3 weeks of watching your videos has changed everything about how I think of guitar. I went from having half a dozen cowboy songs in my back pocket to playing improv lead over comfortably numb in no time flat.
This is probably the best RUclips guitar lesson I’ve ever seen. Thank you for not only the lightbulb moment but also the applicable practice routine to cement this.
One thing I find helpful to remember is that the location of root notes go with the chord you are playing. A shape root note is A string. G Shape root note is on the G string, E shape the root is on the E strings, and D shape the root is on the D string
Been playing for awhile, and finally getting solid on the Caged system and realizing that I've been using concepts of it the whole time without realizing it. This video helped in how to get away from thinking about scales and finding locations on the fretboard. Another huge finding that helped me understand this video is how the shapes outline the pentatonic positions. 5 shapes...5 pentatonic positions.
I've been using the "root note sequence" for years, and have never seen anybody else describe this tool to date, except you, today. This is the key to everything that matters on guitar. The "C" shape root notes should also be the NorthStar to the "c" shape pentatonic, and the "c" shape major scale, all right under that particular "c" shape root shape. At 17:40 you say you get that information "from finding your G major chord. I find it by finding any "G" note at all, and recognizing what "G" shape root shape comes before and after. From thier the chord, the Pentatonic and the Major all all under your fingers.
2:13 "The biggest miss is that the CAGED system is a complete shape, and most people only think of the puzzle PIECES instead of the whole PICTURE". DUDE THANK YOU. Subbed.
If you're a lead guitar player, this video is gold! Stitch mentioned a few videos that will also tie this practice idea to scales. I believe if you do the work he suggests in this video many will improve their ability to navigate the fretboard. BUT... if you want to take your guitar playing to the next level and play rhythm, the next practice idea would be for each shape of the CAGED chord system play all seven of the chords in the key with as little fretting hand movement as possible for each CAGED chord grip. If you've never tried that, practice the E and D shape first. Those 2 shapes will give you the most mileage IMHO.
@@rabbit0877ry playing the modified d as a triad on strings 2 3 and 4. Much easier to play . Also if you barre with your index it blocks out the scale
@@KevinschartIt's easier, useful to practice caged while being able to hear it but if you going to use this shape as a chord you should keep in mind that it's basically a power chord
Stich, you are the guy! I have not seen anyone explaining the guitar with as much passion as you are. Thank you! You have elevated my dream of becoming a better player.
Ian, I wanted to thank you for this video. When you said "If you can do this already then just move on", I almost moved on. But then I thought to myself can I do it with zero hesitation can I do it as good as he can. I've been practicing it for 5 days now and I'm shoring up holes. Today I felt comfortable moving on to practicing it with a 1 4 and a 1 5. Man it's good to move back to fundamentals sometimes!
Also that cheat D shape is awesome. Never used it and I usually just skip over the D shape, But I love it now! And this week I find myself in the D shape pentatonic more as a result.
Just wana say iv been looking all over youtube to purchase a masterclass on unlocking the fret board. None of them have resonated with me. But this i can understand. I can see the beginning of having a deeper understanding of the fret board from two of your videos. I really hope that your classes mixed with dedication will make this all come together for me.
Hey man, no need to purchases a masterclass. Just start with my caged primer playlist and watch it till the end. It will completely change your fretboard knowledge. I promise
I've been studying cage now for the last month, I on a guitar program part of my lesson path is Cage it's that horrible medcine you didn't want to take but you know you need it, what I need to work on is remembering the Chord shapes the appregios , once I get this nailed down I feel it will open the door for me, I feel Cage is a crucial part of my guitar development, thanks Ian for this lesson it has really helped, down the road with things get a better with the bank account I will definetly come back to your Patron group, I rather purchase a year membership, one day I love to meet you and just shake your hand to say thank you for all the great lessons over the years,
I always love going back to your Cage videos Ian once you start to understand these are shapes and where your root note is the lightbulbs will start flashing as I travel down in my guitar journey I realize how important cage and fun I might add, oh I do have the cage playbook incredible resource to have as a guitar student
I feel like this is the lesson that I have craved for literally 30 years. I never got past the puzzle pieces with some janky sounding connections, and I'd lose sight of the root notes the further I veered from my starting position so it just sounded more noodley and lame. Thanks! I'm so psyched to train with this approach.
This lesson has been monumental for me so far. I've been playing for little over 3 years now, and started to take lead guitar lessons. That along with this video has helped me emensely!
I've watched every caged video out there and can't grasp the concept to save my life. I was stuck in form 1 Am pentatonic as the only lead in my brain for 40 years until I found Neverlost and it all fell in place. (thanks Stich) I've been looking for that same type of ah ha moment to unlock CAGED. So far to no avail.
Yep. This is exactly what I've been working on. I'm still trying to get faster at fretboard note identification and tie that into everything you talk about here. Good stuff Stich. Glad you're back and healthy.
needed to know what people were talking about when they said caged system? kind of like octave dispersion thank you! I have been a student my whole life and when my students asked me about the system I told them "it was when you imprisoned yourself LOL! now I know

Ian happy new year to you too! Your Masterclass has done wonders for me in terms of improv. Can’t wait to see where we go this year, but stop burning your fingers. You don’t need to do this to take a few days off. We’ll wait for you. Be safe!

Mucho props for this. I have tried to learn where all the notes are on the guitar, and it is just boring, and my brain says NO! This connects the dots in a way that is both musical while learning and not so boring and my brain says, this is interesting.
I know this to a decent degree already (thanks to watching your past videos) but I’m not as smooth as you. This is still a great refresher and reminder to keep practicing! Thanks Ian :)
Thanks for all the Guitar knowledge your share with the world Stich! It was great to meet you and get a lesson at the Nothland fest this summer! Best to you & yours, Al !
