The drummer, Levon Helm was from Arkansas, hence the accent ~ the rest of the guys in the band are from Canada. Their style of music was referred to as "Americana". I love this version of "The Weight" as the Staples bring the song to another level. Mavis' voice is amazing. "Respect Yourself" is a great song if you'd like to hear more of the Staple Singers.
It. Is A movie ,the last waltz, a rock and roll movie by Scorsese, the band played there last gig,and invited all there friends to join them, gotta watch it man, it's fire. Peace out
Came here to say this. The Bands farewell performance and produced the greatest rendition of what many already considered their greatest hit. Thanks to The Staples. Mavis Staples and Levon Helm remained friends and played together often throughout the years.
Except without Robbie. He was very determined to not go back on the road. Robbie went on to write scores for several Martin Scorsese's movies. The remaining of The Band continue to tour, they were still good, but without Robbie to write songs they did not have any new material.@@cablebrain9691
Shon Nailed It. “Homey. Comfortable. It just feels authentic.” Perfect. Like your favorite faded blue jeans that feel soft as the best cotton and as comfortable as your best leather chair.
THE BAND were a group well oiled in their profession and each in their own right quite accomplished musicians. They started as bob dylans back up band. Then boom. They ruled the airwaves🤘❤️
They were already playing together as the Hawks, Ronnie Hawkins backing band years before that (Levon in 1957, Robbie in 1959, Rick in 1960, and Richard and Garth in 1961)
The Band, after they left Ronnie Hawkins, were Bob Dylan’s band for years. All wonderful musicians and human beings. A deep dive into Levon Helm’s career is worth the effort.
The Staple Singers were a family gospel group who first recorded in the 50s, only Mavis survives today. they had two big hits in the 70s, "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There". The Band were one of the best groups and were Bob Dylans' backing band and released a famous album in 1968 called "Music From Big Pink". Only Garth Hudson, the organ player, survives today. This could have been recorded last week but it is nearly 50 years old, time waits for no man, get a Squier Telecaster and start picking!!!
Robbie Robertson wrote this, great Canadian musician. He last stuff was writing the score for the movie 'Killers of the Flower Moon' (2023) which earned him a him a posthumous nomination for Best Original Score at the Academy Awards this year. RIP. Check out 'Up On Cripple Creek' or 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' with the Band. 'Somewhere Down The Crazy River' was his biggest solo hit and also well worth your time. Cheers.
Want to know what the big musicians of the day were listening to? The Band, that’s who! This performance comes from The Band’s farewell performance in San Francisco. The movie, “The Last Waltz” is “must see” for proper modern music education and enjoyment! Nothing quite like The Band!
Your reactions are always so insightful and rich. Yes, The Band AND Mavis!!! Mavis Staples is my girl; there’s a tone to her voice that sounds like nobody else, and when you mix that with the juiciness of her soul and her exquisite talent, it’s just such a gift!!! You absolutely must react to Mavis and her family, The Staple Singers on their recording of “I’ll Take You There”. It’s crispy and juicy, and soul perfection!!!
The video footage of Pop Staples and his daughters was some of the most BEAUTIFUL video footage in a documentary (Basically I feel this song was a documentary) that I have ever seen! I don't know who was calling the shots on how to shoot this event, BUT THEY NAILED IT! If you dont feel good after watching and listening to this song, check for a pulse. Great reaction , TY
The Band was an amazing group. Four Canadians and a cat from Arkansas (the drummer). You take that group and then you add in The Staples with the great Mavis Staples singing? Absolute class!
Straight to Church Brother..."The Staple Singers" A rabbit hole of it's won. Mavis Staple...beautiful. Great performance here with "The Band" They just don't em' them like this any more.
You need to know: the Band was/always were as soulful as it gets (best concert I have ever seen, back in the day!). So, yeah, here are the Staples Singers, full to the brim with soul too = but the Band didn't catch it from them; they had it. Hall of Famers and well-deserved. Watch one of the live cuts of the Band doing "It Makes No Difference". One of dozens. Have you caught any of the "Playing For Change" videos? AMAZING, and just a year or two ago, they used this song: people from all over the world doing pieces.
Say Hey Shon, I saw The Band and The Staples many times at separate shows. Your words: Authentic, homey, comfortable, real. You nailed it! Loved your reaction to this great performance of a great song by wonderful musicians.
This version is one of my all time favorite songs. The harmonies of both groups add a dimension the original album version doesn't have. I've watched many of these "reaction" videos to this song it a shame that more don't know The Staple Singers. It also surprises me that people don't know how the violin is used as a fiddle to create a distinct country sound.
My favorite reactions from you are the ones that make you smile and make you more curious. This is both. I wish we could have hung together for about 10 years, starting about 1968. Thank you Brother Shon.
Every performance from The Last Waltz is high quality and worthwhile reacting...major acts sitting in with The Band throughout...BB King, Clapton, Van Morrison, and so many many more!
One of the members of The Band, Robbie Robertson went solo after The Band. Robbie Robertson "SOMEWHERE DOWN THAT CRAZY RIVER" is fire!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 (original video). His voice is sooo deep and great.
Yeah, he wrote that one.. One of the most overlooked musicians. If he liked this song, he should really explore Robbie Roberson's work. Robbie Roberson is Native American from (Canada?), I chuckled when he said southern soul music, lol ..straight out of Haight Ashbury
That Last bit you heard was a song called 'Gimme that old time Religeon'. It was sung in the church I grew up going to. Brings back some sweet memories.
This performance is from the movie The Last Waltz which was a documentary about The Band with live performances by some of the greatest names in history, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, and Joni Mitchell. The song The Weight wasn't part of the live show but was added later.
This is from a documentary - The Last Waltz. This was The Band's last appearance together with their original line-up. It was filmed at the famous Winterland Ballroom here in San Francisco, which closed a month later for good. The show lasted for many hours and included many stellar guests besides The Staples: Bob Dylan (The Band started as his backing band), Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Ronnie Wood, Neil Young and others. Check the whole movie sometime. It's well worth a watch. It was directed by Martin Scorsese. Thanks for watching and sharing! Peace from SF
The Staples actually recorded their own version of “The Weight” (which is a great one!) so obviously they knew the song cold. And of course they and the Band were all top-notch musicians. But weirdly, my first time hearing the song with both ears was in the documentary film It Might Get Loud, where Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge play it on acoustic guitars over the end credits.😊
The Last waltz is THE BANDS last Concert on Thanksgiving Day in 1976. It's also their story. A lot of legends performed with them at this concert like Van Morrison and Neil Young which are also great songs to check out. They were legendary themselves. If you get a chance to watch the entire thing I would absolutely recommend it.
This was written by Robbie Robertson. The Band started as teenage band that got to go out on the road as Ronny Hawkins band, they toured for a few years and later Bob Dylan asked them to be his backup band when he went electric. Such a great sound they were just The Band they are their own genre Americana Rock ,they were all Canadians but Levon Helms Drums Vocals. There is only one member left Garth Hudson. This is from their farewell concert film The Last Waltz directed byMartin Scorcese .RIP -Rick Danko, Richard Manuel ,Robbie Robertson ,Levon Helms
Wow... I knew they were the backup for Bob Dylan, but I didn't know they started out touring with Ronny Hawkins. Hawkins is a bit of a minor legend himself.
Robbie Robertson was the guy with the double guitar, his mother was Mohawk and he grew up visiting relatives on the reservation. He and his band Red Road Ensemble was the featured performers for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Check out Makin' A Noise In This World. You will love it.
An all time classic and a fantastic collaboration of great musicians. I never tire of hearing this song, especially this particular performance. Glad you enjoyed it.
If you can, watch "The Weight, Playing for Change" version. They took singers and musicians from around the world, Asia, Africa, US, etc, and combined their verses to make one great version of this song (The Weight). It is something to see and hear!
The song The Weight was voted #41 In Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It's a very well known song. That's why you feel like you've heard it. It's probably been playing around you numerous times in your life when you had no idea what you were hearing
This is probably one of the top 10; at least, from both the Staple Singers and The Band!! Levon Helm, we miss you, bro!! Rest in Peace! And, by the way, The Weight song is from the movie Easy Rider!
I grew up within 40 miles of 4 of 5 of The Band’s members. I was a handful of years younger than these guys. They were sooo beloved in my area They are my “Beatles” Peace
Canadian roots rockers The Band call it quits with a lavish farewell show at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Nov. 25, 1976. Filmed by Martin Scorsese, this documentary features standout performances by rock legends such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell and Muddy Waters, as well as interviews tracing the group's history and discussing road life. Worth watching the music documentary
Between The Band and The Staples Singers, youve got an entire chapter of the American/Canadian songbook. You should absolutely check out more from both groups. Read about them as well, theyve got amazing stories.
They're soulful but The Staples are from Chicago (Illinois) while The Band are from Toronto (Ontario). Doing a lot of Canadian music lately, I see. Gordon Lightfoot is from Ontario as well.
Gret=at reaction! It was part of a movie - "The Last Waltz", The Band's farewell concert, filmed by Martin Scorsese, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco in 1976. This piece was not part of the live performance but was recorded and played during the concert.
If i was offered to be taken back in time by an ancient alien to attend any event in history ..i would very quickly ask for a ticket to attend The Last Waltz concert on Thanksgiving Thursday in 1976 in San Francisco over everything else ! To witness the musicianship and brilliance of The Band on stage and the cream of the Rock performers there to say farewell ,would have been utterly bonkers brilliant . Can't someone invent the software to transport me back then ? I'd be your pal for life .....
Actually they are the exact same instrument. A fiddler can play a Stradivarius. A violin is synonymous with classical music, while a fiddle is akin to country.@@ruserious9577
The song "The weight" was in Easy Rider, and The BIg Chill. The last one "that old time religion is hilarious, they are obviously smashed, but still sound great. Love THe Band.
Loved The Band !Only Garth is still with us. All the other members have crossed over to the other side. You should check out the other songs by this group. The Staples Singers had a great list of songs."I'll Take You There" is a classic iconic song.
I was only 9 when this collaboration happened. So it's understandable that I never heard it until last year. Of course, I have been hearing The Weight and The Band, forever, and I knew The Staples from the 1970s. I think the director included the little tid bit at the end to demonstrate how The Band is still using a very old style of harmony that was still around when I was a kid. Another reactor from New Zealand said his old uncles sat around playing and singing just like that too when he was young. I believe that was a style imported by the early English settlers. Next time listen to that bit first, and you'll almost, but not quite her it echo in The Weight.🧓🪕🎸🎭💖
I think the sound that your trying to explain is called gospel. The Staple singers put the cherry on top with Mavis' wonderfull voice but the song always had that feel even at any of the shows with The Band! They played the music that moved them and never worried about the pigeon hole that others tried to squeeze them into. This was a farewell performance by The Band and they invited all their friends! This wasnt put on by a corporate anybody. This was friends playing together for the love and enjoyment of each other!

This is one of the finest performances ever! Mavis Staples, folks.
Mavis was spectacular, but Pops took us to church.
Going to see her at Red Rocks next week!
Mavis is an American treasure and everything she does shines above all others!
One of my bfs favorite songs ❤️
Mavis, Pops, Leon, Rick, all of them performed to perfection.
The Staples also recorded this song on their own. They are amazing. I think my favorite is Let's Do It Again. :) They were 🤩
Levon Helm was in the movie "Shooter" when Wahlberg went to check on the special ammo.
The oldest member of The Band Garth Hudson is the only one still alive
This type of music is NOW termed Americana, back then it was just called good old rock ‘n’ roll with a blues, country, R&B, soul vibe.❤

He also played the Daddy in coal Miner’s daughter.
The Night They Drove Ol Dixie Down from The Last Waltz will give you goosebumps.

The Bands farewell performance and produced the greatest rendition of what many already considered their greatest hit. Thanks to The Staples.
Mavis Staples and Levon Helm remained friends and played together often throughout the years.
They retired, and yet I saw them twice after that, years later. A typical Rock ‘N ‘ Roll “last performance.”

Best music show,ever recorded
This is such a great song, the way The Band did it. BUT....Add the Staples....it hits the sublime!!!!
Shon Nailed It. “Homey. Comfortable. It just feels authentic.” Perfect. Like your favorite faded blue jeans that feel soft as the best cotton and as comfortable as your best leather chair.
Back in the day, EVERYONE wanted to perform with "The Band". They were the "influence" that changed Eric Clapton and broadened his horizons.
THE BAND were a group well oiled in their profession and each in their own right quite accomplished musicians. They started as bob dylans back up band. Then boom. They ruled the airwaves🤘❤️
They were playing for years before they ever met Dylan
They were already playing together as the Hawks, Ronnie Hawkins backing band years before that (Levon in 1957, Robbie in 1959, Rick in 1960, and Richard and Garth in 1961)
Mavis Staples might have my favorite voice I’ve ever heard.
This song is a church service. Keep waiting for an "Amen!" at the end every time I hear it.
The Band, after they left Ronnie Hawkins, were Bob Dylan’s band for years. All wonderful musicians and human beings. A deep dive into Levon Helm’s career is worth the effort.
