-Audio for a while, for the first two years it worked fairly decently, but the pre-amp had a very edgy tone to it. The gain knob stopped working and the signal became so rough in the High Mids, I’d suggest going with a scarlet or paying more for a better interface🙏
thank you so much for this. I'd buy the M-Audio if i didn't read this. for the cheapest price, durability, and quality, I think the scarlett solo is the safest choice to pick.
Thanks a lot!!! i have an OLD M-Audio Fast Track that i have been using for over 13 years, and i finally am committing to upgrading, and was unsure of which to go with. Between this video and another one you produced, i think i have it narrowed down. So thank you!!
I do have this issue with Focusrite. The first nob, channel, sound odd, and I can only get mono sound out of my headphones. I do have the Behringer also, and I didn’t have the issue with it.
Very good information Sanjay, but I would HIGHLY recommend to your viewers to spend the few more dollars and make sure you get an interface with that direct monitoring knob as this is a MUST HAVE for overdubbing vocals and guitars and stuff against what's already recorded in the computer DAW tracks. You MUST have this for the best workflow experience IMHO. Having to go into the DAW to do this every time becomes tedious quickly.
You can tell that this guy really cares about what he talks about and is very knowledgeable in this field. He has a passion for it! I would definitely trust his judgement!
I'm pretty sure the M-Audio was quiet with your Beyerdynamics because you're supposed to use at least a headphone amp with them to give them the juice they really need at that impedance.
I don't understand why you didn't test the UMCxxxHD models from Behringer instead of the cheapest model you could fine. The HD models should all be below $100, have different chips and offer a lot of extras.
That is an excellent question. I had to make a choice when choosing which Behringer interface to buy. These seven interfaces are the entry-level interfaces from each of the companies. Behringer positioned the UMC22 to compete with the Focusrite Scarlett Solo and others at that entry point. It's to Behringer's benefit that they can sell their entry-level interface at a much lower price than the competition. Behringer positions itself to "sell comparable products at lower prices" rather than to "deliver more features/quality at the same price point as the competition." You'll see that they make that strategy choice with all their products. So the UMC22 is Behringer's answer to the Scarlett Solo. But thanks for the really good question!
Sanjay C I don’t think that was the best decision. I want to know what’s the best purchase for equivalent budget. Behringer have addressed comments on their sound quality by incorporating Midas pre-amps in their newer models, still within $100. When selecting my interface, I really need to know what I can get and what my trade-offs are for the same budget, not how to shave off a few $. I really hope you consider doing an update, comparing the UMCxxxHD features and sound quality against similar price interfaces from Focusrite and the other manufacturers.
@@stephaneenglish4661 hi, you can look into these type of comparison here ruclips.net/video/tUXIsOg1Oi0/видео.html and the rest of the channel ruclips.net/user/JayKayRausevideos is more focused on scientific mesurement of the audios INs and OUT of the audio interface on the market to compare and make your choice As the argument started, the Behringer 404HD goes for around 100-115€ in Europe so the same as Focusrite solo 3rd gen but the I/O is of the range above (4 in with preamp, 4 in insert, 4 out, and MIDI in+out) so on the base spec the Behringer totaly blow the competition. I would have like it in the video but it would have started a messier comparison where bang for the buck it wins but Sanjay may not wanted to crown it the winner.

Excellent video, especially the vocal and guitar comparisons at the end. The differences really stand out. I've always used Steinbergs and it's nice to see they stack up well in comparison to the others. M-Audio was also a bit of a shock in a good way, very clear sounding- would probably place that as a close second to the UR 12. While I liked liked the sound of the NI Komplete (you described the colouring of the sound very well), I found it to have a lack of note separation when listening to the chords. Am I just hearing things or does anyone else agree?

I appreciate your fantastic reviews on all these different gears! However, I do have one question regarding the M-Audio interface. Is there a difference between the AIR 192 | 4 and the 192 | 6 or is it just a newer version?

The umc202 is typically around $120 so it wouldnt be on this list. You have the UM2 which is their lowest end interface around $50, then this one is the UMC22 which is around $70
@@grafforlock The Behringer stuff go on sale pretty often, so you can get it for 80 to 90 though marked 120, like you get 22 for 60 though marked 70. So marked price wise, you are correct, but for all practical purposes 202 is below 100 in most regions, most of the time.

Good advice. Thanks for sharing, Lachlan! :-)
You're welcome. Yes, you will discover the best/right way to use the interface as you practice with it. Glad I could help. Good luck!
I also have the UR-12 from Steinberg. No complaints so far.

404hd or 204hd??

So go for the umc202hd? For vocals

Hey Garry, You can This Focusrite Interface 👉 amzn.to/3eK3TVj
I never understand why reviewers always pick the cheapest UMC in this kind of comparison videos. The 202hd is still under 100 and more similar to the typical "under 100" audio interface, without most of the cons of the umc22 that are normally pointed.
Anyway, great video as always Sanjay ;)
Even 204 is below 100... It has more features than focusrite that costs 200. They say focusrite sounds better tho
The not-the-cheapest Behringer is still a good choice. I recently got a UMC-404HD for recording and streaming the audio at church, and couldn't be happier.
Excellent video, I love that there are subtitles because I don't really speak English much
New sub!!!
Very good video man! Well laid out and very organized! You made my researching for a budget interface much easier. Thank you! Cheers!

Hey Sanjay! How did the Komplete Audio interface do with your Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro’s?
focusright audio sounds "yuk"
hint on future guitar tests..use a looper so it's the same signal sent
Great idea @ the looper!
@@jamielofts tascam or behringer for me.
@@jamielofts I'm doing a review of all these sounds cards soon :-)
i had the M-Audio for a while, for the first two years it worked fairly decently, but the pre-amp had a very edgy tone to it.
Thanks! From the little bit of music and voice at the end, the NI, Steinberg and Focusrite definitely sounded the best (to my ears)

So which one you recommend?
Woaw
And the Focusrite Solo 2i2 had some Soundbugs on Discord. Which are not really fixable right now. :/ I had the problem and some people too.
Totally agreed. Thanks for adding that advice! 👍🏼 what are you using now?

@@SanjayC Behringer U-Phoria UMC202/4HD
And MIDAS preamps.
It would have been the most compareable, reasonable, and best, choice.
@@stephaneenglish4661 hi, you can look into these type of comparison here ruclips.net/video/tUXIsOg1Oi0/видео.html
and the rest of the channel ruclips.net/user/JayKayRausevideos is more focused on scientific mesurement of the audios INs and OUT of the audio interface on the market to compare and make your choice
As the argument started, the Behringer 404HD goes for around 100-115€ in Europe so the same as Focusrite solo 3rd gen but the I/O is of the range above (4 in with preamp, 4 in insert, 4 out, and MIDI in+out) so on the base spec the Behringer totaly blow the competition.

You should have searched up the Behringer UMC 202,that would be on a similar level, UM 22 is just much cheap and not as good.
