I was sad when Miami Vice ended. I loved this show and living in Miami I used to see the production crews shooting all over Miami and beyond back in it's day. This show could have continued on but for whatever reason it came to and end but to this day nothing has rivaled Vice because it was such an innovative show for it's day and unlike most TV shows where everything is shot on sets, Vice was shot largely on-location which gave it that motion picture feel to it.
    Forever an excellent show!

thebakerman1 i’ve just visited Miami a few weeks ago - a great holiday. But i was wondering about the fact that it’s difficult to go around the city, finding anything that relate to Miami vice (besides the locations). Miami vice had such a Big influence on Miami - the tourism. The series putted Miami on the map as i understand. Then it’s Strange that there aren’t shops or something that provides some MV-stuff... not even the Carlyle which was well used in the series make something out of that fact.??.. do you know why?

Both Don and Phillip were born in 1949. The studios would never buy into 64 year old cops, although I wish Miami Vice would have had a 10 year run at least on NBC. It's amazing when you look back at this show, how many people would stay home on a Friday night just to watch Miami Vice instead of going out. I miss those times.

Tubbs was arguably even cooler than Crockett. In various episodes Crockett becomes quite emotional or erratic, and Tubbs is the one putting him back on track. While the only times Tubbs becomes erratic are in the episodes where he is actually acting a role for a mission.

Even though its sad it didn't get to do at least two more seasons, I'm kind of glad Miami Vice stopped at the brink of the 80s. That show was the epitome of the 1980s, and if the show jumped over to the early 90s for more seasons, it would have lost its essence, what with the change in pop culture and music that the 90s brought. Miami Vice WAS essentially the 80s, and its fitting it went out in the last year of the best decade for music.
I mean just imagine a 1991 season of Miami Vice with rap & new jack swing music, Tubbs with a hi-top fade, Crockett with a Backstreet Boy hair-do, and guest stars like MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice or Heavy D? It would have ruined the show IMO.

+Richard Stevens I absolutely love Season 1 & 2, and some of the season 4 episodes were great too. Season 3 was a let down for me, with Crockett's confused 'spikey mullet' hairstyle, the dark colors and the fluffy jackets. The episodes were always dark too. Season 4 brought back some of Season 2's aesthetic style such as pastels and whites, the return of his wayfarers and his hair was better this time. It's some of the ridiculous episodes that make me shake my head. Season 5 is just all out dark and grim, and I'm not a fan of the dull tones and denim on Crockett.

    • @richardstevens8839
      @richardstevens8839 8 лет назад +2

***** I wasn't a particular fan of Tim Truman, with the dark side in episodes like 'Asian Cut' went a bit too far. I dispute you on season 3 on the contrary, its phenomenal, Red Tape, lend me an Ear, and many others just great.

Filmation77 If they got back to like between season 2 into 3, it would be cool cause there are SOOOO many stories still left to tell. Need “Dick Wolf+Jan Hammer” back and maybe even some fan suggestions regarding plot lines+music. If social media was around back then we’d have gotten at least 3-4 more seasons out of “Michael Mann”. But, greener pastures were sought we’re told, but the only one I’ve seen with any kind of regularity is Don(of course), Edward+Sondra(The .Sopranos, occasionally). Saw an interview with John+Michael and they were warm for a go , as was Olivia. Haven’t seen her in shit since and that’s a shame.

Always leave 'em wanting more. That's how you don't wear out your welcome. If you hang around to bleed the life out of a show, people tire of it (and will resent you for running it into the ground just for the cash it generated). I seem to recall other shows DJ did before and after "Nash Bridges" (1995) that weren't successful. They happened not to be cop shows, which may have been one reason they didn't succeed. If the public doesn't accept you in a role, the show won't make it.

As much as I wanted Vice to continue on another season or two, I knew there was no way that was gonna happen because by season five the show had changed so much from the way it was in the first two seasons. IMHO, seasons one & two were by far the best of the series. Seasons three was also very good but even by that point you could see various changes had occured. By season four & five it was a different show altogether and we got episodes like "Missing Hours" and "Miracle Man". These were episodes they would have never considered to air much-less even make the first couple years. It was clear (to me) by season four the writing had changed, and although there were some good episodes still to come, there was also some filler in there, too. Sad as it was to the true fans of the show, it was definitely time for it to come to a close because the writing had obviously waned and it was just time for it to end.

Miami Vice wasn't the same at season 4 & 5, Don says the show never reached its full potential and i think the reason for that was because Michael Mann left to do more Movies, fair play to Dick Wolf he did a great job with season 3 but messed it all up in 4.

It's sad that Miami Vice ended so soon. Five seasons just seemed like they cut it short. You have shows now that aren't half as good and still going after 10+ seasons. I really wish there had been at least another three seasons of Miami Vice, and it really should have had a total of nine or ten seasons. It's really a shame that such a great series ended way too soon.

HAD IT PROGRESSED, IT WOULD HAVE EASILY JUMPED THE SHARK BY 1991 LIKE 21 JUMP ST DID. Remember Johnny D. being replaced after he left? Same thing would've happened...either PMT or DJ most likely would have bigger aspirations (though, what is bigger than MV anyway? aside from new jack swing, of course) and LEFT...leaving the viewers derailed and the producers with a knife to their throat. So, all you ASSES are not Hollywood gods, thus you do not know when it is best to cut a series short. And in this case, the executives did a great damn job at 'thinking twice and cutting once'

Not really. The show went off the rails after Michael Mann left, and pretty soon the show’s direction changed and other staples of the show (Jan Hammer, John Diehl, etc.) dropped off too. Seasons 4 and 5 were total shells of what the show once was. The show should have ended even sooner (after season 2 or 3) if it wanted to stay a totally and consistently good show. Instead, a revolving door of executive producers and showrunners created it into an aimless mishmash parody of what it originally was. Aliens, Crockett in jeans, and an a-cappella jazz score? Come on.

Hard to believe the ultra cool MV show was 40 years ago. The same time span between when MV started and D-day WW2.
Let that sink in a moment..
Even in the 80s the WW2 era seemed like an incredibly grey ancient time, long gone from memory. Incomparable to the cool 1980s when technology, lifestyle and cultural norms was light years ahead of the 1940s. To me the 1980s still seem so fresh, modern and vibrant like I could step back in to that time and barely anyone would notice I’m from 40 years into the future.

Television sucks anymore. And it has for the past 20 years. Today's TV is made up of,
    Talk shows
    Reality TV shows
News. Hollywood has become so damn fake. Everything is CGI. And no matter how old you were, no matter where you are, and no matter what was going in the world, you made sure you were home on a Friday night to watch Miami Vice. To think, 1 show produced
    1) numerous clothing lines
    2) revitalized Miami
    3) an influx of police cadets
    4) start of numerous celebs career
    5) tourism increased by millions
6)more musician cameos than an other show
    7)huge sales jump for Ferraris
    8) Ray Bans became a household name.
And that's just to name a few this show, along with C.H.I.P.S tv show, inspired me to become a cop. Miami Vice is the best television show ever made!

We are sorry we have had a technical desaster with uploading. YES ! The video is shown for two times with the SAME scenes - the second half (the double one) without any sound. Please, no worries, ultimately you are missing nothing. The original interview takes only 4:55 min.
We are really sorry about this situation... :-(
    Thanks for understanding.

Miami Vice ended because the 80s ended, the period from 1984-1989 was perfect for Miami Vice, it just wouldn't have worked for the show to drag on another season or two.

I think Don Johnson made it plain in this interview that he was done with the show. I'm sure that contributed towards its demise. He thought he'd go on to be a big movie star so MV was thrown under the bus. It had served its purpose as far as he was concerned.

It's changed A LOT over the years. The skyline has changed the most. Many of the older buildings have been razed to make way for the new. The streets are pretty much the same and South Beach is still a gathering place for people but the demographic has changed from mostly older people to younger. The pastels have remained though :)
Miami Vice was the single best show that ever came to Miami. Although Vice somewhat exaggerated the reality of the drug trade, it reflected the general issue of it.

Wooooooow, that was AWKWARD! Firstly, coming on Today to (kind of) plug a cancelled show that had jumped MANY sharks by final season 5 is bad enough! But then, between Philip Michael not quite understanding the question of critical response and clumsily spinning it off into a remark about tourism(!), and then Don at the end, having an ego-slip with "and that's a testament to the fine talent I've HAD to...(um, I mean)...that I've enjoyed working with...". It's kind of like Sting: super-desperate to leave The Police by their last record! Add to this; Bryant "Asshole" Gumble, at the height of his warrantless, self-entitled, reign on NBC!
Personally, at the time, I had dropped "Vice" in favor of Mann's awesome "Crime Story", but even THAT show had been cancelled by this interview. I truly loved "Miami Vice" but I wish someone serious had taken control of it; yanked Don Johnson's silly pop star leash, and re-envisioned the enormous potential that was still there in the characters and material. Happily, in the mean time, I think Don's become a much more humble and interesting actor. And no one's even heard of Bryant Gumble since. Good things still happen!
As for the still-born "Miami Vice" movie...it was pure Michael Mann: all cinematography and procedural rigor, completely devoid of charm. He's like the George Lucas of police shows. He gave birth to great things but totally forgot that it was the actor's chemistry that made it personal and special.

I agree, it was a damn shame that a show that started out so great just became a jumbled incoherent mess by the end of it's run. It's sadly fitting that this interview heralded the coming end to a series that lost it's way as well as being at the bookend of a great decade. Thankfully NYPD blue would come along a few years later and give the police drama genre a much needed shot in the arm, ironically by being the opposite of Miami Vice, gritty and harsh instead of glitzy.

AirwolfArchive season 4. The overly serious s3 hurt the following. Dropping from top10 to top30! They could have salvaged things in season4 but it was a disaster; lunatic episodes of UFOs, bull semen, crook councils, amnesia and Sheena Easton.
Season5 was a step up but the damage had already been done.

Miami Vice Seasons 1 and 2 are bonafide classics.
Season 3 was also excellent and beefed up the intensity, the turquoise color clothing switch was jarring at first but it grew on me.
Season 4 was absoloutley awful, maybe only had 2 or 3 good episodes but it was directionless by that point.
Season 5 I think was criminally underrated, the tone got darker but it made sense to me that the show would go down that path. Miami Vice had the best closure to any show period.

I think I stopped watching around the time I finished college in 1988. I moved on with my life by then. Although I would love to see the show in reruns now. Although it seems the tape used to shoot video 80s didn't hold up and is really hard to watch now. Shows from the sixties actually look better.

Philip should have gotten more high profile roles. I’ve always wondered why he dabbled in so many things and didn’t get a good shot at Hollywood like Don Johnson did. It seems almost like he was satisfied that he ‘made it’ and that 5 year run of MV was enough for him. He achieved his life goal of making a name for himself in a TV show and he just enjoyed the riches and dabbled in all sorts of things doing whatever weird interesting came to mind but making some business out of it to make enough for his large family to live comfortably.

You are right the writers for season 4 for were so lazy and there was no real effort, they were either rehashing episodes from seasons 1-3 or writing goofy alien episodes, my biggest criticism was the look and style of the show in season 4&5 all of that denim and silly hairstyles, look at Rico's clothes and hairstyle in this video compared to season 1-3.
Seriously it couldn't of been that hard for the production team to copy the clothes and hairstyles from 1 & 2 could it?

At least at that time the FRIENDship which has powered the series MV at the beginning was gone. I simply think if you are together most of all hours a day - doing always the same thing... it is hard to keep a friendship in a valence like a the beginning. Maybe even that a big part which has taken MV the magic which has built the hype with Season 1 and top of all season 2. Just my two cents.

You know, a few years back I read an article about network & a producer looking into possibly bringing back Vice. In fact it was around the time CSI Miami was starting the 2nd season when i read the article. Anyway, from what i read Vice would have had major facelifts, one was Crockett being now as Castillo position. Can't remember the rest, it was years back. Not that long after 9/11
When did CSI Miami start? 01 or 02? But of course CSI Miami won. Not sure how good the new vice would have been.. Right? Or Horatio from CSI could have been Sonny.. LoL! Wow just thinking of that was terrible..
