Finally, after watching toooooooooo many youtube videos, at last, I find a guitarist who explains clearly and demystifies modes. You are in a class alone.
This is so timely. Yesterday I was sitting in a cafe and they were playing Daft Punk's "Get Lucky". I've been working on your Patreon chord tone exercises and this sounded like a really cool progression to jam to so I I took a quick look online: it's in B Dorian with the progression Bm7, D, F#m7, E. When I got home I made a quick loop and started soloing with notes from the Amaj scale starting on the B. As I started to explore this scale on different parts of the neck, I found myself swapping between B Dorian and Bm pentatonic. Then I started trying to hit chord tones at the appropriate times. An hour later I emerged from what was almost a guitar trance. It sounded .... so .... good.
I was completely illiterate music theory wise until i found your videos a few years back Ian. Your lessons changed my life! I was trying to solo over an Em to A progression and noticed that the 6th didnt sound right unless it was sharp. After googling I figured out it was the dorian mode. After scratching my head for another hour I found this video which explained everything I need to know. Thank you so much! Ps - have you listened to any Michael Schenker before? The chord progression I mentioned is from UFOs Space Child. Amazing solo to check out if you havent already. Thanks again!
Great explanation! I'd like to add another way of thinking about Dorian which really helped me a lot. I like to relate the modes to either the major or minor scales. So when I think Dorian I think minor scale BUT with a major 6th. That's just one note different and that simplifies it for my underdeveloped brain. But the main reason why I think this is useful is because I (like most people) like to play out of the minor pentatonic a lot. So all I need to do is figure out where that major 6th falls inside my pentatonic shapes and Bob's your uncle, I'm playing in the Dorian mode. I tend to think of chord tones to target too which you mentioned but sometimes I like to rock the pentatonic and just add a flavor note like the 6th to spice it up. Hope that's a helpful alternative way to wrap your head around modes in general.
New subscriber here, after playing for 20 plus years I learned all of the modes long ago however your videos on modal playing have put it all together for me. I finally feel like I truly get it ALL now, you are a fantastic teacher!
I'm an intermediate and just started playing with jam tracks, I came across one a few days ago using E Dorian and I felt so discouraged because I didn't understand why what I was playing sounded bad to my ears (I was using E minor to solo🙃). After searching video after video I found yours and I feel so confident and understanding. I haven't deep dived into your channel yet but I'm really hoping you have videos explaining all of the modes like this. This was perfect ❤
Mr Stitch: I want you to know how much I appreciate your efforts. I teach golf and watching you teach guitar (which I love) has helped me teach my craft. Your passion for what you do and the love you project in teaching guitar has helped me translate and speak better to my students. I found you one day while searching for a way to jam better to Phish and Jerry Garcia. I have studied and tried to copy for my own enjoyment at home for years how these two played and your simple language and communication style have helped me understand and connect those dots I was missing for years. I live In Florida also down in Charlotte County and if we ever cross paths I would love to buy you a pint and say thanks in person. til then ill do what I can to donate and buy your things provided that I can afford from your downloads and such. Have a blessed day and know that people like me can really really appreciate what style of teaching you bring to the table! so so much love. FGI
I have a relative newcomer to guitar and theory and I can't tell you how many videos and websites I've used in an attempt to understand dorian mode....and was left frustrated. With your video I get it..I finally get it. I can't tank you enough for this. You are a fantastic teacher.
Another great video Stich! I've been pulling my hair out trying to comprehend these different scale modes. As I was listening to your Dorian solo, I think I heard bits and pieces of Joe Cocker's version of "don't let me be misunderstood". Thanks to your help, it's all slowly starting to come together.
Thank you so much for explaining the modal system in the clearest most concise way I've ever seen it done by any guitar teacher!! I've spent years trying to get a proper handle on the Dorian mode and in the process I came to it from a different direction. I wrote a couple of instrumental guitar jam songs and soloed over the progressions using the chord tones of each chord to form arpeggios. In the key of D Dorian, I'd go up the ladder in the Dm chord tones, and down the ladder using the E major chord tones, often beginning on the sus4 tone of the E major to get the ball rolling. But that became boring, so I'd switch between the chord tones and the scale tones of the underlying chords in a two chord improv. I dunno if I'm making any sense here, but what I'm trying to say is that even though I have no formal music theory training and am entirely self-taught, right from my earliest beginnings as a guitarist, I still got to where your explanations on this video are leading. If I'd had this video for a reference back in 1973, think of all the time I coulda saved!!🙂
I’ve been working on modes for a while and you’re teaching has the most common sense and helps me understand. Thank you so much I just subscribed to your channel.
Hey man, I just found your channel randomly and I’m so glad. I picked guitar back after a brain injury and the way I learn, well it’s not easy. Anyways, could see Dorian mode was simple but for whatever reason, couldn’t grasp it when trying to learn. I immediately got it when you were talking about it, before you even showed examples. Have subscirbed, wanted to say thanks!
Good lesson, Ian. Any mention of modes used to scare me to death. After watching just a couple of your videos I finally realized how simple the idea of modes is.
That has got to be one of the most straight forward explanations of the dorian mode, and modes in general. One of the best 17 minute investments ever! Many thanks!
Wow, that was a very clear and concise explanation of Dorian, and, by extension, modes in general. Kudos to you. I will be watching more of your videos
Another great one Ian. For people who haven't checked it out, the Patreon page is awesome with the follow-up stepwise practice videos helping the RUclips posts to develop and ingrain some of skills/knowledge. THANKS!
Dang, why did it take so long to come across your channel? This lesson on Dorian was fantastic! I like the way you explain what's going on. Liked & subscribed!
I've seen other videos about "modes" and I swear I think they are deliberately trying to make things unintelligible! This video is awesomely concise and to the point and perfectly understandable. THANK YOU for clearing up this "secret".
Ian, THIS was a SUPREME vid of a (sometimes) complex and confusing subject. EXPERTLY delivered and explained !!! I haven't read the responses, yet, but I'll bet MANY subscribers just had a major "aHaaa" moment. VERY well done....it's just proof of why you're the best on RUclips !!! .... Crossbow
Thank you, never heard such a clear explanation of modes ever. I think I really understand it for the first time. So glad I came across your channel (I think your ‘Dorian is the 2 of’ is brilliant!)
It's good that you reinforce the proper way of thinking (Dorian is the second mode, asking ok X is second note of which major scale.) I'm lazy so I just jam in the parent major scale using the major scale patterns, I haven't learned the 'modal' patterns yet so much. You're definitely in the top teachers on RUclips and I hope you drown in subscribers eventually.
I like how you explain the nuts and bolts to playing guitar or music in general. It's fun learning how to play a certain song i like but i get way more mileage out of videos like this. Thanks
Awesome instructional! I was trying to research some Iommi scales and found this tutorial after Thespectorsound clued me in on Iommio's use of Dorianin the end of Symptom of the Universe, then I went on to this video and it helped explain it even further...sounds to me like Symptom of the Universe and Planet Caravan are both Dorian.
That help quite a bit. I've been playing since 94 just teaching myself as I go. I realize a better concept of scales and progressions is what I need but the modes always confuse me. I have been in a huge rut and this helped a bit. Thanks man.
Very much enjoyed this. As I was experimenting in Dorian Over that Am to Bm loop, it sure reminded me of the sound of that wonderful solo in Light My Fire that I used a listen to endlessly back in the late 60s/early 70s on my parents "stereo" console.
I can't believe I finally understand this perfectly and with just one lesson. I have watched several other players try to explain it and it never sank in. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Btw, it's a little late for most of your vids, but the backing tracks are often way too low in the mix. Please fix it from now on. Thanks again.
Really great lesson Thanks Stitch! Have a quick question. when doing this can you hit the chord tones of the minor dorian chord or only suppose to hit the root?
thanks for the lessons i been playing 40 yrs on n off n since watching ur vids with guitar in hand ive come a long way i used to play solos that were memorised now i improvise im enjoying my playing a lot more pls keep em coming their really instructive n would to jam with u sometime dude :)
That was crystal clear !! Thx a bunch. And........even though English is not my mother tongue, you managed to make it simple. I feel like I have FINALLY understood what this was all about. So, I really wanna say thanks one more time. / Merci mille fois !!
This was really a good lesson! You explained Dorian very well. I’ve been playing the guitar for a long time and know all of the major scales, minor scales and where to play them on the neck but never took time much to know what mode I was playing in which key. “The 2 of…” is a really insightful way to think of the concept of Dorian. 👏👏 by the way you have a new subscriber because of this lesson!
Stich, not sure if you're reading this. Rest assured dude your teaching styles are reaching heads. Full time guitarist/instructor here and want to say thx for what you do and who you are. When in Portland, plz holla! 🎼
Oye Como Va is one of the most Dorian songs I personally know. The Am7-D7 chord progression is solidly Dorian-the third of the D7 chord is the #6 of the A-Dorian scale (i.e. the F#), so it captures that “Dorian flavor."
Reine H idk enough of his stuff to know, honestly. I only know that song because-if memory serves-Stitch covered it once before. It was only in playing around with it that I realized the ii-V chord progression plays up that sharp-6 in the Dorian scale, giving us that flavor.
Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath is that same Em-D Vamp pretty much though the whole song. The end solo uses E Dorian pretty heavily for that cool jazzy sound. I'm sure there are some straight pentatonic lines in there too but you can definitely "feel the Dorian" I remember that being the first time I heard a "jazz" sounding solo that I liked.
Guitarist friend. Yesterday I was in the direct of Guitar hard. I find your method and theory to apply to the amazing tour. If I take this video and pass it to playlist learn electric guitar. Greetings and continue playing the guitar or any musical instrument for a long time. Thanks friend for being there. 🙂 💫 Rock on!
This is how I've been explaining modes to people for a while now, but I could never find a way to distill it down to, simply, "Is the 2 of..." Thank you. ProTip: It's really a very easy concept once you take the time to learn the major scale. Just do it.
My friend this is one of the best Dorian videos I've ever seen. Yopu explained more and revealed more in a fraction of the time than anyone else. Thanks !!!
Finally, after watching toooooooooo many youtube videos, at last, I find a guitarist who explains clearly and demystifies modes. You are in a class alone.
"Who does #2 work for!!" I can't thank you enough for all of these classes. Keep up the great work, thank you so much!
Austin Powers!!!
Oh yeah baby
Groovy yeah!
Ha!

Dear Stitch: Something really clicked for me on this one. It was one of the most valuable videos I've seen in a couple of years. THANKS!

Ps - have you listened to any Michael Schenker before? The chord progression I mentioned is from UFOs Space Child. Amazing solo to check out if you havent already.
Thanks again!
I really appreciate you’re videos. You’re truly one of the most insightful guitar teachers on RUclips.
What a great teacher. Just gives the info, cut and dry, not overcomplicated, little to no nuance. Thank you

I actually have a video on that and link it around the 15:50 time stamp
Sometimes the technical stuff can get...well ,over technical .a simple thought through like yours is brilliant thanks.
Never seen modes explained so simply and in a way I can actually understand. I finally get it after watching tons of lessons. Quality tutorial 👍
New subscriber here, after playing for 20 plus years I learned all of the modes long ago however your videos on modal playing have put it all together for me. I finally feel like I truly get it ALL now, you are a fantastic teacher!

Best Dorian tutorial i've found, by far. I understood the theory but didnt know how to get the dorian sound. I do know! Thanks.
I'm a year or two off from understanding most of what you said but I still learned a bunch. Thank you.
I've been skirting around this for ages, finally, a simple explanation. Thank you.
I have a relative newcomer to guitar and theory and I can't tell you how many videos and websites I've used in an attempt to understand dorian mode....and was left frustrated. With your video I get it..I finally get it. I can't tank you enough for this. You are a fantastic teacher.
I was looking for a way to expliain relative and absolute modes to student in an uncomplicated way - you just did it - superb job my man !
This is about the best explanation of Dorian and how to use it I seen.
You helped me see the pentatonic in the Dorian and you made it look playable. It worked! Thanks!
Thank you so much for explaining the modal system in the clearest most concise way I've ever seen it done by any guitar teacher!! Almost 18min of Dorian and not a single mention to major 6th! You are the man Ian!!!
I find the more simple the better. Although if you watch my Phish Sand video... well I’m on that 6th like white on rice.
Ha ha ha...LOVIN' it. Ian !!!! .... Crossbow

Good lesson, Ian. Any mention of modes used to scare me to death. After watching just a couple of your videos I finally realized how simple the idea of modes is.
That has got to be one of the most straight forward explanations of the dorian mode, and modes in general. One of the best 17 minute investments ever! Many thanks!
this may have just been my doorway to modes. First explanation I've seen that made any kind of sense to me - thanks!
Wow, that was a very clear and concise explanation of Dorian, and, by extension, modes in general. Kudos to you. I will be watching more of your videos
Hey Stitch! Thank you thank you. Finally I understand this concept. You really are a great teacher.
I've naturally done this but to be able to conceptualize it like this is huge. Been playing for a long time and I still learn from this guy. TY
Another great one Ian. For people who haven't checked it out, the Patreon page is awesome with the follow-up stepwise practice videos helping the RUclips posts to develop and ingrain some of skills/knowledge. THANKS!

One of the best guitar videos I’ve ever come across. Great way of explaining things with out all the fluff.
Great lesson thank you for taking the time to do this I've been playing for a long time but I learn so much from your videos.

Just bought your blues masterclass and plan on buying the rest. You are a great teacher and a good dude. Thanks for what you do!
Thank you so much! I've been watching lots of videos trying to get my head around this and you finally made me understand it.
I love your vibrato technique and this lesson was easy to understand and informative.
This is a Human that helps make the world a better place

I had a light bulb moment, you gave me the key to unlock the door. I knew it would happen I just didn't know when or how.
This is a fantastic video and lesson. Really the best one I’ve come across on understanding this mode.
U make everything easy and clear you are awesome
very easy to understand. I really like your channel. very helpful.
thanks sir!

U R a force of good in the universe. You’re radiant.
Brilliant. Clear and full of stuff I can use, even though I’m a sax player.

This was such a useful lesson and helped me with the missing puzzle piece for soloing. Thank you
No one ever made it plain like that. Thanks man.
Great video. Thanks for explaining Dorian. So much clearer now. Your videos are awesome!! You have helped my lead playing tremendously. D.

Excellent Video, Brilliant explanation of the Dorian mode,👍👍👍.
Take care,
Melbourne, Australia.
Simply a great lesson! I now understood Dorian and can use it! Thank you!
Great lesson 🙏🏽 love that blotter art :)
I can't believe I finally understood this "crap" (frustration speaking). Thank you very much!
Thank you for finally explaining this!!! I now have more knowledge from your video that I've ever gotten from others' videos and their explanations.
3:40 As a new dad, this really reflects my life over the last few months.
This just turned a light bulb on !!Thank you 🙏 👍👍👍
You are fantastic! Thank you for this teaching!
That was a bunch.
I like your lovely little jams.
Your lessons are always great Stitch... I particularly liked this one.. what a great explanation and breakdown ..
As always, another great lesson. Keep 'em comin', Ian. I just may learn about modes after all! ;-)
Best modes lesson I’ve seen. The penny has finally dropped for me!
Awesome video. You're very great man. Thanks for making it simple. Can you do a lesson on how to find and how to use add9 chords
This is great! Thanks for this killer explanation!
Amazing explanation... the best I've seen
Kid who did the art on the back wall, I gave your dad a like.
Thanks !!!
Excellent explanation, thank you so much!!! This is going to change the way I improvise so much!!!!
Best explanation of Dorian I’ve ever heard. Great job!
Dude you are so good at teaching... thank you so much
Excellent instruction. Simplifying. Thank you.
Fantastic lessons, sir. I really enjoy your videos.
Excellent video…and great cast!
Just love lessons like this just taking it all in and putting it all together thanks colin
