This video is all about spreading fertilizer and grass seed over an existing lawn.
I moved into this house last fall. I didn't do anything to the lawn, I just started ripping out overgrown plants. Needless to say, the lawn was in rough shape.
Before this video, I sprayed the entire lawn twice with Tenacity herbicide. I used Tenacity because I knew I would be aerating and overseeding. Most herbicides, or weed control products, will impede grass seed from germinating (growing). Tenacity is safe for grass seeds and young grass plants, that's why I used it.
In my last video, Lawn Aeration Part 1, I went over how to core aerate your lawn. After core aerating, the lawn is in a perfect state to sow grass seed. When you already have a lawn and are sowing more grass seed, it is called 'overseeding'.
It's important to develop the root system of recently sown grass seed. That is why I also applied starter fertilizer in this video. Starter fertilizer contains a high level of Phosphorous which encourages root growth.
I'm in the Greater Cincinnati area, so I used a tall fescue grass seed. The type of grass seed you should sow will depend on your area. Check out your state's corporate extension office's website to learn more about how and when to fertilize and seed in your area.
