It'd help to say WHEN these are useful, as most of these aren't useful to average healthy people:
      1) Creatine for muscle recovery and for improving short burst excercise
      2) Beet Juice to lower blood pressure because it has a lot of nitrates. Though I would be hesitant to regularly drink anything with high nitrate content because it may cause gastrointestinal cancer as sodium nitrite does.
      3) multivitamins and antioxidants ONLY IF you have Macular Degeneration
      4) Folic acid supplements ONLY IF you are pregnant. Otherwise just get it through your food and in fortified cereal
      5) I don't know why melatonin is in this video; he makes a strong case against it, saying that it might increase your sleep by 10 minutes at best.
      6) Please don't take St. John's Wort. It causes your body to produce more Cytochrome P450, a liver enzyme responsible for breaking down any drug present in your bloodstream. Every drug on the shelf bases it's recommended dose on how much Cytochrome P450 is in your body, so when you take St. John's Wort it becomes impossible to know what dose is safe for any other drug you take. For people who take blood pressure tablets like statins, getting the dose wrong can cause fatal heart attacks and strokes. Even if you don't regularly take other drugs, St. John's Wort can still cause lethal paracetamol overdose. Please please just steer clear of this one.

I didn't know delayed sleep phase syndrome was a thing. I've been saying for years that my body thinks it was meant to function on a 28 hour schedule day, not knowing that it might actually be a real disorder. And melatonin does jack for me. The only time in my life I didn't have a problem going to sleep was the few years where I was in constant physical activity on my feet all day long. I have to exhaust myself.

    • @Amy-ff9lw
      @Amy-ff9lw Год назад +7

I know it's been 3 years, but based on your quick description there (if you're still experiencing this), I don't think you have delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), but rather non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder (N24).
DSPS is when your body is consistently wanting to sleep at a different time than is conventional, for example your body refusing to sleep until it's 4am every night, then you can sleep. Which then makes it difficult to get up for a 9-5 job in the morning because you're not getting enough sleep. But it's not having a longer day-night cycle.
N24 is when your body doesn't have a consistent time every day it wants to sleep, but rather it's constantly moving forward or backwards. For example, with what you've said I'm assuming this is the case but it's possible I misinterpreted: you may sleep at 10pm one night, but the next night it's 2am, then 6am, then 10am, and you keep going around and around. People can also be N24 in the other direction (although it's less common) where you sleep at 10pm, the next day 6pm, 2pm, etc. Also it doesn't need to be 4 hours at all, you can be N24 more mildly (like 30m to an hour difference each day, which still adds up), or more severely.

I took St. John's Wort for a month after watching this video, and I am delighted to say that it helped noticeably with my depression, which I had been struggling with for some time, and it actually helped me a little more than the antidepressants I was taking before. Unfortunately, I also take stimulants for ADHD, and after a couple weeks I noticed that they had lost most of their effect. When my test bottle of 30 capsules ran out, I decided not to get more and went back on traditional antidepressants, because the slight increase in mood I got was definitely not worth losing the effects of my ADHD meds.

    • @xNathan2439x
      @xNathan2439x 11 месяцев назад

@@joehefner7529 if you feel energized from adhd medication. that's a good indicator you got misdiagnosed.
I have extremely bad adhd. Got diagnosed 18 years ago. And the strange thing is, if I take Methylphenidate, Amphetamines, or even Caffeine... I don't get stimulation.
Caffeine is the only stimulant I feel "stimulation" on.. but it's less euphoric, and way more of a "tight chest", "sweaty" feeling.. no energy.
The drug I used to use was Ritalin, I have since gotten off it (more because it's too expensive), but when I was on it... Id take it.. and slowly over the next hour it was like someone was talking two ends of a ball of yarn and untangling them.
My thoughts flowed one to the next to the next... Very easily.. no "overlap" of ideas.
If you have "overlap" of ideas while on stimulants, that's actually a default effect of stimulants in NON ADHD individuals. ADHD individuals do not have an increase in hyperactivity due to stimulant consumption. If any individuals dude, treatment options would need to be assessed for this subset of the ADHD population, but that's not something that shows up in testing or treatment. Often it's a direct indicator of a misdiagnosed Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
If you take stimulants and get uncomfortably hyper. Odds are you actually have a misdiagnosed Anxiety Disorder.
If ADHD meds still make you anxious, hyper, and keep that "out of control" of your feelings. You probably need to try out an antianxiety medication (like Prozac) and get off stimulants.
Stimulants don't cause stimulation in ADHD individuals

There are no supplements that are "safe for everyone" or "useless for everyone" or "harmful for everyone." By your logic, we could say that antibiotics are useless and harmful, since they don't work on asthma or fungal infections or psoriasis or OCD. What you're talking about doesn't exist. Medications and supplements work for the people who need them. They don't work for people who don't need them. Please try real hard to remove your head from your ass.
I'm allergic to almonds. Does that mean almonds are "truly useless and/or harmful"? What about psych meds that make people suicidal? Are those "truly useless and/or harmful," or are they useless and/or harmful for CERTAIN PEOPLE who DONT HAVE THE CONDITIONS THOSE MEDS TREAT?

One that this video did not mention that is well researched is magnesium for IBS. My mom thought it might help me and so I started taking it, and it helped worlds. She changed brands for the pills and so I stopped taking it after having taken it regularly for two years (the new pills were sticky and unpleasant), big mistake. I'd thought my IBS was better mostly because of better stress management and hydration, but the magnesium was contributing more than I thought. Not all forms of magnesium absorb well, though, so you have to get the right ones.

Vitamin D is build up by spending time outside in the sun and the body can store it well since it's a fat soluable vitamin.
If you spend some time every day outside you should be fine, which would be possible for most people to achieve.

Well, first of all Vit D is not really a vitamin like others. Vitamin D is the trivial name of Cholecalciferol which is synthesized in our skin. Other Vitamins can't be synthesized in the human.
Without going too much into the biochemics behind it, the body basicaly takes cholesterol and changes it to substances under the trivial names of Vitamin D1, D2 and D3 in different parts of the body. Vit D3 is the stuff normally regerred to just as Vit D.
The last step of this process takes place in the skin and needs UV-Rays to be triggered.
I actually don't know how effective, or even at all, UV-lamps are a possible substitute. But I guess it works, if the right spectrum of light is produced.

It is very important to also note about St John's Wort that it has a high potential of damaging your eye's retina if used longer or in higher doses. Especially when combined with anything but a weak wintery north-European sun in the cold months. It causes permanent damage of the retina so that might be worth stating as well. It helped me go through a rough patch in my life but I wasn't aware of it's strong potential effect on the eyes and how it increased people's sensitivity to sunlight.

Magnesium is definitely vital to a lot of people with anxiety-based disorders and digestive issues. It's probably because we're *actually* deficient in it though. But, blood tests rarely show the deficiency bc Mag in the blood isn't always the same as Mag in the cells. There is a lot of research on it, so I'd say you're good on this one. But, of course, you can overdo it, too.
Also, citrated mag (in capsules, not liquid) s a lot better for getting into the cells. But most supplements on the shelves are just regular Mag. So, it's harder to say.

Just be careful. If you aren’t low on B12 it’s a placebo effect. Your body won’t absorb more than it needs. I went to the doctor because my hands stopped working and pain was getting unbearable-they found out I was a rock bottom B12, probably my whole life, and that the few times I had taken vitamins was what was holding me over the whole time. But when I stopped I functionally crashed. B12 is found in meat, dairy, eggs, and some edible Japanese mosses. My diet is mostly dairy and meat and eggs so it left them confused, as B12 deficiency is most found in vegans and vegetarians. I had to start shots first to raise my levels quickly, and now have to take B12 every day for the rest of my life. They think something is wrong in my stomach, so I don’t absorb it naturally from foods, leaning to the idea of pernicious anemia.

I don't get why you think people who work full time at minimum wage can afford health care when it costs upwards of $200 for a single 10-minute doctor visit, and rent on a tiny death trap apartment costs more than half their income. I mean, people who simply live have to spend money, which winds up in the economy and back in your boss's pocket, which hopefully in some measure gets back into yours. The only difference is that poor people have to spend every penny they receive to survive, and don't hoard the money like folks who make 10 figures a year. The other question is, if someone you loved and had worked hard all their lives suddenly became ill or gravely injured, your comment suggests that you'd just tell them they should have saved up the funds to pay for their treatment and their future care/housing/food, etc. (which could add up to millions of dollars depending on the required treatment and how long they live), but would you actually help them? There was a time when people took care of their neighbors and their elders because the value of others was considered equal (and they knew that when they gave to their neighbors it would come back to them in their hour of need). I take it that, for you, that was a time when America was NOT great.

Yet, no doctor will let me have more than a few months filled at a time because it's 'a controlled substance'. I can walk down the street and get booze and even weed new. Yet, the drug that helps me live better, I have to meet twice a year to have this same stupid conversation.
As a result, I have ran out of my anti-depressants countless times and really caused myself a lot of additional suffering from mood issues. I am so tired of it. So, I'm finally going to test out St. Johns.

Little known fact: vitamin C improves your symptoms because it *pacifies* your immune system, NOT strengthens it. Symptoms are caused by your immune system fighting a pathogen, NOT the pathogen itself. When people are stressed, their immune system starts attacking all kinds of innocuous things. These symptoms are from AN OVERACTIVE IMMUNE SYSTEM, not an underactive one. Vitamin C is a powerful mast cell stabilizer, which is why it pacifies your immune system rather than strengthening it.
Pathogens don't cause symptoms. Your immune system does. Vitamin C reigns in your immune system. That is why it reduces symptoms. There is nothing "placebo" about it. It's just working on an organ that medicine REFUSES TO STUDY (mast cells, the cause of every disorder on the affective spectrum and most forms of mental illness)

A big issue with a lot of supplements (the natural ones more commonly, like St John's Wart) is that they aren't well regulated, nor have many studies been done proving their efficacy. However, vitamins and minerals are more regulated, but not entirely. Either way, before taking anything, do research on the upper limits on vitamins and minerals unless recommended by a doctor or dietician. For example, niacin can come in extremely large doses to try to control cholesterol levels, and should NEVER be taken unless under regular examination by a doctor that recommended it.

Too many supplement companies either dont know what they are doing or dont really care and prioritize money over giving people thinks that are actually good for them.

Remember that serotonin warning when considering SSRI/SSNRI drugs for depression. Major amounts of adverse effects, including seizure-like spasms (and actual seizures), because the body is blocked from consuming serotonin (the intended mechanism), leading to too much serotonin building up. If your body is really good at pursuing homeostasis, it’ll even reduce its own serotonin production, making withdrawal even more miserable when you attempt to get off the drug (fooling you into thinking you’re “relapsing”).

Video briefly hit on and then ignored the main problem. FDA cannot or will not regulate supplements! So consumers don't get what they paid for - or, worse, are poisoned! This happens so often we should all be up in arms.

This guy is by far the best host on this channel. He looks and speaks the part of a true nerd, and those are the only people I trust relating this sort of information. Bravo.

Pregnant people or pregnant woman? Also, Vit D is likely the thing for cancers. Autoimmune repair will fight the cancers.

I had a rough year and was suffering from broken heart syndrome where my heart felt sunken but tight for most of the day and taking saint johns makes that pain non existent even to the point where accidentally skipping a dose seems to make it return. So I suggest this to anybody with broken heart syndrome or anybody who is grieving in general.

I think we use more supplements because most don't have an actual doctor or insurance. Just make sure you google drug interactions if you start taking any supplements. Some may have an adverse reaction with a prescribed med or even a food.
