I was freaked out by how Al Mualim had pretty much brainwashed the entire town and nearly all his Assassins. It showed a glimpse of what the world would be like under Templar control with the Pieces of Eden.

Al Mualim was perhaps the most intelligent villain in the series he fooled both Assassins and Templars and manipulated the events of the whole game, he played his part perfectly and pretended to be an Assassin but in truth he was a Templar. I also find Altair and Al Mualim's conversations about religion, truth e.t.c. very interesting his voice actor did a great job.

Considering the fact that Al Mualim waa Splinter in the original cartoon for TMNT I'd say he did pretty damn well. Also, the philosophical discussions are what made this game more interesting than the others for me.

Yuwan that explains why Al Mualim appears in blue either. Al Mualim didn’t want to kill Altair, but to make him a Templar too. It’s because Altair refused that he wanted to kill him. Lucy was a traitor but she had a feeling for Desmond.

For me this is truly the best game in the series, no matter what the critics say; I missed that freedom of action and a bit of a dark mysterious atmosphere in the later parts. These brainwashed enslaved zombie people, assassins and inhabitants; and the evil "teacher" who was supposed to be on your side... such a good twist. Masterpiece!

6 years later so sorry for the response to something you probably have the answer to. The reason Altair was confused about the Templars was that some of them weren't entirely devious/sinister. Some of them had actual intentions for helping their respective communities, but went about it through horrible/morally questionable ways. This was contrary to the information that Altair was being spared by Al Mualim. The way he got the Templars location is a mix of two things. 1. The assassin burrows and 2. Al Mualim. The last Templar you kill tells you as much since he worked with Al Mualim.

The line "in truth, I did try" won me over, it shows there was a respect, and frustration, that the student that most troubled him, he wanted the most. There is a moment of regret, a moment of "my boy, if only I had succeeded, so much more could be done together"
It turned him from the "ah ha it was me along !"
To a villain that was clever and scary in his intelligence.
This kept the atmosphere of dread, death, misery and disease alive better than any over boss fight, that even the safety of home was not immune the folly of man

Back then everyone kept whining about how the modern day plot sucked and how "they just want a period piece world to shoot the shit in" and any action in the modern day would "ruin it" despite it being the defining trait of the franchise.
Ubisoft gave in, sacked the producer who was helming the series and cancelled the outline that would have ended with Desmond as the ultimate assassin in the modern day. The problems were beginning with Brotherhood, though. They got rid of Lucy in the most "last minute rewrite" way because they didn't extend Kristen Bell's contract.

At the start of the game Altair loses his master assassin rank for breaking the three tenants of the creed, demoted to a novice. But Malik returns with the Apple, giving it to Al Mualim and only towards the end of the game, when Altair faces Al Mualim, do you really see how mad he's gone with that power.
Altair defeats Al Mualim and restores order in the brotherhood and becomes the Master Assassin and mentor of the Assassins.

I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceive that this also was a chasing at the wind. For in much wisdom, is much grief. And he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow.
In real life this phrase is written in Ecclesiastes 1:17
I was stunned by the philosophical depth behind this phrase. It was used dogmatically as a constant reminder from the church towards the people to seek no knowledge lest they be miserable. As an atheist I expected no better. But the phrase also contains an amount of regretful truth. Knowledge unbounds the person from the illusions but these illusions provide a type of shelter which helps the person protect himself both mentally and psychologically. Nearly all the great minds from east to west suffered from melancholia to full blown depression.
With that in mind remember always that nearly everything is a matter of subjective perspective. And even your enemies can lead you to wisdom. As de Sablé did for Altaïr.

As Altair approaches the Apple, AlMualim’s voice quotes the book of Ecclesiastes. With knowledge comes grief

Spoilers: Ironically Altair said the same thing that Bayek did “I can’t destroy/kill”. Goes to show how dangerous this apple could be in the AC series.
