ABOUT THE GOOD PLACE
From Michael Schur, executive producer of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Parks and Recreation," comes a smart, unique new comedy that follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, "House of Lies," "Veronica Mars"), an ordinary woman who, through an extraordinary string of events, enters the afterlife where she comes to realize that she hasn't been a very good person. With the help of her wise afterlife mentor (Ted Danson, "Bored to Death," "Cheers"), she's determined to shed her old way of living and discover the awesome (or at least the pretty good) person within.

"If I stop moving, I start thinking. If I start thinking, I start thinking about things I don't want to think about-like death.......oops".
That's genius writing right there.
That's why Michael should have had Doctor Strange's teacher teach him how to loop time endlessly so he can come back every time he dies. January 10, 2019, 11:06am
Too familiar as well, not the death part 😆 still a great line that fits like a glove.
Actually I had similar thing like at least several times I was acting like ADHD rat on coctail from cocaine energetic drinks for days, simply because stopping would cause me thinking about things I didn't want to think.
That's me when ever i watch Unus annus I'm just giggling at Mark and Ethan then I remember how it's ending soon

I love how she just starts crying INTO A TOILET PLUNGER. That's so random and genius at the same time.

Yessss!!!!!!
the thing about eleanor is how self-aware she is of herself and of her flaws/trauma. she's aware that it has an effect on her, and (mostly) lets it run her actions. she never has an "epiphany". and that makes for such a wise person when she does choose to change, or is given an incentive/support. she's in touch with how these things feel, and is blunt/tough enough to keep it real and give genuinely relatable advice, but not without a sense of comfort.
This was very well said. I freaking adore Eleanor because I can relate to her is so many ways - good and bad.
This clip includes the moment that truly captures Kristen Bell's brilliance as an actress - the moment when she manages to be simultaneously hilarious, and utterly heartbreaking
That scenes just breaks me. I start laughing at the joke, but the moment I stop I realize I teared up over how sad the whole situation is.
I didn't appreciate her acting until I saw that.
I was sold on her acting before but the line "I'm not joking, I'm a legit snack" in the s3 finale is what broke me
@@kroumkroum2063 Really? That's the line that got you???

Is fun how this old Kristen Bell interview is connected to that clip
"I start thinking about things I don't wanna think about like death....oops" Literally my entire life.
Get busy living or get busy dying! And don't waste your 102nd birthday trying to commit suicide, like Marvin Marsh did in South Park. October 18, 2020, 5:00am
The genius of this show is that I'm somehow simultaneously genuinely moved by Eleanor's breakdown, and cracked up by it. I can't think of another show that managed to not only do that, but do it on a regular basis.
Have you seen bojack? It might be up your alley
Oh how I WORSHIP the variations of Janet!!!
My favorite is Disco Janet, Janet to the Disco Place, the one and only true Good Place.
this show deserves more

Eh, Michael Schur's created three shows (this, Parks & Rec, and Brooklyn 99) that do average ratings on network TV but bring in huge numbers via streaming on Hulu and Netflix, plus get tons of critical acclaim. I'd say he and his team are making out like bandits making shows like this.

"Go ahead and cry all you want. But you're gonna have to pay for that toilet plunger."
My senior quote
That's a very good point. I've freaked out about death but it's like, you either let that fear rule you or live your life. You don't stop carrying that burden of knowledge but you can move forward.
I'm sorry I lost it at "toothbrush feelings" 😂. And then the family pack of tissues 🤣
Oddly enough this was one of the saddest scenes for me.
For sure, she never had the caring family she wanted and the toothbrush scene showed how it affected her even til adulthood. And I thought her childhood scenes were sad already.
The way Janet laughed at 0:14
A FAMILY PACK?!
*crying intensifies* 😟😢😭😭😭
I laughed so hard 😭
D’Arcy Carden is always so wonderfully funny.
“A FAMILY PACK” 😂😂😂😂😂🤣😅😅😁
This scene spoke to me man. I once had realization of how death would be like. And i've been scared ever since of that realization. It eats me, but i deal with it by addressing it.
Poor Eleanor. I honestly would cry about the family toothbrush thing too. 😞😞 Though I am an 18 (1/2) year old man.
Yeah I'm not very close with my family either :(
Such an underrated to show
Not really..
Her expression change at 1:51 is sending me
Toothbrush feelings:'(
This show is so incredibly brilliant. The performances, the stories, the twists and surprises, the heartbreak and the laughs. It's my favorite series ever and I wish it had lasted longer.
As someone doing the existential crisis and death freaking out over the past months, this is helpful
Same
The toothbrush scene is hilarious but heartbreaking, I adore Eleanor (Kristen Bell)💖💖
"A FAMILY pack???!!!!" XD
I love how good of a friend Janet is to Michael
This is my favourite episode, learning what its like to be humans and that we are all aware of death and a little sad all the time. That toothbrush scene was sad and hilarious simultaneously 😂
As someone who deals with Existential Thanatophobia - this episode speaks volumes to me.
Can’t begin to count how many times I’ve gone through the „gotta keep busy or I’ll think of it“ cycle.
That forking shirt loves to start up while I’m dead asleep (yes pun intended).
"A FAMILY pack?!!!!" XD!!!!!!
One of the BEST series in the last 20 years.
BEST SHOW EVER
Katie Wagner I need to binge watch season 1 again
As someone who's going through an existential crisis, this scene is really helping me get through it. I love this show!
There’s a reason both Kristen and ted deserve Oscars and were picked for those roles
Oscars are for film not television
they put films on television.. wait thats dumb-
Using the events of this scene for an essay; Thank-you :)
Once again, THAT is bad Janet.
Why do I think that Michael is the archangel Michael. Seriously someone give me theories
Nah Michael is Michael Schur, the show's creator, whose trying to create a different way of torturing people/writing a sitcom. Michael in Dance Dance Resolution is a writer going through a creative process
My dad had a theory that Michael is a human in the bad place who's been given fake memories to make him think he's a demon because his punishment is eternal failure, but that theory could work as well. Huge plan though.
Here's a link for ya
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-level_utilitarianism
agenttheater5 it makes sense. But with that logic, Shawn probably is being tortured in the bad place for plain out being nasty to everyone as a CEO in his past so his “nastiness” punishment is to do it and have karma bite him back constantly no matter how much he tries to stop Michael. He’s constantly stressed out with not having full control so Michael is that. Maybe the judge is the one doing all this and it’s a full test for everyone to see what happens.
Or maybe all this time, all of them are literally in a purgatory and the entire series is a full test to see if they got be redeemed and the bad place is real but for only super disgusting humans. And basically the screams of hell are fake and just to “motivate them”.
Haha just throwing it out there.
Or a worse theory. From end of season 3? What if Eleanor gets a feel of the torturing and she gets offered to become a demon as a last resort to stop her from being successful? Because if she’s successful? The point system will nullify the unintended consequences and take into consideration everyday human life and the bad place will have way less people and people whom truly deserve it. Not everyday joes who forgot to buy from Whole Foods.
my dad said that
I needed this today
"You're learning what it's like to be human." But Eleanor, humans aren't the only mortals.
Humans are probably the only mortals who stress and fret about it constantly and consistently.
Well, humans are I suppose, on balance more capable of understanding the gravity of death and what it means - the fear of death goes deeper than the instinctive fear that is fundamental behaviour for all living beings. On an emotional level, as well as the rational one, humans realize the fear of death not only for themselves but those around them. Increased consciousness means we also have an increased wariness towards death just like we would have react more strongly on beholding something beautiful or comforting.
God, I love this show.
A FaMiLy PaCk???? I laugh every time

Why can't I remember this episode!!!???
Yo I feel like Micheal right here. Alllll the time.

Always makes me laugh.
Sometimes i just feel like crying into a plunger.

Life is torture existence is a prison
I Agree
Just one thing I just don't understand between 1:15-1:50 how does Eleanor's anxiety about "family" correlates with the existential crisis that Michael is going through ?
In the same episode there are also flashbacks of Eleanor attending her father's funeral. She doesn't have much of an emotional reaction to it at the time. However, when she goes to the store for a toothbrush holder afterwards, she is forced to confront those emotions. Her dad - as well as her mom - was not good at being a parent, and now he's gone, there is no chance for her to make peace with him. Anything she might have wanted to say to him about the way he raised her, any grievances she might've wanted to air or bond she wanted to mend, all of that is gone. Her family hangups are very much on full display, but ultimately it's the fact that he is permanently gone that she's really crying about. Hope this helps!

this part of history made me interested in Heidegger and the consciousness of finity and negation of death.
Where can I buy a toothbrush holder like that?
toothbrush :(
This is the only episode of The Good Place that I don't like. Not only because I respectfully disagree with Chidi's immortal = immoral philosophy, but because I felt very bad for Michael during his existential crisis where he thought really sad thoughts like "We're all just corpses who haven't begun to decay." and "Birth is a curse, and existence is a prison." 😭 No one wants to, or should be a miserable sad person with nothing for which to live except for waiting to die. I get why this plot was necessary for Michael's character arc, but it is tough for me to watch again because - this episode...it haunts you. January 9, 2021, 9:46pm
Actually toothbrushes holder is quite cool thing. We are using mug, but I'm litterally only one in family who puts his toothbrush to not touch others. Damn, I know we are amily, but we don't tongue kiss each other, so why should we allow out toothbrushes to touch their heads?
Exactly. I want to know where to buy a toothbrush holder like that one.
That is a demon. Michael is a legit demon.
Michael is pretty similar to Q of Star Trek.
I feel bad for Elenor. Behind her selfish attitude is someone who is hurt because of bad parents
She’s had to look out for herself her whole life. Even as a kid. She’s never knew what it’s like to be a part of a bigger picture. It’s sad. But understandable. But, she literally becomes a great person and saves the universe. So, all’s well that ends well.
why do her tears devalue the plunger?
/i wonder same thing. It's damn plunger you use on thing you make poo too. It's not sth which has to be sterile.
😂 good question
i'm curious if a non-human being would even have this reaction because as a non-human we can't guarantee that michael has a self-preservation instinct, and if someone doesn't have one of those i don't think we can guarantee that their own death will upset them
Actually every animal has self-preservation instinct, so I don't know, why you keep using "non-human being" thing. dog is non-human being too.
if you've seen the episode, you'll know that he DOES have a self-preservation instinct. and i mean, arguably, one of the reasons he kept resetting everything in the first place was also due to self preservation (threat of retirement).
Jokes on you, I get happy when I think about death. The pain is finally going to end
Same here. Hope everything goes well for you
I'm not sure, but i think the toothbrushes are a metaphor for something.
Which one of these confusing french books will make him normal

Aqua Teen Hunger Force begs to differ on what Chidi said to there being no consequences for those who live forever. Because if you get a life sentence in prison...it never ends. Not even in a few trillion years. January 4, 2019, 7:17pm
Adam Kalb yeah there is that but the fact that you know you will just outlast the world around you makes such time meaningless. Eventually society will crumble, but you won’t so it has no effect on you anyways since you have lived for eons, what is a millennium compared to the many memories of your existence?
@@nathanieljefferies5491 Hmmm...I guess that depends if there are...other authorities who are around as forever as you, or if you have any friends that live as forever as you. I never have, and still do not believe that "eternal existence" automatically means "no morals or empathy" (immortal does not = immoral) because I...might miss the world around me if that was the case for me, and they might not mean much if I outlast such moral or emotional attachments, but morals and empathy to me, will still be worth something in a million years and I am all about living in the moment. Besides, a millennium is long enough for a society to crumble, and eventually be rebuilt anew by a new generation starting a new society, like in the first episode of Futurama. If I discovered some scientific secret that could help me and my mother last forever, it would be totally worth it because I would love to always be around to make the world a better place, no matter how much it gets worn away with time as long as it's not near-instantly negated. How long is an eon really?
I'm not sorry for being cautiously optimistic about the possibility of having the gift/discovering the key to living forever, but like all gifts and games in this world, it would not feel worthwhile without someone with whom you can share it. What else can I say? I'm a guy who always likes to see what happens next. This discussion is over. January 10, 2019, 10:21am
Even if I did live for a millennium (and this may be easy for me to say because I am just as old as Google), that would be another reason to treasure every good moment you have in your life before you eventually do outlast society and a new one comes up, and not let what will happen get in the way of what is happening now. February 7, 2019, 10:53pm
@@nathanieljefferies5491 (gasp) Maybe it's not living forever that gave Michael no consequences for his actions. Maybe it's the fact that he was evil since the beginning of time and it's his job to torture people in The Bad Place, so there is no punishment for torture by design! February 9, 2019, 12:33pm
Well, you know, except for "retirement."
