Every time I release a video on RUclips, I make a series of extra content and practice sessions that go deeper. I'm adding new videos all the time! Can't wait to see you there.
I see it all the time. You know what scale to use, but when you improvise, it doesn't sound as amazing as you want it to. This is because as guitarists, we spend a lot of time figuring out what works so much, that we sometimes forget there is a human side to melody. Here we are taking a look at how just 3 notes can change the way you approach your improvisation and make you feel closer to your music. PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO WITH SOMEONE WHO YOU THINK WOULD ENJOY IT.

Thanks Stich. This is EXACTLY where I feel stuck on the instrument. I know my chords and fundamental theory, my 5 pentatonic positions and blue notes, but when I go to improvise it lacks emotion. Just spattering notes noodling over the top that don't seem to be going anywhere... simplifying it down to 3 notes and focusing on emotion and rhythm seems like a great exercise for me right now.
One natural addition to this list would be playing dynamics. Mixing up the volume of the 3 notes and attack style can also have a huge impact. Of course, you were naturally doing some of this, but it would be useful to point out. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

Exactly my suggestion with volume. You might try working on your phrasing, keeping it short and simple like this but also creating a conversation, think of happy birthday, call and respond.

Nice lesson! A few more techniques to try with these 3 notes:
    - trills (rapid hammer on / pull off / hammer on / pull off / etc.)
    - double stops (with the C on the 5th fret of the 3rd string, and the E on the 5th fret of the 2nd string)
    - unison bends -- bend the D up to an E on the 3rd string, and alternate playing that E with playing the E on the 2nd string (5th fret)

I decided to subscribbe after yoiu said: "Follow the rules"! Our Zeitgeist is "brake the rules", "think outside the box", "deconstruct", etc. People want to break the rules without knowing the rules, they want to think outside the box, before knowing their box and so on. Music has rules and these rules are important. Master them and you will be free. Freedom is navegating within the rules. The rules will tell you when to bend them. Keep up, man... Your lessons are inspiring...

This is what I needed. My guitar teacher has been trying to get me to solo and I sound like that guy who gets in a fast car, hits the gas, spins out and hits the wall. This tells me how to take everything I already know how to do - slides, bends, pre-bends, hammer-ons and pull-offs - and put them together. The big ones for me were the rythmic hammer-ons and pull-offs. Also braking - I'm inconsistent with my braking. This is good stuff for me to work on!

You’re a good man, though at times too hard on yourself. No one cares if you hit an occasional sour note; you’re doing all of us a tremendous favor just by sharing your knowledge. Thank you!
I’ve been playing guitar for decades, mostly in classic rock cover bands. I can play intricate solos. But each song I learn is its own silo. I probably know 100 different solos, yet I have no (or very limited) ability to use a lick or a phrase from one song in another song.
I finally began taking lessons when I retired four years ago. Now I know all kinds of fun stuff about scales, arpeggios, etc. I actually have enjoyed learning the theory. But making actual music with all that theory? Not a chance. For some reason, I just can’t get across that bridge. Anybody else feel this way?

    • @phatman811
      @phatman811 3 года назад +4

takes years to apply newly learned concepts. After some time and constant practice you’ll be able to write with it and eventually improvising using the stuff you learned from theory. Took me years to make decent lines with arpeggio’s. The minor pentatonic scale is an arpeggio with a 4th, just another piece of music theory, its something we played and listened to for years and years, arguably the most popular scale for guitarist. Imagine an alternate universe where simple triads were the most popular, the pentatonic scale would probably seem more complex. there was a time when we all couldnt play a G chord but we kept going til the calluses formed and you can do it in your sleep. Think of this new theory you’ve learned like that, just another thing on your guitar for you to master

Damn! One string! I am so glad I found this channel. This teacher simplifies it so i understand what he hell is going on. I am a complete novice, And RUclips only leaves me confused half the time. So glad for StichMethod

I love the way you begin the lesson…you said:
“I want to teach you about the space between the stuff we know…”
    Awesome….
The 8 rules you present here will really help me…..
    Thank you (:

Hey Ian, Greetings from Ireland ! Many thanks for such a great video. I have been stuck in theory land for months - and now with just 3 notes - I have found my way out. Thanks you !

Exactly. I can be lazy and just use my fingers. But being mindful takes wanting it and focus. And when I feel like I'm focusing and understanding, it feels amazing. 👍👍

Amazing what three notes can generate beautiful melodies when we know how to play them. Thank you Ian.

You are such a good teacher, man… wow.
I remember a past video of yours that I had seen where I remembered you saying something about using two notes and bending to a third note and using only those would make you better.
    Well guess what?
I have always revisited that from time to time when I think of it, and it’s still just as useful. every time I do it I learn something else. Your ‘3 notes’ thing has changed me as a player more than any single thing I’ve learned over the last 3-4 year adventure that I embarked on when I started learning guitar at 35. Well when I first heard you say that I was at a point of “memorizing” positions. This trick got me to feel. It helped me find that magic place O love to go to now when I play when I am able to close my eyes and pour my heart out thru the fretboard. Now I’m able to literally mentally go someplace during a backing track. I feel myself floating below the guitar sound somewhere and time and space start to lose all cohesion.
That is the absolute best gift that anyone’s ever given me, and I will always send positive vibes your way for helping me to unlock the greatest self-therapy I’ll ever know. Thank you for all you do

That's actually awesome. I have not been playing long but got straight into and it felt amazing just using those three notes and just letting go. I have decided to be a patron.

This is such a beautiful video. Literally my exact situation of knowing scales pretty well, sounding pretty good but just missing what all the "greats" seem to have. Thank you so much and you're an amazing instructor.

I taught myself so improvising is what I started on. I can’t play other people’s music note for note (or even understand why people want to do that) but I can play my guitar (bass, violin, piano, drums, etc... over anything.
