      The outfits at weddings are so ridiculous and most of the women and girls are in white not just the bride and bridesmaids. The men are getting drunk at the bar. There are middle-aged women in bodycon dresses consisting of basically a white corset top attached to a white skirt and white lace sleeves. The bride and bridesmaids are caked with makeup to look much older. There was one video where the bride looked 12 from behind because of the size of her head compared to her body as if she hadn't finished growing. Her bridesmaids did wear nice dresses, though with kneelength full skirts and sleeves to just above the elbows.

    Just throwing it out there that the whole "asking the father's permission" before proposing thing really is not at all far removed from these guys asking to take ownership of the daughter. Both are just vestiges of the idea that women are the property of men in their life, and I think both need to be seriously challenged

    • @jaykilkenny5727
      @jaykilkenny5727 7 месяцев назад +17

      I agree, though asking the father for marriage to me seems just as tradition.
      Though personally, I'd ask both parents rather than just the father. It makes sense to me anyway because what if the person asking isn't the right type of crowd for the daughter, or what if the person asking is doing it for personal gain?
      Though I do understand the whole "man's property thing," it can also just show respect to the parents.

    • @Aurora_Lightbringer
      @Aurora_Lightbringer 7 месяцев назад +6

      It's mostly just a tradition and it's supposed to be symbolic, but yes, you are somewhat correct.
      It was originally used as actual ownership in a very loose form, as a woman's job was traditionally to serve her family and then her husband once she'd "decided" to make her own family.

    • @HerHollyness
      @HerHollyness 7 месяцев назад +7

      I actually agree with this take. My father is no longer with us, but if any boyfriend of mine thought he had to ask his or anyone else's permission to propose to me, he'd be kicked to the kerb. My opinion is the only one that matters - my dad has nothing to do with it! I actually have the same opinion about being walked down the aisle - that stems from literally 'being given away' by your father to your husband i.e. "She was my property and now she's yours." Again, he's not here to do so but even if he were I wouldn't want my dad to walk me down the aisle, no matter how 'traditional' it is.

    • @jaykilkenny5727
      @jaykilkenny5727 7 месяцев назад +4

      @HerHollyness That's your decision to make. Personally, I'd like a semi traditional wedding. Course I'd be the groom, but I'd prefer to ask my partners mother of father for their acceptance of my marriage to their son or daughter. The same goes for a wedding. It can be very loose and modern, but some things in tact (i.e., wedding march, suits and dresses, white wedding cake) all in all it's all up to the two parties marrying to make a decision of their wedding.

      In the late 2010s an Irish traveler family was famous in NZ - they were here on holiday and within a week had the entire country mad at them. They were filmed taking over a picnic area, insulting locals, leaving trash everywhere and trashing their motel rooms. Running scams as they moved about, intimidating people. There were even warnings in the media that they were going to another town. They were deported.

    I'm only up to the part where you're talking about John's family but if you haven't already Google his sister Josie, her and some other family members including the mam actually went to prison/got put.on tag for beating up a pregnant lass and I believe one with learning difficulties from their community. There is another episode with Josie Blinging up a tag she has to wear with gems!! I'd love to see you react to more of these, maybe Sam and Patrick's wedding as she wasnt a traveller but he was but she did everything the gypsy way for their wedding. I think I may have invested too much time in this show 😂😂😂. Lots of love Cam from county Durham xxx

    18:01 hey cam I’m a traveler but it’s the sad truth about the culture is that woman will get called “dirty” for being with men before hand even some people don’t like when you date someone without intentions of getting married,(fun fact travellers sometimes get nicknames for random stuff I actually have an uncle nicknamed grease because he likes elvis and the grease movies or even my granddad is called small John because he was short)

    "I've just finished watching 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding,' and I can't help but feel a mix of emotions. On one hand, the extravagance of the ceremonies and the strong sense of community among the Romani people is truly fascinating. The vibrant colors, the elaborate dresses, and the cultural traditions displayed are nothing short of mesmerizing. It's a colorful celebration of love and family that really stands out in a world where weddings can often seem standardized.
    However, as I reflect deeper, I can't shake the sense of brutality that accompanies some of the portrayals. While I appreciate the cultural aspects, the show also highlights some uncomfortable truths about tradition and gender roles within these communities. The pressure on young women to conform to certain ideals, particularly regarding their appearances and the expectations placed upon them for marriage, is quite alarming. It raises questions about autonomy, personal choice, and the sacrifices faced by these individuals in the name of tradition.
    Moreover, the way the series sometimes sensationalizes these practices can lead to harmful stereotypes. It's crucial for viewers to approach this content with a critical lens, recognizing the complexities and nuances of Romani culture that the show might overlook or oversimplify.
    In a broader sense, the reality show format often thrives on exaggerating certain traits for entertainment, which can perpetuate misunderstandings about the community as a whole. I believe it’s vital to engage in conversations around representation and to seek authentic voices from within the Romani community.
    Ultimately, this show has opened my eyes to the rich tapestry of traditions while also prompting critical discussions about cultural practices and societal expectations. It’s a reminder that behind the glitz and glamour, there are real stories, real struggles, and a real need for understanding and respect. Let’s hope that through dialogue, we can appreciate the beauty of the culture while also advocating for positive change.”

    As someone who has taught in a primary school which was for Romanian Gypsy children, I must tell you that Travellers are given a VERY bad reputation by shows like this. I taught Year 5 (ages 9-10), and they were the sweetest children I think I’ve ever met. They had so much love to give. Yes, the things about gender roles and young marriage/childbirth are very real, and SOME had problems with violence, however, so many of the children just needed guidance, love and support. I bonded so well with all of them, we were all crying when I left. They just needed gentle instruction and I was honestly honoured to have them as my first class as a teacher. They don’t deserve the horrible stereotypes pushed onto them, they just needed powerful role models. They were the most adorable children, many didn’t speak English as a first language and were well below the “UK Average” in terms of reading and writing. However, when the right materials were given, they THRIVED!! They’re not “dirty”, “violent” or “weird”, they just needed some love.❤

    Sooo, I agree with parts of your reaction, but I feel like describing “Grabbing” as weird rather than acknowledging that it’s sexual assault is an under reaction. Culturally it’s even more problematic because girls are devalued in this context if they’ve been alone with a boy. She’s making the best of it, but she can’t leave this guy who then throws her dog in a river. He was evil when he cornered her and ruined her reputation.

    This episode made me super uncomfortable. I’ve never heard of the traveller lifestyle before and I don’t know what it’s like in other aspects but a lot of what was shone here was pretty off putting. Abuse, objectification, assault, marrying off literal children, sexism, misogyny? that all seems really toxic and nasty to me and I don’t know if I could "respect the culture" to excuse that sort of stuff. It takes away someone’s humanity and agency.
