This is from the film The Last Waltz . The Band was breaking up so they did a farewell concert with many greats . Watch it for yourself it is fantastic.
"The Band" was at the top of their game and just didn't feel it anymore and decided to end it on a high note instead of the path that so many other bands take.
@@Robbob9933 The Band broke up because Danko, Helm, and Manuel had become heavy heroin addicts and were basically killing themselves. Robbie Robertson decided that he was going to leave the band because he thought that being on the road for so long was destroying them all and somebody was going to die. He was proven right when the others decided to regroup (Robertson declined) and Manuel committed suicide after a concert.
@@BobSoltis1Do you know why this and the performance of Evangeline with Emmylou Harris were recorded in a studio instead of live like the rest of the performances? Was it because the Staples and Emmylou couldn’t make it to the concert?
@@crescentfreshbret After the live show It was decided that the show needed more Black performers so they decided to ask The Staples to do a performance with The Band for the movie release. Evangeline was written at the last minute by Robbie Robertson specifically for the show. Robbie wasn't able to get it finished in time for the show due all the other responsibilities he had because Helm, Danko, and Manuel were pretty much useless junkies by that time. He finished it a day or so after the live show and Emmylou was asked to perform it in the studio for the movie release as well.
"Cookout Music"... that's a great name. I'm going to make a "Cookout" playlist. Mavis Staples is one of R&B's queens. Her voice can take you to church from the first note.
Great reaction! I've seen a number of reactors watch this video and you're the only one that highlighted the awesome ad libs that Ms Staple is throwing in there. So soul felt and natural. Beautiful. Subscribing to your channel now 👍👍
The song every songwriter wishes they'd written. And this performance, with the incomparable Staples Singers, is nothing short of GLORIOUS!! One of the all-time greatest performances ever captured on film, thank you Mr. Scorcese. And awesome reaction video, loved it!!
Robbie grew into a class songwriter who's output grew the band into "The Band". Ronny Hawkins' who taught the Hawks to be a band, always acknowledged Robbie's songwriting prowess.
Levon Helm the drummer was also an actor. He played Loretta Lynn's father in Coal Miner's Daughter. The older gentleman was Mavis's father. Martin Scorsese directed this record of the Band's final concert, on Thanksgiving 1976 in San Francisco. The Band perform 12 numbers, and back up Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Ringo Starr, Dr. John and the Staples.
After they left Ronnie Hawkins, Robbie was the one who tried to keep discipline in the group, however as Richard, Rick and Levon got more and more into drugs, especially heroin, it got more and more difficult. They were all multitalented and I love them all (especially RIck Danko and Robbie), but the heavy drug use took it's toll. Robbie did drugs as well, he is very open about it in his book, but he was perhaps a little more ambitious than the other guys. He also had a young family that kept him grounded.@@Alwayswilling
In 1999, The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they performed two of their many hits "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There".
I just saw Marvelous Mavis in concert in my town last February! Wowza! She had the whole place rockin’! It’s like vocally, she can barely contain all that joyful soul!!!!!❤ And we love Pops Staples’ singing too!
Awesome song!! Love the combo. It's heaven on earth! For more of the band check out It Makes No Difference, Don't Do It, and The Shape I'm In for starters. Magic!
Really enjoyed your reaction to this epic collab. The Band produced so much great musis during their time together, this being just one example. Mavis Staples is one of the all time great gospel/soul singers, and she definitely shows it here. The fourth singer, Rick Danko, is also playing that phenomenal bass line AND singing those incredible high harmonies during the chorus. Btw, the singer you compared him to is named Joe Cocker, not Crocker.
I was at The Last Waltz and I thought the movie was alright. Most artists had two songs and the movie picked the popular one instead of the one that was best performed that day
The band is a fantastic group, just on their own. Try listening to one of their songs called It Makes No Difference. Live or studio, they're both great.
Do yourself a favor and order the DVD of "The Last Waltz", The Bands' farewell concert, great reaction, check out The Staples' "Respect Yourself" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" from The Last Waltz, you hit the mother lode of American music, The Staple Singers started making records in the 50s, they're all gone except for Mavis.
Although written by Robbie Robertson ( RIP) ( on lead guitar) this is pure Americana Roots music. If you watch Summer of Soul , you’ll see Mavis having a sing-off with Mahalia Jackson in ‘69.
First off a singing drummer is way cool. Robbie Robertson, the guitar player recently passed. He was one of the most soulful musicians you’ll ever experience. These guy, when they were on stage together, were magical.
❤❤❤ The Last Waltz. Still have the album and poster Glad you let the last bit play out . You seriously need to watch the ENTIRE concert/ celebration. Maybe buy the dvd then no interruptions
I gotta say , this is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Just the way it's put together and the voices in sync. If the last minute of this song doesn't raise the hair on the back of you neck you better get out the blood pressure machine cuz you might be dead
This video of The Band and The Staple singers is perfection. Not just the music but the camera when it comes around Mr. Staple and you see all four of them and you can see they are related. Hope you guys watching know about The Last Waltz directed by Sorcese. This unites America. Don’t let them divide us.
This version of the Weight is great but the PFC version that celebrates the song's 50th anniversary is totally legendary,my friend. I highly recommend it. Keep up the awesome reaction videos. A friend from Maine, USA 💕💕💕💕👍👍👍👍👍👍
I always love when the Staple Singers would perform with these drunken rock and roll bands and it came out wonderful. This one came out of a video about the Band and their career if I remember right.
Mavis. Pops. The Band. Singers. There is no words for how great this sounds. Never b equaled never b upstaged. Peace Forever. 69 I still chill too the bone on this. Just like 45 almost 50 years ago. ❤
She mastered many genres of music before palsy took her voice. Her mastery of voice was like a color spectrum, just perfect Big hits included Blue Bijou- Your No Good. She did a Spanish album of Mexican music. She performed in The Pirates of Penzance. She collaborated with many great artists . Almost every guy in America had a crush on her in the 70s
I’m sorry I missed this a year ago. This morning I am adding it to my folder of Exceptional Reaction Videos. Very nicely done, Mug. Really enjoyed this one. Thank you.
Great great job to a timeless song that just gets better over the years. You had some awesome comments, too. Glad you enjoyed it and stayed for Old Time Religion bit. Fun. These guys are an amazing band.
Robbie Robertson 🇨🇦dbl guitar/ vocals, (RIP) with The Band & The Staples singers gave the world what is my favorite song of The Band’s repertoire! Mavis Staples is wonderful! You should watch The Kennedy Centre Awards honouring Al Green … when Sam Moore ( of Sam & Dave ) & Mavis Staples sing ‘Take Me To The River’. Al Green was in absolute heaven ☮️💜🥰
ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL THE STAPLE SINGERS HAVE SUCH A RICHNESS TO THIS SONG... THE STAPLE SINGERS ARE FINE SINGERS FROM THE LATE 60S, ON YOUR NEWEST SUBSCRIBER GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIEND, REV REECE CURRY

Mavis staples is a national treasure
I was gonna say that exactly!

So am I

The Staples and The Band the most perfect pairing. Never get tired of their harmonies. This is the closest I’ll ever get to church

"His voice is so soothing." It's so soothing that I'd play it to get a baby to sleep. It's THAT soothing!
The Staple Singers were also gospel singers. They always brought church with them.
That's why this is a worship song OF OUR LORD JESUS; Band & Staples-more blessings from & for our blessed BOOMER Generation!!
The Band and The Staples. What more can you ask for? Simply beautiful!
Always loved Pops Staples voice, Mavis is a national treasure, this is the most iconic version of this song ever recorded, and live in one take
It was not "live in one take". This was filmed in a studio and 3 run throughs were filmed and edited to make this video.

The Staples - I’ll Take You There.
A must! My happy song!
I always love at 4:46 when Rick Danko comes in guns a blazing and then eventually settles down into the harmonies.

The Last Waltz -- arguably the greatest concert film ever made.

Arguably? No. It is.
I saw it in the theaters when it was released. Loved it then and Love it now
Absolutely no argument. Scorsese directed and filmed it too.
FYI, Pops Staples learned to play guitar on the Dockery Plantation from Charley Patton and Son House … blues gods.
LOVED the Band. So great. Am amazed by the Staple Singers. So good!
One of he great classic collabs ❤❤❤
Robbie Robertson the lead guitar player of The Band passed away today August 9, 2023 after a long illness. He was GREAT!
You should do “I’ll Take You There” by the Staple Singers! The band were at one time Bob Dylan’s backing band!!
Yeah, I hear her in the back round.
That is the incomparable Mavis Staples right there.
She’s now 83 and still fantastic by the way.
