This song is so good but this live version with the Staples is EVERYTHING!!! The Last Waltz is a live DVD of The Band’s farewell show on Thanksgiving Day, 1976. It features over a dozen famous artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton. Every song is incredible. Almost every member of The Band sings too. I watch that movie like once a month lol. I highly recommend watching on your own time!
The Band are among the all time greats and one of my favourites. They have a deep and diverse catalog. This is from the last concert of the original lineup called The Last Waltz. Up on Cripple Creek, Ophelia, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, It Makes No Difference, Chest Fever are just some of their greats. The Staples started with their Pops as a gospel singing group. Pops was a pretty good guitar player and Mavis has the voice of an angel. The had a bunch of RnB hits I'll Take You There, Respect Yourself. They wrote Freedom Highway after walking with Dr King, John Lewis et al in Selma.
The Band was my favorite band and I was at The Last Waltz. Levon Helm the drummer and Mavis Staples were great friends. When Levon died Mavis sang at his funeral
Where to begin. Levon Helm, the Drummer for The Band, takes the first verse, Mavis Staples takes the second, Papa Staples the third, Bassist Rick Danko the fourth and everyone helps on the last verse. Guitarist Robbie Robertson wrote "The Weight" on an old Martin Guitar. When he was looking for a town name in the first verse, he looked inside the guitar and saw the label with Nazareth, Pennsylvania on it, the home of Martin Guitars. Into the song it goes. This version is in the movie "The Last Waltz", directed by Martin Scorsese, documenting The Band's farewell concert at The Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The movie is astounding for all the performers who showed up and showed out. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Hawkins, Neil Diamond. The list goes on. Watch it, review it, or just enjoy yourself and chill out with it. One of the best concert films out there.
“Picked up my bags and went lookin for a place to hide When I saw ole Carmen and the devil walkin side by side. I said, “Hey Carmen, let’s go downtown.” She said, “I gotta go, but my friend can stick around.”
I'm 62. I grew up listening to The Band & The Staple Singers & so many other great artists from the 60s & 70s. I love watching the reaction of younger people hearing this for the 1st time. I STILL get goosebumps when Mavis & Pops Staple sing! ALL of them together = one of the best collaborations ever!
I was lucky enough to attend The Staples Singers induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Mavis Staples has one of the richest voices and she's performed with everybody. The Last Walz is a great documentary about The Band. I watch it at least twice a year, if not the full doc I watch Van Morrison's performance. LOL!
When it clicks, it's magic, you got that right. This sang was written by Robbie Robertson - the guitar player with the odd looking double neck guitar - He was Cayuga and Mohawk on his mother's side, born in Ontario, Canada and raised partly on the Six Nations Reserve near Toronto. The opening line of the song, "I pulled into Nazareth" was inspired by the label inside Robbie's Martin guitar which listed the place of manufacture as Nazareth, PA.
You should read up on Levon Helm the drummer and founder of the Band... the dude was a legend! He had a farm in upstate New York. I think it was around Woodstock. Every weekend he was not in the road, he would open up his barn and throw concerts... anyone who wanted to play could join in. Listen, hang out and party. There were many legendary Rock Stars that had been there over time, even a few discovered there in his barn. I heard it said the music started in a Friday night and would end until Sunday night... he really was loved by everyone in the industry and not in the music industry.
When Pops Staples sings "Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day "Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?" He said, "Do me a favor, son, won'tcha stay and keep Anna Lee company?", I get shivers. Such a tender, humble tone in his voice. He makes me feel like I've been to church; that my cares and woes are washed away. 😊
This is an excellent collaboration. The Staple Singers are a family of gospel singers that can sing . The Band id a collection of musicians from other bands and are really worth listening to.
Next you should feature the live version of 'The Band" singing 'It makes no Difference'. Great vocals from Rick Danko plus some solid sax! Also the duo with Emmylou Harris called Evangeline is fabulous.
one of THE best live performances in music history when looking at the talent, history and relevance in rock and gospel music. The Last Waltz is a must see documentary of the Band's last concert tour.
Robbie Robertson, the guitar player, wrote the song, it was covered by numerous others including Mavis Staple and Aretha Franklin "Carmen and The Devil walking side by side" The entire Last Waltz concert was filmed by Martin Scorsese
The film maker of that video was Martin Scorsese. I believe it was The Band's farewell show the concert was held in San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving day Nov. 25 1976
You must either watch on your own or react to, “The Last Waltz” documentary about The Band, and their last concert. Guest stars, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, and many many more. Everybody out there you must Watch it.
The Band is for sure. And Levon Helms. He is the drummer for the band. And he sings a lot of their songs. Check out his solo stuff. Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt. And Robbie Robinson He also sings on many of their songs. He is the guy with the double neck guitar. His solo stuff is worth it as well
Right? Such a great collaboration. But I'm here for the 🤩*Staples Family Singers* 🤩They had a string of crossover hits in the 1970s including *I'll Take You There* which you *gotta* listen to. I saw Mavis Staples play at a small club one time and we were totally taken to church . She had a long solo career of secular and gospel music. Still strong in her 70s. Pops Staples was a friend of the Rev. MLK Jr. and the family went to tour with MLK as he brought the movement North. Pops played a real cool guitar and his vocals are so low key genius. 👀 *I'll Take You There* (1971) Staples Family. This tv performance is really fun: "TV PERFORMANCE 1971". or else the Studio version *You Are Not Alone* (2010) Mavis Staples with Jeff Tweedy when Mavis was 71. her vocals are just as rich as ever. ................................ Here's who the Family collabed with: the last 70 years: Mahalia Jackson, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Band, Martin Scorsese, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, The Muscle Shoals Swampers, Bobby Womack, Sly & The Family Stone, Jimmy Page, Ry Cooder, Prince. .................and that's not all. 👀 Thanks for the great listen!
you may already know, or someone may have already said but tmThe Band and the Staples singers are 2 different groups that came together to do this song...I love love love this version...
The band was one of my favorite groups way back when they where originally session band they where Bob Dylans back up band at one time lots of talent God bless
I'm a 70 year old guy, 6'4", a huge Band fan, but when Ms Staples comes in I still get goosebumps. Incredible combination for this documentary. And if you didn't know the Staples later had a hit version of this song.
Brother you have found a goldmine, both great but The Band is special! they are like nobody else you'll ever hear. Classic......Mavis and her sisters and Pop's too!!! they don't make them like any of these guys anymore!
This was nearly 50 years ago. There is. A version done recently called playing for change where musicians around the world play this song. It is even more special.
This classic piece was originally released by the Band in 1968. But I first heard the Weight as part of the soundtrack for the 1969 counterculture film Easy Rider. Later that same year, the Band performed it at the Woodstock music festival in upstate New York. That ‘60s period was a golden era that included this type of music with the backdrop of the hippies, marijuana/drug use, the anti-Vietnam war protests, the Civil Rights movement, and other events that shaped American music, culture and politics. This particular video of the Band performing the Weight with the Staples was from 1976 that was included in the 1978 film The Last Waltz. Appreciate you covering this and I enjoyed your reaction.
The Band And The Staple Singers are amazing with many hits of their own. Another great version of the weight - Ringo Starr/ Robbie Robertson ( playing for change).
Add my vote for playing for change. I think these two versions are equally awesome. This one makes me smile. Playing for change makes me cry. I keep thinking that maybe the world could agree on this one thing and move toward peace
The Band is a Canadian band with one American member, Leon Helm ( drummer) from Arkansas. Try their “Up on Cripple Creek” next. R.I.P. Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel. Only Robbie Robertson and Garth Hudson remain.
THE BAND, AND STAPLES, "THE WEIGHT". This was the Bands Last concert. A documentary was made turned into some great performances by their guests. The name of the documentary was The Last Waltz. I recorded this back in 1981. Song was written by Guitarest Robbie Robertson, of the Band.
Unfortunately The Band and the Staples singers didn't perform this song live at the Last Waltz. This was a studio version done during the production of the Album The Last Waltz. The band members were a little pissed at Robbie for excluding a few important acts from the live show and putting in someone like Niel Diamnd who Robbie just happend to be producing an album for at the time! So they insisted that they do a song with the Staples Singers. This was the song they did and released it on the Last Waltz album. They kind of made it look like it was live to fit in with the Live theam of the album. Still a great performance buy all and most definitely my favorite version of this song.
The Staples singers are one family and have been soul and gospel singers for generations. The Band were originally Bob Dylan's backing band and basically invented Americana - folky rock deeply rooted in history. The Band's last concert (loaded with amazing guests) was captured in the movie "The Last Waltz" which is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock movies ever. The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is another standout from The Last Waltz, but do yourself a favour and watch the entire movie. You'll love it!
The Band is pretty incredible. Be sure to check out the EPIC "Chest Fever", "Up On Cripple Creek", "To Kingdom Come (Extended Cut)", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", “The Unfaithful Servant”, and “When I Paint My Masterpiece”
Pops always gives me goosebumps he reminds me of my old pastor when I lived in Jamaica queens. Ik I'm a gringo from a predominantly black/Hispanic neighborhood 😅 but I grew up in that gospel atmosphere, respect yourself was one of the first songs that got me into playing music and I have never looked back. I owe a lot of the joy in my life to bands like the staples and the band.
The Staples Singers are an amazing gospel group. The Band is a Canadian-American rock -blues-folk group. They were bob Dylan's backing band from 1965 to c. 1971.
There's a reason they are called The Band. First of all The Band had 3 exceptionally singers, Levon Helm (also the drummer) Richard Manuel (piano) and my favorite Rick Danko, bass player, violin. They were all multitalented. Robbie Robertson wrote most of the song, but they all made The Band what is was. I never tire of them. Their music, there personality and their story.
The Band was an ensemble of greatness, but it ALL hinged on Levon. Without him, The Band wouldn't exist as we know it. My gawd! Every time I hear Mavis, shivers run down my spine! Her and Gregg Allman sang with so much natural soul that it oozed out their pores. National treasures!
UP ON CRPPLE CREEK....THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN are a couple more songs you should definitely check out. The Band is awesome. They released this song in 1968. The Staple Singers asked The Band to join them to record this in 1978 for THEIR album The Last Waltz. So check out the original if you can.
Thank you 🙏 for reacting to my favorite tracks of all time. Playing for change did a 50 year anniversary celebration of this song. Robbie Robertson the double neck guitar player with Ringo Starr on drums are featured on that track. It has musicians/singers from all over the world. If you liked this one you will love it…. ✌️
You really should sit down, and watch the movie, The Last Waltz, directed by a young Martin Scorsese, it basically covers The Band’s farewell concert. The concert includes performances by the great performers of that wonderful era of music. Comments will probably cover most of the names. Any person as interested in great music as you are, will want to experience this film in its entirety. It’s considered one of the best concert films of all time. Bob Dylan choose these guys as the band that would introduce the world to him going from folk music to Electric rock n roll. Look into a record simple known as The Basement Tapes.
The Band was one of the most talented bands with super songwriting skills. Bob Dylan put them together as his backup band for a spell. When he went another direction musically, The Band was born.
The Staple Singers are a legendary gospel group. Mavis Staples is singing lead here- she is still everywhere in high demand. That’s Pops Staples coming in after her. This is from The Last Waltz filmed by Martin Scorsese.
One of the guitar players that didn’t sing on this one is Robbie Robertson. You should react to his song, Somewhere Down the Crazy River. (Studio version)
just watch the whole movie. this is one of the best live performances in the history of music. That version of the weight is my personal favorite. " I saw old Carmen and the devil walk side by side. I said hey Carmen come on let's go downtown she said I've got to go, but my friend can stick around" second fav song is when Neil Young does helpless. ( with Joni Mitchell )
Actually this version is a studio version not live. It was recorded during the production of the Album The Last Waltz from the movie of the same name. Some of the members of The Band were pissed off at Robbie for including some acts (Like Niel Diamond which Robbie just happend to be producing an album for at the time) and leaving out others that really had an influence on them like the Staples Singers. They produced a studio version with The Staples Singers that looked like a live performance so it would fit in with the live theam of the Album/Concert. This information was from Levon Helms book, This Wheels On Fire.
Another one from "The Last Waltz" "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" a classic sung by drummer Levon Helm. This guy was such a nice guy and loved by so many in the music world and by many fans. The Band also were Bob Dylan's backing band on some of Dylan's tours. Dylan also appears in this movie in the farewell show at the end and it's amazing. You should check the movie out young man. ☮️✌️💕👌
Biz I want to thank you for your time to do these reactions! I watch you every workday! Your smile is infectious! Do you realize that this was done almost 50 yrs ago. You might not even been born yet. Thank you Biz!!!!
Another version of The Weight worth checking out is the Playing for Change version. The movie, The Last Waltz, is considered one of the best rock movies ever made. Another gem off the movie is Van Morrison singing Caravan.
Staples joined The Band for this concert. Last Waltz was a farewell concert for The Band. They broke up but had lots of great singers and musicians join them for this goodbye concert, which was made into a movie. Try Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down by The Band.
Glad I didn't miss this reaction. It's impossible to not love this song, especially this version. The movie The Last Waltz is worth your time to watch. I saw it 3 or more times on the big screen way back when it was released in theaters. This song gave me goosebumps to. Van Morrison performs the song Caravan on the movie. You'd probably enjoy that.
My fav song on this. Big Van fan. And how Robbie is just loving how Van is giving it all. Then he throws down the mic and walks off stage. A moment of confusion😂 on Robbie’s face! I made a mixed tape for giving birth to my son. Yeah I make mixed tapes for everything. Anyway if he was born a minute before he would’ve been born to Caravan. Instead he was born to Joni Mitchell’s “both Sides Now”. Which is probably more appropriate. All about life and stuff. Instead of the sounds of people taking hits off a joint. Haha.
My favourite verse.... "Picked up my bags and went lookin' for a place to hide. Then I saw ol' Carmen and the Devil, walkin' side by side, I said 'Hey Carmen. Come on let's go downtown.' She said 'I gotta go, but my friend can stick around'.
The Staple Singers go way back. Mavis is one of the greatest singers that most people don't know about. Do "I'll Take You There". Soulful...😎
Yes. "I'll take you there" would be a great follow up to this. Mavis staples really is a national treasure

☮️💜. Definitely need to watch The Last Waltz someday
Mavis Staples is Queen. She worked with Prince on a couple of projects.
More ,from the band
There's a reason they are called The Band. First of all The Band had 3 exceptionally singers, Levon Helm (also the drummer) Richard Manuel (piano) and my favorite Rick Danko, bass player, violin. They were all multitalented. Robbie Robertson wrote most of the song, but they all made The Band what is was. I never tire of them. Their music, there personality and their story.
Great old classic. That whole show was great
What a collaboration between the band and the staple singers. 👍🏻👍🏻✌✌
Have always loved this sing.
The Band is tragically under appreciated by the masses. Everyone knows this song but Chest fever, Cripple Creek.
Yes…. Souls colliding and the music they make we are blessed to hear❤❤❤❤
My absolute favorite version of this song!
These guys influenced many legends even the Beatles !
One of the best rock movies you’ll ever see 🔥👌😎
You really should sit down, and watch the movie, The Last Waltz, directed by a young Martin Scorsese, it basically covers The Band’s farewell concert.
You have to check out the Staple Singers. You will know the tunes when you hear them. And Mavis is pure gold!!!
Mavis has no peers, she is that great. Pappy Staples' voice is its own instrument. Thank you Arkansas for Levon.
She said Carmen and the Devil. Check out the lyrics when you have time. It's a great old song.
There is so much deep meaning to this song. Read the lyrics and let them sink in. Very profound! Great reaction!
yes, it is impossible to watch this without moving, grooving and clapping! great reaction!!
They were amazing. Mavis’ voice is unlike any other.
One of the guitar players that didn’t sing on this one is Robbie Robertson. You should react to his song, Somewhere Down the Crazy River. (Studio version)
The Band's musicality was of the highest grade quality! Gospel , soul or obscure Tibetan mountain disco bluegrass! Go over it once,and.... Boom!!!
Mavis, Chris Stapleton and Maureen Morris sang at the CMA together and it was 🤯
Do more of The Band! “Up On Cripple Creek”, “King Harvest”, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, “Stage Fright”, “The Shape I’m In” ….
I remember when The Band first came out with this song. I think I was still in High School.
just watch the whole movie. this is one of the best live performances in the history of music. That version of the weight is my personal favorite. " I saw old Carmen and the devil walk side by side. I said hey Carmen come on let's go downtown she said I've got to go, but my friend can stick around" second fav song is when Neil Young does helpless. ( with Joni Mitchell )
Love it! You must check out the concert movie this is from...The Last Waltz! So many great performances! 😎💖
If you ever do a movie reaction, you should do this one. The Last Waltz 🔥❤️
My wife, Mavis, passed a few years ago. This brought some tears... thank you!
Ain't nobody today making music like this! Grew up listening to this takes me back to my childhood.
4:06. There it is. Letting loose my man! ✌🏼🙏🏼👍🏼
That’s the last waltz I wore this dvd out on the Mavis staples, Ronnie Hawkins, and van Morrison parts👊
Haha.
I love The Band and The Staples Singers!
My favourite verse....
"Picked up my bags and went lookin' for a place to hide.
Then I saw ol' Carmen and the Devil, walkin' side by side,
I said 'Hey Carmen. Come on let's go downtown.'
She said 'I gotta go, but my friend can stick around'.
You should check out Old Crow Medicine Show's version with Gillian Welch.
