I’ve had my N64 since I was 8 now I’m 32 and still playing this beautiful game😅
ha my dad has had his N64 since he was a teenager, me and my older brother grew up playing OoT on that system. Good times!
I remember I had ordered the Zelda game through Nintendo Power to get the gold cartridge (now worth 1,000s if it was unopened).. that was like the longest wait ever but once it arrived I don't think I put any other game in the system for over a month. This makes me so nostalgic! This game though probably seems like Atari to the newer generation though. 🤣
@@urboiethansgameplay I grew up playing oot, Majoras Mask, Mario and Golden Eye 007...+1 sub
I like the silhouette Ganon from the N64 best
haha me too.
If I'm not mistaken when Ganon swung his swords it seems like the lightning flashed. And you wouldn't barely be able to see him otherwise besides his glowing eyes. And looking up at that silhouette was probably one of the scariest things I seen in my childhood because you can't even figure out what tf you're looking at. But it was also a nice touch how if you get hit Zelda screams. They sure captured the fact that everything was riding on this fight in a lot of ways for it being so long ago. Memories man.
The N64 version rocks! It is so dark and menacing that gives me the chills
I like the darker atmosphere of 64 more but let's be honest the 3ds remake is better is most departments and the 64 has shown its age
@@ummidk757 No, not at all, the 3ds version has gameplay bugs that the n64 didn't have (like rolling forward after a fall DOESN'T work with the 3ds version), the only thing it suffers from is 20 fps and really low resolution of textures but now with the pc port, 60 fps at least and texture pack the n64 is by far the best version, considering it also has many many fixes included and gameplay tweaks, it literally a no brainer
And there's blood
The N64 definitely had the ambience over the 3DS version. From the original Zelda manual, Ganon was depticted as a being that very few have bear witness to the sight of, and the darkness shrouding him in the original added to that theme, giving the player only minor glimpses of him whenever lightning struck.
N64 version is legitimately scary for kids. 3DS it's like they intentionally decided to not scare the kids. It's amazing how turning up the brightness and saturation can really change the scene so much.
@@Beegeezy144 i believe it was for light purpose. the 3ds is a handheld and a fight thats to dark would be hard to see while in to bright conditions.
The ambience and atmosphere of the original fight has never been topped IMO. It really feels like you're in a fight to the death against ultimate evil itself, and the fate of the world is hanging in the balance. I'm 34 now, and I played this game back when I was 12, and I still love it to this day.
I agree. A subtle reason why it's so epic too is that every boss in the game has some kind of description, when you just see the boss name it makes it that much more menacing. I only wish the fight was more difficult. If they remake this game (again), they need to keep the lighting dark and they need to give Ganon some new tricks. Not too much, just a little. Maybe a projectile attack like fireball or even the firebats like in a link to the past would be epic.
@@jimboramba a remake with beautiful modern graphics could be amazing, and updates to some of the fights and the overworld might elevate the experience further But the original is such a perfect masterpiece, I fear any change might blemish it somewhat. Then again I thought remaking resi 4 was a bad idea, and the remake was awesome.
Less is more when making horror. The imagination makes things more horrific than anyone can. This is what makes Lovecraftian creatures so terrifying, because you don't ever see them, but you know just looking at them is enough to drive a person insane. Humans just aren't built to comprehend what they're looking at. However, while you might not see the creatures, you can see the devastation they leave in their wake and the insanity of their victims.
In the original Ganon fight, the reason it's so iconic and memorable is because he's shrouded in shadow. Even with the lightning, you're barely able to make out his features, but you know he's large, twisted, and terrifying. You can see just enough to make your mind race, but not enough to really understand just what the hell he turned into.
What makes you think they were making a horror game? Just cause some parts are dark does not mean whatsoever that it's a horror game 😂
@@Maziongaongaonga When did I ever say that they were making a horror game?
You can introduce elements of horror into any media to build tension or shock.
That said, they did go all in on the horror when making redeads, the Family Tomb, particularly the Bottom of the Well, and the Shadow Temple.
You said "when making horror" like if it applied to this when it doesn't at all so yeah.
@@Maziongaongaonga Should I have said "when introducing horror elements"?
Got it.
@@David_Vitek doesn't really matter what I think you should say. You got a valid point:)
One of the things that makes this fight so cool is that it is shrouded in darkness only being occasionally lit from the lightning I grew up with the collectors edition of this game on n64 this was my shit.
I didn't know there was a collectors addition on the n64. I played a collectors addition on the GameCube that also Majora's mask and the two nes games.
N64: Watching a horror movie in the dark
3DS: Watching a horror movie on a bus in broad daylight
The N64 version has a much darker sky compared to the bright sky in the 3DS version
dude, the n64 ganon is the best one, it just feels so intimidating, he's bigger than you, and he doesn't get much light, so you only see his eyes and his swords mostly
I just think it's crazy that they've created a handheld that's superior graphically to the N64. When the N64 came out I never thought it would be topped. lol
This one and twilight princess had the best Ganondorfs. Twilight Princess is best one tbh. It's dark, detailed, great story and best character design.
I prefer 3ds
The 3DS remakes have better graphics to be sure but there was just something off about it too, I feel like the characters' animations (their movements, body language etc...) seemed awkward compared to the original game
I don't know how to explain it, did anyone else get that kind of feeling from the remakes too?
one of the best final boss fights, not too complicated but climactic as hell, the stage is set so well with the lighting and flames, the fact you lose the mastersword forcing you yo think on what weapons to use to hold your ground against ganon. Zelda's worried gasps as you take hits and the fact Ganondorf is determined enough to go all out with Link in order to seize his power. Hasn't been topped in my opinion.
I'm glad this comparison was made because it kind of highlights some of the visuals changes I didn't like in the 3DS remaster. I thought the remaster was too bright in this fight and completely removed that cool shadowed effect I remembered from the original, and I wasn't a fan of them making Ganon's tail even more bright and crystalline. It was also pretty obvious it was a weak point, but it was like they had to beat you over the head even more to tell you where to hit.
Majoras mask 3d put a stupid eye on everyone lmao
Agree, in addition to this I don’t like ganondorfs remastered face.
Totally agree, Newer doesn't mean better.
@@trevthekidd there’s fortunately a fan patch that removes the goofy eyeball weakpoints and fixes a lot of the mechanics that were broken in the remake, as well as adding some other cool stuff
@@protobuster12 where i can find that?
So although the graphics are nicer and more detailed on 3DS, we notice that the characters have less movement than in the original, especially Ganon and Ganondorf during their transformation and their outburst, as if the 3DS was less powerful than the N64
I’d like to see the comparison with an actual N64 copy cos this definitely ain’t from the Eshop
Or N64. It’s way too smooth
@@zzskyninjazz1821 I recorded the N64 version on a PC port, I don't own the original hardware so the best I could do would be to re-record it on an emulator...
Here is a little bit laggier than I remember, 3ds was smooth
@@zzskyninjazz1821 More than likely used the Ship of harkinian PC port which is an incredible port of the original game, and absurdly easy to set up. Best way to experience thegame, honestly.
2:14 and 7:48. Look at the difference in how his mouth moves. It’s just chilling in the original!
Just weak in the 3ds version
And Ganon swords don't shake in the 3DS version.
The 3DS version looks amazing, I can't deny that, but the N64 version has more character and atmosphere. On 3DS, the final battle with Ganon completely lost it's iconic sense of intensity and the visceral impact of Ganon's demonic appearance - even emulation doesn't match the N64 on a CRT. The combination of dithering, layering and numerous other techniques created incredible effects such as smoke, fog and dusty haze which haven't been recreated since.
A lot of people forget this remake was designed in mind for a screen and console itself smaller than a lot of the phones you're watching this video on. Visual changes including lighting reflects that.
The lighting and atmosphere is so much stronger in the N64 version. I hate it when remasters change clear artistic choices by the original developers. I would love to replay OoT with the nicer 3DS graphics but it's hard knowing that certain pivotal moments will be weaker because the developer made "safer" choices in the art direction.
This will ALWAYS be one of the greatest battle sequences for me. The utter shock I had back in 2006 at 11 when I finally faced Ganon in this form will never compare, I was drowned in EPICNESS!!! 🤣
please!!! you out there, yes i'm talking with you, the person with good mod skills, you could bring Ocarina 3D to the Dark side of the force, it's a good remaster but Grezzo made a poor decision here.
If I knew how to mod the way I would go about it would be to change the lighting and then take the model of Ganon from the N64 version, heighten the poly count and retexture him. That way it's faithful to the original while still fitting in with the 3DS version...
ゼルダシリーズの 3DSリメイク版 と、HD版をすべて Nintendo Switch 向けに移植して作って欲しい と切実に思う。
Funny how Ganon has red blood in the original N64 version in later versions including the 3DS version they changed it to green
The remake is fantastic, although one thing I think the original does better is the lighting; there's nothing necessarily wrong with how the 3DS version handles it, but I love how the darkness of the N64 version obscures Ganon's appearance, making him all the more menacing.
The 3DS version is better throughout most of the whole game UNTIL the final battle. It’s not just the lighting change, but also the character animations and how the AI seems slightly altered in the battle as well.
Don't simp on "graphics".
The n64 version with a graphics pack looks insnely better than the 3ds.
@@Raylightsen This video is literally a graphical comparison and you’re complaining that I’m commenting about the graphical comparison.
@@WindMageMaster The video is not a comparison of graphics.
@@Raylightsen You’re right, it’s a video comparison on everything except graphics. Spot on.
Good god they raped the entire aura and art style in the 3DS, as well as all the censorship
They completely messed up the lighting in the 3DS remake, it's way too bright. The darkness in the N64, combined with the fact that sometimes you could only see his silhouette and glowing eyes with lightning strikes in the background in certain angles really nailed the ambience, which they have lost here.
The 3DS might have more fidelity, and a higher poly count. The atmosphere however doesn't hold a candle to the original though.
The lighting in the 3ds version is total ass. N64 all the way.
This game need a remake with Majora's Mask.
Damn bro I miss the 90's. Gaming was awesome back then.
It feels more awesome because when a new console came out, it was massive increase in graphics and some size/scope of what they could do in a game. Since the PS2 and onward, it's just been incremental improvements. From Atari to NES, from NES to SNES, from SNES to N64, from N64 to GameCube. After that point for the Nintendo, it comes incremental. Fun gimmicks aside, like the Wii.
I like N64 better, Ganon is more hidden in darkness!
That music is still epic.
There's nothing like the quick snare drums to make your heart rush
@@beesmongeese2978 Right?
Even the Emulated N64 fails to makes you feel what was this fight. On OG N64,you can't see Ganon. Only his eyes. The Emulator gives you the ability to see him by brighting the arena
I’m partial to the original.
I think we all are...
The original ocarina is the masterpiece
I finished the game yesterday, for the first time since 1998....I much prefer the N64 version but I hate that the Switch NSO + N64 Expansion Pass has the green blood!!
I remember the first time finally reaching Ganon in his final form. It felt like history was being made in that moment. It is honestly still the best climax in a mainline 3D Zelda game as far as I'm concerned. To a 13 year old kid who had invested so much of his time and emotion into this game, the sense of achievement was overwhelming. They just don't make them like this anymore.
Link and Zelda's human expression feels more realistic in the N64 version
3ds version ruined the atmosphere of this game. If you want to play Oot nowadays, I highly recommend the Ship of Harkanian, the PC port for this game.
I don't know why but this music makes me cry with hate and sadness at the same time
Personally I like Twilight Princess more but Ocarina is still the best game ever made. Still have my gold cartridge.
i love ocarina of time 3D but the N64 does this scene so much better. the over brightening in the remake kills the tone and makes ganon feel much less menacing
the atmosphere and lighting in the original is perfect
This was one of the few things I didn't like about the remake. The shadowy appearance of Ganon in the original made him appear more ominous and threatening.
the 3ds wrecked the dark atmosphere and lightning flashes the og version had. Maybe they did it cuz kids got spooked? who knows.
Still prefer the OG. I don’t mind the 3Ds but if they kept the same ambiance, it would be better in my opinion.
N64 version is waay better IMO, the ambience is just perfect.
It’s been so long since I played this game. I remember thinking the castle collapsing looked way less cheesy as a kid lol. Still a great game, and I wish they’d bring the 3DS port to the Switch.
Remember finding out for the first time that Ganon can run really fast? Absolutely terrfiying, man
But this is not N64 vs 3DS, this is Project64 vs Citra.
I like the remake but the way Link looked in original was so much more serious in his face. The remake gave him a calm kiddy face. Kinda sucks. Also the Ganon scene in the N64 version is so much more black and dark. Only lighting up with the striking of the lightning ⚡️! I had the collector gold cartridge N64 version with the Islamic chant in the fire temple. That will always be my favorite version. As much as I like Breath of the Wild I still love Ocarina of Time so much more! A classic!
They did not need to "update" the graphics of this game to "fit the needs of the modern gamer". What a mess!
Haven't played the 3ds version, refuse to since I'm all about the atmosphere in my games. And I wasn't a fan of the lighting and removal of blood from the 3ds version.
N64 version always gets me hype here. The lighting and music is top notch. I don't think I've ever done this fight without the biggoron sword though. Thankfully I grew up watching my brother play this game.
A true masterpiece the game that rules over all games 😁
I still have my Nintendo 64 I'm now 34 and still no game has come close to this
I would love to see a full remake ☺️
It will happen. I believe it. I give it to the Universe. It’s time bro! OoT Remake will be revealed soon! 🔥😉
For this scene anyway, I prefer the N64 version, darker, more dramatic, really worthy of an ending. Except that the 3DS version being more colorful, I find it less suitable for this scene. Then Ganon in the N64 we see him much more breathless and slower breathing, we feel that it is the end for him. But in the 3Ds his breathing is faster and it seems to go faster so...hmm not a fan for the 3DS. They made it more colorful but frankly the duller version of the N64 gave the game a more serious, gloomy feel.
Im still in awe at how even when the game itself slowed down on the original console with the tvs they had back then the audio stayed synced. One of the draw backs from emulators they cannot seem to replicate that process to slow it down to match.
Intentional/ "Real Lag" Plugins help a lot.
In this fight in particular, the original is way better.
3ds looks so cartoonish. Prefer the OG.
That roar right before the fight just brings back so many memories. The fear of staring up at this monster, lightning flashing, flames surrounding you, the music, the darkness of it all. This was all missing in the remake due to them making it brighter. Even ganons transformation was altered.
It's neat to be able to see, but having a towering beast where it's eyes stick out so vibrantly over the rest of it added so much more than admiring the models detail I feel.
n64 version is so much more brutal
even with inferior graphics
Why does the 3DS version seem worse in every way? Is it just me or is the brightness, color, models and pointless ornate details a case of brainless redrawing of an already good picture in a new less fitting style?
Kids in 2011 would complain that it was too dark to see and Nintendo’s target audience is kids so they have to make it easier so they can be more comfortable
Give me the n64 version anyday
Same
These days nintendo is too worried about their games being easy and less scary. They need too make thier games though and scary like the ones they did in the past
Definitely. Scary/Serious games and ambitious hardware.
from red blood to green blood
The darker tone of the n64 version makes it so much better
Ganon's tail in the 3DS version looks cute 😍🤣 I prefer the N64 version overall! alot darker
Just quickly passed and I've mistaken the thumbnail with EVA from NGE
Both versions are great but the darker atmosphere of the N64 version really set the mood more than the 3DS version. I understand why they had to make the fight more vibrant with the 3DS since, and I admit that I don't know all the details here, the lighting and shading are harder to work with on the 3DS compared to the N64. I hope OoT gets another remake someday on the Switch or even whatever console is after that. Honestly? A remaster would work just fine as well, the 3DS version is so good that, in my opinion, the only real problem (and even this is just a nitpick) are the graphics and lighting/shading.
3DS is to bright
i think them messed up with the light in the 3ds version this fight was supposed to be dark and hard to see ganon
I had the remake and why the n64 had red blood but the 3DS had green blood
thank goodness he used emulator for upscalaing. a lot of these videos dotn do that
N64 for the atmosphere and lighting. 3DS for the graphics.
Still hoping for a 3ds port to switch of these incredible remasters
I like both for different reasons the n64 version is more darker and menacing but I also love the 3ds version cause we can see that cool design more in game
To this day the upscaled gamecube edition is the definitive official version of the game.
I still have that version when I got it along with Wind Waker which was actually a bargain at the time because you get all of this at release
Too bad Majora's Mask can't say the same. Too many random crashes.
I prefer the 3ds remake overall but this is one of the few scenes where the original looks flat out better. The dark atmosphere just works way more.
I didn't know there where extra slots do you need extra or do you just select normally
I wonder if this happened to anyone else as a kid: ‘killed’ Ganon multiple times with biggorron sword, the fight when on for at least 30 minutes. I thought this was the longest battle and strongest creature in video game history, and i thought it was never gonna end. Then I found out I needed to use the master sword
Yeah you can weaken Gannon with any weapon but the second stun animation doesn't trigger unless you use the master sword, and you have to strike the final blow with it, really awesome decision.
Any one else think they should port over all remasters on Switch?
1 second in video. Original is better. Thanks. Bye
I love both a lot, but I prefer the 64 version. The 3ds version was amazing, but I wish the final battle retained the darker setting. It was a little to bright in the 3ds version so it didn’t feel as intimidating
My only quip about the 3DS remake is that they didn't add the lightning and darken the surroundings. It made for a truly harrowing final boss battle, because the atmosphere itself drove home a message of, "This is it: you versus the pinnacle of evil. Good luck."
agreed bro
WHY ARE LINK MOVING IN THE PAUSE SCREEN???
They should make a remake on this one of best zelda title
The amped-up brightness for the 3DS remake kills some of the immersion and atmosphere of Ganon's appearance. Loved the darker shading of the original N64 release enhancing the atmosphere and adding a sense of suspense to the final battle.
3ds version looks way better imo. The dark lighting was nice in the original, but being able to admire the updated ganon model is great
I could barely see his face in the older version, making him much more intimidating. Now I can see his silly pig snout wiggling all around and it's just goofy. The 3DS version of Majora's Mask improved the background effects of the final battle of that one though.
im the only one who thinks the darker n64 version is much better
Still waiting on Nintendo to give this game a proper Remaster/remake
I know. I want them to make a remake but expand the world a little more. Even if it means changing up the temples slightly but still making it the same story line.
Question that's a bit off topic: Where is this being played? The interface looks so cool!
Looks like an emulator
Still prefer the home console version
This is such a beautiful game and I am 10
Please don’t skip the text like that !
Hmmm ToTK Ganon from the mural 🤔
this is the only thing they didn't got right in the 3DS version. It's all too clear and inviting, whereas the 64 is dark and menacing.
Brings back memories for when I played this in Virtual Console
I like how he blinks in the 3DS one like, "Oh shit I got a sword in my head"
I JUST realize in that fight... there was the last skulltula i was missing T.T
