    Sam, my advice is too look up your local pipefitting union. Get in with them, the training is free and you earn while you learn!!!

    I'm so glad you did this video, and that youtube actually suggested it to me when I needed it! So far I've done two welding jobs, and I only got them because I knew the people or they personally recommended me to someone else. I've been applying online (sending resumes) to several jobs that seem very compatible for me, but have not had any response whatsoever yet. I've been scratching my head trying to find out what's going on - why the lack of response - and I think this hits the nail on the head. I knew about it before too, but kind of forgot and had to have it reinforced through crappy experience - that in-person relationships (or anything tangible over digital) is the way to go, and that even having a stellar resume doesn't necessarily guarantee anything.

    Proving yourself and making a name for yourself helps alot, working in a fab shop i have a fellow welder in his 50’s asking me for advice and a 40’s year old machinist/previous welder asking me for process needed to weld something up/repair and has me do it up, worked for them 2 weeks in and was thrown into a big stainless pipe job they got, mind you im 19 shy of 20 and already have a name for myself in my town

    Badass I never knew you were from Idaho! I’m in the ISU welding program like you mentioned, I got one semester left then I’m done. Lots of talent here yet everyone seems so greedy when it comes to their contacts in the welding industry it upset me because we’re all on the same damn boat, a boat full of green ass welders

    I feel exact opposite what you said, i sent 31 resumes out, as a greenhand i wanted to be a floorhand, i knew nobody in the business, in two weeks i go to alberta for my first rig job, yes knowing people helps, but you need to pound the pavement as well. i find it hard to believe you sent out hundreds of resumes and got no reply, unless your work history is spotty at best i think you lied,. I actually am editing a video about how i did it. and i got on one the best rigs in canada to get hired on, and i knew nobody and they pay me 4k a week. Still an informative video, ty

      That was the way you did it... not the way I did it. There are many ways to skin a cat. But calling me a liar and not knowing me is stepping to far. I’m happy you got hooked up have a great rest of your night.

      @@JacobSchofield ok whell sorry for calling you a liar, but 300 resumes no offers? that seams very drastic. Your right calling you a liar and not knowing you is a dick move. i apologize

      Wait what?? I never turned in 300 resumes I made well over 300 phone calls. Completely different.

      @JacobSchofield  4 года назад

      I think I either said the wrong thing or you heard the wrong the thing. But 300 phone calls. I google oilfield companies and just started going down the list. Page after page after page. That’s how I got my first job. Sorry for the miss understanding be blessed have a great night.

    I’m from the UK and have been doing an apprenticeship now for 3 years ( I have one year to go and I’ll be qualified at Level 3) what would be your advice to me? I’ll be 20, will have some money saved, and hopefully will be free from the company I work for ( it’s a dump but I’ve stuck it out to better myself)

    • @JacobSchofield

    Ok, so ive been looking at welding school for the fall, i hear alot of people talk about the high demand of welders and all the money but on the other hand i hear alot about getting laid off and being unemployed, is that just how it is out west welding pipes? Hows it look for somebody wanting to stick around the florida panhandle and not go out west and travel around alot? Im married and ive just got too much family here to leave anytime soon

    • @JacobSchofield
      @JacobSchofield  5 лет назад +1

      Its all up to your ability to stay hooked up with contacts and relationships with future employers. we get laid off often when the jobs come to an end but the company I am with now has welders that have been here for 8 years which is unheard of. If you want to weld pipeline there is quite a bit of traveling involved.

    Hey do you need college degree to make good money as welder

    • @JacobSchofield
      @JacobSchofield  6 лет назад +3

      Carlos Villarreal no sir most of the welders out here are highschool drop outs making 200,000 a year. College is great though if that's how you feel you would learn better. They teach you a bunch depending on the school

    • @carlosv1236
      @carlosv1236 6 лет назад

      Jacob Schofield oh okay because I'm junior in high school right now but I wanna be like you and I'm watching your videos so I can learn as much as possible to be successful welder.

      Carlos Villarreal same, Imy high school has a program where I can take classes at my local college to get some true welding under my belt..

    • @emanuelgonzalez6406
      @emanuelgonzalez6406 6 лет назад

      Carlos Villarreal ...in my personal opinion...I think you need more welding skills and right attitude...than anything else...it'll help if you show respect to those experienced older welders that are eager to share their expertise with respectful younger generations....just my 2 cents
