You know I really don't understand how you can give this guy shit, watching this video I'm convinced once again he deserves his place in DT, he plays with commitment, he's insanely skilled and he looks like a very nice person, as far as I'm concerned he owns my respect, keep it up Mike M. !
Kinda funny when you realize that those sticks that he was using is soaked with resin to add weight and therefore require less force to get the volume and intensity that he needs when playing stadiums with dream theater😂
IMHO, They picked him because he was able to emulate Portnoy's style better and he's more of a Metal drummer. Personally, I think he could be an even better player if he didn't waste so much time on the ambidextrous gimmick. However, Minneman is actually more fluent (played with Necrophagist) but doesn't have that Roadrunner Records Metal appeal and nor does it seem that DT wants to be a real Progressive band any longer. Just my .02
I could agree with that, but I can not with those saying this man is not a great drummer. Some of his solos sounds strange, but I find them more like a work of art, not always understandable to everyone.
Guppusmaximus Minneman is underrated but he cant be compared to Mangini when it comes to technical stuff. Minneman is great but Mangini is better. Aside from their biography hear each drum videos of mangini and understand.
zackattack94 they totally loved his vibe though, don’t think that’s it. And are you really dissing his shirt? I don’t think anybody really cared. I certainly didnt
That has been my major gripe with Mangini. He's a brilliant drummer that's not being questioned. It is his drum sound (especially the trigger sounding snare; I&W) on every album since he's joined. This snare and kit sound fantastic!
Mr. Mike Mangini, ever since he was just a kid, he was passionate playing drums. Talented right out of the gate. You combine that God given talent with loads of hard work, over half a century's worth, the answer simply=G.O.A.T💪 !!! If people not only in the business let alone other seasoned drummers can't see and hear that this man's skill level is somewhere in the stratosphere, then they are either blind or deaf and unfortunately some are both. A kind hearted man with an incredible gift that he chose to share with all of us. And never has he ever criticised or had a harsh word towards anyone let alone another drummer, total respect. Where he is from, and it just may well be another planet, he represents just fine !!! We all love you Mike, extremely proud of you !! May God continue to bless you, your family and of course your fellow band mates including your predecessor.💪✌❤
I was playing drums in a support band for Steve Vai when he came to Adelaide back in about 98. Steve was fantastic but Mike was just so amazingly proficient. His skills with one hand were just about what I could achieve with both. Technically astounding. I sat backstage and watched and totally felt like hanging up the sticks after that night. Just killer!
I don't know how people say this guy is robotic. Look how he just flows around this kit. He makes it look effortless. Half if the people complaining likely can't play this or any of his parts well, if not at all. Hell I can't. This guy is from another galaxy.
I think my favourite aspect of this video is, as you watch Mike it's obvious from his expressions and body language just how close to the edge he pushes himself in this song and I'm sure all the rest too. He's not just keeping time or playing it safe and that's exactly why he was the perfect choice for this band!
I love this video because it shows how unbelievably good Mangini is. The guy really is an absolute master but he gets so much hate and disrespect because of the circumstances. Portnoy is my favorite drummer but to deny Mangini is anything short of a genius is just intellectually dishonest.
Man... watching this video and reading Mike Mangini's posts on his page, I feel sorry for all the bad feedback he's getting for his drum sounds on Dream Theater albums. The production decisions (be it Richard Chycki's, or Petrucci calling the shots) is messing up the drums and he's getting the blame for it. I for one will cut him some slack. It's bad enough to have to fill Mike Portnoy's shoes as far as drumming and persona goes... I can't even imagine being the new guy in an established 20+ year band with such passionate (and picky) fans, and not getting a say even in my own sounds. All part of the fine print on that job description, I guess, but still. More power to you Mike! - A picky long-time DT fan.
+ThiagoCamposOfficial Well said! Petruccis is too dominant on the sound production. Listen i.e. on their live dvd, you can barely here bass and keyboard. Guitar dominating both in volume and in frequency range.... Kudos for acknowledging that! I know you are into DT, being the leader of the best DT cover band there is! 😃
In my opinion; mike mangini is the perfect fit for portnoy, he may not be like portnoy but he can give what the band (DT) needs! Respect for this guy! What a great skill..
Sometimes I forget just how good Mangini really is til I see a "drum only" video like this and you can really pick out all the intricate details. His performance in this video is just superb!
I wonder if this is how Mangini wants the snare to sound on the album... Telling the band, "Guys, especially John, this is how we should have produced the album!” 😋
This album was really Dream Theater at their best. I saw them live during this tour and it was incredible!

Amazing how he switches from playing right handed to left handed like ten or more times during the same song. Complete separation and limb independence. Amazing musician.
I've never understood the hate for Mangini. He's an incredible drummer and fits in perfectly with DT's sound. There's no doubt that Portnoy was also incredible and was responsible for so much of their success as a band, but Mangini is phenomenal to watch and listen to. It's like the perpetual argument whether Tarja, Annette or Floor is the best Nightwish singer - they've all brought something new to the band in my view. Mangini hasn't got the same performance charisma as Portnoy, but he's a different style of drummer.
It's 2019 and people are still having Portnoy vs. Mangini debates. Give it a rest! Portnoy isn't coming back. I prefer Portnoy over Mangini myself, but both are phenomenal drummers. It's hard to fill the shoes of some like Portnoy, and I think Mangini has done a great job. The amount of hateful comments I've seen directed towards him is disgusting and childish. I've met him once and he was the nicest, humblest guy ever, not to mention a technical beast on the drums. So give it a rest people.
@Nero he essentially relies on his larger muscle groups to propel the stick. Fingers move as a result of the larger muscles doing the work. Mangini on his dvd The Grid goes into this a little actually.
i must admit, i hadn't heard of mike mangini before he began playing with dream theater, and being a mike portnoy fan, i was skeptical. but he really is one of the best metal drummers active today, and he doesn't have to hit hard or sacrifice technique to get the job done. i'm sold!
What really blows my mind, even more than his one-limb speed, is how he can alternate back and forth from right-handed playing, to left-handed so smoothly and naturally! It's so unique and impressive! It figures why he sets up his kit symmetrically!
Mangini keeps musicality from DT alive. Even though he's an extraordinary musician, a master as the rest of the member, he is able to fit easily into the music complexity, rhythmically speaking. I hope he can develop his own tone on the upcoming records.
This whole thing sounds better than the album version. James sounds awesome here!!! I think it's because the track isn't lathered with reverb and other effects, it sounds raw and clean and beautiful!
I've never been a fan of dream theater, but I really appreciate the skill involved. This guy isn't just a drummer. He's a true musician. I think I like this "smaller" kit better then the usual cube set up.
You can say what you will about style regarding any drummer, but Mangini is a master in his field. He has more than proven his abilities to move and articulate around the drums better than 99% of you out there. He wanted a home and band. Dream Theater was a perfect fit. Watching him perform is true art. Cut they guy some slack!
The thing about the production on the Mangini era albums is that Mangini is still the newcomer to the band, so he probably doesn’t want to tell John and Jordan what to do. It’s their project. On the other hand, Portnoy was there since day one, so he had as much control as JP and JR. That might be the problem with the album production for some people.
Oh my.... ckckckckck.... salute for you Mike Mangini,, the sound, drum set, cymbal set, technique,etc.. is not not different same like Mike Portnoy.. BRAVO!!!
OMg! I knew he is a freaking beast Amazing But Seeing Mike mangini Playing Like By himself Seeing What he is Really Doing on The Drumms It simply Outstanding Astonishing!
I know there's something i can't explain about Mangini's live prfmance in DT. I mean he's that guy who wrote "Gone Tomorrow"s drum part. This is such a refreshment to see and hear. I know you're that good Mike... And i love both Mikes in Dream Theater.
sooooo fucking good
You know I really don't understand how you can give this guy shit, watching this video I'm convinced once again he deserves his place in DT, he plays with commitment, he's insanely skilled and he looks like a very nice person, as far as I'm concerned he owns my respect, keep it up Mike M. !
I completely agree, the people who hate him should just accept that portnoy ain’t gettin his ass back in the band, they just need to move on
He's untouchable! Those one handed 16th notes are crazy!
I was impressed
When people say Mike Mangini doesn't play with intensity or energy.. really? The man is a beast!
This man is a powerhorse
Kinda funny when you realize that those sticks that he was using is soaked with resin to add weight and therefore require less force to get the volume and intensity that he needs when playing stadiums with dream theater😂
@@haekalbadjeber988 BS
Play and does not let play. In the studio ir is fine
@@haekalbadjeber988 Kinda funny that you are too dumb to realize that a heavier stick takes more force and power to accelerate to speed.
Zildjian - we want more Mangini videos like this!
i'm a portnoy guy... but mangini is just from another planet!
True dat.And his single strokes, holy crap.
Yeah he's insane, and his drum tone gets better every album. Especially on distance over time the tone is very nice.
I'm a Mangini guy, but this comment made me laugh, so true
@@ser_igel I think it might be there in place, if he got his hands into the production.
@@ser_igel what is soul for you? What performance has soul for you?
5:14 when you realize that you are too good
+ramirock96 HAHAHAHA made my day
that smile tho ^^
ramirock96 ahahahaaha im smiling
ramirock96 honestly lol.
jajajajaja...su cara de satisfacción
What a killer performance!
I really dig this drum sound, so I guess Mike is not the one to blame for the way it sounds in the latest records...
I felt the mixing wasn't that good.
I think it started all the way with the sound engineer. The sound was neutered on purpose. I think they've learned their lesson. We'll see...
I agree, completely different vibe from the album, yet he's playing the same thing!
People over use the word incredible but this is truly an INCREDIBLE drummer.
Technically one of the best drummers on the planet. It's nice to see him with DT. They made a good choice.
IMHO, They picked him because he was able to emulate Portnoy's style better and he's more of a Metal drummer. @Nero I mean mangini did set a world record but I still like Marco better don't get me wrong
Mike is a beast! That smile at 5:14 after he nails a truly mind bending section 🤪
this is totally insane from Mike Mangini...too much awesomeness! worth watching over and over again...Mangini rules....Yeahhhh....
I would love to hear the rest of the album with this drum mix.
Absoluty PERFECT
I agree. I would like to see enigma machine from these angles.
Agree. DT album needs this natural drum sounds to complement Mangini's extreme skills..
+IPostVideoForMM when?
That has been my major gripe with Mangini. He's a brilliant drummer that's not being questioned. It is his drum sound (especially the trigger sounding snare; I&W) on every album since he's joined. This snare and kit sound fantastic!
Eric Chavarria Actually i think ADTOE sounds BEYOND amazing

It's amazing how simple he makes playing something so complex. Technique and precision out of this world.

Huge fan of Mangini's playing, he is simply awesome!
The great thing about Dream Theater Songs, is it allows the drummer to play unique and varied drum parts. Great playing as usual. Cheers
I love this video because it shows how unbelievably good Mangini is. The guy really is an absolute master but he gets so much hate and disrespect because of the circumstances. Portnoy is my favorite drummer but to deny Mangini is anything short of a genius is just intellectually dishonest.

2:52 that right hand
1 2 what hand? I don't see anything....
I think he does that on the final chorus in Lost Not Forgotten too and it's mind-blowing.
this !!!!!!
Yet another video to prove why he's my favorite drummer... Freakin' amazing!
So much powerful with this "dry" and less processed sound!
Please consider for next album!

6:00 I can't believe he can still casually fix the cymbal while playing O.o
it is called acting bruh.
+RH Risas No, it's called him trying to tighten up the cymbal... There would be no point in acting that for 1 second once in the song!
+RH Risas you do it when you love your cymbal. only a drummer can feel it dude.
It happens during one of the "easy" parts of the song, but yeah still impressive
LOL, weird not many noticed it ;)
You amaze me Mike Mangini!
A Real pro and a true musician! Beast mode
There’s a reason why Mike Mangini’s one of my top 5 drummers ever. He’s phenomenal and the fills in this song are ridiculous.
Beautiful mike!!
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this video, I always find it magnificent. Mike is just amazing, super human.
Mike "The Man" Gini
WOW!! Musical and technical genius! This is other worldly! Leave this man alone and just appreciate a master at work!

I love the drummer faces Mike makes!! i would love to meet this guy, seems like such an outgoing person!

Another lvl of drumming :((((((
I'm not a drummer. Can you explain what he did there?

Mangini is a monster!!! And the Drums are better mixed on this video than in the album!!! hahahahaha
2:51 are you kidding... Look at his right hand 😂
Absolutely fantastic!

I love how Mangini always seems to be genuinely enjoying himself while playing drums ❤️

Mike sounds great here and he also sounds great on DT12.

Anytime I watch this guy I'm shaking my head and my jaw is on the floor.
DT should remix all their Mangini era albums with this drum sound. Absolutely killer
I've never been a fan of dream theater, but I really appreciate the skill involved. This guy isn't just a drummer. He's a true musician. I think I like this "smaller" kit better then the usual cube set up.
That was a Force of Nature I just watched.

This was a eye opener. I always wondered why the drums sounded so flat in the albums. It sounds so freaking good here. Such a graceful player.
Happy that there is no Portnoy comparison on the thread.
now u said it

yes. Very much so.

+VisualPlague hahahahahaha
+D.R.Caleb lol true.
which album are you talkin'about?
Watching this man work is truly inspiring
his drumming is so Cool 👍
it was incredible.. what innovation, precision, feelling and technique
The best mangini sound is in the extreme album called waiting for the punchline.
Never feel bored watching the video, amazing...
