Dunna Did It Great video man! Really broke down the whip & the speed ramp to a t. Any tutorials on how you put multiples of yourself in one video? Anyway, Great vid again. Great suggestion
Ignore all the stupid music comments, I literally didn't even notice until I read the comments. Great video!!! This has helped me hugely, thanks so much :)
I've watched about 10 b-roll tutorial vids over the weekend and this is by far the best! I really appreciate the way you broke it down, Dunna. You've got a great teaching style! :D
I really enjoyed how when you landed out of focus on the plant you just pushed in and added a sound effect. Really fun and creative addition to the technique, whether it is intentional during filming or not!
This is i mean so far the best tutorial one can watch on youtube for speed ramping and swoosh transitions, from shooting to editing, what could be better than this, people like you on youtube are blessing, can’t thank you enough and cant wait to try this out and practice more to get rid of my shaky hands. Thanks a lot
No to the too loud, repetitive music that was terribly annoying, but YES to the content. You did a great job explaining, both showing how you filmed, then how you edited. My favorite part? You reply to everyone! Timely! Not 3 months after their comment. Thank you for sharing your experience and for being a 'real' guy that anyone would want to work with.
Hey Kay! Thanks for the feedback! I’m really glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully you check out some of my other stuff too with the more appropriate music and level haha. Thanks for noticing about the comments as well, it means a lot to hear that things like that make a difference to people. 🙏🙏😁😁
Some people overuse this stuff and now it has become a pet peeve of mine when people use intense cinematic shots and music with uninteresting footage. But when it’s used correctly with worthy footage it’s a masterpiece.
Music was not a problem as all the insightful information zoned it out. Cant wait to give this a try! Thanks for showing us how to do such a simple yet effective trick.
So weird you read my mind!! I was thinking all week, I really want to learn how to learn this effect.... and you. Came out with this video ! Thank you!!
Great video - cool end where we can see that it’s a one man show even producing your own royalty free music. Thumbs up, what matters is the content of this nice tutorial and that’s awesome.
I was revisiting some of your previous tutorials, this one is pretttyyyyy useful and cool 😍 and the fact you can create your own tones is AWESOME! # DUNNA DOES IT ALL
Thanks ! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen big channels talk about this but never show the demonstration like you did. This will help my b-roll scenes. Thanks for the value, new subscriber here. Look forward to more content
this is perfect dude, I'm trying to start up my own business doing personal and professional space organization and customization, gaming rooms/offices/ studios and stuff and I basically want to use my own spaces in my home as a sort of "trailer" to show off the kinds of things I do and this will be some awesome little tricks to make that video looks slick.
Underrated. This is a great video. Your voice is too quiet compared to the repetitive background track. Would be nice if that was toned down and a bit better song. You don't need constant background music when you talk. Good content though
I totally disagree. The repetitive beat helped me focus on what he was saying a lot more, the song was totally fine but you're right, you dont need constant music when you talk in a video but it wasn't disturbing me enough to decide to leave a envious comment like you did LOL ;)
Gosh.... such a nice video as a beginner I never found such detailed video on this topic. thanks alot. As a learner the content is so nice u hardly pay attention to background music. thanks again sir
loved this tutorial, I had made my "own" way of dong this but indeed didn't work as well. We will see what comes out next time. I absolutely love the shot composition in the first minutes of your video.
This is an awesome how to video. You really took the time show how the editing was done after you did your transitions. I personally like the background music. Keep it coming!
Content is KING. Period. Yes, the music and voice but hey you only get better within time. I thought you did a great job! Thanks for sharing, I was looking for some tips on whip transitions before I upload my first couple of videos in late October. I emulated what you did and it worked perfectly. Super stoked and thank you for putting in the time to explain whip and speed transitions. Well done.
Hey Jacob! Thank you so much for saying that the way you did. I really appreciate your candor and that you still kept it positive! I'm glad the video was helpful for you and that these techniques are going to help with your videos! I did another video here talking about how you can speed up the premiere workflow with the whip transitions if you're interested. ruclips.net/video/mTZQ4DbNrSs/видео.html
Dunna Did It Thanks for the reply. Anytime and I will check out your other video shortly. Just subscribed, I can definitely learn some techniques from you👍🏻
I know right! When I first heard of that it was one of those "it's so simple how come I didn't think of that" moments. Some people will tie a piece of string to their camera, stand on the string and pull up against it to keep it tight. So simple but super effective.
This is such an in depth and informative video - thank you so much! Exactly what I've been looking for when learning this technique... Something very well explained and broken down into steps that could easily be understood. Subbed!
Oh wow. So that's how it's done. I didn't know. Now I want to try if I could whip up something cool like this. It turned out really good. Thanks for the information 👍
Used it a few times, mostly if the opportunity presents itself or it’s motivated narratively. I’ll shoot the elements sometimes as a just in case but often times I find alternatives that work better. My preferred use for this technique is combining two takes into one. For example camera has subjects coming out of house, but van picking them up timing is off so I will use the camera swish as a cut point on my out shot and the planned camera swish on my secondary shot to make it look like one longer more precisely blocked shot without the complications of the timing workout out naturally. It’s also used when someone throws a knife at a person in a shot to make it look like the knife flies fast through air and lands close to subject even though it was placed already. The swish pan shots connect those two moments as one. Great video mate.
Awesome suggestions! Thanks as always Mark! Quick question... how often do you film people throwing knives at each other 😉? Actually, speaking of that! I used this same thing in high school in a video class when I had someone tossing a Gatorade bottle to another character, I even overlaid a picture of a bottle and had it spinning like crazy during the whip! I had totally forgotten about this until you reminded me!
Very helpful video. I'm just starting out in film, and I have been struggling with broll. This video is very helpful, can't wait to try later today! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this great how to! Whip transitions are one of my favourites but I always wondered how this magic happens.. finding myself making videos first time ever, this is really helpful!
Thanks a ton! I'm glad you liked it! Maybe we'll see a bit of this in your upcoming stuff? Just hand the camera to one of the kids and you'll get some good whips 😂
Another great video man... I'll will definitely be trying some of these techniques... glad to see you're including some of your musical talents in the video... Rock on mate...
prettty good tutorial. i would suggest that you make the music looop a little longer with some variation. its pretty painful to hear the same 2 or 4 bar loop for about 10 min. good video though.
This was excellent. Good teaching pace, no time wasted in over pretentious claims or self boost of glory like some other really “popular” RUclipsrs. For your good deeds I shall reward you with bountiful shares of links to your Channel with my peers. Well played sir. Here I gift you not one but 4 playboy bunnies 👯♀️👯♀️
Went out today and used this technique. Not bad if I may say so. One thing I realized when editing is you really have to consider the slow motion aspect to keep a good pace in the final product. I did some excellent shots that took 6-7 seconds but when put on a 24 fps timeline the clip is way too long. So I had to do extra work and speed up the clips in post just as you said. BTW you're an excellent teacher. Please keep it up.
loved the video!! i would really like to know what type of music you used for that last edit! I really like that type of music for like travel videos ! greetings from Orlando!
Thanks so much! Not sure exactly what song it was(this video’s from a while ago) but I highly suggest checking out musicbed for your music. There’s a link in the description!
"unwatchable" with regards to the music is really an overly dramatic reaction. sheesh. the video is great regardless if you appreciated the music or not!! Great content explained in an easy to understand way. Thanks!
Music was throwing me off but u gave GREAT content..especially with PLANTS!! this is my specialty n I was trying to figure out how to practice my b-roll using plants..THANKS!!🌱🤗
Great advice. I’ve been curious about this technique. I have a keyboard shortcut suggestion for you when editing. Instead of cutting a clip, removing the first part and then ripple editing the remaining clip over you can just put the timeline cursor where you want to start and hit “q”. It will trim off everything before that point and ripple edit all at once. If you want to remove the last part of a clip just hit the “w” key. Makes those kinds of repetitive edits super fast.
You’re the second person today to suggest q and w. I actually use those when I’m editing already but I figured for the sake of explanation in this video I would keep it simple haha! And for anyone reading this, be careful with q and w. They are awesome but they cut and move all the tracks unless you toggle them off... I think I’m gonna need to make a video for just those keys haha
You know. I figured that anyone who can explain more advanced techniques like whip transitions and speed ramps would know about those shortcuts. Right after I sent the comment, I figured that you were just trying not to complicate the video for people. But it's still useful advice for beginners so it would make a good video. And yes, be careful with them. I sometimes hit the wrong button and end up clipping out the entire clip or having the wrong track toggled and clipping everything like music. It's best to use them when you are first assembling footage. Great for trimming the fat off of selections. Don't have to spend so much time in the bin making perfect selections. Just grab a chunk and trim it in the timeline. Dig your channel, man! I subbed
Haha I’m still super glad that a couple people have pointed it out in the comments though so thank you! It’s a great tip! Thanks for the support and I hope to see you in the comments section adding value in the future too 😉
Thank you SO much for this video! Super helpful. TBH, I was most impressed by your shortcuts!! Like, I didn't know you could cut without dragging the mouse over to the cut tool lol or zoom in to your timeline so effortlessly! Do you have videos on your workflow and shortcuts?? If not, can you reply with some of your fave shortcuts? I can't imagine how much time this knowledge would save me as a Premiere newbie.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I don’t have a video yet but I’m planning on making one so keep your eyes open. I use a cut shortcut all the time, I’m not sure what the regular one is but I custom set it to “B” because that’s what I’m used to from another software. Also, using “ripple delete is super helpful. I have that set to “X”. Hope that helps!
@@dunnadidit I'm thinking if buying a refurb macbook 2011-2014 (or an ipad pro) 2015-16 just to get my foot on the door with editing with the apple ecosystem. I'm new to apple and my last cpl of of videos I shot with JUST MY IPHONES (XR AND 6). I used imovie to edit my first video and l want to use lumafusion to learn go be a more established editor. But apple product be stupid expensive and my budget is virtually zero. Just want go get started. Found them online for 300-500. Worthy buying?
Wow, this was SO helpful! I had to instantly subscribe. Awesome back-to-finish complete overview, but at the same time including details & wisdom. Superb. Love your style, too!
What software is that ? Can you suggest a free alternative (for WINDOWS) which comes at par with the professional piece of editing software you are using. I am new to editing and would like to start on choosing tools at a budget.BTW, great tutorial and neatly explained !
It’s called adobe premiere pro. I’m not 100% sure of any free options that will get you the same control but I know there are some free/budget ones out there. Probably a better question to ask google haha! Thanks for watching I’m glad you enjoyed it!
This is dope. Did you go into using the easing adjustment on the speed ramps? Adds next level transitions! The music wouldn’t let me mentally watch the whole video.
I didn’t go into using the easing function. It’s something that I’ve actually found I don’t like most of the time. Useful in certain instances but most of the time that it actually makes it look less smooth. Thanks for the feedback about the music too!
Nice tutorial! Except next time, add in some epic music instead of that horrible "screeching on a blackboard" atrocity you used. Make me hit the "mute" button. Yech!
“Unwatchable” is an interesting choice of words considering that this is one of my most popular videos lol. But I get what you’re saying. I was kind of experimenting with the music in this one and for obvious reasons I haven’t repeated that experiment. Thanks for the feedback Uwe! Hopefully you can check out some of my other stuff too!
But Dunna Did it, how many views are you missing out on because of the music? Personally I couldn't finish watching because of it, which is a bummer. Would watch if you re-uploaded it w/out the music tho. Hopefully you can see this is meant to be constructive feedback as I know it takes a lot of effort to put yourself out there and wouldn't want to be discouraging.
Leilani - Its a funny thing... In the comments on this video I have had more compliments on the music than any other video that I have posted, as well as more complaints about it than any other video. I like the music so I'm not too worried about the views I "might have been missing" it's been really interesting to see how people feel about it though. Thanks for your input.
Thanks for the tips! I’ve been practicing these and your vid helped a lot, I hadn’t found another one that addressed how many frames make a good transition. You’re using a lot less than I expected so I cut mine down and they’re looking MUCH better already. Thanks man!
Do you use this technique? Do you do anything differently?
Dunna Did It I use it 😉 And in FinalCutProX you also can make whip transitions with cropping in.😉 Rayn Nangle made a video about it😄
Welcome for the 1.8 ;)
C.T. - Cool! I’ll definitely check it out! I can do fake ones in premiere too but they never quite look the same!
Devin - Thanks brother!!
Dunna Did It Great video man! Really broke down the whip & the speed ramp to a t. Any tutorials on how you put multiples of yourself in one video?
Anyway, Great vid again. Great suggestion
Music drove me a little crazy but the tutorial was worth it, subbed!
Haha yup. Live and learn 😉 thanks for subbing anyway
Whip transition 1:00
Scene lighting: 3:16
Taking shots: 4:34
Whip editing 5:40
Speed ramp tutorial: 9:30
You know it!
Add *Example Sequence **12:59* too
Ignore all the stupid music comments, I literally didn't even notice until I read the comments.
Great video!!! This has helped me hugely, thanks so much :)
Thanks for saying that Rob! Cheers!
I like your book selection. Orson Scott Card, Rothfuss, Gaiman! Also this was a great tutorial. I want to try this with my next video.
I've watched about 10 b-roll tutorial vids over the weekend and this is by far the best! I really appreciate the way you broke it down, Dunna. You've got a great teaching style! :D

Thank you so much!! Glad you liked the video!
Thank you for this. I’m having trouble with camera shake and the strap will help.
Do you use a monitor for the a6000?
No problem!
I’ve used a monitor before but didn’t use it often, it was a 7” neewer monitor.
So weird you read my mind!! I was thinking all week, I really want to learn how to learn this effect.... and you. Came out with this video ! Thank you!!
I’m glad you found it just in time for you! Have fun playing with it!!
You are talking like a magician assistant..😂
😂
The music is probably the best thing about the video! I actually came back to watch just because of it!
Thanks so much Martin! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video - cool end where we can see that it’s a one man show even producing your own royalty free music. Thumbs up, what matters is the content of this nice tutorial and that’s awesome.

Watched so many videos where they do teach speed ramps but not exactly how the beginner should. THANKS TO YOUR EFFORT !
Thanks for watching!!

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you liked it!
At 5:46, that's definitely an Art & Luth on the wall! Nice choice. I've got the same one, but with the cutaway..
It’s a seagull actually but if I am correct, they might be made in the same place.
Lol 😂 this was awesome! I was playing bass then came upon this video, so I just played along while watching the video!
Great groove and video!
Haha that’s amazing!
This is an awesome how to video. You really took the time show how the editing was done after you did your transitions. I personally like the background music. Keep it coming!
Wow that’s so nice to hear! Thanks for letting me know!
Great video tutorial. I didn't notice the music until I read the comments section. 💗
Thanks so much! That’s good to know!
I didn’t notice the music till I read your comment now I can’t hear anything else lol.
I found myself focusing on the repetitive music instead of the tutorial. I wish this video had no music. Great content, though!
Cool tip...going to try it on my next video. Thanks
That’s awesome!! Have fun!

My pleasure man! Can't wait to see you in the comments sections in the future!
I use the tripod and other techniques but for whatever the reason, I never thought about using the strap, such a simple technique yet so effective!
I know right! When I first heard of that it was one of those "it's so simple how come I didn't think of that" moments. Some people will tie a piece of string to their camera, stand on the string and pull up against it to keep it tight. So simple but super effective.
This technique is going to be so useful for my next dog vlog hiking trip video. It seems to save a lot of time, which will be very useful. Thank you!
That’s great to hear!!

I'm super glad that you liked it!! Thanks for watching!
Like this, will definitely give whip transitions a try.
Have fun!
Very helpful video. I'm just starting out in film, and I have been struggling with broll. This video is very helpful, can't wait to try later today! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!!
Music gets annoying after a couple of minutes, but video content is good thank you. Can these effects be done in any freeware editors?
Thanks for watching! I’m not sure about freeware editors but I think they should!
Thank you so much for this great how to! Whip transitions are one of my favourites but I always wondered how this magic happens.. finding myself making videos first time ever, this is really helpful!
Very fun and informative video. Super clear explanations! Thanks! 👍
Thanks a ton! I'm glad you liked it! Maybe we'll see a bit of this in your upcoming stuff? Just hand the camera to one of the kids and you'll get some good whips 😂
This is the type of video that I will watch until the end! Thanks for the amazing tips. I can't wait to try this out on my Sony ZV-1
Who would click dislike?? This was dope and informative!! Thank you...definitely going to subscribe!!
Thanks so much John! I really appreciate it!
You are the genius of the lamp man.
Un grazie dall' Italia !
Now if only I had blue skin!
Beautiful. Didn't know this was so simple ! So much one can do in film making :)
Absolutely! Pretty easy when you break it down!
Another great video man... I'll will definitely be trying some of these techniques... glad to see you're including some of your musical talents in the video... Rock on mate...
Thank you so much! That’s awesome that you’re gonna try it out. And yeah the studio Dunnas needed to make an appearance at some point!
prettty good tutorial. i would suggest that you make the music looop a little longer with some variation. its pretty painful to hear the same 2 or 4 bar loop for about 10 min. good video though.

I love this kind of stuff. More please! Showing the hole process....how you shot it.....then how you edited it.
Thanks so much! I’ll keep that in mind!
This content is amazing dude! Loved the interaction with the band!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
Loved this. Just the right amount of detail and explanation - it's not often that a youtube shows capture of the footage and the editing.
Thank you so much Mike! I’m so glad you thought it was good! Can’t wait to see if you in the comments section of future videos!

Super helpful tutorial, but also, I LOVE YOUR BOOK SELECTION!

the intro really made me smile. that is gold!

Thanks Rakul! I really appreciate the kind words!
This is what I find.
Almost all explained here and its just simple
Thanks!

Totally! For the little b-roll sequences used to establish the scene they work wonders!
This actually got me stoked to try these myself. Thanks for creating these videos
Really awesome tip and tutorial, thank you 🙏
Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it!
Great job explaining the transitions. Oh and nice salt lamp 😃
Thank you and thank you!! Love my salt lamp!
This is the first time I’ve learnt something new about editing in a while great video
That’s great to hear! Thanks for watching!!
Just commenting for the Wise Man’s Fear book on the shelf. 👌🏼
Nice band. I’m subbing off that Alone.
Haha they are a pain to work with though... Bunch of divas
Totally does! I look forward to the video! Thank you :)
Beautiful, I think I will need to practice seriously to get this. Nice tips
You got this! A little bit of practice goes a long way!!
You got me hooked on the quality and the Enders Game books on the shelf!! New fan man. Going to incorporate that into my vids.
That’s awesome!! Thanks for watching!!
What computer year model are you using?
I’m using a 2017 MBP 2.9ghz quad core i7 16bg ram w/ Radeon pro 560 GPU
@@dunnadidit I'm thinking if buying a refurb macbook 2011-2014 (or an ipad pro) 2015-16 just to get my foot on the door with editing with the apple ecosystem. I'm new to apple and my last cpl of of videos I shot with JUST MY IPHONES (XR AND 6). I used imovie to edit my first video and l want to use lumafusion to learn go be a more established editor. But apple product be stupid expensive and my budget is virtually zero. Just want go get started. Found them online for 300-500. Worthy buying?
It all depends on the specs of them, but those older ones might have trouble handing video files 😞
@@dunnadidit 1080p ok?
Depending on the computer it should be able to do 1080 for the most part
Wow, this was SO helpful! I had to instantly subscribe. Awesome back-to-finish complete overview, but at the same time including details & wisdom. Superb. Love your style, too!
Thank you so much! So kind!
*WE WANT MORE STUDIO DUNNAS!!!*
Haha of course you would!!
Top tip using the camera strap to steady! Who needs a gimbal ! :)
😁👊🏻
Awesome! I think I got the “whip” technique down, but when does the “nae nae” come into action? 😆
Sorry, I just became a dad; working on my dad jokes.
CONGRATS! You’re well on your way to full “lame dad” status!!
Cool video specialy i liked how u showed the camera move! Very important part. Thanks!
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!
I’m so gonna use these in my next video!
Do it! Hit me up when you do and I’ll check it out!!
insha allah
Yess so helpful! Where are a few places that you find your sound effects??
Nice! I think I found these by just searching “free whoosh sfx” on RUclips.
you had me at "studio dunnas"! subbed...i produce my own music for video too so big ups to ya!
Haha that’s awesome! Thanks for the support!!
how did you do the editing for studio Dunna? Where there are multiple Dunnas inside. Its so cool! Hope you can make video tutorial about it soon
great video bro
Thanks so much!
You could give Hitfilm a try. It has a Pro and a Free Version and they produce Tutorials. It's kinda a mix between Premiere Pro and After Effects
Great video, the background music is suspect and a bit loud
Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind about the music... what do you mean that it’s “suspect?”
Dunna Did It just saying I didn’t like it lol but rock on bro just kidding with ya
Dunna Did It dope tutorial tho !
Haha! I see where you were going with that! Thanks so much man! I appreciate you watching and letting me know about the volume 👍
Dunna Did It yes sir not a problem and you got yourself a new sub here 🤗
Best lessons so far Ive seen all video on RUclips. You rock.
Thanks so much Vince! You rock for being so nice!
all in the socks #comfortable
#canadianstyle
Best tutorial about this technique out there
What's up with people and the background music... everything was great in my opinion
Haha this video has been really polarizing for that fact lol. Thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Yech!
Haha thanks for watching!
Fuck u Glenn!! 🖕🏻
You responded to every comment.
Subscribed. Plus this video was helpful. Your little band thing was cute.
Thank you. Looking forward to more.
Thanks so much!!
Well, as everyone else said: the background music is really annoying to a point that makes the video unwatchable despite great content.
I like the music and how you made it, though I agree it's too repetitive. Enjoyed the video!
Thanks for the feedback Frum Pilot. I appreciate it!
Saw the effects with the band, instant subscription.
Haha glad you liked the Dunna’s!
or get a camera with crappy rolling shutter... its gonna keep whipping ...xd
Haha haha! RIP Sony a6500 in 4K. 😂😂
Thanks for the tips! I’ve been practicing these and your vid helped a lot, I hadn’t found another one that addressed how many frames make a good transition. You’re using a lot less than I expected so I cut mine down and they’re looking MUCH better already. Thanks man!
That’s awesome to hear! Glad my video was helpful!
The repetitive music made me leave. :(
Thanks for letting me know! I appreciate you sticking around to leave a comment.
You are a fool.. that you ignored the positives of this video and concentrated on music
@@dunnadidit you are such a gentleman!
@Luian Chang - thanks 😊
i actually really liked the music ngl
Excellent tutorial. Mind-killing music.
Glad you learned from it! Sorry about killing your mind though 🧠
I would have kept watching if you didn't have that background music going the whole time.
Thanks for the feedback Emily! Thanks for watching the part that you did!
love the new approach to film you you tube videos especially the music clones, well done :)
Thanks a ton!
