As a guy who literally started because of Mike. its a god send to see him back. BUT its a regret in life not to have seen this line up live. Mangini is a class act
@@MooseheadStudiosI’ve had the pleasure to see this line up every tour since the astonishing live back in 2016. As you said it’s a shame to see Mike go but it’s also great to see the original dude back on the throne. Going to see the 40th anniversary tour next year
It's autotuned as fuck. This entire concert was released on DVD. He sounds completely different in all the other live performances of this song and that world tour.
Underrated band. These guys are so tight and so sophisticated in their musicianship that I’m surprised they aren’t more well known. Unbelievably talented.
They aren't more well known because music is an art and not a sport. Their technical skills are amazing, but honestly thats all I hear when I listen to their music. It doesn't move me at all and good music should move people. That is why they aren't filling stadiums, or headlining huge festivals and never will.
Underrated?? dude they might not be a mainstream band but every musician in the world I know of has heard and respects the sh*t out of Dream Theater. I dare you to google "top progressive metal bands" and not find DT on at least top 5 spot of any list
I’m barely a month into Dream Theater and I’m finding new songs all the time that just rule. Anything live from these guys is just spectacular. They’re a fantastic band.
I swear if James quited the band wveryone would throw shit at the new member and keep asking for James to come back eventhough they shat on him all the time hahaha
Well replacement of a drummer is one thing but James voice is as important as JP's guitar tone without those two there would be no Dream Theater I can't see replacing James or JP On a side note, if James ever wanted to take a night off, I'll be more than glad to fill in for him, I can sing all those Tunes, of course never at that amazing level of Excellence as the immortal James LaBrie.
Well, I'd say it's a combination of the tightness of the Mesa he was using on this tour paired with the Axe FX and a couple of choice pedals. The Music Man Majesty is also key with the DiMarzio Illuminator pickups. It took a long time but I finally own all of them. It helps being one of the greatest players of all time, but I pretty much have his tone now.
We all can have his gear, but none of us will get his tone if you know what I mean. It's just how it is. Every human is unique in some way. JP has perfected his sound in terms of gear and has abilities that many look up to. Of course, I would love to sound like him, but I stopped trying to replicate his tone because it's impossible to mimic it 100%. It's also hands, feeling, mindset etc. At the end of the day, it's him and his unique attributes that are crucial, not the gear he uses.
Over and over again I relive the moment I'm bearing the burden within Open wounds hidden under my skin Pain as real as a cut that bleeds The face I see every time I try to sleep Is staring at me crying [Chorus] I'm running from the enemy inside Looking for the life I left behind These suffocating memories Are etched upon my mind And I can't escape from the enemy inside [Verse 2] I sever myself from the world And shut down completely All alone in my own living hell Overcome with irrational fear Under the weight of the world on my chest I buckle and break as I try to catch my breath Tell me I'm not dying [Chorus] I'm running from the enemy inside Looking for the life I left behind These suffocating memories Are etched upon my mind And I can't escape from the enemy inside [Bridge] I'm a burden, I'm a travesty I'm a prisoner of regret Between the flashbacks and the violent dreams I am hanging on the edge Disaster lurks around the bend Paradise came to an end And no magic pill Can bring it back again [Guitar Solo] [Chorus] I'm running from the enemy inside Looking for the life I left behind These suffocating memories Are etched upon my mind And I can't escape from the enemy inside
I think James sounds really good when he stays in this range or lower. The real issue is when he has to hit very high notes, which he can't do as good as he used to.
Myung went full on tap dancing mode at 5:45, I wonder if he's just switching patches or if it's something else. He seems to be pressing a different button for each note...

OK. Here’s how I see this. James is not always perfect but this performance he sounds amazing. As far as the drumming goes I’ve been listening to a lot of different performances by each drummer and I got to say I love them both I can’t really tell which one is better but it doesn’t matterBecause the music is fantastic
Awesome tune and band is so original. Portnoy and Mangini have def carved out their drumming legacies. But there’s a Latino drummer here on YT that’s got this tune covered note by note on a tiny jazz style kit. El Estapario Siberanio, spelling is pretty close. Just search by song title and hang on. The guy is no joke with handling this tune.

DT took recreation for almost 14 years (5 albums with MM) after hiatus proposal from MP. MP did the similar thing. Then they reunite after the contract is over 😂
5:03 - those wah-wah flavoured chords Petrucci playing in this section, that sound, I'm assuming that like an octave chord with a raised fourth to give that clashing sound?
Mangini is a national treasure. I wonder if there’s anyway we can get two touring versions of Dream Theater? MP is great and is one of my absolute favorite drummers, but there’s just no way he can play the Mangini stuff and do it justice. There’s no one on earth that can except for MM.
trademarkTM and the thing is that dragonforce makes the songs too fucking fast, but their new albums are good and thay can play it live with good sound
The intro still gives me goose bumps. Jordan + Mangini (they are all good_ but those together could be argued to be in the top 3 of their field. Just so much raw intelligence+talent plus genetics. JP this time didn't fuck up the solo too much, he usually has problems with this one, always the tap and sweep part.
for guitar, the position for rythem and soloing is different, so its really hard to transition from position to position in the middle of a song and play it perfectly. much more than any other instrument
No doubt, Myung's among the best. Victor Wooten is arguably better by an entire order of magnitude though. But both guys are super humble and so incredibly talented.

Same here. He's really cleaned it up, and I can hear the individual words he's saying for the first time since like 2005, lol

I swear you could record John's live guitar and put it on any album ... so god damn perfect ... just listen to those bendings
You obviously haven't listened to all their live stuff. He is very good, but there is stuff that was embarrassing to listen to on a few albums.

Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories

And I can't escape from the enemy inside
[Verse 2]
I sever myself from the world
And shut down completely
All alone in my own living hell
Overcome with irrational fear
Under the weight of the world on my chest
I buckle and break as I try to catch my breath
Tell me I'm not dying
[Chorus]
I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories
Are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

I'm a burden, I'm a travesty
I'm a prisoner of regret
Between the flashbacks and the violent dreams
I am hanging on the edge
Disaster lurks around the bend
Paradise came to an end
And no magic pill
Can bring it back again
[Guitar Solo]
[Chorus]
I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories
Are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside
I love the compressed tone JP has on the solo of this song. You can hear every note. Also could be because he is Jesus. Literally, look at that hair.
One of the best ever in my life concerning music!
Brilliant musicians all of them and what a musical chemistry!!
If you havent seen Mangini play live then one find it hard to believe the guy's got only 4 limbs
Labrie’s voice is always better when the songs have drop guitars. His range is not in the limit all the time. So he’s pretty much more confortable.
I think James sounds really good when he stays in this range or lower. The real issue is when he has to hit very high notes, which he can't do as good as he used to.
I feel like everybody would be fine with it if he didn't try to hit the high notes and just sang around them with a different melody
mangini is really wild...
There was Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler and nowadays Dream Theater.
A masterclass on 4 instruments in one live video.

nowadays we have dream theater and opeth.
