I saw Van Morrison live at Ronnie Scott's in London many years ago, he's one of the most engaging performer's I have ever seen. He feels every word, every note of every song. Its magical.

Many years ago, an older friend of mine invited me over to have dinner with him and his wife. He told me he would teach me about what he considered real music. Being a young dope under twenty, I said sure, Kevin. When I arrived, he and his wife put on a Van Morrison album, and class began. That may have been when I realized older people, including my parents and grandparents, had opinions and life lessons worth listening to.
Lots of people come to the realization that as you age you gain wisdom and knowledge. At 19 you seem to have come to appreciate it earlier than most of us. Perhaps you were more receptive since he was a friend and not a parental figure. Also your friend gave you a gift of and an appreciation Van's beautiful music. A good friend of mine turned me on to Van over 50 years ago and I appreciate it to this day. He recently passed and never got to thank him for it.

I was born in 1975. When my parents first met, they used to listen to Van Morrison and Beatles records together at his house in Laurel Canyon as a date! They were in their twenties, not teens, but to them, this was the cutting edge hip music of the time :) I love to think of them experiencing that time.

I had so many friends that knew every one of their songs and I only ever knew their hits for some reason. But I even covered Brown Eyed Girl in my Honky Tonk band to Great audience response. As far as holding your lighter up? It didn't really have to do with any one specific thing. It had to do with greatness. If the majority of the people in the crowd felt like they were witnessing an incredibly wonderful or important moment together, that's when you brought out the lighters. And you had to be very judicious because there was only so much butane in any given lighter and it would run out. And if you were like me and used your pocket knife to damage it, that would make it flame out like a 3 ft flame in the air. But it wouldn't last very long at all. So it really is just a sign of respect for a great moment that everyone is sharing together.
