The entirety of The Last Waltz is phenomenal, but this tune, The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down, Caravan featuring Van Morrison, and It Makes No Difference are the true priceless gems.
It's on something better than 4K, FILM. This was directed by Martin Scorscese, an Academy Award winning director, so it should look real good. And the musicians are all pretty good too .Understatement of the week.
Yep. 35 film effectively has infinite resolution. Check out the old original Star Trek episodes when they air. You can see every pore of their faces on the close-ups. We had better than 4K back in the sixties. I will not speak of VTR or VHS though.
Concert was in 1976. You have opened up something really special with these guys. A lot of good music. This was actually their farewell concert, well sort of. Check out their version of “Long Black Veil”. It’s hard to describe their music, it’s kind of like backwoods soulful rocky funk.
No Auto Tune, no Pro Tools... just music. The ladies and older gentleman singing are the Staples Singers. Try "I'll Take You There" by them. Fantastic music.
The original record came out in 1968, but this is from The Last Waltz, a 1978 documentary centered around The Band's last performance and directed by Martin Scorsese. There's a terrific version of this song from Playing for Change which features Robbie Robertson (composer and lead guitarist) and Ringo Starr. Other Band greats: Ophelia, Stage Fright, Up on Cripple Creek.
This is from The Last Waltz, 1978. The Band’s last performance after 15 years touring together. The Band were also Bob Dylan’s band. The Staple Singers are Stax legends. Their lead singer Mavis Staples is 82 and she’s still performing.
This is from the movie "The Last Waltz" directed by Martin Scorsese, which recorded a 4 days of Concerts to mark the official last performances of The Band and edited them down to one movie. So many great musicians joined them for song after song and this one has the magic and soul of the Staples Singers. The entire movie is well worth watching. I have watched this particular video so many times and I never tire of it. Sheer joy and perfection.
This was 1976.I was 7 years old but have had a very long love of The Band and the Staple Singers.Mavis Staple was incomparable. Nobody could even come close
The Band, the white guys, sung this at Woodstock, but this is from a movie about the breakup of The Band, and they collabed with different artists playing their own hit songs!!
When my father passed away every member of my family picked a song to play at his funeral. This is the song I chose. It still hits in the feels every time I hear it.
I couldn’t care less about what RS magazine thinks or says about anything. This performance of this song is probably a top ten song of the era. Brilliant. Flawless. Genius. And those adjectives don’t do this performance justice. B
This was made in the 70's. My daddy introduced me to the Band. They're one of the greats and I'll always think of him when I hear their music. I miss my daddy so much but he loved some awesome music and this is just some of it :)
Arguably the greatest collaboration between bands in the history of American(and Canadian) music. The fact that it also transcends race makes it even more poignant. The icing on the cake? This young man's reaction!
Double neck...not head. The Band enough said...😎👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 How good are the Stapes!!!! Mid 70’s the last waltz...it was there farewell concert. They had a ton of artists join them. You should watch the whole thing.
The Last Waltz is one of music's greatest gifts; a concert chocked end to end with some of the best performances ever recorded by some of music's biggest stars, caught on film by a master film maker to preserve it for all time. "The Weight" is an utter classic but would you believe there's easily a half a dozen other tracks that are at least as good? "Stagefright" "It Makes No Difference" "Further On Up The Road" "Caravan" for starters!
Yes, this is older. The sad thing is that, out of the 9 people appearing here only 3 are still alive. Mavis is the last of the Staple Singers and Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson are the only members of The Band remaining.
Watch the whole thing. Pure awesomeness. When they realised that they'd done every drug going, but not alcohol! Hey man, this is good stuff!!! Pop Staples is always my favourite part
The backstage recording of Old Time Religion is something really special. Man, what I wouldn't give to have recordings of The Band, Dylan, or some of the other greats performing and screwing around backstage or after hours in the studio.
It was the 70's in NJ when I first heard and say this. . I remember. Graduated high school in 77. My older brother in 69. Watching PBS to see if his number came up. Kids have no clue. The Last Waltz, IMHO is Easily ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS EVER RECORDED, IF NOT "THE" BEST. I DARE YOU TO CONVINCE ME DIFFERENT. But honestly, watch the "FILM" THE MOVIE, from beginning to end. It was an "EVENT". More than half these people are gone now!🙁😐🙁 Damn good performances!
The MAJESTIC Mavis Staples!!! Still going strong today! Martin Scorsese filmed this in his movie “ The Last Waltz”. It was about The Band’s farewell concert in the late 70’s. With Mavis are her siblings and Dad- Pops Staples.
It's a pretty good Sunday. We doin' good today, Bahv' ,(Comanche NDN slang, short for the words ; little brother- Bah-vy, usually used as a reference to, friend). Great song, It's raining, here in Oklahoma. Have a good afternoon.
Song hit the radio airwaves in late 1960s. This was filmed in 1976 as part of the Last Waltz. The Band's farewell show at Winterland had all of their musical friends and partners from over the years. Martin Scorsese directed it.
This is from the film "The last waltz" filmed on 35 millimeter film- way before all the ks and the hd. Directed by martin Scorcese- depicts the Band, the house they lived in at Woodstock. A great great documentary
They weren't called THE Band for nothin' ;o). Every player there is top 10 all time on their instrument. An immensely musically talented collection of musicians.
THE BAND,"LAST WALTZ".. WOULD BE WONDERFUL IF YOU CHOSE TO WATCH THIS CONCERT.. FROM THE 70'S. THE BAND'S FINAL CONCERT.. WATCHED THIS ON SHOWTIME BACK IN THE DAY WHEN MUSIC WAS OUR MEDIA...
This what it was like fir us in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Music brought us all together. It was during this time many of nonferrous saw black and white but just friends. Just we really pushed hard to put the hatred and pain of the past behind us. Music truly brought us together. Many in power do not want us xaribg fir each other and do all they can to teR us apart. We are all God's children. Oh one more thing... no one had auto tune
Mid 1970s. Almost all of the members of "The Band" are dead, and the only remaining "Staple Singer" is Mavis Staple. Papa Staple died a few years after this performance.
Two highly respected groups here. This was shot on film for a movie. You should hear the Staples singers do 'Respect Yourself' or 'I'll Take You There'. I don't know how Rick Danko could play bass like that. All that jerking around.
The Band were an incredibly talented and unique band. Each member and multi-instrumentalist, all but one sang. Their approach to music inspired many. Eric Clapton said that when he left Cream, he came to america with full intention of joining The Band....of course they had never asked him, and he had never told them ;O). but they did hang out, and Clapton's music went from the 15 minute insane jams of Cream to a more rootsy, song-based approach. The Last Waltz was a farewell concert by The Band where many of the biggest names in music came and payed tribute. IT was held on Thanksgiving day 1975...and all attendees were fed a full Thanksgiving meal. who does that ????? This performance (and Emmylou Harris' performance) were filmed on a soundstage after the concert. the film is MUST SEE if for music/rock n roll fans. historic...
They had 3 great singers, Levon Helm, RIchard Manuel and last but not least in my book Rick Danko. Robbie Robertson wrote most of the songs and sang harmoney. Garth Hudson was a genious, but did not sing.
Isn't it wonderful to be able to revisit such classic gatherings and share these moments of true musical artistry . Thnx to RUclips and reactors like yourself we can.
the film that this came from was THE LAST WALTZ back in i think 1975 or early 1976 it is one if not the best movie about music and THE BANDS farewell it is loaded full of the best talent of the time it just lifts your spirit up and leaves you in a better place no wonder the great eric clapton wanted to join the band robbie robertson is one of the greatest musical gifts from canada to the world as is all the rest of this amazing band
Listen Man! Listen shirts here!

Great design! Love the new merch, my man! Keep it coming!

This is an excerpt from the documentary The Last Waltz directed by Martin Scorsese 1978.
Rick Danko , bass and fiddle and singing deserves huge respect. Crazy Chester has always been my favourite part of this song.
Mine too.
Same👍
Danko has always just whats made The Band special. Helm and Robertson are amazing as is everyone but Danko is like having a ringer. He's elite.
Four Canadians and one American ( Levon Helm) drummer. They made wonderful music together. R.I.P. Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel
...and...sadly...now Robbie
Pop Staples was one The Bands' heroes. This was one master recognizing when another group was the real fracking thing.
THE STAPLES SINGERS "I'LL TAKE YOU THERE" & "RESPECT YOURSELF"..CLASSICS..TRUTH!!
Also, on YT check out the Staples at Wattstax singing "When Will We Be Paid". Mavis is extraordinary here.
@@deirdre108 Also "Uncloudy Day"
@@happymethehappyone8300 Yes! Another Staple Singers fan, I see.
Levon Helm ❤️🇺🇸 The Staples ❤️ The Band 🇨🇦❤️
Yes! Yes! Yes!
This song is better than the entire body of hip hop music.
Amen .
@@stevenhrumph5565 I guess we should be thankful we grew up in the golden age.
I'm thinking Pops Staples would agree.

Filmed in ‘76 for the film “ The Last Waltz” which concluded The Band’s 16 year career on the road.
As huge fans , The Band had early Staple Singers records ...that even they did not have ,such was the enormous admiration they had for them .
No Auto Tune, no Pro Tools... just music. The ladies and older gentleman singing are the Staples Singers. Try "I'll Take You There" by them. Fantastic music.
Mavis Staples..What a Voice !!!

YES. The Playing for Change version deserves its own reaction.
More ppl should react to this. Fckin beautiful
*The Band with The Staple Singers...RIP The Band & RIP Mr. Staple*
That's when LIVE music was LIVE without any electronic trickery used today. Just pure talent and passion.
What they did is let each band member shine with the different songs
They don't make em like this anymore Real music Real musicianship 🎶
Uniting The Band and The Staples was a BRILLIANT idea! Love, love, love this performance! Mavis and Pops gave us some amazing vocals.
All the "Music From Big Pink" album is amaizing, The Band was the Bob Dylan's Band when he left the acoustic guitar for a while
This is from The Last Waltz, 1978. The Band’s last performance after 15 years touring together. The Band were also Bob Dylan’s band. The Staple Singers are Stax legends. Their lead singer Mavis Staples is 82 and she’s still performing.
al 3 of the Staples women are drop dead gorgeous.

It is the GREATEST LIVE SONG PERFORMANCE EVER. #1.
This was 1976.I was 7 years old but have had a very long love of The Band and the Staple Singers.Mavis Staple was incomparable. Nobody could even come close
That Old Time Religion they were just fooling around, and they were stoned, but hilarious. Love Rick the guy singing.
The band fucking rules. One of the best songs ever
this was 1978 during their concert film... the staples added that extra to it that gave it more soul
The movie The Last Waltz came out in 78, the concert itself was on Thanksgiving Day 1975 at Winterland San Francisco.
LORD have mercy, one of the prettiest songs ever. Lord have mercy, wow. Man just brings so much joy to my heart. God bless you.
God bless you my friend. Love your heart felt joy in listening to this beautiful classic. Thank you.
"Up On Cripple Creek" is a massive Band tune.
I was 20 yrs old when The Last Waltz came out, the Scorsese Directed last appearance of The Band. Haze, your response did not surprise me.
The year is 1976 and the film is so good because it was shot by Martin Scorsese and the genius master of photography lazlo Kovacs 👍
Rolling Stone has named this as one of the top 50 recordings of all time
I couldn’t care less about what RS magazine thinks or says about anything. This performance of this song is probably a top ten song of the era. Brilliant. Flawless. Genius. And those adjectives don’t do this performance justice. B
One of the finest and most talented bunch of musicians in music history ,put together with the incredible staple singers and it produces pure fire 🔥
This was made in the 70's. My daddy introduced me to the Band. They're one of the greats and I'll always think of him when I hear their music. I miss my daddy so much but he loved some awesome music and this is just some of it :)
The backstage "Old Time Religion" is the best impromptu performance of ANY song I've ever heard.
My favourite piece of music actually.
It is truly NEXT LEVEL
5 of the greatest minutes of music ever committed to film (yes, actual FILM!) Every second of this performance is pure gold.
The Last Waltz 1976! Anything from that concert is great!
Dude, Bro great song and reaction. You got to do The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down from the same concert, it's just as good as The Weight.
The Band and this whole concert is totally next level!!!👌👍✌😎

You must watch the documentary concert, The Last Waltz. It’s the group, The Bands farewell concert, with an all-star lineup.
this is 1976. but it was shot by one of the greatest directors of all time (up to today): martin scorsese
The problem is people think this is odd, I don’t think it could be more natural. I have appreciated the Staples since I was a kid.
If you can sit still listening to this I’m sorry, but your headphones 🎧 are unplugged!🥰🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻
