  • Thank you to our patrons CeeCee and Cynthia for this wonderful selection... What a beautiful rendition of this song. I much prefer this over the other one we did (which was still good but seemed more like a collage) and there was so much underlying emotion being shown by The Band... they were happy and sad that it was the end. You can just tell.

Their 'Brown Album" was George Harrison's favorite album. He said it was the most honest and pure album ever recorded. You are so fortunate to have suck an ocean of great music from the 60's, 70's to take a deep dive into. The music them was so much more organic. I was also fortunate. I experienced the 60's and 70's music song at a time. I was formed by it. My mother sent me this album on cassette when I was serving my 3rd tour in Vietnam.

Notes on the film and on this music video from it.
The film was their last live show with this lineup on Thanksgiving Day 1976. The audience was treated to a Thanksgiving before the show. There were various poets that spoke between songs. Most of the artists were prolke they had recorded with, or greatly admired. The chandeliers abd back drop were from the original set of Gone With the Wind. There us a true live version of The Weight in the film, performed solely by The Band. Between concert clips were various interview clips, which is where "Old Time Religion" is from.
There were three songs that were recorded separately as music videos abdvinckuded in the film. This sing, Evangeline (featuring Emmylou Harris) as the concert didn't cover their country end of their music, and The Last Waltz Suite, which plays as the credits role and is one of the few moments where special effects are used to make it appear that the camera is nearly infinitely backing away from the band.
The audio on each song is an incredible editing job. Scorsese shot the videos like a film. He storyboards every shot and each is shot with a single camera. So the band would play just the parts the camera was storyboards fir. So at each cut, the band stops. But all the vocals are mixed in live, switching takes to match what is on screen. And it is seamless. So, none of the three are true live performances.
You need to watch the full film. It is arguably the best concert film ever. Next up would be Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense. That one is directed by Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). The stage show was designed for the film.

This lack of “perfection” was a hallmark of this era of music, as artists looked for a “realness” in their sound. It was in keeping with the rebellious times; especially the years 65-75. Basically artists saying to the record labels, “This is my creation. Keep your hands off, and don’t try to “produce” my/our sound into something you think is more commercially viable.” I think history is clear that the result was a flurry of exceptional music that goes to the human soul through its untainted realness.

As you have witnessed, all members of The Band are outstanding musicians. Each of them can play multiple instruments, and all but one (Garth Hudson being the exception) have distinct vocal ranges that help them establish such a unique sound. The 'extra' footage at the end of the song is actually the next scene in the movie. I haven't a clue how/why this ended up being included on this video clip, but I've noticed it's that way with everybody who reacts to this tune. There are two songs in particular from The Last Waltz that I love and strongly recommend for your channel: It Makes No Difference and Evangeline (featuring Emmylou Harris). Both of these songs remain my head for days on end whenever I hear them. I hope you take a chance on them.
On an added note, you may enjoy watching the movie itself once you've decided to stop reacting to the songs. The Last Waltz (directed by Robbie Robertson's best pal, Martin Scorsese) is the story of The Band as told in their own words. Each member was interviewed separately and jointly. Their conversations are intertwined with footage of their final concert (Thanksgiving Day, along with a handful of studio performances, as was the case with this song. It is an excellent movie for anyone who appreciates live performances.

Probably the best concert/ documentary ever, this song is classic - Levon had a wonderful voice, from Louisiana, other verse is by Rick danko , another great voice.. Martin Scorsese directed.. the film had a story to tell between the concert footage about ‘band’s’ history..

Actually Robbir was sad at The Last Waltz. he knew he wanted to stop touring, due to the drug use, and Robbie had a young family ( 3 small children and a wife) he wanted to spend more time with, but in his book he writes, when I realized this was the last time we all played together, I felt a sadness that nearly crushed me ( or something to that effect), but I knew I wanted to ride that train to the end.

That extra part was from the Last Waltz concert/movie.... just the guys backstage talking in between songs. Any fan of music should watch this movie. If you watch the movie then you should've seen that last part in the video !

Just so everyone knows "the performance of "The Weight" by The Band and the Staple Singers in the 1978 film The Last Waltz was filmed in a studio. Director Martin Scorsese shot the song on an MGM soundstage after the concert, along with "Evangeline" featuring Emmylou Harris. The studio versions replaced the concert versions in the film." Now that you know you'll notice the stage setup for those songs differs drastically (except a black background) from the live ones. I found out about this only a few years ago and to be honest I felt and still feel somewhat manipulated. How many of you for all these years thought it was the complete live final performance? I bet it's a majority. What's next, a lead singer in a popular 70's band that still tours using prerecorded vocal tracks instead of singing them live? Oh, wait that's already happened, I'm looking at you Don Henley. It's just another example of not getting what you've paid for. Still, it's a great concert film and arguably one of the best, I just wish they were a bit more upfront about what it is and what it is not.

I love this version of this song. For a little side trip, check out "I'll Take You There" by the Staples Singers.

The little interlude at the end was from the movie. All the songs are interspersed with behind the scenes interviews and moments like that one. There was some bitterness by some of the members of The Band that the movie focused too much on Robbie. Bad feelings are understandable, after all, they were breaking up after being on the road together for 17 years and were wearing on each other. But Robbie and Scorcese stayed good friend all the way up to Robbie's death with Robbie scoring last year's "Killers of the Flower Moon".

One of the major things about the Band--I hope you'll get deeper into them (the whole brown 'The Band' album is brilliant, worth doing the whole thing)--is that they had 3 brilliant singers capable of bringing real emotion to a song. Robbie wrote for each singer differently.

The Band got their name from, being that is what they were called when they played with Bob Dylan when he went electric from straight folk. They were always just referred to as the band. They played with Ronnie Hawkins thats how they met Dylan. Robbie Robertson did doc. about The Band called "we were brothers once" it's his opinion about them but there's great footage of their early days.

I'm on my third video version of "The Last Waltz", VHS, DVD and now Blu-ray. One of the best concert films ever made, along with "Stop Making Sense" with Talking Heads, "The Grateful Dead Movie', with the Grateful Dead, and "Woodstock", with everybody. This version of "The Weight" is THE definitive version. Period. Now try Muddy Waters "Mannish Boy" from "The Last Waltz", you'll be glad that you did.

There’s a you tube video that you can look up and I’d think you’d enjoy- it’s of Robbie Robertson asking Martin Scorsese listen to van Morrison track ‘ Tupelo Honey’ and it’s too wonderful

Interestingly, not done live but on a soundstage and included in the concert movie. I wonder why - an afterthought? scheduling conflicts? It would have been great if this was part of the live concert, but it's still great and one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

If I remember correctly from having watched the DVD ( repeatedly 🙄) it was scheduling conflicts for both The Staples' & Emmy Lou Harris.
