    Im gonna miss you, mangini.
    For the last few years, your drum was absolutely perfect in the new albums, unlike when you just joined DT.
    Im one of the fans who is missing earlier DT songs, but with current songs, i cant imagine that MP can play with the trend now

    I had the privilege of playing in a Band with Mike back in the early 80's and even as a teenager into his early 20's, he was not only an incredible drummer back then, but he was super to work with and a genuine nice person. I am so happy to see that he is doing what he loves and has helped make great music over the years.

    Mangini is a genius and an absolute master. It is a crying shame he gets so much hate because he replaced Portnoy and actually gets blamed for DT's sound going soft, like he has any control over the mixing and production of the DT records.

      I don't think anyone thinks he's not a master drummer. I just prefer Portnoy's sound more than Mangini. Mangini's sound is just so hard. Portnoy's drums sounds more organic, softer.

      @@alieffauzanrizky7202 I know... You can't have a single thread, video, article, interview, talk, ANYTHING without some idiot mentioning Portnoy. I'm sooooooo beyond sick of seeing that. It's been discussed more than anything else I've ever seen over and over on the internet. I wish these people would just appreciate things for what they are. The bottom line is, Portnoy made the best albums of his life after leaving DT and the world is better for it. If they don't like it, don't listen and leave people who do the hell alone.

      Exactly. You watch this dude's drum solos and realize that the only people who can even comprehend what he is capable of playing are those who are musically educated on a drum kit. He is literally too good for anyone else to appreciate. It's like an American toddler trying to understand Arabic. This guy is phenomenal and anyone who disagrees with that really just has no idea what they are talking about. With that being said, I still hate the fact that Dream Theater exists without Portnoy...but his replacement is more than capable.

    • @izmraz3563
      @izmraz3563 6 лет назад +1

      That's a true fact. But I hear very light melody in his play, btw I like how you use the word perfection, but its't perfect yet as we all know in DT. I felt lots of MP's influences in him now, or is he trying to find that soul DT needs some how?

    Watching drum cam footage of Mike playing to any dream theater song feels like an education. The way he chooses every note really seems to flow and follow the music so well. His playing seems to go beyond playing the pocket and really adds color and shape to the groove. Check out his personal RUclips channel for his drum cam footage of playing Metropolis pt.1 in the unision section, ITS UNREAL and demonstrates how short changed Manginis musical contribution gets in recordings and DVDs.

      Yeah, after watching some of his playthroughs, it makes me appreciate him and the sound that much more. I wish more drummers were conscientious of things going on in music and making efforts to accent them, like he does....choosing to play for the song more than for himself. It's amazing.

      Nothing against Mangini, who has been the ultimate professional. Any one of those guys in that audition would’ve been great for the job.
      However, if what Lang says is true, it was very scummy from DT to do that to those musicians.

    • @GiovanniLogrono
      @GiovanniLogrono 7 лет назад +14

      The reason Lars isn't as good as this, is because he doesn't care about being a great drummer. He only cares about being Metallica's drummer. He's said it him self, he doesn't practice drumming, only practices Metallica songs. There really isn't a place for a drummer like MM in Metallica. It just wouldn't fit.

    • @shreddykrueger9465
      @shreddykrueger9465 7 лет назад +10

      Mangini's body didn't have to take nearly 2 decades of drug and alcohol abuse, and Lars only runs Metallica songs, he's not even working to improve, he's just trying not to lose what he has. Lars' playing in '89-'91 era is also pretty inarguably great for what Metallica is. Most of the hate he gets is deserved, but Metallica and Dream Theater require such different things behind the kit.

    • @nathandrums0
      @nathandrums0 7 лет назад +1

      +Klaus O'Brien while I agree with you Lars didn't HAVE to take drugs. That was his own fault.

    • @flacidhouse350
      @flacidhouse350 6 лет назад +3

      This guy also plays exclusively at the easy end of the dynamic range. Drummers who just do all this light tappy stuff can go into their 70's. If we were having this conversation 15 feet from that kit we wouldn't have to raise our voices. That's why modern Dream theater drumming sounds like people setting coffee cups on a table and Metallica sounds like the cavalry running down the enemy.
      Lars doesn't have to care about being a great drummer. He is a great drummer.

    As a lifelong Neil Peart worshiper, I have to wonder how Neil would compete against this style. Obviously Mangini has Neil's ability. It's like every song this Mangini guy plays is actual two songs, a right side and a left side, both mirror images of each other. This is the general theme of his playing. It may not be exactly like that, but I'm fairly certain I can pick up on this obvious ambidextrous display. Mangini is so technical. I aspire to his playing over Neil's, though my heart will always be Neils as a students is to master. Let's not forget about Neil's lyrics. "Wheels within wheels in a spiral array. A pattern so grand and complex (DNA). Time after time we loss sight of the way. Our causes can't see their effects." - Natural Science. Neil predicted AI in this song off Permanent Waves. "A quantum leap forward. In time and space. The Universe learned to expand. The mess and the magic. Triumphant and tragic. A MECHANIZED world out of hand. Computerize clinic. For superior cynics, who dance to a SYNTHETIC BAND. And in their own image, their world is fashioned. No wonder they don't understand." All these musicians in general are often super deep as individuals it seems.

    Ironic how Mangini's drumming that I enjoy the most, with DT, is in the only album that he didn't work with the rest of the band on studio (A Dramatic turn Of Events)! I think JP should work the drum parts more often!...

    all comments about manginis technicality... come on people!! From the very beginning this has been a band of TECHNICAL musicians. being that way implies they have soul and feeling and talents the size of a galaxy. the boring soulless you talk about is your own lack of talent.

    Petrucci and rudess gang should let mangini have a free hand in having his drum piece when do compose songs. Not having him in song writing process is an insult to his genius.

    I would never claim that Mike isn't a great player or that 'this guy is better than that guy' but for my own personal tastes I don't find his playing to be all that interesting. That being said I really enjoy what he did on this track, technical and yet very musical. A solid overall performance.

    I actually love this song. But sometimes I feel MM doesn't have that raw power of progressive drumming. There isn't warmth. I love his technicality. It's just the sound of the drums to me sounds muted or squeezed.
