I haven’t watched the DVD but had the privilege of being at this show. I don’t think anyone realized it was being recorded and I was blown away when I heard about the dvd/album.
I think one of APC's most beautiful songs is "Gravity", it's spare and haunting and full of a spiritual resolve that speaks to me. After I lost my only son to alcoholism this song's line "I choose to live" gave me strength to carry on both for myself and for my son's memory.
This song is actually referring to when he was asked to take his mother off life support... Incredibly powerful the sentiment contained within this song
This song was written three years before his mother's death, but I do think it's about his relationship with her, namely the love/hate relationship (the love he had for her, the hate he had for her decision to cling to faith).
Horizons by Puscifer is a beautiful song he wrote about his mother. Specifically about spreading her ashes in his vineyard. The calm, accepting tone in his voice is something else.
song is about so much more than familial relationship. (wings, aenema, momma sed, etc etc etc...). it's more universal ...("unconditional one") than that
I think you’re ready for the younger Maynard performing Sober live with Tool from the early 90s. That’s a powerful early performance. Hope you check it out!
This live recording, the sound, the visuals, Maynards vocals and the whole band are totally on point. This is so beautiful, powerful and emotionally provoking it can almost bring you to tears. The whole gig in full is a ride!
to be honest this would be the first time I hear, that Maynard was abused by his mother. that would not match at all how he describes her in other songs. I always thought the song was about euthanaisa / assisted dying. His mother is in pain and he has to decide if he frees her from it. and he is still pondering and does not want to say goodbye ("give me one more medicated peaceful moment"). if he does't, he is partly responsible for her agony and if he does, he has to live with the fact hat he killed his mom. he is in a "dammed if you do - dammed if you don't" predicament, just like Orestes was.
I am almost certain the abuse came from his dad. That's why he felt so abandoned by his mom in the beginning( as crazy as it is, kids of divorce blame mom for dad leaving ECT. Even tho it is not her fault he felt abandoned that mom sent him to dad even though he must have known she couldn't care for him the way she could before) and like in Jimmy he had to realize his feelings and come home to his mom....
From what I have heard, the abuse was from his step father, before his mother was paralyzed and he was sent off at 11. I can’t quote where I heard it from, nor can I say that it is true.
Great Selection! For APC I’d also suggest “3 Libras”, another Tool suggestion would have to be the Live version of “Pushit” off the Salival album. it’s an amazingly emotional song about a Toxic relationship
Pushit is an amazing song. I like the Aenima version better but both are great. However, pushit is about addiction. Any song can have any meaning to anyone though. She should still listen to pushit.
Can't wait to be part of another first reaction! Your journey and discovery has become my journey of re-discovery!!! Thank you for this wonderful unexpected experience!
We feel music in our bones and our veins, and this song rattles every internal part. Kudos to this lady too, it’s truly feels like I’m feeling this along with her in how she is falling into the music.
You should check out the Deftones song "Passenger" it features Maynard in the song and him and Chino Moreno the lead singer for Deftones sound awesome on that song.
I feel like “keeping me from killing you” is literally about Maynard ending his moms life. One more medicated peaceful moment makes me feel like this is about Maynard making the decision to end his mothers suffering. Working in the medical field I’ve been a witness to these moments many times and it’s humbling hearing this experience from those directly affected.
Orestes was a greek tragedy, orestes dad (agamenon) was murdered by his wife and lover, Orestes didn't have a vengeful soul, so he continued his life away from his mother and stepfather. One day, the god Apollo appeared to him and ordered him to avenge his father, which he did. However, matricide was a serious sin, and the gods punished him for it. Very accurate song title IMO.
I feel lucky to have been able to talk to him several times as I saw him shop at the grocery store I was working at for a while. Such a humble friendly guy
Maynard's voice agility is crazy! His emotive way tares into your heart with such amazing clarity. A Perfect Circle is one of my favorite projects EVER!! You Absolutely have to listen to 3 Libras, The Noose, The Doomed... oh man, their entire library is well... Perfect. Thank you!
It's like all these albums that I used to listen to a lot for certain times in my life have been misplaced in my life experience. You remind me of music I had forgotten that I enjoyed so much once. So thank you and enjoy your journey. You are so very lucky you live in this age where this is all available at your fingertips!
I've been listening to Tool since the early 90s and then A Perfect Circle since the formed, and I will say that they have never felt dated to me. I'm the kind of listener who connects with the music first, and it takes me a long time to hear, digest and understand the lyrics, possibly because I'm dyslexic, so Tool and A Perfect Circle unfolded for me slowly over many years, but they are a couple of the few bands (in addition to the band "Alice in Chains" which I would highly recommend to you too) that have really lasted the test of time for me, and I find myself continually returning to them with new insights and new meanings as my life progresses and changes... I'm sure many people experience this too. Tool, APC, Alice in Chains... are bands that encapsulate a kind of poetic truth from very personal experiences that transcend the genres they come out, and that's why they are still so good and relevant today IMO. As far as I know, Billy Howerdel, the guitarist who sings, writes the music, and Maynard writes the lyrics to the music. Billy was the guitar tech for Adam Jones, who's the guitarist for Tool, and Maynard overheard some of the music he was writing and wanted to collaborate. Billy initially was envisioning a female vocalist for his project, but Maynard wanted to be part of it, and it turned out that it worked out. Josh Freese, the drummer is a highly talented session drummer that's played drums on a lot of records, but his drummer on APC's first album "Mer De Noms" is some of the greatest drumming I've ever heard... The Drums on the opening track "The Hollow" is just phenomenal. As for the guitar playing, something that Tool, A Perfect Circle, Pusifer and Alice in Chains share is that the guitars are first and foremost played in a way that assists the identities of the songs without standing out as being played for the sake of showing off technical ability, if that makes sense.
Tim Alexander (Herb from Primus) was the original APC drummer and he recorded “The Hollow” on the album. Josh Freese played on the rest of the album. I agree that the drumming on this album is spectacular! Both drummers are two of my all time favorites!
This guys are top notch musicians and, of course, Maynard is one of the best rock vocalists (and Billy's voice complements his so well). And one of the most unique frontmen when he's on stage, I mean, look at him on the back of the stage moving like Quasimodo from The hunchback of Notre Dame 😀
Good on you for letting it play the last few measures. Such a wild ride - fun to watch you take a spin! Thanks for the reaction. Unreal live performance.
I've been listening to this man sing for almost 30 years now (yeah that long) and I think this might be the best performance I have ever heard him give on a record, live on a recording or live in person. It's crazy because I only discovered this version maybe a few months ago lol. I slept on this performance because I've heard (and own) so many live versions I thought that I'd heard it all. Can't believe I missed this this long.
MJK is a true enigma in our time. May we never meet our heroes! Because honestly if I got made fun of by my hero, I'd have a lot of re-evaluating to do privately, but I am brittle like that, LOL.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this one!!! One of my fav Maynard songs, just sucks you in. "I don't wanna feel this overwhelming hostility"!!! The Outsider is a absolute must too
They say Tool is Maynard’s heart, A Perfect Circle is his heart and Puscifer is his privates. Speaking of Puscifer check out Potions, Trent Reznor(NIN) did some work on it. Also for more Maynard, checkout Passenger by Deftones
Wonderful reaction vid as always. I agree on the guitar crying and it almost brings me to tears every time. The voices and guitar high notes, just wow. Incredible melodies. Right in the feels. Loving your journey with Maynard 🖤
Haven't listened to too much APC, so the very emotional tone to this one kind of surprised me. Feels different from other emotionally charged Tool/APC songs. That instrumental break, for example. I haven't heard a Tool song with that kind of feeling.
I really enjoy being part of your journey through Maynard's repertoire. If I can suggest another corner of his personality, he wrote a beautiful song with Puscifer, which is Grand Canyon. His version his great but strangely I dig the one by Brass Against. I hope you will listen to it and enjoy as much as me.
There is a fourth and final song to the “Maynard’s mom” saga. It is always overlooked as part of the story. It is a Puscifer song he wrote about scattering his mother’s ashes. It’s called Horizons. I’m so surprised so many do not acknowledge this song as the final song in the saga. Whatever the case, you really should add that to the end.
Been listening to tool since 1996 and Maynard continues to amaze me even today. I also perceive 2 different singers when listening to TOOL or A perfect circle, just like you. The way he can "switch" personalities/voice/style, from one band to another, is very very cool.
@@lizperry2322 read again. We are not comparing bands here Liz. This is only about Maynard´s multiple "characters". If you want to discuss tool vs apc, lets do privately.

And I’ve been to at least 100 there!!!❤️🌀👁. Definitely check out Peace love and understanding live at red rocks.. same show.. Billy singing.. it’s one of my favorites!!!
Maynard gets a lot of love but don't forget about Billy he has an old side project called ashes divide that's also incredible and has a new solo album coming out soon definitely worth checking out
This live show was recorded brilliantly and sounds amazing. Every song has a little something extra in it in the live setting. Explore any song on this CD you won't be disappointed with any of them. you're doing amazing Aileen
Great interpretation of this song. I’ve been watching your channel because of your discovery of Opeth, but I’m glad I caught this video and your reaction as well! Subscribed !

The one thing I haven’t seen you react to yet (as far as I can see) is Baby Metal. If you have never seen them please react to Road Of Resistance by them, you will not be disappointed.
have fun experiencing those songs for the first time. if you wanna get deeper into the rabbit hole try wolves in the throne room with the song i will lay down my bones among the rocks and roots. a bit long but strong atmosphere if you jump in mentally
Can't wait. There are a few more live performances by a Perfect Circle you'll need to check out live from the Jay Leno show three Libras and The outsider
I just realised it has been twenty years since I have seen them play live for the first time. 20(!) And I was today years old when I found out Josh Freese was on drums 😶
Great song from a great performance by a great band! If I may add; "The Outsider", "When the Levee Breaks" & "By & Down". All are from the same Stone & Echo performance & many HD versions are floating around youtube. Really like your channel!
You've said before that you have a tendency to overthink, to which I can relate. But your overthinking leads you to hear things in these songs and see things in these videos that I often overlook, so that's one reason I really like your reactions lol Another reason is that you have a very expressive face that conveys your emotions really well, and it makes it easy to read what you're feeling and thinking while listening to the music
Amazing song, and even more amazing performance. Another one from red rocks is "by and down"....beautifully arranged and performed, well worth checking out!
When it comes to the songs about him and his mother I feel like Jimmy from Tool gets overlooked a bit. Amazing in itself, the vocals have a wonderfully haunting echo to them that I've always loved. Hopefully that gets put on the list. Keep up the great work
I agree regarding being therapeutic. Definitely one I enjoy belting out in the shower to when i need a release. Being an empath too, I got tears from this version. Hadn't listened to it in years, so thank you for sharing. Pushit Salival is a must. Along with Vicarious, Jambi, parabol/parabola, Flood, Aenima, Right in two, and if you're ready then lost keys/Rosetta Stoned. APC thirteenth step is an incredible album. Puscifer have some gems too.
I have been a tool fan for probably longer than you have been in this world and Maynard is my favorite singer ever (next to Rob Flynn from Machine Head - check Now We Die) and you have taught me so many different stories about Maynard and a great interesting perspective of the passion in his voice. Thank you for enhancing my perspective on Maynard and all of his endeavors!
with, a perfect circle, started my journey with his amazing lyrics and the way he performs them. And has of course followed to Tool. Another band where there are very personal lyrics is, Pain of salvation. You should check that out. The passing light of day
Please react to By and Down from this same concert. Also, not from this concert, but any original Live version of 3Libras he sings with such wonderful emotion and a most beautiful song!
Amy Lee from Evanescence does a cover of this song you should listen to. It’s not worth reacting to because the only recorded version of it is very low quality, but I think you’d enjoy it on your own time. Her voice and Maynard’s….I would love to hear a collaboration.
I wish Evanescence did more complex stuff, they stay just outside of the metal category but Amy Lee could probably bring it if she wanted to go heavier.
I've seen APC live three times. Once for each of their major album releases- Mer de Noms, Thirteenth Step, and Eat the Elephant. Every single time it was a transcendental and deeply emotional experience.
Maynard's influence on both Tool and APC really brings the best out in every aspect of the musicianship and performance of the respective groups. The concerts of either band are absolutely the best to see and hear in person.
Highly recommend you listen to Fear:Innoculum in its entirety: tied with Aenema as my favorite Tool albums. 13 years was worth the wait! Also check out Puscifer's Bullet Train to Iowa, Tool's Vicarious and The Pot. Maynard is quite the talent, similar to Trent Reznor. Spiral Out...
I’d highly recommend reacting to 3 Libras. The album version or if it has to be live try to find an old version as they only play the remix version live now. It’s my all time favourite APC track and you’ll understand why when you check it out.
One of their best performances right there!!... Some of Maynards best vocals can be heard with his other band Puscifer. Your first pause at 4:45min was perfect to show James Iha the guitarist from Smashing Pumpkins!... Mike (bass) & Josh (drums) are in Puscifer with Maynard..
I think that first song gets a little bit more intense towards the end and the actual album version also maybe you'll find out sooner or later but also the song Jambi is another song about his mother off the album 10,000 Days
You have such a soothing voice. You could take over the old Casey Kaseem job. I currently have an hr drive to work with no cell service. I downloaded this album this weekend. First time I heard this song was this morning. This is a movie about Work and Maynard and his vineyard. Came out 12 years ago. He mentioned his mother and her ashes
I was blown away when I found out they recorded this show and released it on dvd. I honestly had no idea they were recording, did you know they were recording? I get the chills every time I hear By And Down The River
Hands down one of the best live performances I've ever seen...not just this song, but this entire concert.
It's amazing right. Some of the best musicians playing at their best and just FUCKING KILLING IT
Could not agree more! I must watch it in full nearly monthly.
World class musicians on fire! Nothing like it, the sound guy and the video guy should have won Emmys
I haven’t watched the DVD but had the privilege of being at this show. I don’t think anyone realized it was being recorded and I was blown away when I heard about the dvd/album.
Absolutely 100 percent agree. Saw them open for Nine Inch nails and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Orestes is some of Maynard's best vocal work, hands down.
I think one of APC's most beautiful songs is "Gravity", it's spare and haunting and full of a spiritual resolve that speaks to me. After I lost my only son to alcoholism this song's line "I choose to live" gave me strength to carry on both for myself and for my son's memory.
Totally agree, always brings me to tears listening to gravity!
Yes, Gravity is my favorite on 13th Step, just something about it, the bass line, the ethereal sounding effects on his vocals and the delivery.
I am glad that you found the strength to go through such a difficult loss. Life is worth it

And “Agostina” about his daughter.
Amazing to see someone paying attention to perfect circle. Amazing and criminally under rated band from the 90’s!

Billy Howerdel and Maynard do harmonize together so well in APC.
Carina and Maynard's harmonies in Puscifer are even better imo.

I don’t think the abuse was from his mother, more likely from his father.
From what I have heard, the abuse was from his step father, before his mother was paralyzed and he was sent off at 11. I can’t quote where I heard it from, nor can I say that it is true.
Why does everyone link this to abuse? Isn’t this song literally about Orestis the son of Agamemnon? He had to kill his mom and it killed him inside.
Maynard is a beast of a vocalist. He can sound like an angel and also scream his head off. So versatile, so amazing! One of the greatest, imo.

Let's not forget Mr. Billy Howerdel was Adam Jone's Guitar Tech.
have fun experiencing those songs for the first time. if you wanna get deeper into the rabbit hole try wolves in the throne room with the song i will lay down my bones among the rocks and roots. a bit long but strong atmosphere if you jump in mentally
Can't wait. There are a few more live performances by a Perfect Circle you'll need to check out live from the Jay Leno show three Libras and The outsider
This is one of my favorite songs from a perfect circle
I just realised it has been twenty years since I have seen them play live for the first time. 20(!) And I was today years old when I found out Josh Freese was on drums
😶
I have goosebumps already.
When it comes to the songs about him and his mother I feel like Jimmy from Tool gets overlooked a bit. Amazing in itself, the vocals have a wonderfully haunting echo to them that I've always loved. Hopefully that gets put on the list. Keep up the great work
pucifer: grand canyon. maynard said that is (if i remember correctly) his favorite song creatively he's been a part of.
as much as i love the live recordings i'd have to say that the correct way to experience this song for the first time is the official music video.
I hadn't seen this version before, thanks for sharing! Loving your Tool / APC journey! Keep em coming :)
The passing light of day
Billy Howerdel is the guitar player/backupsinger. He has a band as well, "Ashes Divide", As well, Billy has a new solo album coming out next month.
Again, 1 of the greatest albums ever recorded. 🔥👍
Maynard once explained his bands as follows: Tool is the masculine, APC is the feminine, and Pucifer is the genitals
Tool is always on my bucket list of bands I wish to see live. But I had the privilege to see APC live, that means a lot more for me.
I remember when this album came out i played it everywhere trying to get the vocals down. Every song was perfect like a circle.
Puscifer has great songs, the remedy, the humbling river, BUT I feel the most emotional and tear jerking song is Horizons
“You speak like someone who has never been smacked in the f***ing mouth” one of my favorite Maynard lines
I agree with Horizons comment
Maynard's influence on both Tool and APC really brings the best out in every aspect of the musicianship and performance of the respective groups. The concerts of either band are absolutely the best to see and hear in person.
When you do the 3 Libras live reaction, the outdoor one where he's wearing a white wig is the best one.
Good to know, thank you! :)
@@AileenSenpai Be sure to react to *H* BY TOOL
It’s such a haunting and beautiful song. It’s my favorite
Man what an awesome show that would have been to see in person.
When it comes to Puscifer, I usually start people with the song Grand Canyon. I believe MJK has said it's one of his favorites that he has written.
I’d highly recommend reacting to 3 Libras. The album version or if it has to be live try to find an old version as they only play the remix version live now. It’s my all time favourite APC track and you’ll understand why when you check it out.
I was sitting lower left hand side of the crowd, on the ledge up front.
This is my personal all time favorite. It takes me on a journey every time I listen with my eyes closed. MJK for life.
That concert is fucking epic. If you react to any other APC tracks, make sure it is from this show.
This performance of Orestes is one of the best things I've ever heard in my whole life.
I was at this show! Definitely up there in best shows I've seen. Red Rocks is always a magical venue to see a show.
I was blown away when I found out they recorded this show and released it on dvd. I honestly had no idea they were recording, did you know they were recording?
I get the chills every time I hear By And Down The River
This is a positive music I love the positive music and the positive fact when you explained by music you're excellent and smart 🤓💕🎶
Under rated song showing of Maynard’s vocals. Perfect Circle “Brena”
Good review. Thank you. Seen them, TOOL & puscifer multiple times with sister . Amazing
