Myung spoke to my friend and I once. We were coming out of the Main Street Armory in Rochester NY after their show and John was walking to the bus just in front of us. My friend recognized him (bass slung on his back in a gig bag) and yelled out, "JM! Great Set!" ... as he kept walking, Myung looked back over his shoulder and said, "Thanks guys"
Dream Theater will always be one of the most influential bands of my growing period and they even made me want to play music in the first place. I haven't liked one of their albums in years but I would love nothing more then then the new album to come out and it be amazing
Exactly. I think a huge part of my life will be lost the day they do not make albums anymore. I can't deal with that n my life. Dream theater is like owning a part of the Bible that no one else owns and you keep it close to your heart to read when you need it.and nothing else works. To be a fan for over 20 yrs to anything this true. It something to cherrish for a lifetime. I even have my 13 yr old daughter jam to Theater
After being a fan for about 25 years I have heard so much bla bla upfront to any new album. About energy, spirit, guitar sound as big as a chocolate cake, dadada. Only 1 out of 4 albums finally was not disappointing on the long run. So I will wait and give it another try after the Astonishing disaster.
I feel ya man. Im sort of in the same boat. TOT is by far my favorite album by them as its the most accessible, heavy and just has so much groove. To me it felt like the best version of dt. I had hoped they would continue to keep that in mind going forward but that was definitely not the case. Each record I usually dig a song or 2 but the last 2 just put me to sleep. It was just to much and just lacked that flair that usually hooks me in. Plus they definitely toned down the heavy riff based stuff as of late. Which is why im actually really excited for the new record! They have stated in interviews they wanted heavier and a more focused record. They gave the die hards there fill of 22 minute 28 track records. The new song sample while short sort of already shows what they are talking about. Just release a damn single already!
I hear your point and agree about the public relationship department about selling a product hyped to the : famous cliche...our next album will be our Best lol...I mean...they could retire and still be the Best Progressive Metal Band in History...
@@edamix3184 This is actually a good question. Well, I guess no other bass player than JM and no other drummer than MP had more impact on my devolpment as a musician. It is perhaps alike with StarWars. Everything after the original 3 Episodes was more or less bullshit to me and still I would consider myself a fan. And so does Images And Words live on as one of my top tier records of all times. Thanks for reading this ;)
I'm not sure why The Astonishing gets high amounts of distaste. I feel that I need to express my opinion on this and hope the band reads. I always thought that since Train of Thought, the band has been more heavy focused. I'd been wanting them to create a more progressive album especially since Scenes From a Memory is my favorite, with technical bits but with an emotional focus. They definitely delivered with The Astonishing and it was a refreshing experience with a grand scope, there was less reverb on LaBrie's voice, I very appreciated and enjoyed his voice compared to recent albums, the songs are more chord driven but still have their technical moments, they carried emotional weight you follow the story and the characters. Since creating a concept album like this can mostly cater to one type of fan, I hope moving forward they do not shy away from the progressive elements as much as they have recently and keep a balance just as they did with their work from Six Degrees and earlier. Alas, I know being an artist means that you have the freedom to create for any number of reasons whether for yourself or for fans. I conclude by saying that they definitely have the freedom to create whatever they like and I know no matter what, it will be a sound to behold.
Love, love, love the Astonishing! The melodies and emotional tones are amazing and it was a refreshing change from the heavy stuff (which I still love).
it's amazing how its come to the point I look forward to the interviews more than the new album, lol. One of these times maybe they'll surprise me, but my hopes of them working with an outside producer (or demo-ing) seem as likely as my chances of joining them on stage to play some hand drums.
They bring up a fascinating point that they all stayed in the same mansion together for this album. In the like of Led Zeppelin, Chicago, and probably most of those 70's bands.

9:05 So, it wasn't just Mike Portnoy's leaving... we want the old mindset! Come on guys, how are you not getting this? Fans just want to listen to you, the hip people in the industry are the ones that actually inflate the whole thing. I mean, just watch a Zappa interview. But I really hope that this Images and Words tour really put your minds in the right place. Stoked to hear what you're coming up with
Am I the only DT fan who wishes they would go back and make more compact records like Awake? I’d much rather have a record of 10-12 5 minute songs that I could sing to than 4-5 12-25 minute songs that I can’t sing along with because each song is filled with Epic instrumental sections.
So is Mangini going to actually be heard on the album or is he going to be sample replaced and time aligned to hell and back just like on The Astonishing? I'm not hopeful if that teaser is anything to go by.
Too bad Mangini is not more part of this incredible band ! I believe they have 10 to 15 good years left. He should be a BIG inspiration to this part of Prog History !

Will JM join the discussion in the next installment? Stay tuned to find out.
I got 20 bucks on him nodding his head and saying "yes" once.
I totally agree. He's too polite. Misconception the bassist are usually the quiet ones. Looking forward to the new album. New label also cool.
He's playing the water bottle bass at 5:00 typical Myung talk lol

He'll look like a troll doll
He’d look like a Monchichi
I literally thought that while watching the video, like if someone photoshopped his beard onto his head
Thank you so much John Myung for your input :)
Most rock musicians can’t shut up for five seconds - Myung is a very quiet breath of fresh air.
For the first time since Dream Theater began, it seems Myung has aged.
Yea, 33 years will do that to ya...

John myung is tapping the bottle in 8/4 with a polyrhythmic flow against tempo of the conversation.... aahhh in classic dream theater fashion
