The Band was incredible. This is from their final concert before they disbanded. Martin Scorsese filmed the concert and made it into the movie, The Last Waltz. It's probably the best concert movie ever. They had an incredible line up of friends joining them on stage to say farewell including The Staple Singers, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and more. The Band was extremely influential and considered one of the greatest rock bands ever. Definitely check out King Harvest (Has Surely Come), their funkiest song, and Chest Fever, with amazing organ from Garth Hudson. The Band is absolutely one of the best!
The videography of the Staples was some of the best, if not the best, I have ever seen! How euphoric, but then again one would expect something like this when Martin Scorsese is involved. What a callaboration of these two bands, so, so, so good!
Brad & Lex, you'll love The Staples Singers "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself"!!! At 80 years old, Mavis Staples performed "Purple Rain" at a Prince tribute, and she killed it!!
The BAND will always take you to Church. The Weight is a beautiful song about loss and redemption. I named my dog Jack in honor of the lyric "I will fix your rack if you'll take Jack my dog..wait a minute Chester you know I'm a peaceful man. That's ok he said won't you feed him when you can."
Crazy Chester was an actual person from here in Fayetteville, Arkansas. :) The Band had roots here in Arkansas, with Levon Helm born in Elaine, Arkansas. Musician Ronnie Hawkins, from the Huntsville, Arkansas area, brought members of what was to become the Band into his band, The Hawks.
@@ozarkchief7 That is amazing to know! Thank you so much for telling me about the history of The Weight. The song is so visceral. It resonates on every level of consciousness.
Funny how The Band was all Canadians except for the drummer Levon Helm who was the only American!! You’d swear they were all from the south the way they sounded !! 😂
One of my absolute favorite songs of all time. Just can't get enough of The Band. The drummer Levon Helm is one of greatest singers-drummers of all time. The band is actually from Canada other than Levon. He's from Arkansas. The Staples just brings in more power and emotion from this concert. I think this song is about encouraging people to share “the weight” of life’s issues with each other, with friends and loved ones, because the weight is lighter if it’s shared.
The Bible was something taught and learned by everyone back in the day, so there are soooo many Bible principles that got put into everything, media, music, u name it. "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2
The Band-which started out as a backing group for the rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins in the late nineteen-fifties, performed with Bob Dylan on his groundbreaking 1966 tour, and then set off on its own two years later
That is the incomparable Mavis Staples with her sisters, Cleotha and Pervis and their dad Roebuck "Pops" Staples. This is the best rendition of this song and the one I always hear in my head. The Band performed it on SNL eons ago with Levon Helm handling all the verses.
The Staples did their thing and The Band always did too! POPS and his daughters (featuring Mavis) of course are worth a venture into their own solo works! Great tune and or request...
A friend of mind claimed he knew the Staples Singers. In 1973 they were in a concert at Fenway Park. After the concert we hung around to see the performers leave. When the Staple Singers came out, the immediately recognized my friend and came over to chat. I must've been in shock since I barely remember what happened. This kid was only 19 and knew lots of well known people. He wasn't just bragging or telling tall tales.
The video is a piece of a larger concert film, "The Last Waltz", filmed in 1976. It had The Band performing with several different artists including Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. It's a Thanksgiving tradition where I'm from.
How appropriate. You probably already know those in attendance were served a Thanksgiving dinner before the show. All for the princely some (for the time) of $25. ✌&🎶
There is a 50th anniversary version of this song by Playing For Change … musicians from all over the world coming together and singing one song. Super cool.
You should check out the "Playing for Change" version from a couple of years ago. It has Robbie Robertson and Ringo Starr playing this song with musicians from all over the world and it's just amazing.
I love Levon Helm's singing. His voice is great. That accent tho kills me. He spoke the way my older Arkansas relatives did. I don't know if it exists anymore, haven't heard it in years in spite of trips to the state. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is amazing, so is his cover of Atlantic City.
That's just a little impromptu jam session at the end with Manuel, Danko and Robertson singing an old gospel tune "Old time religion". Ya'll need to do more of The Band. Also some Staples singers, they're both awesome.
I love this version! It still gives me chills. The Staples family sound amazing! If I could go back in time to see 3 concerts, this and Otis Redding at Monterey would be required to see. Thanx for reacting to this! 🤙
It's a band called "The Band" playing "with" The Staples. (sorry if you already knew that). Every song in the film that song came from, The Last Waltz, is worth reacting to.
Absolutely without doubt the most musically talented of ANY group in history with each and every member proficient in several instruments. The drummer Levon Helm was actually the only American in the group with all the other members being from Canada. They played for years backing Ronnie Hawkins and then were Bob Dylans band for several years. Everyone simply referred to the members as "The Band" .........you HAVE to watch The Last Waltz. It is like an audible and visual history of American music.
The Staples & The Band are a perfect mix for me. I loved them both and listened to them plenty in my younger days, but together, they're sweeter-n-Tupelo Honey! 🙂♥
Mavis Staples is a 5' 0" dynamo of vocal talent!! While this was not performed on the stage at Winterland, this collaboration is one of the greatest ever.✌🏼✌🏼💯
The Weight was written in1968 ,yes that's right 54 years ago ,and is as fresh today as it ever was ! This version was recorded after the Last Waltz ,which was 46 years ago and is still magnificent ! The Band and the Staple singers .... Groundbreaking art at its most majestic.....
Everybody still covers this song. Yes you must watch The Last Waltz. The drummer Levon Helm is one of the seminal artist of the 20th century and one of the finest human beings ever. So is Mavis Staples. She said she had a massive crush on Robbie Robertson (guitar player) in that video. If you watch closely she whispers "beautiful" at the very end of the song, she said she was talking about Robbie.
Her name was Fanny. "The lyrics, written in the first-person, are about a traveler's experiences arriving, visiting, and departing a town called Nazareth, in which the traveler’s friend, Fanny, has asked him to look up some of her friends. According to Robertson, Fanny is based on Frances "Fanny" Steloff, the founder of a New York City bookstore where he explored scripts by Buñuel. [14] The town is based on Nazareth, Pennsylvania, because it was the home of Martin Guitars. Robertson wrote the guitar parts on a 1951 Martin D-28.[13][14] The singers, led by Helm, vocalize the traveler's encounters with people in the town from the perspective of a Bible Belt American Southerner,[15] like Helm himself, a native of rural Arkansas."
This is why I love music so much. I never new the story behind the lyrics but for probably 40 years I had my own interpretation. Fanny simply meaning your butt. And a stranger just seeing you you may need a little help and offering to take a load off
I am a huge, huge fan of The Band (I saw them a few times live as well). But when Mavis Staples comes for this last recording together I still get goosebumps.
The Staples were fantastic as were The Band but the voice of Mavis Staples is a unique forceful quality voice . I got to see her live when she was on tour with Elton John back in 2011
9 people in this video and only 3 are still alive - guitarist Robbie Robertson 79 y/o, keyboard/sax player Garth Hudson 85 y/o (barely shown in the video, he is on the far, far left) and one of the Staple sisters - Mavis 83 y/o. The amazing thing is that all 3 of them still perform (but not together).
The shape I'm in is my fav band song ! They were called the band because when they opened they would say I'd the band here and they took the name the band
the song is about a trip to nazareth, pennsylvania, the home of martin guitars. the staples (also known as the staple singers) were indeed a separate band, who did such songs as 'respect yourself' and 'i'll take you there'.
The Staple Singers were primarily a gospel group consisting of Roebuck "Pop" Staples and his three daughters. Mavis carried most of the vocal load among the sisters and is still performing. The Band are 4 Canadian musicians and Levon Helm playing the drums and singing. They got their big break when they became Bob Dylan's band when he "went electric". This performance is from the documentary "The Last Waltz" commemorating their last time performing as the Band. They invited people who had influenced them throughout the years to join them on stage. Fortunately there was a glitch either the recording of this song live at the show or in even getting the Staples to be there. In either case, Martin Scorsese, who directed the whole thing, wanted the Staples and the Band in the documentary and got them together in a studio with this masterpiece being the result.
The Staples Singers, aka, The Staples Family, were a Gospel/R&B/Soul singing group started by Roebuck 'Pops' Staples and his children Cleotha, Pervis, May and Mavis.
The Staples Singers are one of the best roots-soul-R&B bands around - led by Pops Staples and featuring his daughters. Their combination with the Band in this track is magical. "The Last Waltz" is one of the greatest music movies ever made. Part interview, part behind the scenes, but mostly fantastic music performances by the Band and a heap of their musical friends. So much good. Do yourself a favour and watch the whole thing.
I remember I was about 14 in 19971 walking around the Haight Ashbury humming the chorus of this song. I didn't know the title until 2000. I love this song especially with the combination of talent both the Band and the Staple Singers.
A song that's irresistible, to sing along to. This is a call, to share The Weight, by joining with others...a call, for collaboration. It's a fantastic collaboration, so they're leading, by example. The people, who were inspired by Jack Kerouac, to go out, "On The Road", searching for truth, beyond the white picket fences (that may represent wedges between people), had found that there's a lot of emotion, tied to leaving loved ones behind; and then there's the journey, with its pitfalls, basically a rollercoaster of unknown outcomes. Through, facing hurdles, with others who were on their path, they learn valuable lessons, of an experiential nature. (i.e. Though one may have resiliency, in an individual reservoir, when we join with others, there can be more momentum, and inspiration, and sense of purpose, and belonging, due to feedback). In the end, the ride of unknowns, feeds a longing to return to solace, and realization, that it's time for a restoration. That's my take, on this song, at least. The Staples were singing Gospel, and Soul, and the whole country needed, that deep down healing. The Oscar Winning Documentary of the year, "Summer Of Soul", from Director Questlove, of The Roots fame, features a bit of The Staples. Mavis Staples, singing alongside Mahalia Jackson, is not only a piece of music history, it is a piece of the human story. Mavis, literally, takes the load. I think, it's a shining example, of what humans can do for each other, when they respond with empathy. We're all entangled, so it's in our interest, to keep all boats above water. Forward, Humanity! Forward!
Silver dollar city, laugh. Oh my God man this band is so cool and was so beloved. This song and very many others we're just so catchy and became so well known. I swear to God, even nowadays, with people my age and even 20 years younger, you go to a bonfire or a front porch Jam or out in the shed and back for a jam or anything like that, and there are about 30 or 40 songs that are extremely likely to pop up that enough people know that you can just start strumming your acoustic guitars and whatever else to it and then everybody sings it and everybody knows the words. This is one of those. Another huge hit for them that is so beloved is called up on cripple creek. And then another one is The Night They Drove Old Dixie down. It's just so emotional and so memorable it just sticks in your mind. Ophelia was another popular one by them.
thats from a movie made of the last concert the band ever had so thats why theres that clip at the end. its really good theres alot of famous artists from that time at that concert with them as guests appearances.
The Staple singers were well known as gospel singers. They did have a cross over song called I'll Take You There that is really good and was played on mainstream radio as well as this song.
On the 50th year anniversary 'Playing For Change' organization performed the song with performers from around the world including Guitarist Robbie Robertson from The Band.
Beautifully shot - two artists that you might not be thinking about when watching / listening to this are Martin Scorsese and Michael Chapman (cinematographer).
"The Last Waltz" is one of the prizes of my Blu-Ray DVD collection, it is so good from beginning to end, you are never ever bored or distracted, you just want more. The segment with The Band and The Staples Singers is one of the best parts, but then, they're all great. Mavis and Pops Staples, I don't know his real name, are the leaders of the family group who do a lot of Gospel in their performances, and the boys in The Band who have solo verses, Drummer Levon Helm and Bassist Rick Danko (RIP), can sing most anything you put in front of them. Guitarist/Lead Singer Robbie Robertson, who did not take a solo verse, wrote the song. In the first verse he was looking for a town name, and looked inside his C.F. Martin guitar and saw Nazareth, Pa,, and that was that. Hello from the Lehigh Valley, Pa.
@@BobSoltis1 Very very true. But he was the sort of recognized "leader or face" of the band, so I just put him down as Lead Vocalist, but all of them, except maybe Garth Hudson did some great singing. Rick, Levon and Richard. RIP to all of them.
The term "take a load off" is slang for taking a break, be it from work or life. Each person was being helped (or needed a load lifted) in this song somehow.
It's a shame the members of the Band have all passed on. Fantastic video the Last Waltz ,the Staples Family are smooth. Bob Dylan recorded with them early on. Some of my favorites, thanks y'all.
The Staples were a gospel group invited to help sing their song. At the end that was a take of them backstage higher than a Georgia Pine singing a gospel hymn.
LEX, I have noticed you REALLY FEEL THE BLUES when you listen to music, if you get a chance look up Justin Johnson, I thing you will really dig his stuff. no words, its all mostly instrumental. but he has some amazing slide guitar that will liquefy you!!
There are 100 versions of this song, which is over 50 years old now. This performance from 1976 is probably the definitive version. According to Robbie, the writer, when The Staple Singers agreed to do this, Pops Staples insisted only if he could sing the verse he sang.
Me and wifey saw The Last Waltz concert movie when it came out on Cinemas ❤️😎🇧🇻. And before that i got the vinyls of Bob Dylan with The Band as back up band. I was a huge Dylan fan back then 😋❤️🇧🇻

Forward!
My all time fave song by my all time fave band.
The Band and the Staples - easily one of the top 20 love performances ever
The Band are the best. Great reaction. More of the Band Please. “Acadian Driftwood” is a good one. Thanks
An immortal piece of music...brilliant...
The Band and The Grateful Dead are probably the most underrated bands of the 20th century . . . .
Underrated by who????
On the 50th year anniversary 'Playing For Change' organization performed the song with performers from around the world including Guitarist Robbie Robertson from The Band.
Beautifully shot - two artists that you might not be thinking about when watching / listening to this are Martin Scorsese and Michael Chapman (cinematographer).
Great Song and this team up was one of the best. Now you gotta do the studio version!!!
...and yes, it's "Take a load off Fanny"
Franny as in Fran
@@mandandanmandamayor3511Nope it’s definitely Fanny.
Robertson was never the "lead" singer. Manual, Danko, and Helm did the singing in The Band.
@@BobSoltis1 Very very true. But he was the sort of recognized "leader or face" of the band, so I just put him down as Lead Vocalist, but all of them, except maybe Garth Hudson did some great singing. Rick, Levon and Richard. RIP to all of them.
@@bobschenkel7921 I see where you are coming from. :)
The Staples were a separate group...they wer Awesome!!
Oh, my goodness!! LOVE, Mavis Staples and the Staple Singers! Listen to "I'll Take You There", if you haven't already.
That’s news to Garth and Robbie.
That will come as a surprise to Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson. ;)
Amazing group
The Staples were a gospel group invited to help sing their song.
At the end that was a take of them backstage higher than a Georgia Pine singing a gospel hymn.
I LOVE the staple singers -- always have -- they have SO MANY great songs
LEX, I have noticed you REALLY FEEL THE BLUES when you listen to music, if you get a chance look up Justin Johnson, I thing you will really dig his stuff. no words, its all mostly instrumental. but he has some amazing slide guitar that will liquefy you!!
Glad you got to this one. The Staples are simply amazing!!!
I was a huge Dylan fan back then 😋❤️🇧🇻
Only saw them live once, as Dylan's backup band in Chicago, Jan. '74.
Think they were still known as "the hawks" then.
Wow, never seen this version before. The Staples really add to it. Beautiful rendition!
The Band is one of the all time greats, and Mavis Staples is a national treasure
They got their name because they were Bob D's backing band. Check out "It Makes No Difference"; by far my favorite song by The Band.
Robbie learned to play guitar on the reservation in Canada so many great tunes from the band.
What a performance. A neglected gem by the Band is "The Rumor" . Wait! Forgot I love Mavis Staples. Yep. Levi (drum)and Rick Danko (bass) are joined by Richard Manuel (piano) on The Rumor. Thanks. Glad you dig it!
I feel like Crazy Chester all over again thanks for a great reminder and another great reaction!
Damn ! Never heard this version. The Staples are you fucking kidding me! YES!
The Staples were famous. Amazing!
The Band. Untouchable perhaps?
Check out The Band with Dr. John - 'Such a Night' also from The Last Waltz concert - you won't regret it.
Dr. John is also incredible and quite unique.
The Band greatest hits album is one of my favorite greatest hits albums.
Beautiful harmonies!🔥👑💝
