Years later, I keep finding myself circling back to your older videos. Really digging the new stuff, too (Formula 1, Maddie podcast, etc). Thank you for your ongoing contribution to this platform.
Hi Peter, I love your work. I'm some sort of Videomaker and Photographer and watching your videos helps more than you think. Thanks for the effort you put in every single video and I hope the best for you and your future. Thank you again.
You absolutely kill it with these two minute tutorials and you're one of my biggest inspirations in videography! I just made my own speed ramp tutorial for premiere and after effects and since I'm pretty new at it, it would mean the world to get some feedback from you!
dude! i dont even use premier pro (cant afford a computer to run it) but its so refreshing to see a video explain in JUST TWO MINUTES what others take up to 10/20 minutes of your time to demonstrate. top job man. thankfully I can do something similar in davinci resolve once i get my linux box sorted with drivers and stuff.
Your channel was suggested to me by RUclips and OMG I am glad I clicked. Have been watching your videos for the past 5 hours. Learning so much! Thank you so much for this channel! Love it!
Nothing but perfection as usual Pete! Can you do a tutorial on how you created your graphics for your intros??? I'm extremely curious how to do it. Thanks again as always for sharing your talent & knowledge!
I found a shot to actually use this in and came back to rewatch this video to figure out how to do it. I always just did an abrupt cut to slow motion. Thanks for helping to make my video a little cooler, Peter!
He assumes knowledge here. The base framerate of the project is 24fps. He interprets the footage before dropping it into the timeline so that the whole clip is rendered in slow motion. He then selects the point where he wants the slow motion to start, and speeds up the footage before that point back to normal speed. In the case of 120fps, that's 500%. Am I right in assuming that in the case of footage taken at 60fps, the speed up percentage would be 250% to achieve normal speed? (125% for 30fps) Conversely, some videos talk about *slowing clips down* 20%, 40% or 80% for 30, 60, and 120 fps respectively. But that would mean dropping the clip into the timeline without interpreting the footage first I am assuming.
I would never go to this channel for tutorials. Basically I wanted the brief overview which he does, nice and snappy. But there are 100s of RUclipsrs that give actual tutorials on these things.
Taking my first film class this semester. Asked the professor how to do this, he said it would be too hard to explain to me. Peter did it in 2 mins! Thank you man!

Question: when using this technique is there a way to affect the speed of the audio as well or does this work specifically on video only? Thanks for any answers.
If you see the little darker grey areas above where you put the marker, you can drag them out to the left and right, then the handles should appear and you can use them to smooth out that curve.
Hey Peter, when I speed ramp, I am limited in editing the clip afterwards. For example, I cannot use position keyframes after I use speed ramping. Is it meant to be like this? Or is there a way around it?
There are some limitations, for example you can't apply warp stabilizer to a clip that's had the speed adjusted with key frames, but the work around is to nest the clip. Right click -> Nest. I'll usually apply warp stabilizer to the original clip (which is in the nested sequence), and then speed ramp the nested clip in my main sequence timeline. Same thing would apply with the position keyframes, though it might make more sense to flip the process depending on what your end goal is (apply speed ramp to clip in nested sequence, then use position keyframes on the nested clip).
This is actually pretty great - previously I've been cutting the clip and just manually adjusting the speed in the speed/duration menu, but that doesn't always look right. I'll definitely give this a go next time, thanks Pete!
I knew how to do this but still watched it and to my surprise it answered my biggest question I had with edits for a long time on how to change the smoothness of the transition. Thanks soooo much!
Love your Two Minute Tuesdays!! I'll drink coffee made with my Chemex and absorb some knowledge and caffeine at the same time, haha. Keep on rockin' Peter!
THANK YOU! I've currently been editing the funkalicious dance sequences of a wedding video and adding in speed ramps, but they've been a more choppy process version of speed ramping. Like, speed ramping for dummies. You, my caffeinated man, have given me the gift of speed ramp kicassery right when I needed it! McKinnon to the rescue!
From someone who'd only just discovered yourself Peter, just wanted to say: THANK YOU SO FREAKING MUCH!!!! Amazing, fun, informative, to the point tutorials, and this one in particular has saved me SOOO much freaking time compared to what I was improvising. #Legend
all just learned something new... learned about speed ramp expression yesterday now I am seeing it used.. OK... I'll try it. I hope I can find tutorial how to do it in Hit Film Express as that is what I use... thank you very much! Got to go find that video...
Nice. I've done this in this past but a very different process. Also I'm assuming 120 fps is necessary to get it that smooth? My camera only shoots up to 60 fps, Would that be enough?
Honestly, I've found that it doesn't really matter the exact percentage that you speed it up. It works just as well doing it manually and seeing what looks better to you. I tend to leave my clips a little bit slower or faster than normal depending on my music choice, and it can make the video feel more impactful.
If you are working on a 24 FPS timeline, you would just have to adjust the speed to 40% for the 60 FPS clip that you are using. 40% of 60 equals 24 which will enable smooth playback on your timeline. Anything slower than that (without twixtor), will result in a stuttered clip. Hope that helps.
Lindsey Nguyen If you are a student in college, it's only $20 a month for all CC, so that's the best option for college students. Otherwise, it really just depends on what programs you will be using. I've used the effect in my first video. I have however found that it works best if one has persons or objects in front of the camera and not open landscape. Thanks for the video! Love to watch your videos.
If you do the same thing in AfterEffects it'll also ramp the audio. I was happy to see that this was doable in Premiere, but a bit disappointing that it doesn't do audio as well.
just click and hold anywhere on the line, before the point you make with the pen tool(shortcut: p), then push/pull the mouse forward/backwards to speed it up or down. you should see a small box appear that shows you the current speed. hope that helps.

If you do the same technique (more or less) in AfterEffects it'll also ramp the audio. Premiere ignores the audio completely.

Now THIS is a tutorial. Quick, to the point, high quality, no useless padding. Loved it, great work.
So for 120fps the normal speed would be 500%, what percentage would be to a 60fps footage? And take it back to its normal speed?
