  • The eruption of Mt Vesuvius buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and one ancient library was burned to a crisp. However, scientists are now using machine learning and AI to decipher the writing on them and recover lost works of ancient philosophy.

I think it's sort of gross that this was a massively crowdsourced project, yet the final scanned images are copyrighted instead of being Public Domain. Actually, even if they WERE scanned totally through the work of one person, these are still ancient documents and should be in the Public Domain anyways.

True. Prizes for making an invention public rather than keeping it as a trade secret are underrated. Recall the receipe for Roman concrete was lost and only recent rediscovered, just one example of many.

They can encourage innovation and creativity, but they can also lead people to try and solve it on their own for the money. Working collaboratively with people from different fields is not only faster sometimes, but they prevent each other from making mistakes that can cause harm. This is especially true with a unique or historical object that cannot be replaced. For example, an expert on lasers would be much more successful if a historian helped them fully understand the materials and techniques used to create the item. One good thing, though, is it gives the money to the people doing the actual work, not big corporations.
