I'm a self-taught guitarist. (Mel Bay and Guitar magazine). After 25 years of playing, I still had questions. I got stuck on a solo. Had no idea what to do. It felt like I was out of ideas. Then I found Mr. Stitch.
I applied one of his lessons, (singing your solo). And it changed the way I was approaching the song. And, it worked.
    Thanks.

I’m a singer/songwriter/frontman who started in open tuning. Have wrote some great rock n roll tunes on there. Even some ballads. Have relied on other people for gigs & recording the music because I’ve always wanted to stay in “my lane”. Around December last year I fell in love with the Dead. Jerry Garcia, his playing, it’s changed my life. Was jamming with my friend and did a pretty decent solo on his standard tuning. Didn’t really know what I was doing but I’ve always had an ear I trusted & believed in. He amped me up & since then I’ve been encouraged to learn this instrument, truly. I’ve seen many teachers on RUclips. IAN, YOU ARE SPECIAL BROTHER. In these months, I’ve soaked up this knowledge of your holy grail. I’m so proud of myself and of the journey this has been & will continue to be. Currently I’m visiting Minneapolis, going to Paisley Park tomorrow. 2 weeks ago I performed with Richie Cannata at the oldest rock n roll club in NYC(my hometown born & raised there).
I HAVEN’T EVEN WATCHED THE VIDEO YET LMAO I just wanted to say thank you. Cheers to you. Cheers to your family. Glad you’re posting. And may you continue to light the way for others brother. Peace ♊️🌒🥃

It will take longer to learn to shred but the finished product will be well worth it. This is a great lesson.

So as I started watching this, I was thinking this wasn't going to be useful because it was kind of simple. Then I sat down with some tracks and it was really helpful. THEN I started connecting this concept to triads i have been working on the D, G, and B strings and it really clicked. It's not always just the concept alone, but when things start to relate to one another, that is a real breakthrough for me!

Nice to see this explained so well. I know this method works because this is how I've been soloing for years. It works. If for whatever reason I lose where the chord is, I just go directly to the pentatonic scale until I get my bearings and then head back to the chord shape. To practice this, play a recording of a song that you know the chords of and follow it with your own solo.

@@trevortully7179 It sure is. Another thing that screwed me up and still does, is the high and low strings. I cant get it out of my head that the "high" e string is the top E string, and the "low" e string is the bottom one. I know, its weird, but to me the high one is on top, and the low one is on the bottom.
My friend taught himself to play guitar holding it upside down. He said it made more sense to him to have the thinnest strings the farthest from his reach, than the thicker ones. So when he reaches, he doesnt have to press as hard. Pretty warped, but he was a gifted singer and songwriter so I guess if it works, it works.

@abraxas511 with the guitar in your lap, hold it up in front of your face and flip it so the fretboard is facing towards you. That's how you gotta picture the fretboard. The low E is on the bottom. I also think about it like the low string is the bottom string. Of course it's the opposite of your right hand picking motion where down is actually towards the floor.

    • @skylee5029

@@trevortully7179nah. Musicians need to stop referring to their higher frequency strings as the bottom. Those are higher notes and therefore your higher, upper, or top strings. Your lower frequency strings are your lower or bottom strings. Up and Down needs to always be referred to in terms of frequency for the musician.

This is great. I'm the kind of person who likes to learn by "Why?" and "When". Merely telling me "Just because" (genuinely said to me about math) or "You can bend and use vibrato" (most videos) isn’t enough. When do you bend? Which notes? Which are best with vibrato? By putting in this video "Don’t bend these notes, only the ones around" is a massive help to me. Some people will read this and go "Duh. I've been playing drums for 2 weeks and even I know that about guitar" (genuine reply sent to me once) but that isn't how my brain works. Maybe I'm on a spectrum. I don’t know. This helped me, so thank you🙂

Interesting lesson. Focusing on the chord tones instead of getting fancy bending strings all through the solo is a revelation. When I bend strings around a chord scale, I'm pretty darn sure I lose track of where I am going forward until the next chord change. It might sound great when you're doing it but experience has taught me time after time that it's a fishing expedition to get your bearings back into a familiar scale once a chord change happens. I never knew why until this.

I looooooooove this!! So simple. I love how you don't try so hard to act like you know more than everyone like some other youtubers. I'm just lost when I watch those videos but this makes great sense to me. Thanks man.

I'm just starting back up after years this is the best start in explanation and exercise I've come across. So sensible 😊

Beautifully explained. I've been playing for over 20 years and I'm trying to teach my son, which I struggle with. This is amazing. We're going to review this together. It's right where he's at. Thank you 🙏🏼

HI Ian , nice to see you back. Its funny how we all seem to know more than we think but struggle to use it. When you point out this simple idea its like a light bulb goes on and we think why did I know put that together in my mind!! Thanks Ian well done and enjoy your vacation. Ian
