Absolutely, but the problem would be that every time he played a song I'd need to pick up my guitar and work on whatever he was playing. LOLOL He is the BEST at least for what I need to learn.
Agree completely, Chuckle. If an almost-intermediate player can practice their way through this and have these light bulb moments, I can't think of a single other video on RUclips that can get you from this level to the next. I've improved more in a week than I did in the past year. And all the other videos that seemed too advanced are becoming within reach.
I have this personality flaw where whenever I stop getting better I lose my motivation instead of trying harder, and I pretty much quit playing for a few months until my missing playing overwhelms my lethargy brought about by my mediocrity. This video just broke me out of that lethargic state about two weeks into it. Thanks for being awesome as both a guitarist and a teacher.
Sometimes I experience this rare, unique and wonderful phenomenon where I genuinely believe I can see directly into someone's soul. And their soul communicates with mine in such a way that I instantly gain a complete and total understanding for who and what that individual truely is and why they are here. And you sir, are as genuine and wholesome as any that I've encountered. It was an absolute pleasure to cross your path.
Love how he says “this probably doesn’t sound very good”. Sounded great! Exactly what I was looking for. Solos like this are a groove, taking us on a trip. No extra outlandish tricks and excess flair to distract. Just a straight up groove. Love it!
Couldn't agree more! Also there are different types of solo used at different times. What we just saw played by the excellent Mr Stich wouldn't sound so inspiring if used as a solo in a stadium rock gig (All the bells and whistles were missing for that) , but any kind of smaller, more intimate setting live or on a recording it would sound incredible!

I've underestimated the giving nature of people. This is the 1st video I've ever viewed on your channel and I am awestruck by the information you wish to convey through your experiences and mistakes, only people with a humongous heart can convey such information casually. Absolutely in love with it.
Agree with other commenters that this is an excellent way to understand, utilize and practice arpeggi.... I mean chord tones, in a meaningful way. Now to practice the minor chord tones too! Excellent video, thank you Ian!
Light Bulb Moment. Thank you, Ian - your teaching makes a difference! So many videos miss the key practice moment for those of us who aren't quite "there" yet.
Thank you! I’m at the point where I know what I need to do to be a better player and tie it all together but I didn’t know how to get there. Every singe video I watch I connect another dot. Truly appreciate your time and effort.
The beauty of these lessons is that they are timeless and one can revisit them or find them fresh a year later and come away with a huge win on understanding and playing. You NEVER disappoint. Enjoy your summer travel Amazing One.
I just wanna echo all the great comments below. I've been trying to work a way to 'see' the chords for a long time now. Sat down last night and it all fell into place. Genius. Thank you.
I have been trying to learn how to play blues music on my guitar for years. I have been watching you videos for years also. I must say this is the best video you have made yet explaining how to get the 12 bar blues sound. I have been practicing this lesson for days and for the first time in 5 years it finally sounds like I'm playing blues music. Thanks a lot, great lesson. Paul
Dude, I've been struggling for years with this stuff, & you just swoop down & deliver all the goods in such a nutritious & delicious fashion! Thanks a zillion!
The old way of learning Triads is having illustrations of dots on a fretboard- this here is the way to go. Arps just add the rest of the strings. Learning this way is fun and you can instantly apply it in other progressions. Good stuff!
Thank you stich. I've been playing for 40 yrs and never knew the" why, or theory behind what I do " you've made it extremely easy to learn. My hat is off to you...thanks
Great lesson Stitch! I been playing for 35yrs, have a music degree and I love your lessons. Simple ideas, practical in their use, fun to explore, whatever your level of playability! Keep on Rockin' and Stay Groovy man!
I want to give you a kiss like those mafia guys do. One on each cheek. Lol. Dude, you rock! I so need to watch more of your videos, bc you teach like no other!
Yup chord tones are where it's at. I been working on them for a while. I run through all chord tones in first 6 keys in every position, everyday. It has really opened up the neck. 💀⚘⚡♥️⚡⚘💀
I know I watched this a year ago when it was new. I have progressed, thanks in no small part to your tutelage. I am now at a point where I am playing chord tones in my solos. I would encourage your subscribers to rewatch your videos from a couple years ago again I always pickup something that I missed the first time.
Never seen this so well conveyed. Been trying to understand the approach more for a while and haven’t found anything this easily digestible. Thank you.
You’re really amazing. I understand you probably read a lot of comments. But you’re really helping me achieving the next step in my guitar play. Where I’m aiming towards. I understand most of the concepts already, only to hear you explain it extra + showing it makes it great. + you have this amazing chill vibe with you. Loving the content man!
Man your lesson videos have opened up so much for my playing. You are one of the best instructors I have started watching and I will watch four or five different guys explain the same topic just for different points of view. You by far have been the best. Thank you. I wish were a local instructor.
and a year later, when I discover the video, Chuckle McChuckle is STILL right. THANKS Stich - your stuff makes SO much sense - your style of teaching is appreciated.
Love your teaching. Played for years, and I check out online teaching. You explain chordal notes so well, while emphasizing real melodies, and just not running notes as fast as you can. Kudos!
first youtube comment ever but just needed to express how grateful i am for these videos. i've spent years flirting with these concepts and you managed to demystify them in 10 minutes. i've only recently found your channel but have been blown away by your content. thanks so much for all your awesome work!
this lesson helped me so much I didn’t realize that I actually already know a bunch of arpeggios inside of of all the caged chords I just always only play them as chords!!!
First time I've commented on a you tube lesson. Great job man! Please keep putting out the info! It has helped soo much. The way you teach is very relatable
I have learn and improve my solos a lot, following your channel, because I know what I'm doing and why!!!!! They're not random notes, they're Chord Tones !!!
Holy crap you read my mind. I was just composing an email to you about this yesterday. I know there must be a pattern and a way to approach these in a never lost style. You the man Ian!!!!!
Finally a teacher that acknowledges, "If it's too fast, use pause and rewind". An advanced lesson can become a beginner lesson with pause and rewind; it doesn't work the other way around!
Such an incredible important video. After essentially learning the pentatonic scales as shapes alone, I felt ever solo I played sounded the same. I thought I needed to go down the path of modes as a way to make my playing more interesting, but this CAGED approach is helping me be so much more melodic. And the real kicker is that it's even fewer notes to pick from than the pentatonic scale but it still opens up to so much variety. Thanks so much for putting me on to this!
Wow I don't know how you believe, but between you and Guthrie Trapp ,my guitar playing has improved so much in the last month. Understanding is great. Thank you. There's an old song that the hook says " Ain't understanding Mellow "
I have written out several long comments on your various vids, Ian, so let me jst say that you are for me, and I'm sure many others, the very best teacher on YT. This "ghost slide" thing knocked me on the floor. Thank you. Happy Holidays!!!
A truly great lesson, Ian. Congratulations. I can't tell you how much it has extended my musical horizons. I've been practicing memorizing and emphasizing those cord tones and using the major the pentatonic on the tonic chord as you suggested. Then I discovered what you probably already know: the magic of playing major thirds with the chords. Thank you again.
Love this lesson. Every video you put out gives me at least 1 (usually more) “aha” moment(s) and teaches something that just seems to reveal a whole new world to me. I sincerely appreciate all of the free content you put out for us.
I really enjoy your method of teaching. And the pure joy of playing and teaching can be seen and heard which makes you extra invested in learning what you teach. Thank you!
Always a pleasure to hear you groovin’ like that. Whether it’s just 1-3-5’s or sliding in from a b5. Congratulations on the workshops. Big things ahead.
Great lesson... visualizing the different chord shapes is a game changer for guitar solos. The arpeggios are a tasteful addition to sprinkle in during your guitar solos. Love it!
ah man ian ive left so many positive comments on your vids but its truly unbelievable how much more im able to learn and understand guitar from you than any other teacher. Every video i feel like ive basically just upped a level in my playing, and you always seem to have the answers for the questions i knew i wanted to ask, but couldnt figure out how too haha. thank you once again my man. im a pretty broke student right now but ill definitely donate some money to a patron some time soon if you have one
Superb guitar instruction video! You clearly present a straight, understandable, practically approachable path to what can seem a hopeless tangle of scalar underbrush and obscure terrain to players trying to really learn the fretboard enough to begin improvising rather than simply following tabs.
best arpeggio/chord-tone video ever. bravo Stitch - super clear. another break-through lesson for me. great stuff man, you're a masterful teacher - thank you.
Really good video Ian, I think you finally got it through my thick head (God knows I've seen enough of your videos to have understood by now, but I'm just thick I guess) that seeing the chord tone intervals in the inversion you are playing is massive, thanks alot, this has really helped me refine the direction that I need to take.
Subscribed! I have learned from other channels, but yours feels like home. Even though I "know" the technical pieces in this lesson, the way you put it together and perform brings additional "aha" moments. Thank you!
Ipractice like this from G key :1,4,5 chord progresion Using Root, 3rd, 5th,root(next octave)..its realy great to know beter my freetboard.great video like always..apreciate ur efort to help us Thank u..sorry for my english
The greatest point in my opinion about this lesson is to not look at arpeggios as isolated, up/down the neck exercises as that approach really just reinforces a “disassociation” between the why and the how; it makes learners feel that they’re somehow irrelevant or superfluous, but when described this way as, “bits of the chord you’re throwing out to the audience”. You can really see they’re the roadmap to locking into whatever you’re trying to play over.
Great lesson! Thank you so much for making and sharing this! I've always been trying to think about the chord shapes, which just complicated things, but simply thinking about the 1,3,5 in different positions and adding on to that makes so much sense! I just can't believe I didn't think of that myself as it's so obvious! 🥺😆 Cheers!
I've been aware of your videos for a few years, but I just started watching a few of them a couple days ago. I haven't contributed any $$, and I know I'm taking advantage, but I felt compelled to say that you are an exceptional teacher, and that I appreciate the effort you put into making these very helpful videos.
Hey duder...first, your lessons are amazing! Second, speaking for the only person i can....myself...everybody, especially artists, has to support themselves so rock those sponsor plugs. Its exciting to see people succeed doing what they love and I for one am stoked to hear what you think about the gear you use...especially if its a brand who is willing to help you keep on keeping on!!!!
You are so very good teacher. My lead guitar playing makes big improvements. My band mates notice too. They say I play much more melodic and not just fast shred like always. I refer our rhythm guitarist to your RUclips. Thank you for making me better guitar player. My English not too good but I hope you know I say appreciating things.
I always learn something every time I open your channel. Such a resourceful personality. Thanks a lot Chief. If I can suggest something, present a map or sketch would be really help, probably because I am more to technical person. Cheers from Indonesia.
Awesome video . I started doing this from a lesson you did a while ago . Caged rules . Changed my playing dramatically. Cant we just say that you can slide into any thing from any where . Its what i do and seems to work . Isnt it about finishing in key . My teacher used to say i doesnt matter what you do as long as you finish in key .
Thoughts?...I think the trick is to count the pentatonic 1 2 3 5 6. That way the chord arpeggios have the same vocabulary. 1-3-5 == 1-3-5. And then terms like ‘flatten the fifth’ make sense in both worlds (chord tones and scale solo). But only in the major form maybe.
Thank you again for an amazing lesson! I have watched you over the past few years and my playing and technique have exponentially gotten better. You seriously are the best guitar teacher on RUclips, if I lived in Florida, I'd be knocking on your door guitar in hand, ready to jam.
Awesome content finding chord tones within a chord progression coupled with getting a better understanding of the caged system plus soloing. Preciate cha
I was a D'Addario guy for like 15 years and didn't want to jump on the Ernie Ball fanboy bandwagon but a few months ago the local music store didn't have my usual strings in stock, so I went with the EBs and I'm glad I did. They really are better strings. I especially love the Turbo Slinkies for E standard. The perfect blend of 9's and 10's imo. Light enough to bend and play effortlessly but still just heavy enough to be able to dig in without your strings flopping all over the place
Your lessons have been invaluable and I’m still in a place where you just keep tossing me stuff and a percentage sticks. Going to be a long enjoyable road. This vid for some reason really clicked. Months of caged to pentatonic but still in a comfy box, this for some reason tied lots together. A long happy road ahead, thanks for the insight
Thank you so much for this lesson Stitch! Recently I've been struggling to find and highlight the chord tones in my solos. Your demonstrations and explanations were clear and very helpful. Now to start practicing!
I am sitting here on a dark 5th November evening in uk fireworks going off all around it’s guy fawkes night here (look it up on google) and just soaking this lesson in Keep it up Ian
John Masson I’m not from there but a Brit I know had a Guy Fawkes party for a bunch of us here n the states. You guys are fun ppl! Have yet to meet a Brit I don’t like
Great lesson! You've got the chops AND the teaching skills. Maybe it's because you remind me of 'Jerry'...but your joy of making music comes through so loud and clear.
I swear Stich is the best teacher around, I would love to go watch this man play a gig
Absolutely, but the problem would be that every time he played a song I'd need to pick up my guitar and work on whatever he was playing. LOLOL
He is the BEST at least for what I need to learn.
This is by far the most important guitar lesson EVER hands down
Thanks!
"Nine, Nine, Nine " Isn't that German for "No! No! No!".
I agree Chuckle.
No, you shouldn’t put your hands down, then you can’t practice
Agree completely, Chuckle. If an almost-intermediate player can practice their way through this and have these light bulb moments, I can't think of a single other video on RUclips that can get you from this level to the next. Great lesson, thank you for everything you do for us home made guitar players...
Brilliant lesson. You're definitely one of the best guitar teachers on RUclips
Excellent presentation and thorough explanation. much appreciated sir
Thank you again for an amazing lesson! I have watched you over the past few years and my playing and technique have exponentially gotten better. You seriously are the best guitar teacher on RUclips, if I lived in Florida, I'd be knocking on your door guitar in hand, ready to jam.
the point about ghost slides is super helpful. thanks!
"This is all about making music" ... I forget that at times.
Awesome content finding chord tones within a chord progression coupled with getting a better understanding of the caged system plus soloing. Preciate cha
When the algorithm works well. Glad to be here.
You are such a good teacher!
Thank you so much for this lesson Stitch! Recently I've been struggling to find and highlight the chord tones in my solos. Your demonstrations and explanations were clear and very helpful. Now to start practicing!
Rock on Stitch, great stuff as always. Met you at LOCKN, hope to catch you at another festival / show sometime in the future.
I had abadoned my guitar for many years, you made me get back to my music. thank you

Great lesson! You've got the chops AND the teaching skills.
Maybe it's because you remind me of 'Jerry'...but your joy of making music comes through so loud and clear.
Thanks Ian! You rock! Your videos are always easy to understand. I find I learn the most from you. You make guitar fun.
Stitch does it again... Thanks so much, Stitch!
Great lesson. Eye opener on the arpeggios - triads relation.
Watching this, combining with your recent CAGED master class video along with the Patreon practice sessions......the light is getting closer!!
