Mangini you probably won't read this but anyway I still wanna say it, WOW. I've been a big critic of your previous albums with the band, not because I don't like you but because I knew you could do way better. Yeah, there were good moments there but man, it always felt like something was missing, was it the mixing, creativity or IDK what. Anyway, listening to this new album, you finally killed it man, everything is perfect, even the god damn drums sound. And especially you creativity, you did it all man. Congratulations and you really deserve to be in the Dream Theater. I'm so greatful for this band and glad to see you thriving. Also can't forget to mention Petruccis job. Damn the guy is on 🔥🔥🔥
The first Dream Theater album i listened to was ADTOE. The first album i was exposed to and the first album that got me hooked. So thank you Dream Theater and thank you MIke Mangini if you are reading this. Don't get me wrong, its not my favorite album since delving into the discography but its not my least. Honestly, the inability of the fans to move on is sad.. it's like the guy who cant get over an ex girlfriend he had from 10 years ago. Yeah, you're not getting the exact same experience with a new one, but hell, its still a lot of fun.

i agree his performance on this album is possibly his best but i think he did an amazing job on the other albums too. i wouldn't agree his performance on this album is by far better. i think it has more to do with the way his drums are recorded and produced on different albums.
@@dyslexiusmaximus You may be right. For me, the way he plays on DOT seems to be more engaged, and aggressive than on, say the self titled album. The drum sound us unbelievable though, it is on par with any of the MP albums. And I think that is the biggest difference this time around. His drum sound has varied across the other albums, and this time they finally nailed it.
I really hope that in the next album, Mangini will be a co-producer alongside Petrucci and Rudess. The guy has put up with DT for a decade now so it would be great to fnally see him get a promotion.
Mangini did great on Distance Over Time and he was finally given a proper sound as compared to the previous releases. If DT has one more album left in them, I hope Mangini becomes co-producer alongside Petrucci and Rudess. Since a large majority of the DT fanbase are drum enthusiasts, it would make sense if Mangini were to have a say in production.
I thought Mike Mangini was great right from the first album he did. I didn't always like the drum tones though. Now I'm appreciating the sounds more. He IS a great drummer. Different form Portnoy but easily just as good.
good to see Mike mangini gaining ground with this album and I get to know that how much important is the ground or stage for such a talented man to show their real potential. and dream theater is perfect for him and now he has already been an integral part of the band. beside the band congratulations to him for this one
It doesn’t surprise me such decisions get made. I remember the mix engineer for Metallics AJFA said he mixed in Jason’s bass one night. Came back the next day and everything had been changed. I remember hearing Slash say how he wanted his latest record to more raw and not so EQued especially the drums. I remember watching Neil Peart describe his detailed almost obsessive compulsive process of getting drum sounds for many a Rush album, particularly because Geddy and Alex wrote songs a certain way, and Geddy sang a certain way. Another thing to remember is that Mike was going in to a situation of a lot of tension and little control. Even at his level it takes a while to really gel. I think we saw that with Rob Trujillo. Definitely with Jason Newsted. Both Metallica bassists had their growing pains. That is how humans work. I am not a picky drum sound person and have liked the sound throughout so no broken eggs for me. It is nice to see how energetic and satisfied Mr. Mangini is about the sound he achieved. That gives a new shade of understanding when listening to the record, which could be their best ever. I think this could be one of those real breakthrough records because the whole thing seems really accessible to a wider audience while keeping true to the die hard proggy metal fans. Possible Grammy nomination next year?? Highest charting record??
DUdes one of the best song in the album is " At wits end" falling into the infinity vibe with awake taste and touch of the last of dream theater ! i cant wait for the deluxe collection and the vinyl version !!! sorry my bad english
I can't help myself but it seems to me Mr. Mangini is actually complaining that his drum sound gets messed up in postproduction :-) I hope this is not the case with this album - I am not sure about that from the samples we were given.
It would be interesting to hear what he thinks of his sound on particular DT albums. I think the self titled album had an ok sound, but on Dramatic Turn his kit sounds so tiny, while on Astonishing there's the massive overpowering snare that mows everything else down.
Referring to his problem with the sound he hears as opposed to the sound the engineer hears, I remember Neil Peart struggled with it too back in the day. Might have been the Moving Pictures sessions where they actually taped a mic or two onto his chest to give the mix more of a drummer's perspective. This was from one Rush biography I read.
I think that Mike has been *very* badly served by Team Mix ever since he joined The Band - the [final] drum-sound on the CDs just hasn't been "good". - Here's hoping for *this* record.
right?? i got that also. there's no valid reason why my $600 drum kit sounds better than Mangini's kit in the studio. tbh, his drums dont sound bad on Distance Over Time though.
I feel bad for him because I think he's driving himself crazy trying to please these whining, complaining fans. He just wants to give them what they want.
I think he's just venting a little frustration because us humans cannot hear what he creates from the perspective he'd like. It's harmless intellectual frustration.
@@DanielGonzalezC Exactly!! I own his instructional video " the grid" and He plays such weird polyrhythms and odd time figures that most drummers that are haters of his just dont get ! As a drummer for 16 plus years, it makes me frustrated for Mike to hear they (who ever they are) don't include him in the mixing and mastering process.
