Every time I release a video on RUclips, I make a series of extra content and practice sessions that go deeper. I'm adding new videos all the time! Can't wait to see you there.
Sometimes when practicing your soloing techniques and ideas we can feel like a deer in headlights. What do we do? Where do we go? In order to feel comfortable when improvising, you must practice in a way that makes you comfortable and able to retain the ideas. Using this practice method of "Flight Plans" on guitar will help you practice in bite size chunks. When you add them up, you will feel comfortable, be able to move anywhere you want, and play anything in your "wheel house". Rock on and I hope you enjoy!

Not a shredder, not a show off, but probably one of the best guitar teachers I've ever learnt from... You're awesome!
I do shred but its only a part of a larger repertoire . Shredding is fine if the phrasing is good . For me when shredding gets to long it becomes boring . IMHO phrasing is much more important . String skipping and note bending within the octave makes for great phrasing . Players like Santana and Clapton are masters if phrasing and you can feel the music when they play .
Ive been noodling on guitar aimlessy for over 10 years. This was an eye opening lesson for me. Tied so many things together. Awesome teacher!
I think this is the best lesson I’ve ever seen on YT
Agreed - unconsciously competent
Hands down.
Top 5 for me. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
At first I was like no way this is the best lesson on YT, then I watched it and now I'm like "yeah this is the lesson lesson on YT."
Totally agree! This has been the most sensible and easy to understand as well as inspiring lesson I’ve seen on RUclips or elsewhere. Awesome lesson!!
Extremely rare content being taught by the preeminent improvisational teacher on the internet. Thanks for continuing to put out amazing content and presenting it in understandable terms. ✌🏼
Glad it was helpful!
you are blowing so many minds, and more and more Brains are sticking at amps, so guitar Center Needs to invent new cleaning Tools :-)
I've seen 1000s of guitar instruction videos on RUclips... This one definitely one of the best
Easily the best intermediate teacher i have ever seen. Inspires me to practice :)
Thank you for opening new doors to many possibilities while quietly closing old doors to my frustration.
This has been helpful in ways that nobody has ever been able to articulate. Very achievable, progressively more involved, and effective. I'm grateful for this lesson
This is awesome! I love the call and response of the Am and Amaj pentas. It's like a married couple having a conversation. The wife is all positive and wants the husband to do some yard work. The husband has just gotten off work, is grumpy and trying to slide out of it. Then, you could reverse the roles, where the wife really wants it done, and is getting stern, while the husband lightens up, and says, okay dear I'll do it.
Brilliant analogy of a flight plan. So simple yet so effective.
This channel has been a constant motivating factor for my playing and I can’t be more thankful
Thanks! You rock, man. Your voice and presentation are easy to listen to for extended periods of time. And your teaching is unique and extremely effective.
The search is over... here is the ultimate guitar channel 🙌🏼
I love the "Flight Plan" analogy.
Can't thank you enough for all of your lessons. You are helping so many people especially, people like me, who can't afford music lessons. Look after yourself and your family. Dave from the UK.
Just spread the word my man. Thanks for the kind words.
Definitely
Recommended Stich Method to a kid and his Dad in a guitar store when I was buying a looper pedal. Told them Ian Stich changed my life as a guitar player and it’s hard to say what would happen if you actually started with him from the beginning! Wish I had these kinds of lessons from the beginning!
Every beginner guitarist needs this lesson period!
I've been playing scales for months. Knowing chords for years. Finally this man showed me how to combine them, how to play around with them. In a most natural easy going way. Thank You, Master!
I loved this lesson, me myself thought it was so cool. I am really glad you liked it.
I literally am just on the verge of searching for this! I'm currently lost and dumbfounded what was the next step in my guitar journey, thank you for this!
This is extremely helpful. There are so many tools an improvisor can use (chord tones, scales, chromatics, neighbor tones, substitutions, sequences, and rhythms) that it is easy to get overwhelmed by the choices, combinations, and permutations available. Your lesson provides a manageable path to learn everything without making it seem like you have to learn it all at the same time. Many thanks -- blessings to you and your family!
Jesus you’re a good teacher more people need to know about you honestly
OMG...if I'd had a teacher like this when I was 10 years old back in 1973...maybe I could've become a pro guitarist??? Amazing ability to cut through the junk and TEACH in such a "plain English" way!!! Now at 57...learning how to *stitch it all together!!! Best teacher on RUclips bar none!!!
I think the more I learn from you, the more I can close my eyes 👁️ when I play..thank you B.K.M
What is not to like about Stich! A truly great teacher with a gift for connection. Thanks man.
Stitch is a WIZARD
This is incredible thank u so much because I know there’s a lot of guitarists out there that this seems trivial to but us guys that don’t know this is an amazing video!! Imagine all the guys out there with the penny dropping saying oh this is how u do it !! This is great Way to practice to get used to soloing and hitting them sweet spots and roots etc thanks so much stitch it is much appreciated cheers from Ireland 🇮🇪 stay safe and be well !!! Brian
"Unconsciously competent" -- I love that! Makes me think of the old Bullwinkle & Rocky cartoon when Bullwinkle (as a magician) reaches into his hat to pull out a rabbit, and a rhinoceros head emerges. He says, "Oh! Don't know my own strength!"
The most concise and crystal clear video on a very difficult topic. You are the best. You r the reason I am still playing. God bless you. See u at patreon.
I love this! It sounds like you’re actually jamming with different people as you change “flight plans”.
Never really comment but this lesson is great. Great way to get started on naturally seeing the shapes as the chords move.
I have so much respect for you, man. You're obviously a genuinely good person. Thank you.
I was sold on the "Flight Plan" in the first six notes of your intro and I learnt a new progression in the first 3 minutes of your video. Cheers to your insight, your approach, your talent, your love of music; I could go on and on but I must finish watching your video.
Man, these lessons keep getting better and better! It feels like you are revealing long guarded secrets held by the guitar gods... what will the world look like when everyone becomes a truly competent player through the stich method??? Anyways, thank you for your lessons they are beyond valuable. Anyone who enjoys these lessons should become a patreon member, its worth it.
look, you're a WARM person and nice teacher.you can see it.so many viewers.i was so impressed, that i watched even what i know.love your methods blessing
The contents of your videos are simply the BEST! Very easy to understand. I always learn new things. Thank you!
What a great lesson. When you revealed the chord progression to be mixolydian, I was like "dude's got a complete flight plan for this lesson as well." Very meta. When you asked us to spot what you were playing in the ending example and I actually managed to, I knew I had learnt something deep down. Time to captain some acoustic flights.
When play notes within chords, I SUCK at moving from one chord area to the next. By the time I get to where the chord is, it’s time to move to the next one. So I doubled the time of each chord from two beat per chord to four beats per chord on the backing track loop. Same method, but the extra time greatly reduced the self induced stress.
Same issue here, I'll have to give that a try.
Yeah thats what my earlier instructor said
What you did there is one of the best ways to improve your playing. When something proves too challenging, find a way to simplify it. When you get it down in the simpler way, go back to trying it the regular way. For instance, if you want to improve speed on a solo, break the solo down into small parts and practice them individually over a backing track at a comfortable speed. Gradually increase the BPM until comfortable. Once you get one segment down good, start practicing it with the following segment. Over and over and over again. You can find drum backing tracks at all ranges of BPM on youtube. Good luck to all and remember to pay it forward.
Just finished an hour long jamming with this jamming track at 4:30am, I love these lessons !!!!!
Man I like the way you explained to us about the captain and pilot. Best RUclips teacher
Good analogy and great method to becoming a good improviser. You’ve come a long way as an educator! Bravo!
I think this video was/is significant for me where I'm at with my playing. It was definitely an eye opener. I believe this will enhance my playing, moving me to a new level going forward. You really are a great teacher...
You're making me a believer. You're very capable captain of the"guitar plane".Easy and clear to mostly everyone who has just a small clue what a chord is.Awesome flight w/ you.Hope we'll be able to land it all.HI from sLOVEnia,EU
This was so excellent! Thank you for sharing this lesson, I am at an intermediate level and getting into more advanced stuff but feel like Ive been getting in a rut, I know my pentatonics and some of the modes, I understand stand how the caged system works and how chord tones are used but trying to memorize everything at once and learning all this theory makes me feel like my brain is on overload lol and getting in the way of creative playing, this was exactly the lesson I needed and I had fun just jamming over the backing track mixing it up between major/minor pentatonics and mixolydian, thanks again Stitch, rock on!
You're the GOAT, by far best RUclips teacher for intermediate players who want to become more creative
Its like you read my mind on improvisation and soloing problems, not just this video but so many others.
As another pilot... I've filed this flight plan and hope to be cleared for takeoff. Keep 'em coming Ian. Thank you.
I love your smile and the joy you have for teaching. Great material too. Subscribed!
This is probably what I've been needing for the past year. This is by far my favorite lesson from you so far, you are truly the best guitar teacher on RUclips.
Dude you just took my plateau and fucking smashed it to pieces! What a great channel, you rock
thanks stitch
ive watched so many others videos about guitar
but your methods of teaching are the ones
that present information so unlike others
and contain info in way where anyone can understand
of how to make music
your methods of teaching
is far superior to others
and how you explain how things work
is so simple and
most of all TO THE POINT
i will tell all
to visit your site
tolearn how to make music
with the guitar
bf
Mixing the two scales it enriches your solo.It is a crazy flight plan, but it makes sence when you hear it.It becomes a note rich scale w/ a lot more possibilities than a pentatonic scale gives you.Never thought of it this way.Inlightning
Oh wow. Literally in 18 minutes I learned to sound like Jerry Garcia. Thank you for this! 😎
Ian, you are quickly becoming my go to channel for the things that pertain to my interests in regard to all things guitar. You're hitting all the marks that an old man like me should have been focused on a long time ago. Thanks.
Kevin O'Rourke
So glad to be helping and a part of the journey.
I've been jamming with backtracks. Always confused about what scales to use, now I know what to do. Great lesson.
Best single lesson ever. My head just exploded. Knowing the cage system as well as major/minor scales and understanding the concept of modes, putting this into action = instant good to great solos. Thank you so much.
Ian, I can't tell you how much this one lesson helped me stop noodling in the pentatonic and actually develop a plan for practicing. I was struggling to figure out how to solo over this very chord progression. After watching this, I put into my looper and went through three or four "plans" that gave me a different feel. Brilliant!
You are without a doubt the best teacher on RUclips period. Plus a mind reader, because I was feeling overwhelmed yesterday practicing improvising and you just simplified it for me. Thank you sooo much! 🤗
Wow, thank you!
It really helps seeing the process of how to get comfortable applying these concepts; mapping out a flight plan makes it less intimidating and more practicable. Thanks for another great lesson!
I love your colloquial way of teaching,it really helps.
That flight plan on the mixalidian reminded me in 1989 or 90 when the Greatfuldead where playing in Philadelphia I was walking to the ship yard and all these deadheads all over i talked with some of them one told me his father was the captain police officer me coming from a small town I freaked out on all the gathering I just remembered that time when your flight plan playing that mixalidian scale that was cool.
By far and away the best guitar teacher on RUclips.
So clear, so creative, so understanding of the struggles.
Ian my friend, you consistently amaze me. Keep going!
Thank you
sir you are a gem this has given me lots of ideas been stuck in a rut for a while this makes so much sense brilliant oh and i love the tone of that guitar thank you so much my good man keep it up
In secondary school (1970s) I got bored with practicing “standard” scales, doh ray f me I’m off, so its just strumming for decades. Last years or so I’ve learnt some theory and sound engineering and trying to write songs, and this very nice stranger keeps putting up these vids that give me ideas like, what! it isn’t just doh ray me!
This mans face is pure joy when playing
Stich is God!!!! The best guitar teacher in the Net!!! Thanks from Argentina!
Thanks Stitch! One of the best lessons I’ve come across on YTube.
wow! all my questions about soloing has been answered in this video and so clearly represented. thank you so much! you're the best!
No, You Are The Best
This video is well worth the time. Has helped me immensely! Thank you for making this concept easy to follow!! I can't believe what I hear coming from my amp after going through the lesson only three times
Awesome to hear!
Incredible lesson! You have a wonderful talent for teaching sir. Thank you!!
If I had to describe your content in one word: Authentic.
Thank you for putting up these lessons, and sharing your inspiring content with us.
Awesome lesson. One of the best teachers on here. Love how you teach by different thought process
i can hear a lot of Jerry Garcia in this lesson, cool lesson, ordered my first electric guitar, Been playing acoustic at intermediate level on and off 20 yrs but the past 5 yrs thanks to RUclips I've learned more than I did in 15yrs without, I can't Read music so I am learning theory now by playing it.getting there lol
Cool brother thanks for your help learning different methods!
God bless you & your family.❤🎸
Thank you Sir ! Great stuff.Just what I needed a rut-busting lesson 👍😁
Dude..you are so frickn awesome...this was the chords and notes I was looking for..to go with a song I wrote...ive learned so much in the past 3 months than me playing for 10 years watching utube how to play songs..and teaching myself..not in a rut anymore..its like i can't wait to wake up in the morning..the 4th thing I do.. Besides coffee, #1and#2..thanks Bro..B.K.M
Ian, I have been with you from the beginning of your site opening and still loving it. You rock! This lesson is right where I am at in my journey. Thank you so much! For everyone else, stick with it and review the basics. Have fun
This video is increadable. Thanks it's what I've been looking for.
I am at a stage at guitar where you provide the best practise lessons for me. Thank you so much, great stuff!
Videos about soloing chord progressions are the best. I always have a problem though trying to decipher which chord you all are moving to. It would be great if when you move to the next chord in the progression you called it out loud. Maybe that way I could follow and learn better and it wouldn't feel like I'm sitting in the back of the plane . Thanks Ian
I think this may be your very most helpful video. I keep coming back to this one for inspiration. Flight plans rule.
Profoundly simple yet usable method 👍👍
“You’re going from first officer to captain.” Amen Stich.
best improv video ive seen man! this is gooooold!!
awesome video! very very helpful!!!! I was stuck and now i know how to approach my practices much better now. thanks!
You are awesome. Thank you for this!!! I will be putting it in my practice time this week.
nice thank you, i was always intimidated by chord tone soloing and seeing how im a bass player first have a bad habit of starting on lowest root. but that simple little highest root backwards lick is gonna be perfect practice for me
I am so grateful for you. You are swell and I hope to see you at Phish show later this summer. Peace friend
Ian, you always come up with what is needed to get to the next level. What’s more always easily understandable. Hats off to you man.
Thank you for a really good lesson. I have been struggling for sometime, not knowing how to learn to solo; you just showed me. Fantastic!
This is INCREDIBLE! Saving this one to watch over and over. Thank you, Ian!
I agree! This is one of my favorites
Excellent......Thank you! Love your teaching style and your playing!
Really love this different approach to soloing... Great Video!
Simple chords + simple progression + simple flight plan = a world of improv knowledge.
Thanks my friend. Been playing a long time, but sometimes you need little refresher like this to either open a new door or to get you out of a rut. By the way, I heard a little bit of Jerry-esque "Row Jimmy" type soloing in there near the beginning. Cool!
Amazing lesson. As a beginner I couldn't follow everything you explained, yet I dream of playing just like you. Thanks.
Casey Jones you better watch your speed…. slick intro solo. You’ve mastered the art of melody. I’ve been teaching my students to play vocal melodies one verse then pentatonic licks on the next, until they can mix and match.
You’ve been a big inspiration on this and it’s given me an edge on other teachers who can shred circles around me.
I'm proud of myself. I was thinking that it was A mixo. Six months ago I had no clue about modes . Glad that I finally decided to learn more about them! Thanks for all knowledge you share Ian!!
I love the way you construct your lessons and your overall demeanor Stitch! Its enjoyable and you incorporate various ways people learn (since we all learn differently) :) Thank you kind sir!
Deliciously accessible, thank you for the positive vibrational force multipliers you're adding to the world through these lessons!
You have consistently put out outstanding information for years. Thank you.
Beautiful guitar!
I understood everything and payed attention this time can't wait till my fingers warm up Im freezing right now this is seriously explained in just enough planning which I haven't heard before it's makes me feel confident already if O get frustrated I will watch over and over with it I can't believe how cold it is in San Diego this morning course I'm in east county hilly section with the 30 to 40 minutes inland from the coast awesome lesson plan to partake in many more I'm conforable with your approach and experience in projecting to students, had a juliard grad back in NJ was similar in confidence building after my previous guy the owner that scaled me to death fir a couple years but thank God he did and I dedicated 4 hours per day 4 days of the week luckily I had my own business could afford to spend the time to it, fell on the wagon when I got a divorce set the love of my life down my 76 USA Strat well 20 years later I'm still alive sober again and fully ready to dive deep semi retired.. made it back to getting chops back in the groove awesomeness
My heads on straight again too wow
