What's that age old saying? "You get what you pay for!!" Another great review. Can't get enough of the channel !
Hi sir thanks for the video, since there doesn't seem to be the same problem on the luxory trim this of the video is comfort trim?
it looks like it could be a calibration issue with the 3 speed / electric motor pairing, torque limiting the electric motor from that first gearchange, only as smart as the numpty who coded it, its got good potential there
That’s pretty fast 💨
Until it Breaks, Modern MGs are throw away cars for a throw away generation

@@YZJB how do you know it doesnt
The car seems like a mixed bag so far, according to a couple reviews I've seen.
It has some great points, but the quirky powertrain with that advertised power is ultimately disappointing. Guess the car is fine for normal driving, just don't expect the performance of the paper specs. I think overall it's a good contender for a supermini class.
Nice review!
To not have the acceleration you expect just all of a sudden randomly is Very Dangerous.
Is there a shortcut to desactivate the assistance on this car?
Isnt it because for the test the battery wasn't full enough for giving you the extra Kw during the whole acceleration test ?? Did you check the battery level and is that something you have in the display ?
Well if it was that, it is still very weird because back-to-back runs produced different results, in random order, as shown in the video.
Also, no other hybrid I've tested behaves like this; you can repeatedly run a Corolla hybrid for at least 5 or 6 tests with no noticeable difference in performance, potentially more; I usually only do around 5-6 back-to-back runs, trying the different drive modes etc.
That vehicle wasn’t having a battery recharge issue, and the battery didn’t have sufficient charge? But it shouldn’t cut normal engine output.
Have you found a way to hack into or just access the android operating system to make improvements?
Is the hybrid engine similar to mg vs?
I think the mg vs still has a better gearbox, strangely after 120 km and above it starts to lose that much power.
Funny story I test drove a work mates MG4 XPOWER, and I was completely blown away by the performance, it honestly looks like some Asian grandmothers daily grocery shopper cart, one look at it and you’d think it’s just another cheap run-off-the mill chinese MG car. I was being tailgated by a brash dude in a C63s AMG, he wanted to overtake me so he immediately changed to the lane besides mine and gunned it past and cut off the guy in front of him before we both reached the red traffic light, my work colleague who I’ve known for a few years now told me I want you to floor it at the lights and beat this guy, I was very hesitant at first because it’s not my car but he insisted, I put the car in its highest power mode to get the full beans, so as predicted the guy in the Merc floored it off the lights as did I, and I was surprised at how I left him for dead off the line with the sudden burst of electric power as he struggled for traction with his RWD setup, but he was right on my tail but wasn’t exactly gaining to get past me, we both reached the next set of traffic lights and he pulled he asked us if our car was modified and what sort of car it was, we told him it was stock as bone and it’s electric and it’s an MG, his face went from being all smug to complete humiliation, I could tell his ego was hurt bad knowing his 200k AMG was destroyed by a 60k MG, I know exactly how he felt because I’ve been on the opposite end of those a couple times myself.
I have seen your MG at the Winter Nationals.😅
"looks like some Asian grandmothers daily grocery shopper cart" should have left it at that mate......yeah sure, I'd still take the AMG Merc any day....and these days you're only going to grid up at the traffic light drags next to an EV that will blow the silly little MG away......
@@Mexxx65 mate I’d take the Merc too, but the performance of that little MG is like a rocketship, not many cars will beat it off the mark, how many cars can do 0-100 in 3.8 seconds for under 60k, you need to spend well over double if not triple the money to have that sort of performance, the Kia EV6 GT/Hyundai IONIQ 5 N is more my cup of tea that does the 0-100 sprint in the same time bracket but you need to fork out well over 110k for them and I’m not sure people will be willing to spend that sort of money on them.
I prefer performance sedans over anything but you’ve got to give credit where credit is due, alot of the car brands that use to be laughing stocks only a few years ago are now catching up and changing the game, Hyundai and Kia are classic examples of this, there cars were seen as nothing more but a budget brand of cheap cars and now they’re a premium brand that compete with the Europeans in terms of looks, luxury as well as have a strong reputation in the performance division with their N divinsion and Kia’s GT cars respectively.
It’s good to see MG pushing the boundaries too, it makes other manufacturers who have had it easy for far too long to push themselves and bring out better cars to compete in the market. MG was a joke and now it’s beating supercars such as classic Lamborghini’s and the first gen Nissan R35 GTR, just have a quick search on carwow.
@@russell3436You are comparing apples to oranges. Electric acceleration is completely different. The Lamborghini and Nissan examples you gave along with the previously mentioned Merc AMG would offer better handling, breaking, driver enjoyment and styling. There's little to no point in comparing the two. Beware the build quality of the MG4. There is a reason the cost is lower than alternatives. The X Power isn't as expensive as some but it isn't exactly cheap and the standard MG4 has crept up in price whilst other manufacturers have dropped down a little to match it
Poi ti sei svegliato tutto sudato
That reeks of it being underdone - I thought at first it was some sort of thermal protection cos of how you were driving it (which would be bad enough) but then it randomly comes good... A vehicle that suddenly loses power in an overtaking situation is downright dangerous. If they all behave like that they need to be recalled.
Yeah, the randomness of it is a bit worrying. Other hybrids that I’ve tested under the exact same procedure have been fine.
Seems like this behaviour is caused by the 3 spd transmission.
At nearly 110kmh it shifts up, the gears are too long so it drops the rpm significantly and you lose all the engine power.
3 speed transmission in 2024 is a joke even if it's helped out by an electric motor
@@michaelcampbell4990
I agree, but this hybrid heavily relies on the electric motor, and the engine mostly acts as a generator, so I don't think the 3 spd transmission is a big issue.
@@michaelcampbell4990 because under 80km/h it is all powered by a electric motor, why you need that much gear?
@@ramqashou1002 but you can literally see at 110 kmh it loses half it's power because the gear ratio jump is too much for the engine and it bogs down under full throttle. It's dangerous to have a car which gives heaps of power up to that speed and then just dies halfway through an overtake
@@billshi6005 well you can see acceleration from 0-60 kmh is pretty slow, and then there's a big gap in the power band from 110-130 (which is critical when overtaking). I know it's not meant to be a performance car but it would be very frustrating to own one and have all these gaps in available power due to the 3 speed system.
More MG hybrid SUVs will come to Australia market later with much more higher performance 0-60mph in 6.8S
I was looking at the MG4 last year as a potential entry to the EV market but the laggy display, lack of physical off buttons for the driving aids, inconsistent driving assists software reported by owners detracted me from buying one. This looks like a reasonable purchase, however again, suffers from compromises that just doesn't push it over the line. Will it have over the air update to fix the acceleration issue? MG appear to drag their feet when it comes to developing improved software post sales it seems.
I’ve got an MG4, the infotainment is clunky and hard to navigate, but everything else is great. That is my only real gripe. It is a fun car to drive and feels solid on the road.
Suprisingly quick. I reckon these will sell well
So You have regen at low and like to cruise/keep going yet complain about 5.9l/100k...
Yes. A Toyota Camry hybrid, which is heavier and has no regen options, can achieve low 5s and even dip into 4s. Under the same conditions. That’s why I think this is high.
@@drivingenthusiastaustralialol sure
@@dodomcguy5831 We've tested it. But even if you take the official consumption figure; 4.5L/100km for the top-spec SL. This MG is 4.3L/100km - only marginally lower. Shouldn't it be a lot lower considering the Camry hybrid is around 300kg heavier?
Sounds like a bad case of sour grapes and brand snobbery from some people.A Chinese made MG that can humiliate most expensive European sports cars really gets under some people's skin. Welcome to the modern era ladies and gentlemen. Suck it up tough boys when grandma in her little MG blows the doors off your modified Commodores and falcons.
This dinky little thing is gonna beat my i30 N-Line at the lights every time 🤦♂️
😅
And my i20N unless I get the shifts on point 🤣
don’t worry man, those will break down way before your N-Line. The only thing it’s beating is how fast it makes it to the repair shop
@@crez1988Lol no
@@crez1988 source
English reviewers have gotten 3.8L/100km on 100kmh roads, so..
MG love
Price is too expensive.
Ive been saying for ages its about time we see more higher powered hybrid vehicles. This powertrain with tuning or whatever the issue is fixed with sports suspension, better wheels and tyres coulf be rather good.
Like what Honda did with the HEV Civic or the Cupra plug in.
Even toyota is starting to head down that path with the top spec CHR AWD
Agree. There is definitely lots of potential here too. Sports suspension, better wheels/tyres as you said would create a very tempting package that’s efficient and fun.
@@drivingenthusiastaustralia more 7 second or less 0-100km/h cars with 5L/100 economy please!
That plastic EGR pipe looks like a display of longevity… 😅
Dans une utilisation de tous les jours, qui accélère ainsi de zéro à cent pied au plancher ??
Vous avez raison. Cette voiture est parfaite. Veuillez excuser ma mauvaise analyse.
Terrible braking with 42m...
thats plenty fast for old doris to get to woolies
😅
Isn’t it meant to put out 155kW? Why does the gauge never read higher than 125kW? What a weird drivetrain with seemingly shit calibration
Yeah, I'm not sure why the power was capped on this model. Maybe there are some software updates on the way for customer cars - this was an early Aus-spec press car.
thats the max output. No hybrid reads max output unless the battery is really high, on sport mode and full throttle.
@@philipchouliaras5879 I’ve timed other hybrids with no issue. A standard Camry hybrid, for example, returns similar results with repeated runs.
@@drivingenthusiastaustralia difference is this changes the dirving profile automatically. It is bound to not give the same results in tests. The driving experience wont change in a meaningful way anyway.
I didnt speak about the consistency, i said that no full hybrid give 100% of the power all the time.
Not bad for a shopping trolly.
If you think of it. why it won't give you the full power. Battery
In 3rd gear you are pretty much ice only.
If they were gonna copy Mazda 3, they should have done that right, instead of this half assed job
My 20 year old Fiat Punto 1.3 mtj has better fuel economy 😂
your fiat pundo can do 4.8 ltr on 130kph? damn bro pulling off some witchcraft
That ugly squared steering wheel has to go first.........and since when is scratchy hard plastic everywhere....good build quality? Still has the cheap rough-riding torsion beam rear suspension....and having to run this new Hybrid model on 95-pemium...false fuel economy?
At the start of your driving stint…..what the F is going on with your roads? They’re worse than our NZ ines and they’ve been neglected for ages
That’s nothing. Most roads, especially in Victoria, are royally f***** at the moment
Australian roads are the same quality as 3rd world countries
This car is just weird all over. I will give a hard pass on this one. Especially that inconsistent drivetrain........no way i rather take any full ICE over that hybrid.
That has to be the worst transmission ever made.
Ma chi te lo dice vacca madonna
To be fair that transmission is 50 years old. First used by GM in the 70s
Im really hoping these chinese cars take over and everyone has to buy from china.
China #1 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Go away troll
Still prefer my 2020 Kia Rio 1.4 ... better looking, bigger space...
