I love the video for this song. One reason is that it was directed by God-like genius David Fincher. The other reason is that the moment when Paz puts her bass down, ties her hair up, and starts playing again is one of the sexiest things I have ever seen.

Her brain aneurysm happened when Maynard was 11 yrs old, which he refers to in the Tool song Jimmy. Then the 10,000 days she spent paralyzed before death. And yes, this song was clearly coming from an angry place, but several years later when he made the 10,000 Days album, he showed that he let go of a lot of that anger and focuses on the positive effects she’s had on his life, praises her strength, etc.

    • @GoldTop57
      @GoldTop57 5 лет назад +11

I should clarify. He let’s go of much of the anger towards her, but still has frustration with the religious communities as a whole.

@@GoldTop57 if you listen carefully there is a lot of Christian theology on his lyrics specially Tool, He respects Christianity since it's his own mother's believes that help Maynard a lot trough years of pain specially after he got an eye opening of the rough reality of people, religions and society at a young age.

I know this song can be uncomfortable for some people to hear due to the lyrics . Once you understand where the song comes from and why he curses God it's a very personal look into his mental state after experiencing a very traumatic event in his life . The anger is not held back and its honest and the anger is very real . Weither its misplaced is irrelevant. It's real and beautiful in it's own way that he could be so vulnerable with expressing his feelings .

Agreed. Not sure but I wouldn't be suprised if he wrote these lyrics long before Wings for Marie. But if you listen to them (Judith and Wings) back to back, you get a fuller sense of his feelings. There's definitely anger and resentment there, but also, there's an appreciation, admiration, and even awe, on his part when thinking about HER faith, whether he shares the same beliefs or not.

His mother, Judith, had a cerebral aneurysm when Maynard was 11, which left her paralyzed and basically a shell of what she used to be. She lived in this state for roughly 10,000 days or 29+ years before she died. This song was written I think 6-7 years before her death. There is some commentary from Maynard on what he was thinking about when he wrote this song. Link below:

My favorite APC song. Just amazing! Definitely could have been a Tool song. I hope they do a cover sometime! Too late now, but listening to this song without words for the first time vs. seeing the words will probably give very different reactions. Personally I didn't see the words for a long time and then we I saw them I completely understood Maynard's angst. You guys looked so bummed listening. If you didn't concentrate on the words you'd be diving into the amazing music, but the words have you quite stunned, and sad. His mother Judith Marie suffered from a paralyzing debility & was confined to a wheelchair for over 25 years, which is around 10,000 Days. You will find the next 2 songs Wings For Marie/10,000 Days to be quite different from Judith. Perhaps Progressive Rock in a nutshell. I believe Maynard's writing gave him a great release from the pain he felt towards his mother's fate, G*d rest her soul.
Yes, Wings for Marie/10,000 Days should be listened to ASAP. #TOOL #WINGSFORMARIA #10000DAYS #ASAP

That's why I'm subscribed to the channel, you two are nothing more then who you are, great people. The key to everything is Authenticity.
Judith, MJKs mother had an Annieryism, was invalent for 10k days before her passing. The Tool song Jimmy is about moving from Ohio to Michigan with his dad after it happened (Jimmy is MJKs legal first name), Judith is about his mother's unwavering faith despite her grim overall outlook, finally Wings for Marie Part 1 and 2 by Tool is his goodbye to her. Performed during the 2006-2007 tour, MJK is on record saying he does have some regrets mourning so publicly, as a OGT fan, it's a safe bet that Wings will never be played live again, despite it being one of their most epic pieces of music to date. Most Tool fans it will make you cry every single time you listen to it. It's just one of the thousands of things that make them so incredibly special.
Once you guys see the entire Tool Discography as a whole, it's really gonna make you appreciate them that much more.
    Opiate - Anger
    Undertow - Working through Anger
Aenima - Pscyhedelic Prog aspect starts taking hold, the beginning of enlightenment, as the album ends with 3rd Eye.
Lateralus - To me represents the process of a Kundalini Awakening
10000 Days - Using the Enlightenment achieved to view the world for what it is.
New Album - Based on Descending as a preview, I'm guessing a possible album theme of our Souls journey leaving this Dimension.

Maynard was angry because his mother was full of faith, she never wavered and never thought of anything but what was actually happening. Maynard's Mother was a big believer in Christ and when she got really sick and her church mocked her, he took this in a very hostile way. He was so angry to why her god would punish her when she was so loyal and so obedient. This song goes so much deeper than just words.

Wikipedia: Keenan's mother suffered a paralyzing cerebral aneurysm in 1976, when Maynard was 11 (the inspiration for creative works such as Tool's songs "jimmy" and "Wings for Marie" as well as A Perfect Circle's "Judith"). She was very religious. those lines man "its not like you killed someone....it's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side". There are some great vocal techniques tooK the beautiful mix in "he did it all for youuuuuuu" the distortion at the end. this can be hard to listen to - even blasphemous i suppose. this was him processing his mom's illness, 10,000 days (27 years roughly) of suffering, and passing. a catharsis if you will. I'm not religious....but i hope she got her wings.

Maynard was angry that she still kept her faith in her religion alive, as he thought God was the one that caused her pain and suffering. Now you need to react to Wings For Marie and 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2).

Theres alot to unpack in this song, it's one of my favorites. It's not just about anger, hes pointing something out, something that Christians rarely allow themselves to contemplate. "Ur sunch an inspiration for the ways that I will never choose to be."

If ever you listen to anything Maynard related, you can’t make a surface reaction and expected to understand or know what the song is truly about. I understand this is what reaction videos are about, but Maynards stuff (no matter what group he’s heading) is the exception. It’s crazy how even though this song has been out for along time, people still get the meaning wrong or rush to judgement. Search RUclips for “A Perfect Circle - Judith (Maynard commentary)”. He explains very clearly he was writing about the “ghouls” & hypocrisy in religion (his mothers church). He was not saying F@&k “God”, but “their god”. Their god who said that his mother must have been a sinner and not good and deserved what she was going through mentally - physically. Her church & friends would be kind and nice in front of her but disparage her behind her back. God = light & love, he loves all, but religion (or religious groups) take that and then preach conditions on that love and take it upon themselves to say who is worthy of it, who’s good, who’s bad. And even faced with all of that, his mothers faith was unwavering & true. THIS is what he was singing out and why he was no mad. ruclips.net/video/YU0BrwlWNTk/видео.html

    Hi guys🙋🏽‍♂️
I don't think there's another song (imo) that divides fans of hard rock more than "Judith" by MJ and his band A Perfect Circle. In its purest form it's an awesome hard hitting in your face hard rock song but it becomes so much more than that when we hear the lyrics. I know some ppl that refuse to listen to it because they consider it blasphemy and at the complete other end of the spectrum there's ppl who listen to it inspite of it being blasphemous. Then there's me, a person who listens to it because it does what any great song does....it draws its listeners in by painting a picture of exactly what the composer of the song was/is going through at a specific point in time...in this case what Maynard was going through emotionally over a 25+ year period of watching his beloved Mom suffer the consequences of something she had absolutely no control over. I can't think of another song that generates such emotion when ppl hear it for the first time.

You forgot Jimmy. In the right order, Jimmy would be the first song of the "Maynards Mom Songs"... then Judith and then Wings & 10.000 days... hope you will get to Jimmy soon. It's the starting point, were he decides to deal with his pain and anger, what he has never done until then. By the way, take a look at the original video of Judith, it's awesome. Judith had a stroke and lived for about 10.000 days in a wheelchair, more or less paralized.

She had an aneurysm when he was 11. She lived for 10000 days as an invalid. His anger was directed at the church of which his mother was a congregation member. They would come tell his mother how strong in faith she was, but behind her back talk about her. He saw that as hypocrisy and he was talking to their God, not the God. It was directed at a certain congregation.
