I thatched, core aerated, and overseeded Kentucky bluegrass here in Michigan a week ago because I thought that would whip my lawn into shape the best…I do have a bit of a weed problem in probably 1/4 of my 1/2 acre lot. Would this be an advisable plan this fall yet? Bit of a warm spell with the last two weeks still in the 80’s but finally about to see a drop in temps into 60’s this coming week. Been staying diligent with watering. Thanks for anyone with any input
I love using Tenacity on my lawn In Michigan. Unfortunately, according to the label, Tenacity should not be applied to weeds in St. Augustine grass like we have at our house in Florida.
Yes that is correct, for warm season grasses there are many great products but selecting them is a little different, I have a guide here for southern lawns: www.silvercymbal.com/weed-control-warm-season
Thank you posting this video! We're struggling with weeds. May I ask how long after applying the Anderson product can we start using the Tenacity one? Our lawn is probably going to need both 😂
Couple of questions: 1. Should I mow before my 1st weed and feed with Surge? 2. Should I airrate my lawn before I start this process? 3. How long after using surge should I wait before applying tenacity? Thank you to anyone who answers!
Great video. I’m thinking about insourcing my lawn care since my guy is up to $100 a treatment and according to my nest cam, he’s not at my house for more than 10 minutes. I get the weed control part, but do you have a video and product you recommend for the fertilizer schedule? I’m also not sure about grub control….
Silver, I’m in zone 7b. Backyard is about 1200 sf and a mix of fescue but mostly weeds. Prior owners never took care of it. Thick weeds. I need to seed now. I do like Anderson products. So I van weed and feed with their product and then seed with tall fescue? I’ll get tenacity, but have such a large area of weeds to kill. Thank you for your tutorials. I’m going to take pix along the way and I’ll tag you on IG since I’ll be following your advice. Lawn is half full sun and half moderate to most shade.
It doesnt -- and shouldnt -- need to be everywhere, but a small patch of your lawn (away from where you normally stay) should be 'given back to nature' A good wilding done to a part of your land can offer more insect density driving a more healthy lawn. Remember we appreciate the top 10% of a lawn. 90% of the action taking place is under dirt. Living just off the forest my lawn is always immaculate. No ferts, no weed pulling, no gopher chasing. If anything it needs to be cut too often...
I totally agree and the fields around me are untouched for the most part, but I really like that idea for anyone. Even if its just a 4' by 4' section for butterflies and other good visitors.
i have used 2 applications of week and feed w/surge and it hasn't killed any weeds... used a heavy application both times. applied 36 hours after mowing and watered 12 hours after application.... grass has gotten greener but so have the weeds and none are dying. pretty expensive product for not getting any results... might have to just stick with the tenacity.
I have a clumping fescue dominated lawn. 13,000 sq. Feet. Should I just kill it and start over in the spring? Any info would be great. Been a sub for years and love the information you give us.
Hey Cymbal, unsure if you’ll see this but new subscriber here! I’m going through this process; got a new house in 2022 and with a baby the lawn just got ignored. I have a few questions if you could indulge me! 1. Is that Andersons Surge pretty universal or is it grass dependent? I live in NH and have fescue. 2. If I want to prep in the fall and “finish off” in the spring, how would you divide up the operations? Kill weeds in fall, then this video in spring? 3. Where does dethatch and aerate fit into things? Thank you!!!
Can you suggest to me which is the best lawn type for me? I live in an area that is classified as BSh according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification. In other words, it is considered a hot semi-arid climate. the average annual temperature is 27.2 °C | 81.0 °F. Precipitation here is about 511 mm | 20.1 inches per year.
I have two questions: can it be used on lawns in the southeast? I know some broadleaf herbicides can’t, and I can’t find anything on the Amazon listing that says either way. Second, can it be purchased in a smaller bag? My yard isn’t large and spending $90 on such a big bag seems like a lot to try it out. Thanks in advance for any help, and thank you for all the great content over the years.
Another great video. First video I have seen someone talk about andersons post emergent product. Everyone is always about their pre emergent. Anderson makes great products too. I know pre is best in spring and sometimes late summer going into fall for us warm season grass folks. what I like is you made a video for someone who just moved into a house and have to deal with the weeds now. So what would be a good strategy to use for the pre and most emergent products in a full year calendar? TIA
Regular Joe here that hates wasting money on horrible advice: For the record T-zone liquid form did nothing for me compared to Tenacity and Quinclorac (for crabgrass). I still explore other stuff but a dang good sprayer is a game changer.
Thats great to hear. Tenacity literally made my old lawn beautiful and wiped out my crabgrass problem. Here I have dallisgass very bad and crabgrass only in non-lawn areas so its great to still be able to use the same product. Thanks for this feedback, it is super helpful!
I have to mention dog owners; 2,4-D has been shown in two different studies to greatly increase the chances of bladder cancer in dogs. Even if you don't use it but your neighbors do, much higher risk. Even when used properly. We just had a dog passed from bladder cancer and I won't use 2,4-D again.
Excellent video. I bought the surge fertilizer in video because I have a lot of weeds on my lawn. I also plan on aerating my lawn and adding more seed. What order would you recommend? Can I aerate and then use surge fertilizer and seed afterward? Thanks!
So I just put down 10-10-10 fertilizer in my lawn thinking that will kill or help with my clover/weed issues today , could I still apply this surge after I put down that other stuff?
Hey SC. Love the vids! Your new property is awesome. Please let me know if you want help with beneficial native plants? I can see some really beneficial beautiful species thriving up there.
Hello, Thank you for all your information, your channel has helped me a lot. Could you please let me know (if you can) how long I need to wait to seed after applying The Anderson's weed & Feed? Love your videos and appreciate the knowledge you're sharing! Have an ugly lawn in western MA that I'm hoping to improve following your approach. (Is that Mt. Cube you can see from your spot?)
my yard is probably 85% weeds so the surge most likely would be best for me (based on your recommendation) however the seed i bought already has fertilizer. would you recommend using a different product or is it okay to use the surge first before seeding with what i’ve already purchased?
I'd like to use Surge on my lawn. I really could use it, but I also would like to overseed it in a few weeks. How close together can I apply Surge before I overseed?
Absolutely, I will be overseeding in a few days. There is no effect on seed. Just dont spray on the lawn once the new seed has sprouted, you need to wait 6 weeks after sprouting before spraying again but before that, there is no issue
@@SilverCymbal Thank you so much for responding. I'm going to hold off on tenacity for this season because I'm a newbie but I'm definitely going to put surge down and I want to make sure that I could still overseed in a few weeks if I did it now.
Great turn around Silver. Now with the bigger property will you be looking into maybe a Perma-Green or is this still manageable with a backpack sprayer and spreader.
Yes, while they are an amazing machine, they won't handle the extreme slopes I have at the edge of the lawn. You can see what I am using here, not sure this will be the final mower but its AWD and so far hasn't tipped yet! ruclips.net/video/HH2XpH7BgoQ/видео.html
How do you protect other plants and trees adjacent to the lawn from getting nixed? I was thinking of just covering everything in cardboard for a couple days, but am curious if you have a particular method.
So, start with the fertilizer with Surge and then move on to the Tenacity to follow up and kill any remaining weeds? Do these products kill those cursed sticker weeds? Those weeds that have the little green, pointy stickers growing on them. We have some of those on the front lawn.

I’m going to give this a try, thank you! BUT, how long before the dog and kids can go out in the lawn??? 😊
?
Is there a better time of year to use the surge or can I use it anytime?? Thank you
Exactly what I needed to know. Thanks!
Silver,
I’m in zone 7b.
Is this something I can do in the middle of summer? Should I start this at end of summer for my zone?
It doesnt -- and shouldnt -- need to be everywhere, but a small patch of your lawn (away from where you normally stay) should be 'given back to nature'
A good wilding done to a part of your land can offer more insect density driving a more healthy lawn.
Might try the weed and feed, but can you loan me your $1,400 broadcast spreader for the weekend? Wow!
Do you recommend Surge solely in the spring, or is a fall application beneficial too?
I’m in the south so we have to use sod any tips on low cost lawn renovation for laying sod?
3-foot grass sounds nice to me. The grass I've been cutting is taller than me, and I'm over 6 feet tall! LoL!
Great info
Always great info thanks again brother
Can you suggest to me which is the best lawn type for me? I live in an area that is classified as BSh according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification.
In other words, it is considered a hot semi-arid climate. the average annual temperature is 27.2 °C | 81.0 °F. Precipitation here is about 511 mm | 20.1 inches per year.
For strictly post-emergent weed control, Speedzone is probably better than Tenacity, and I would guess cheaper.
Tenacity is also a pre-emergent, so you might want to apply it to the whole lawn.
What’s a good weed killer for horse herb? I live in south Texas
Thank You, Great info to save $$$
Glad it was helpful!
TIA
If I have a lot of weeds but smaller yard can I just use tenacity all over instead of the Andersen product?
Yeah I believe so. He used the Anderson’s to cover a larger area of land
Great videos sir. I applied Surge by Andersons a week ago, how long do I wait to overseed my lawn. Thank you
How soon after spreading the weed and feed can you go and spray tenacity? Then how soon after that should you apply the grass seeds?
Regular Joe here that hates wasting money on horrible advice:
For the record T-zone liquid form did nothing for me compared to Tenacity and Quinclorac (for crabgrass).
How often can you apply tenacity? How long should you wait in between applications?
I have to mention dog owners; 2,4-D has been shown in two different studies to greatly increase the chances of bladder cancer in dogs. Even if you don't use it but your neighbors do, much higher risk. Even when used properly. We just had a dog passed from bladder cancer and I won't use 2,4-D again.
Excellent video. I bought the surge fertilizer in video because I have a lot of weeds on my lawn. I also plan on aerating my lawn and adding more seed. What order would you recommend? Can I aerate and then use surge fertilizer and seed afterward? Thanks!
Grate Video. Thank You.
Any suggestion for a different brand, or things to look for, if Andersons isn't available for purchase in Canada?
Hello, Thank you for all your information, your channel has helped me a lot. Could you please let me know (if you can) how long I need to wait to seed after applying The Anderson's weed & Feed? Also, how long after a tenacity treatment before seed can be spread? I looked on the lables, but could not find the information. Thank you
My yard looks exactly like this. My question to you is what season do i start and put down the Andersons surge weed and feed?
Nice video! This is exactly what I needed to hear. BTW? Did you get rid of the Walker Mower you had?
Yes, while they are an amazing machine, they won't handle the extreme slopes I have at the edge of the lawn. You can see what I am using here, not sure this will be the final mower but its AWD and so far hasn't tipped yet! ruclips.net/video/HH2XpH7BgoQ/видео.html
I just noticed the SURGE Fertilizer isn't for sale or use in Nassau or Suffolk County in NY which is where I live. I wonder why.
It's available on Amazon
My house use well water for drinking. Would these products ok for that?
How do you protect other plants and trees adjacent to the lawn from getting nixed? I was thinking of just covering everything in cardboard for a couple days, but am curious if you have a particular method.
So, start with the fertilizer with Surge and then move on to the Tenacity to follow up and kill any remaining weeds? Do these products kill those cursed sticker weeds? Those weeds that have the little green, pointy stickers growing on them. We have some of those on the front lawn.
Is it too late to put Tenacity down and then reseed ? 5a
