I’m a soundguy from Boston. Before cv-19 Mike would always come out to support his friends bands when they played local clubs and he’d often sit in and do a solo. We hung out quite a bit and I can say he’s not just an absolutely amazing drummer, but a great human being as well!

Mike Mangini is credit where credit is due.........always an impossible feet to replace an original member.....but when you look to the future , he is an insanely talented drummer, and his musicology is beyond what most drummers understand. Not an easy job but you have to say he more than capable of keeping this band moving forward! and he proves it every show. Kudos

Jerry Mercer. He was awesome! Saw them live in small venues three times in Halifax NS. JM gave my wife a stick after one of the concerts. Still got it. Somewhere. Ha ha He was the coolest live. Man, the good ole' days.
Strange that you should say that because the flashing lights during his solo flashed me back to an April Wine show in Seattle around 1979. In the front row and feeling fine until the drum solo and flashing lights became so powerful that I blacked out for a few seconds and would’ve hit the ground if I wasn’t held upright by the crowd . I think I remember double kick drums and a light in each of them
Amazing....he employs the classic blues "call and response" with highly inventive patterns, and also employs (whether intentionally or not) fractal permutations of those patterns. Indeed, he is a VERY "musical" drummer, and as passionate as he is technically masterful.
Incredible drummer and well played solo. It's a shame that a few drunkin' idiots couldn't keep quiet for a few minutes while their buddy filmed the solo.
Tomi Igo I have to agree. He’s an incredible drummer but his solos really aren’t that hard technically. I feel like if anyone put the time in anybody could do those rolls. Nothing sets his solos apart. However his drumming in songs is really something imo
It's funny to see all the hate comments on Mangini... u do realize this guy was born in 1963 right? That's a 57 year old still getting around the kit like a boss! Applause sir!!!!!!!
Mangini was hired for his inventive artistry and genius musicality in addition to having a complete arsenal of licks. He brings a fresh sound while passing through Portnoy territory to deliver familiar beats and solos native to the music of Dream Theater. We love Mike because he's unpredictable at times and also delivers favored sounds at other times. His repertoire is unrivaled.
Admonishment prior to viewing: "please make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in the full upright position and that your seat belt is correctly fastened."
Mangini is pure Fun . And he is real . I don't even have to get into his musicianship . DT had chosen the Man . Btw . i have met Mike a couple times at drum workshops same with Thomas years ago ,also a fantastic guy ,super fun and real .An astounding drummer . Same with Marco we talked shop in german , Super musical drummer and great guy and fun to watch . I would never want to say that if DT would've chosen Marco it would be better or with Thomas it would be better . I think both would've flourished in that band . But i have to say, seeing this solo here performed by Mike and catching up now with other tunes that he plays with the band . Mike is busting (you know what) ! Congratulation Mike Mangini .
It's not wrong to miss MP, I get it. But in reality, he left the band. You'd be hard pressed to find someone better than Mangini who could slide so seamlessly into the seat.
I hear the comment that MM is "soulless" and "Mechanical" "Boring". I feel compelled to point out how rigid this music is. It is similar to classical music in that there is no variation. Note for note performances every night which lends itself to boring. For the players as well as the audience. Though I think the audience is there for just that experience. I am not that familiar with Mike Portnoy but seeing this band I get a sense that he is another technical monster. I don't find this solo very inspiring preferring more musical/melodic guys like Vinnie, Rod Morgenstein, Chris Coleman even Toss Panos. But MM is an enormous talent and has incredible technique and facility.
The music isn't that way with Portnoy behind the kit. Portnoy is a technical monster, but unlike most technical monsters he maintains the ability to convey emotion, project power through his playing, and he doesn't perform to a click track which is like fucking to a stopwatch.
Portnoy was a founding member and doubtless had much more latitude than any succeeding drummers would get. I suspect Mangini is doing what he’s told to do. It’s part of keeping one’s gig.
Songs complex as this are the most fun to listen to when played to sound the same as the original. That is the characteristic of this style. You don't go to DT concert to sing and dance.
He does things that are incredibily difficult. He is technically a genius, You may say that the way he plays is not so spectacular, so visual but he is GREAT. Othe thing: The way his kit is settled is odd. Cymbals too high and the small drums so high he has to raise his arms... The drums not in a size order from left to right but to be played alternatively with each arm.... it´s strange and only works for him. But it works. It does because he is so fast with each hand that he doesn´t need to use both hands to do a fast scale up the drums.
