Does Declutter means throw it in the garbage?

    • @susanjohn6506

CnF C.W P preferably it means repurpose, give to a friend, donate, recycle.

I would like to share a clothing declutter suggestion. When you put it on, beyond the obvious fit, comfort and wear, if you don't feel 100% you and beautiful, don't keep it. Makes things simple and less likely to hang on to it.

I like to make a list of uses. Then I decide how often those scenarios actually occur. If it's rare, I give the item away and borrow when I need it. I also believe in making repairs to broken items and clothing. Broken mug? Kintsugi. Holes in my favorite shirt? Sew it up. Obviously there are limits to this and you have to set a timeline (or it never gets done) but it feels better than throwing out pretty good items.

My eye doctor collects old glasses to send to kids in developing countries so it’s great to donate them! But make sure you keep your second latest prescription that you don’t wear any more so if your glasses break you will be able to see pretty good until you can get new ones!

People always say to declutter extra buttons but I always keep mine. I even cut buttons off anything that has to be thrown away instead of donated. I like sewing though and I have replaced missing buttons or used them in other sewing projects. Buttons are honestly expensive. So if you really will use them, it's better to keep them than to buy them at a craft store.

    • @zeezee1851
      @zeezee1851 5 лет назад +2

I keep buttns too. I sew, so these are in a drawer of the sewing machine table.
It matters not that I no longer have the original because when I am replacing a bottom button on a blouse or coat, close is a good enough match for all practical purposes. A 5/8-inch brass button that has a similar sheen will do just fine if that's what the coat has, regardless of the design on the button. Anyone who is looking that closely at the hemline of my coat needs to get another hobby.
I also have a small collection of embroidery floss in a rainbow of colors because I can match any hem or button or seam and make a manual repair quickly. Double or triple embroidery floss is strong enough for those jobs.
But then, I'm of an older generation and I do a lot of the things Ashlynne assumes we don't do such as knit, crochet, sew, embroider, paint my own house interiors, and cook for large parties.. And I've cleared a lot of the rubble of life these videos say to get real about. It really does just depend on your habits.

I noticed in your videos you use the phrase declutter, instead of throw away or get rid of. I like that, because it sounds a lot nicer, and allows for the possibility of reuse. What I struggle with is how can the things I declutter still be useful. Not everything can be donated, and many other organizations take very specific things. If you are looking for video ideas, compiling a list of places that all the decluttered items on this list can go to to maximize the benefit it can still have to the world.

Old clothing can be chopped up to make cleaning rags. Socks are great for dusting and if you have a bike, cleaning the frame and chain. I keep a sock with my bike so if/when the chain falls off, I can put it back on using the sock as a mitt. All hail socks!!!! I also hoard old toothbrushes for cleaning said bike chain.
I live in a very small apartment, my main living space is 189 square feet so I don't have room for anything extra. Every time I read a book, I write a little review in a dollar store notebook (when I started this project 12 years ago I wasn't always by a computer) so I don't clutter up my space with books but still have a record of the book (albeit, I am not into my 14th notebook) but I have a place for them.

I am 100% guilty of keeping old boxes, but it's for a good reason I promise! I keep the boxes for my gaming consoles, kitchen appliances, fish tank, etc. because I'm in college and i move on and off campus at least 1-2 times a year and moving always sucks, so when I can pack my appliances into their original boxes it helps me keep track of what is what and it makes moving easier. It's way easier to pack my xbox, games, controllers and cables into it's original box instead of shoving all of those individual items into different bags.

Thank you for your suggestions. I would suggest keeping at least one extra phone. Even if it doesn't work perfectly it is a real pain to lose a phone or drop one in the toilet. Then you have a buffer before buying a new phone and won't be forced to. This way you can wait for a sale or you may not even be able to get to the store to buy one. I just think it's a safe thing to do.

Ashlynne: Thanks for your videos. I find them reasonable and your presentation is very engaging. This mini-series was very helpful.
The theme for me in decluttering my house and taking stock of what I've got physically, is that it helps me do the same emotionally and mentally. Also, it truly is a gift to be able to give. When I give things away, people are always grateful. I always, always, always get more than I give. I get a clearer feeling in my home, I get the warm gratitude of the people I'm giving things too. It's the best two-fer going. Here are some of the ready-made donation markets for items you covered.
Cloth things decluttered like towels, tattered clothing or blankets, and sheets/pillows; your vet, ASPCA, or the humane society. Vets treat quite a few strays pro bono. Thank them this way.
Arts and craft supplies whether aspirational or remainders: schools always need them.
Prescription glasses: check with the optometrist. There are charities that match people who can't afford glasses to the prescriptions donated.
Books and magazines: Volunteer literacy program (correctional facilities often have them) or hospitals, nursing homes.
Pet toys, treats, food, gear: I give them to the various rescue groups. They can use almost everything you have, including the cans or partial bags of food you had when your pet departed this realm.

Hi Ashlynne! I want to thank you for inspiring me to do a massive declutter these past two days. I played your videos in the background as I went through my space and got rid of a trash bag full of papers and things and filled up another trash bag with clothes to donate. This is on top of regular clothing declutters that I now realize were not strict enough. As you listed out categories of things to get rid of, I literally got up and got rid of those things. Every drawer I have is organized and I found some super useful things along the way! I can't wait to learn for myself the benefits of minimalism as I buy less and want less.

No... Don't get rid of old prescription glasses. I keep the last one, with the new one, just so that I have a backup when something goes wrong, which has happened. I would rather wear my old glasses that might not be the right prescription anymore, than not seeing anything while being out and about. Matter of safety: always keep reserve glasses if you wear prescription glasses, especially if you can't function in traffic without them. Just...not all of your old ones... Just one will do. Now back to the video. Love it

Also, I do keep single socks. Only because all my socks are the same. If another sock from another pair gets ripped, I still have a full pair, only losing two socks instead of four. Most economical amd better for the environment, than throwing away those single socks. #singlesocklifematters

Keeping old clothes and sheets might be usefull actually. I didn't know it back then, but 2-3 years ago I started sawing and making stitch works and old clothes are what I use for the backgrounds all the time. Now that I am making a backpack I am so glad I had in hand big pieces of old clothes and I didn't have to buy anything new. My mother has used old fabrics as well for cleaning purposes.

on old stockings...if you gave den you can use that to tie the plants to their stakes. this allows some stretch so it won't cut into the plant. my grandparents did this. you can also out a bar of soap in the foot part cut it semi close and tie it closed. this can be a soap holder thing.

I found a second use for stockings with runs!
You can cut the stocking up and tie them off to make little pouches. You can fill these pouches with oatmeal/a little oil and add it to the bath. The oatmeal soothes dry patches!

Gonna disagree a little bit about the shoes, especially since you were showcasing some Birkenstocks, there. Many shoes are very repairable (*ESPECIALLY BIRKENSTOCKS*). Get your high-quality favorite shoes resoled, re-heeled, re-corked, repaired, polished and loved up. Also, don't buy shoes that can't be repaired, resoled, polished, etc.

Prom dresses don't have to be a loss. Back in high school I bought (or more accurately I chose and mum bought) a beautiful black velvet dress with long sleeves. I think I wore it twice. Fast forward almost 20 years and I realise I need a Little Black Dress. Give mum a ring and ask if she still has it. Turns out she does, it still fits, and it looks fabulous - 16 year old me had fantastic, if sophisticated, taste. Had it professionally altered to mid-calf length and it's my go-to for fancy events.
Obviously not every dress will be a suitable candidate for alteration, but before you dump yours run your eye over them and see if any of them have potential.

When decluttering clothes that are seasonally inappropriate for where you live, consider if you have friends or family who still live where those clothes would be seasonally appropriate especially if you are likely to visit them during that season. You might want to keep a few extra things for trips. I moved to Florida a few years ago and joyfully decluttered much of my winter gear but I still have a lot of family up north. Last year, I went to Maine for Thanksgiving and realized that I didn't have any winter appropriate pjs anymore! Now I keep a small stash of winter gear for visiting family at the holidays, mostly things I can layer with my normal wardrobe.

First, great video again. Thank you. I never realized how many towels and bedding sets I had until I had my neighbor over to show her my declutter success so far a couple weeks ago. She commented on them. I asked her how many she has. She only had one towel per person and top bunk in daughters room no sheets. So I gathered up some to hand to her. Both winners. VHS everything went in the spring. I have an old 8mm video recorder I want to digitize my tapes and declutter the recorder. So much more to declutter. One box at a time. I now do the "One in - One out" method. Also go grocery shopping more often I find less food waste so actually pays for gas to go shopping many times over. "Decluttering" all of my craft stuff except painting.

If a dress comes with an extra button, I typically sew it onto the tag that comes on it! You know which one it comes from and you don’t have a large button jar (though a lot of clothes I find come with the button on the tag in the first place)

Tip for extra buttons for tops or pants: It takes just a few minutes to take that extra button that came with your new purchase and just sew it into the seam or back of the washing instructions tag. Should you lose a button just retrieve the one you’ve sewn inside the garment. Presto!...at your fingertips.😉

One thing I'm not keen on in this list is decluttering your children's books and toys. I don't think you should declutter someone elses belongings, even your child. If my foster parents had gotten rid of my books that I had read already I would have never forgiven them, I still own books I've had since I was a child that have importance to me that other people wouldn't see, so if they were taken away from me growing up I would have lost my love of reading. Also would have lost my first editions of Harry Potter. And if my carers had thrown away my cuddly toys I would also never have forgiven them, I'm about to turn 26 and still have a stuffed rabbit that they got me when I was 3 when I first went into foster care, it was my first real christmas and any time I've thought I'd lost her I would have a complete melt down because this rabbit, that to other people would be seen as an old toy that isn't played with, is incredibly important to me.
Encouraging your child to part with toys they no longer play with, books they don't want ect is a good thing to do, but it should be them parting with it, you might end up getting rid of something that you don't think has any importance or that they don't use but they actually use that thing when you're not around and then they find you've taken it, that break of trust would hurt badly.

    • @Phyreflyte
      @Phyreflyte 5 лет назад

Self Made Geek There’s a difference between a parent getting rid of a toy or item that a child has clearly outgrown or doesn’t touch anymore or a book that is completely trashed and a foster parent getting rid of valued items. I think common sense plays a role and parents have every right to get rid of broken, nasty, outgrown toys that their child NEVER uses anymore. If parents didn’t declutter their children’s toys but waited until the child was old enough to make that choice, the playroom would overflow into the rest of the house. Children receive so many gifts throughout a year for a parent to keep them all, and small children (toddlers and babies) don’t have enough reasoning or maturity to decide what to keep or not.

VHS tapes degrade every time they're played. Since you're watching them once a month, that's probably going to be a problem in time. If the tapes contain anything personal, I suggest getting them converted to a more durable / reliable long-term storage solution. If they're just regular movies, see if you can purchase them digitally or even on something like Blu-Ray. The quality will be much better anyways.
