how to steam/froth milk with breville barista express | a beginner's guide

  • hi guys,
this video is mainly intended for beginners like me who just got their barista express machine. disclaimer, this is not a latte art tutorial. this is just me sharing what method i used to learn steaming/frothing at home.
sure there's a lot of tutorial videos out there that you can find, i also watched almost all of them. but one thing i noticed is that, they always say "introduce air until you start to FEEL the pitcher getting warm"... how do i know that? i mean i can't feel the pitcher by just watching the video, right? so i figured i need to have a visual parameter, and for me it's the TIME (watch the video so you'll understand).
i'm not saying that this is the absolute guide. what i'm hoping is that through this video, i can somehow help you figure out how to steam/froth and start from there. 😌
    hope this one helps!
    happy pouring!

I would really appreciate it if you can support me by NOT SKIPPING THE ADS. So then I can afford to buy more coffee beans and tools for my home café setup. Thank you! 😁

This is exactly what I needed…most videos show steaming on professional boilers with instant on and full steam…which create microfoam in about 5 seconds…this is so much more realistic to the way I brew at home on my Breville. The timer was the key…thank you thank you thank you.

I learned a lot here. I thought we needed to stop adding air at a certain temp. Makes sense that we can control the texture of the milk with the amount of time we incorporate the air. Of course it also depends on how much milk you start with. This is very helpful, thank you!

For Sage Barista Express owners still struggling: The first bit where you add the air and increase the volume of the milk is incredibly important. If you don't do enough of this you won't get anywhere and it won't matter what you do afterwards. I've been doing this with Oatly oat milk, and I have to do the first bit of adding air for a good 40-45 seconds MINIMUM. I can then start to see the volume of the milk increase by around 10-20%. That's when I know I've added enough air, and I can move to the next bit and lower the wand to create the vortex until it comes to the right temperature. Play around with the first stage and see how long you need to do it for, might take a few tries and you might go through a few cartons of milk before you get the hang of it!
If you're finding that your milk is always too thin at the end, this is probably your issue.
I hope this helps someone out there, as it was driving me mad!

This has surely got to be the best tutorial for frothing milk with this machine. I have had 0 success yet at doing any half decent latte art with this coffe maker having watched countless videos, most using frother capabilities much better then sage/breville's. The distinct/longer air introducing phase makes sense for this weaker frother. Thank you!

*Update* Tried it 3 times today and it didn't work.
Thank you so much! I’ve watched a couple of videos and learned the technique (tip of the wand in, wait for jug to warm, lift the jug up) but I’d always mess up! It wasn’t any clear direction and I’d hope for the best. I love that you’ve shown it with a clear glass cup and that you’ve shown what a cappuccino looks like and why you would create watery milk. I like that you’ve shown the moment when air when getting in because I never knew. I’m trying this tomorrow and fingers crossed I get it right! I’ll update you! Thank you
