I’ve been a player most of my life. Watched a bunch of instructors on you tube but I have never ever come across someone who could get me inside my head so fast. It’s unbelievable, stitch is a bloody genius. I’m 75 and I am a stitch fan and follower for the remainder, which I hope is a long time! God bless you man!

The helicopter was searching for the best guitar teacher on youtube. Pilot is probably blind. We already found the dude 😊. Thank you for teaching us so much. Gtrz Fab.
Thank you. I'm a self-taught guitarist. (Mel Bay and Guitar magazine). After 25 years of playing, I still had questions. I got stuck on a solo. Had no idea what to do. It felt like I was out of ideas. Then I found Mr. Stitch. I applied one of his lessons, (singing your solo). And it changed the way I was approaching the song. And, it worked. Thanks.
I’m a singer/songwriter/frontman who started in open tuning. Have wrote some great rock n roll tunes on there. Even some ballads. Have relied on other people for gigs & recording the music because I’ve always wanted to stay in “my lane”. Around December last year I fell in love with the Dead. Jerry Garcia, his playing, it’s changed my life. Was jamming with my friend and did a pretty decent solo on his standard tuning. Didn’t really know what I was doing but I’ve always had an ear I trusted & believed in. He amped me up & since then I’ve been encouraged to learn this instrument, truly. I’ve seen many teachers on RUclips. IAN, YOU ARE SPECIAL BROTHER. In these months, I’ve soaked up this knowledge of your holy grail. I’m so proud of myself and of the journey this has been & will continue to be. Currently I’m visiting Minneapolis, going to Paisley Park tomorrow. 2 weeks ago I performed with Richie Cannata at the oldest rock n roll club in NYC(my hometown born & raised there). I HAVEN’T EVEN WATCHED THE VIDEO YET LMAO I just wanted to say thank you. Cheers to you. Cheers to your family. Glad you’re posting. And may you continue to light the way for others brother. Peace ♊️🌒🥃
I’ve been playing for 45 years I would strongly encourage any beginner level guitar players, and combined this lesson with the caged System (they’re pretty much the same thing) It will take longer to learn to shred but the finished product will be well worth it. This is a great lesson.
I remembered reading an article where Jerry Garcia said you will never become a master guitar player unless you follow the chord progressions. This is proof of that, great lesson thank you!
HOLY CHORD TONES STITCH MAN! I've just worn my fingers to the point of bleeding. Two years of learning and recently consumed by 'triads'... this lesson was pitch perfect and on point! I'm back to being amazed at the fact that I can actually play some notes that 'fit' the rhythm. Yeah... I'm another 66 year old but I'm really just 12! Jam on!
THIS. This is the key I’ve been missing. I’ve been playing for probably 20 years. I can memorize songs no problem but I always struggled with soloing and improvising. This helps!
I took advanced guitar while at "prestigious" Belmont University and knew all the scales but couldn't intuitively solo - and you just unlocked it after listening and playing along to this about 10 times - can't thank you enough! Excited to see what else you got going! THANK YOU!
So as I started watching this, I was thinking this wasn't going to be useful because it was kind of simple. Then I sat down with some tracks and it was really helpful. THEN I started connecting this concept to triads i have been working on the D, G, and B strings and it really clicked. It's not always just the concept alone, but when things start to relate to one another, that is a real breakthrough for me!
You are an incredible teacher, Ian. I feel like I’m gaining insight by leaps and bounds. I’ve watched several of your videos in the past but hadn’t checked out your Patreon until just this week. I am soooo glad I did. There are multiple online and in-person instructors I’ve been learning from the last 5 years and I do learn from them all but you, by far, are the best at breaking things down and getting concepts across. And your passion for guitar and being creative is contagious and inspiring. Plus somehow you make it feel like we are truly in a “room” working together. I didn’t think I could become any more obsessed with my guitar journey than I already am but my excitement just skyrocketed. Thank you for all you do!
STICH you dont even know man. you taught me more about improv more than any teacher out there! all you past grateful dead videos have made me 100x better of a player! plus with 2 dollar pdfs u cant beat that! thank you !
I wonder if this gentleman knows how many people he has just helped, finally someone who can make guitar soloing look manageable, thank you very much, I think I will pick up my guitar and try again.
Wow, what a fun and easy to follow lesson. Within minutes I've been playing to backing tracks in a different, and maybe more musical, way. Keep up the great work!
Great video as usual. Thank you. Your wife hit it right on the head. So many of Jerry's leads have that "joyous" sound to them. I think that is what made his playing so special. His leads conveyed a feeling more thank just a sound...
Home Run....Now This simple method is right up my alley...I seem to have a retention issue. I can play this without notebooks or tabs ...just playing freely is an amazing feeling.Thanks.
Simple, effective and eye-opening. Watched this one the other day, loaded the chords in my (new!) looper, and the lights went on in my head. Thanks! You’re one of my favorite YT guitar teachers. 👍
Thanks for breaking that down. I've heard people refer to just playing the "box" and didn't realize it's essentially the lower portion of the pentatonic "E" shape.
You're a really righteous human. I appreciate your channel and how much you're sharing the gift of music so that others can participate. Good on ya, man!
You hit the nail on the head. Your analytics tied it all together in one lesson. So much partial information out there, all great pieces.....but this "Ties Together" the pieces of the puzzle. Thanks a Million from someone trying hard to understand.
Nice to see this explained so well. I know this method works because this is how I've been soloing for years. It works. If for whatever reason I lose where the chord is, I just go directly to the pentatonic scale until I get my bearings and then head back to the chord shape. To practice this, play a recording of a song that you know the chords of and follow it with your own solo.
Thanks! Your video lessons help demystify music theory for me. Thanks for the hope that I may someday be able solo and understand why it sounds right or wrong.
Thanks a million. Finally I get it :) It's all come together now. What a relief! Since watching your video I can now play along and improvise beautifully to ALL those old songs I just gave up on in the past. This tutorial is heaven sent. Thank you so very much.
No doubt the best at helping many people ( me included) to understand all the aspects of guitar. I was overwhelmed with where to start, what to start, what mode, scales , caged,Theory, etc, He doesn’t require you to know any of that to start having fun while connecting the dots making me way more hopeful that I will one day soon will get where I want with it. The Best
This is really good! I learned a ton from your video. So many teachers say to use certain scales, modes, etc, but rarely say WHEN to use them. ‘Play the changes!’ And now i have some tools to do it. Thank you!!
Your an hour away from where I live in Alfred ,Ontario. Welcome and nice to see you making videos again! You have gotten really great as a guitar instructor and as a nice human being! Thanks for what you do!
Love stitch method. I don’t often comment, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the friendly, easy going, way in which you explain these tips and lessons. Thanks a bunch. Too often is the case that many youtubers come off a little arrogant. That’s no way to sell their product. And definitely no way to teach.
This was the most helpful lesson on introductory soloing that I've ever seen/heard. I've been playing for about ten years on & off, and always struggled when it came to any premise of soloing. It was pretty much limited to randomly dancing through scale patterns. This is a great start and can't wait to start experimenting with it. Thank you!
Thanks, Ian. It's always a welcome sight to see one of your videos pop up in my feed. Great lesson. Looking forward to seeing more new videos. Keep them coming, please.
Thank you, this is the video I was looking for. I'm glad you mentioned emphasizing certain notes/not messing with/ending on notes in the scale. I was definitely confused about that!
Click. 💡 Ive essentially been brand new to playing guitar for like a decade... Thanks for this video for some reason this really just made sense to me and i feel like i finally have something to work towards and practice other than playing the same single thing ive known how to play forever.
I've been struggling so much with this concept and you presented it so simply that it just makes sense. So excited to work on this over the next couple weeks and use the same method for other triad shapes. Thanks so much!

@abraxas511 with the guitar in your lap, hold it up in front of your face and flip it so the fretboard is facing towards you. That's how you gotta picture the fretboard. The low E is on the bottom. I also think about it like the low string is the bottom string. Of course it's the opposite of your right hand picking motion where down is actually towards the floor.

This is great. I'm the kind of person who likes to learn by "Why?" and "When". Merely telling me "Just because" (genuinely said to me about math) or "You can bend and use vibrato" (most videos) isn’t enough. When do you bend? Which notes? Which are best with vibrato? By putting in this video "Don’t bend these notes, only the ones around" is a massive help to me. Some people will read this and go "Duh. I've been playing drums for 2 weeks and even I know that about guitar" (genuine reply sent to me once) but that isn't how my brain works. Maybe I'm on a spectrum. I don’t know. Well that was a really useful lesson and a great start to the day. Taking it a little further, I discovered I can do the same thing on the B string. Differernt pattens but same principle. Huge step forward, thanks very much.
Interesting lesson. Focusing on the chord tones instead of getting fancy bending strings all through the solo is a revelation. When I bend strings around a chord scale, I'm pretty darn sure I lose track of where I am going forward until the next chord change. It might sound great when you're doing it but experience has taught me time after time that it's a fishing expedition to get your bearings back into a familiar scale once a chord change happens. I never knew why until this.
Great lesson! This got me unstuck from exactly the problem you described. After this, i feel more confident to mix in scales which don't necessarily have the root of the chord on the first string, but we'll see about that.
A+ I have watched a lot of videos and there is something about your method of teaching or explaining that rings well and is easy to comprehend and understand. Much appreciated.

HI Ian , nice to see you back. Its funny how we all seem to know more than we think but struggle to use it. When you point out this simple idea its like a light bulb goes on and we think why did I know put that together in my mind!! Thanks Ian well done and enjoy your vacation. Ian

I connected with this one dude! Thank you. I've been working learning triads and boom, here it is. Awesome, well done.
I'm just starting back up after years this is the best start in explanation and exercise I've come across. So sensible 😊
Beautifully explained. I've been playing for over 20 years and I'm trying to teach my son, which I struggle with. This is amazing. We're going to review this together. It's right where he's at. Thank you 🙏🏼
Yes, great breakdown of keeping with the chord changes, making it come together of what we learned.
Best lesson!!! Thanks and greetings from Austria 😊
HI Ian , nice to see you back. Its funny how we all seem to know more than we think but struggle to use it. When you point out this simple idea its like a light bulb goes on and we think why did I know put that together in my mind!! Thanks Ian well done and enjoy your vacation. Ian
Good job explaining this stuff -very helpful. Felt surprisingly sympathetic as well. Respect!
