    It's a shame that paperwork ended up being an issue for submission. I know updates with the fwd eject system to help address reliability issues have been fixed, but a more open fwd eject chute is a great idea for the Civilian market along with the monolithic rail. It would get rid of the complaint people make about not seeing what's going on in the chamber area.

    As someone who was trained on the British SLR/FN and then trialled the SA80 mid eighties, the most important issue with bullpups is the issue of ejection. When we trialed the SA80 in Arctic Norway, I thought we were trialing prototype rifles and we had an extensive list of issues to be sorted. Imagine my surprise the next year when the rifle was issued to RM Units with most of the problems still in place. If an assault rifle is not ambidextrous then it is not truly an assault rifle. You have sorted that issue quite well, so hats off to you! I like the modularity , the weight reduction and I`m sure you will be able to reduce the suppressor length.
    I wish you success !

    It would be pretty cool if you could release this presumably ruggedized MDR version. In 6.8 or just normal .308 and 6.5creed.
    The over the barrel suppressor, the rugged rail (minus electric wizardry), all of that sounds fantastic.
    Also, not having a 80kpsi explosion right in your face, plus having barrel life past 3000 rounds, sounds like a better deal than Sig. Even if the whole marksman rifle against level 4 plates idea of the army is kinda suspect in it's own. But for hunting larger animals, a civilian version would be pretty cool.

      The mcx definitely tweaked every little detail of the ar to perfection now let’s move that action back in bullpup configuration so 20” bbl is the size of a 10.5” ar with actual ergonomics and trigger that on par with aftermarket ar options and still be able to swing the lower /bottom of stock down and you’ve solved a couple more shortcomings mostly getting 20” ballistics in a 28” or less package .
      And I’ve come up with some great ideas for this but nobody will ever pay me for it so I’ll keep it to myself I guess, maybe one day I’ll build the prototype .

    Greetings from Russia! It was very interesting to watch this contest and its unexpected result from the sidelines. An attempt to give an infantryman a rifle with a magnum and a machine gun with a magnum looks really interesting, it is clear that for your conditions and capabilities, the barrel is expendable, as for us magazine). You are talking very sensibly and logically, I also think that this project is stillborn. By the way, we recently introduced a new cartridge and AK, caliber 6 mm, almost a copy of the 6mm Arc, (the case is one from 7.62x39). We have a saying: "Fools have the same thoughts")))

  • @texasranger24
    @texasranger24 6 месяцев назад +82

    Desert Tech should split the MDR family into large and small frame.
    A combat reliable 5.56 (and .300blk) size bullpup. No fancy ejection, no .308 size and weight, no magazine inserts.
    16" and 12" (and 8" 300blk) options. A little less modularity. Just reliable, compact and lightweight. Stronger barrel lockup (plus high temp locktite on the screws) for better accuracy and reliability, even if caliber swaps are slower. Stronger upper (monolithic?) and stronger internals, no mim parts. Stronger charging handle. And give us comfy/ changable cheek pads and maybe swappable AR pistol grips. A micron handguard with suppressor cover.
    Oh, and maybe an improved trigger pack. Maybe even work with Triggertech or Hiperfire. We would absolutely pay for even better (reliable!) triggers.
    And then the big boy rifle for .308, 6.5creed and nowadays 8.6blackout.

    This is a way better option than the XM7. Why? Because of wear and tear. XM7, with the crazy overpressured round simply damages the barrel way too fast. With this rifle, you get a longer barrel, and as such, you can get the same velocity out of it as with the shorter barreked XM7. This is a huge deal as the barrel and all the important components will last much longer, saving money for the user.

      For the military all non serialized parts on small arms are considered a consumable if necessary. And realistically in a combat situation you aren't going have to worry all that much as you shouldn't be in a situation where you would shoot the amount of ammo needed to cause a catastrophic failure before an armorer would get their hands on the small arm and deem it needing repairs.
      For civilians like myself that over pressured shite is worthless when equivalent or better performance is available without needing the fancy cases.

      I think the modular handguard is still a viable approach if it didn't rely entirely on the friction of T-nuts to keep it in place (the take down pin tolerance leaves a lot of play which it can shift in when the rifle goes through normal use). Something self-indexing like an indexing pin/extrusion or taper interface would let it hold and repeat zero and something toolless like a cam lever instead of countersink bolts would add a lot of value to it. LaRue's handguard lockup on their OBR and Siete rifles are a good example of what I'm thinking of and take a similar footprint to the current mounts.

    This is the most promising conversation I’ve seen on US small arms in 50 years, and I don’t say that lightly. NGSW is an abortion when it comes to trying to mass-issue that AR-10 carbine to 11Bs, 12Bs, 13Fs, and everyone that normally carries an M4A1 in the Infantry right now. It’s just a non-starter when you go down the duty position list in an Infantry Company. It’s even too heavy with too much sight picture disturbance for DMs in my opinion. I want minimal sight picture movement during the shot, so I can track the impact cleanly and get great follow-ups, without need of a spotter. The small frame AR-15 is where it’s at in that respect, but with some significant updates.

    Defeating body armor plates at distance is just not the goal to center an infantry cartridge around. The entire NGSW program is misguided, it's based on doctrine which was soundly refuted in the 60's, and if the army does anything with this other than replace .308 then they're making an unforced error which will cost lives and treasure.
    If they want to replace 5.56 then going much larger in any dimension is probably a mistake, departing from the .378 bolt face is probably a mistake, and dropping the AR platform is probably a mistake. Other than that it's a great idea! Take something like BC Precision's 6mm max, work the polymer case shenanigans on it, quad-stack them; job done...and job done cheaply!
    EDIT: Just watched to the end, I'm surprised we agree to that extent.

      proof is in the pudding right now on the battlefields of Ukraine. And surprise surprise, there are still waaaay more casualties on battlefield made with artillery and explosion/shrapnel than with individual arms. individual marksmanship - to hell with it. when you watch war fottage, there are two types of trench fighting you can see: they are either firing in general direction of the nemy that you can't even see or you shooting a guy in a trench 3 feet from you. at that distance a burst of 5.45/5.56 does just as well as 6.8. Same argument as in the 30-40s 9mm sub-gun vs full-size battle rifle. equation still the same. point blank if enemy already in the trench or on tope of you OR in general direction if they are still not. Oh, and one thing nobody ever thought of - FPV drones. now going even after individual combatants. The more i think about it the more i agree with 6.8/spear as cartridge/platform was the dumbest goalpost and conclusion since m14/.308 adoption.

    I think that the US Army has made a colossal mistake by not standardizing the 6.8 caliber before asking companies to submit their prototypes for the NGSW-AR and the NGSW-R programs. They should've done like the Soviets did in the mid 1940s, create a cartridge specifically fit for their needs and after arriving at a final design, ask each company to submit their own weapons instead of creating a fruit salad of different guns and cartridges.

    • @andrewsuryali8540
      @andrewsuryali8540 6 месяцев назад +3

      Historically the Soviets did the exact same thing with (IIRC) three different cartridges and five different guns before they settled on 7.62x39. On top of this they also then dumped all five original guns they tried and told everyone to start making new guns around the new cartridge they selected. The US Army program is just a heck of a lot less efficient because they don't have the pressure of WW2 bearing down on them and they don't have communism's disregard for IP (all Soviet designers were told to freely "borrow" elements of their rivals' proposals).

    • @nemisous83
      @nemisous83 6 месяцев назад

      Id argue this was actually better for the trial as it allowed the army to evaluate different designs without having to invest their own money into developing a new cartridge. Polymer cased ammo is just not worth it due to the problems we are seeing with true velocity and PCP ammo. The only other viable candidate was the Textron submission with it's careless ammo which had a lot of development behind it by the Army however that design was plagued with issues. The Spear was definitely the most sensible candidate because it was a conventional design and utilizes mostly M4 controls and battery of arms which saves the Army money on retraining soldiers.

    The ideas that this had me thinking about ended up being a massive wall of text, mostly involving materials science, coatings, and techniques to reduce weight and keep strength. One part that I would add to the suggested weapon system is Finite Element Analisys ( FEA). FEA uses some very complex math to allow for the strategic removal of material from something to get the maximum strength-to-weight ratio. Very expensive software, more CNC time, but a performance gain that has no moving parts, no need for brain power from the end user, and it just keeps working.

    One of the things you quickly learn about firearms design and design in general is that there are materials you could use to reduce weight, increase strength, etc. They just cost a tremendous amount. Titanium components, carbon fiber, etc. The real mastery of end-product design is getting it done with what's commonly available. A few innovations integrated into established concepts and designs can net significant improvements to functionality and usability without breaking the bank, and accomplishing that kind of balance of innovation and practical, affordable materials is no small task. I'm not only impressed, I'm inspired by some of the choices and ideas you're working with. While I'm not an expert in firearms design (merely an informed enthusiast) I am a conceptual artist that tries to give serious credence to ergonomics, material, and believable, practical design. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and perspective, and I look forward to seeing what you folks come up with next!
